Heathrow Express planned strikes 2026: Is my train running this week?

When Heathrow Express strike action is underway, their service can experience significant reductions that heavily impact airport passengers. Typically, Heathrow Express strike action results in suspended direct airport links for a few hours to a full day, less frequent connections, and short-notice timetable changes.

Heathrow Express provides non-stop trains from Paddington to Heathrow, so passengers travelling from London Paddington to Heathrow Airport during Heathrow Express strikes may experience significant delays in the usual ‘fast’ airport transfer from Heathrow Airport, or no service at all if outside the reduced operating hours. Passengers making business or international travel connections may be significantly impacted, as congested platforms and the possibility of full trains drastically increase potential transfer time.

In this guide, we will highlight all planned and potential strike action affecting Heathrow Express services in 2026, and offer advice on how you can best navigate any disruptions to your planned travel.

Is Heathrow Express on strike today or next week?

No, Heathrow Express is not on strike today or next week. That being said, situations can change at short notice, so we recommend checking back regularly to keep informed of the latest developments.

You can find the most up-to-date information at the following sources:

Heathrow Express’ Industrial Action page publishes any disruptions to service caused by strike action.
National Rail’s Industrial Action page is regularly updated with the latest information regarding service updates during strikes.

Industrial disputes can escalate rapidly, so make sure to regularly consult any service updates in the run-up to planned travel with Heathrow Express. Strike announcements can be released with as little as a week to two weeks in advance of strike dates, so it’s worth staying in the loop.

Heathrow Express strike dates and latest updates

There are currently no Heathrow Express strike dates planned for 2026. If this situation changes, this page will be updated with the latest information as soon as possible.

We advise checking back here in the lead up to your travel dates, as well as checking the Heathrow Express Service Update Page and National Rail.

How Heathrow Express strikes affect your journey?

Heathrow Express strikes have a significant impact on airport passengers, adding extra stress to what can already be a time-sensitive journey as you try to arrive in time for your flight. The Heathrow Express is the fastest airport connection, and strikes usually result in a reduced service, with the potential for delays as well as increased pressure on alternative services.

The Heathrow Express typically runs every 15 minutes, but during a strike, there are usually just 2 trains an hour, and operating hours are drastically shortened from their usual 05:00 to midnight schedule to 07:30 to 18:30. If your flight arrives or departs outside this window, you effectively lose access to the fastest airport connection during Heathrow Express strikes.

This reduced service adds an extra layer of stress when planning international travel. Strike-date timetables tend to increase demand across all services to Heathrow Airport – meaning delays are a distinct possibility.

If your train is too full to board, you’ll have to wait an extra 30 minutes for the next connection – and delays like this could result in missing expensive long-haul flights as well as any knock-on costs. Delays may be exacerbated in severe strikes, where the Heathrow Express may suspend calls at Terminal 5, forcing passengers to use the airport’s internal transfers.

Tips for navigating Heathrow Express strikes

If your journey is impacted by Heathrow Express strikes, we’ve got some advice to minimise the disruption to your travel plans.

Allow extra time: If you’re heading to Heathrow for a flight connection, plan to leave Central London at least 90 minutes earlier than you had originally planned. Fewer trains mean they fill up faster, so you’re not guaranteed to board the train you arrive for, and you’ll have to wait twice as long for the next train.
Plan backup routes: Have your backup route ready in advance – whether it’s another rail service or a coach, strike announcements cause demand for alternative options to shoot up.
Check flight connection times carefully: Most insurance companies will only cover a missed departure if you allow a ‘reasonable’ amount of time for the journey – usually 2 hours. If you don’t plan for enough extra time during a strike, insurance companies may reject your claim. You should also check when your airline’s baggage check-in counter closes – usually 60–90 minutes before departure, so even if you’re on time to make your flight, you need to consider the bag drop if you’re checking in a suitcase.

Alternative travel options during Heathrow Express strikes

It’s worth considering the alternative transport options available to you during Heathrow Express strikes, especially if you are planning to travel outside strike-impacted operating hours.

Elizabeth Line

The Elizabeth Line runs on the same tracks as the Heathrow Express and is the main alternative during Heathrow Express strikes. It runs from London Paddington to Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. While the Heathrow Express takes about 15 minutes to reach the airport, the Elizabeth Line takes about 30–35 minutes as it makes stops at stations such as Ealing Broadway and Hayes & Harlington.

London Underground – Piccadilly Line

The Piccadilly Line runs from Central London stations like Leicester Square and South Kensington to Heathrow Airport, taking about 50–60 minutes to complete the journey. It is a good option if you are departing from or arriving at South/West London or if you need to avoid Paddington entirely.

Taxis and private transfers

Black Cabs are available from the Paddington taxi rank, and usually cost between £60 and £100 and take 40–70 minutes, depending on traffic. Expect longer wait times at Paddington. If using ride-hailing services, you can also expect surge pricing. If you plan in advance, a private transfer offers high reliability and fixed quotes at the time of booking. Many often include a 30–60 minute wait time, which is helpful during crowded strike days.

Popular FAQs for Heathrow Express strikes

How far in advance are Heathrow Express strikes announced?

Heathrow Express strikes are typically announced one to two weeks in advance, although strike-date timetables are usually published just 5 days in advance. Monitor Heathrow Express service updates during industrial negotiations to stay up to date with the latest information.

What is the fastest alternative to the Heathrow Express?

The Elizabeth Line is the fastest alternative to the Heathrow Express. It departs from the same station – Paddington – and runs on the same tracks, calling at additional stops along the way. While the Heathrow Express takes just 15 minutes, the Elizabeth Line takes about 35 minutes. Taxis are also another viable option if the Elizabeth Line is too congested – normally take about 45–70 minutes, depending on traffic.

Can I get a refund if my train is cancelled?

Yes, if your Heathrow Express train is cancelled or rescheduled due to strike action, you are entitled to a full fee-free refund. You can claim your refund through the channel you purchased your ticket from, whether that’s directly from Heathrow Express, here on Trip.com or on another booking platform. Some strikes also implement ‘Mutual Ticket Acceptance’, whereby your original ticket may be valid on services like the Elizabeth Line.

Will airport connections be affected significantly?

Yes, Heathrow Express strikes impact airport connections most significantly. As all rail passengers are funnelled onto the Elizabeth Line, the Heathrow Terminal 2 & 3 station becomes a major bottleneck; in addition, transfers from Terminals 2 & 3 to Terminal 5 are often restricted to the Elizabeth Line or Piccadilly Line (internal transfers are airside only), making it much harder to squeeze on for one stop. For self-connecting flights, increase the standard 3-hour connection time to 4 hours.
