Nishiki Market
Nishiki Market is a must-visit market in Kyoto. Visitors can buy all sorts of different Japanese food and snacks. We first went late in the evening and were disappointed that most shops were already closed by 7pm, so we went back on our last day in Kyoto around noon, and the street was packed with people. We tried some tempura, pickled cucumbers, and bought some Japanese honey and herbal teas. The red, green, yellow roof indicates food street, and the white roof indicates shopping streets.

Colourful street market with many shops
Nishiki market is a very bustling street with many shops and restaurants.
You can find all kinds of shops here, from shop selling knife to shop selling kimono, souvenirs and chopsticks.
The street is also lined with many restaurants so you won’t go hungry here. Coming here in the early morning or late afternoon as it can get very crowded after 11am and it is hard to walk in the narrow street.

Kyoto's Culinary Market
Kyoto's Nishiki Market is a culinary paradise! From the moment I stepped in, I was captivated by the incredible variety of food offerings. The bustling stalls presented a delightful assortment of local delicacies and flavors that left me in awe.
One of the highlights was undoubtedly the fresh seafood. The stalls lined with vibrant seafood, from succulent sashimi to perfectly grilled skewers, showcased the region's maritime bounty. The taste was simply unparalleled – a testament to the market's commitment to quality.
But Nishiki Market isn't just about seafood. The market's vibrant energy was palpable as I explored the narrow alleyways, discovering unique street foods that tempted my taste buds. I couldn't resist trying the mouthwatering takoyaki, its crispy exterior giving way to a tender and flavorful center. And the aroma of freshly fried tempura was irresistible – a true feast for the senses.
One cannot overlook the variety of pickled vegetables and local Kyoto snacks that adorned the stalls. The umami-packed tsukemono (pickles) added a delightful tang to the experience, and the assortment of mochi-based treats provided a sweet contrast to the savory delights. There was even a Snoopy' souvenir store with many cute snoppy snacks and items!!!!!
While Nishiki Market is undoubtedly a food lover's paradise, it's also a cultural immersion. The interactions with the friendly vendors, who passionately shared stories about their offerings, added a personal touch that made the experience even more memorable.
In conclusion, Nishiki Market is a gastronomic journey that shouldn't be missed. The market's kaleidoscope of flavors, the warmth of the people, and the authentic cultural experience all come together to create an unforgettable adventure for food enthusiasts and travelers alike. Definitely check it out when you're in Kyoto! #kyoto #nishikimarket #food #sushi #sashimi
Nishiki Market
Nishiki Market is probably the best plan for adventurous travellers visiting Kyoto. It is Kyoto’s largest traditional food market and the location is quite convenient as it is in the hearth of the city's down town.
The recommended sightseeing time is between one to two hours.
I highly recommend a stroll in this market. The market is huge and offers infinite options. Make sure you are not in a hurry and bring an empty stomach to enjoy all the street-food. It is open to the public until 5:00 PM but some food stalls close later.

Well, this is a touristy market for sure but it is worth visiting for the vibe and the food. Some of the foods are truly legit. My all-time favorite is the tofu shop where they made tofu donut and tofu soft serve. Such a light yet pleasant sensation from both sweets. The food stalls selling seafood look amazing too. Very cool spot for traditional Japanese food shopping.

Nishiki Market
#2024wish Cool place to stroll around and taste some great food. There are overrated places but some hidden gems. I found a truck where there wasn't a queue, and that was suspicious, I thought at first it wasn't that good, but I got the best wagyu skewer! Prices can be high somewhere since it's a popular tourist attraction, but you can leave with a full stomach if you take a couple of things, spending a fair amount of money.
I wish to go back here in 2024

Amazing food, fantastic shops if your looking to buy cubs, plates, mugs, household items, ornament to remember your trip, and Japanese kitchen knives, which look amazing! Very busy! I went at 3pm, which was not ideal.
This place surprise me in all the aspects, is a nice place to taste street Japanese food and sake. There are a lot of stores with many souvenirs and you can buy a kimono at 1 yen/g.

Nishiki Market is one of the oldest market in Kyoto, with over 100 stalls selling one of Japan’s best local food and freshest seafood picks! It’s also a great shopping area to purchase souvenirs, gifts and clothings.
We went into the market at noon, packed with locals & tourists exploring the historical spot, it’s very crowded and local vendors are giving loud and warm welcomes to the shoppers.
We wander around and stumbled on a few Japanese dishes like Takoyaki, crabmeat and gyoza in a local store, it’s really good and the price is affordable.
We spotted a croquette shop that is selling hot piping croquettes, the place is filled with locals and we know we got to try it. We got the soymilk and cream flavour which is very creamy and juicy, it’s so delicious!

THIS IS FOOD HEAVEN! And I mean that! Nishiki Market in Kyoto is definitely the best food market I have been into by far. They sell a lot of good foods like crabs, squid, and all the other seafoods. They also sell sweets, rice cakes, Takoyaki, mochi, and a lot more. This is heaven for all Foodie out there. A must-go place if you love food so much.

On the first day of the Kansai tour, I came to Kyoto's canteen-jin market for a walk early in the morning. I really like this kind of market in Japan, and this is what I have to go every time I go to a place. For example, the Black Gate Market in Osaka, the Tsukiji Market in Tokyo, and the Makishi Market in Okinawa. In the last group of middle-aged and elderly people, one was tall and handsome, and immediately thought of "Five Nights and Nine".
