Baan Dam Museum Review

I went to the White Temple in Chiang Rai in the morning. In the afternoon, this is the Black Temple. In fact, it is more like a small complex with many sculptures and other artworks. The theme of these works covers dark elements such as death, hell and so on, and the tone of the works is mainly black, so it is called the Black Temple.

It took 36 years to design and build by the Thai ghost artist Thawan Duchanee, but it is not a temple, but a museum. The museum has collected a large number of exhibits on death, integrating ancient animal bones, primitive hunting tools, etc. into various artworks. The giant seats of buffalo horns, the devil reliefs on wooden boats, the wind bell device made of animal skins hanging in the middle of the air, etc., give people associations about hell. Around the black temple are a dozen buildings decorated with bull horns, all of the buildings, exhibits, etc. are black as the tone, and are very different from the white temple, showing the difference between heaven and hell.

as name suggested a black house. the display is rather weird with many bones and skins. the most interesting sign is for the toilet.

nice museum but a bit dark on the art. sometimes feel like overload.
