LNER engineering works (Updated November 2026)
If you're planning a trip on the East Coast Main Line over the coming month this post details all the LNER engineering works scheduled for these dates.
LNER's engineering works usually take place over weekends, bank holidays and quieter travel periods to keep disruption to a minimum. While they may seem a nuisance, these scheduled maintenance periods are all about keeping the rails in top condition, so LNER can keep running a reliable service for years to come.

Luckily, there are always railway replacement buses or alternative services running to take you where you need to go. This guide covers all the upcoming LNER engineering works for 2026, along with tips on what to do if your route is affected and how to plan ahead.

(All information taken from LNER's engineering works page, which can be found here).

What to do if your LNER route is affected by engineering works?

If your journey falls on one of the dates listed above, there's no need to worry-when LNER engineering works take place, there's usually always an alternative service to take you where you need to go. Here's what to do if your route is affected by LNER disruption:

Rail replacement buses are perhaps the most common alternative. These run between the stations where trains aren't operating and are free to use with your existing LNER ticket. They do take a bit longer than the train; a bus between York and Darlington, for example, adds roughly an hour to your trip, so make sure you factor that into your plans.
In some cases, LNER will run a truncated service instead. This means trains still operate on part of the route, just not the full line. A good example is when services run between London King's Cross and York as normal, with replacement buses covering the closed section north to Darlington. You'd change at York, hop on the rail replacement bus, then pick up another LNER train from Darlington if you're heading further north to Newcastle or Edinburgh.
Occasionally, services get diverted via alternative lines, which can add 20 to 40 minutes depending on the detour. LNER will confirm exact timings once amended timetables are published-this is usually 2 to 4 weeks before the works. You'll then be able to see these on Trip.com.

Here are a few tips to keep your journey on track:

  • Build in extra time, especially if you have onward connections in Edinburgh or Newcastle. A 15-minute buffer can save a lot of stress if the replacement bus runs behind.
  • Travel earlier in the day where you can. Morning services tend to be less affected and replacement buses are generally quieter before lunchtime.
  • Book your tickets after the amended timetable goes live. This way, you'll see the adjusted departure times and won't end up on a service that's been cancelled.
  • If you're heading up for the weekend and the engineering works affect late evening services, it might be worth booking an overnight stay in York or Edinburgh rather than risking a long journey home. Browse hotels in York or Edinburgh to find somewhere to stay.

Stations most affected by LNER engineering works

Some sections of the East Coast Main Line are more prone to engineering works than others, so it's handy to know which parts of the route are most frequently affected.
London King's Cross is where all LNER services begin and end, so any work near the station has a knock-on effect across the whole network. Weekend closures here can mean all LNER services start and terminate at a different London station, or that trains are diverted via Moorgate or the Thameslink corridor.
The Welwyn Viaduct in Hertfordshire is another hotspot for engineering works. This stretch of railway sees all East Coast Main Line services funnelled through a narrow 2-track section, meaning LNER can only run a reduced timetable when work takes place here. If you're travelling between London and Peterborough or Stevenage, you may notice fewer trains on weekends.
Further north, the York and Doncaster junction areas are among the busiest points on the route. These stations are where multiple lines meet, and maintenance at either one can affect trains heading to Leeds, Hull, Harrogate and Scotland.
The Newcastle approaches and the Scottish border sections heading into Edinburgh Waverley can also see periodic closures. Cross-border track upgrades often mean replacement buses between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh, or services starting and finishing at Newcastle rather than going further north.

Frequently asked questions about LNER engineering works

Are LNER tickets valid on rail replacement buses?

Yes, your existing ticket is valid on any replacement bus service that's running during LNER engineering works. Just show your LNER ticket (paper or e-ticket) to the bus driver when you board.

How far in advance are East Coast Main Line works announced?

LNER and Network Rail typically confirm engineering works 12 weeks ahead, with full amended timetables published 2 to 4 weeks before travel. These schedules are automatically updated on Trip.com, so you can plan ahead when using the journey planner.

Are King's Cross closures common during bank holidays?

No, you're unlikely to see London King's Cross fully closed during bank holidays, but there may be a reduced service in and out of the station over long weekends. LNER will always confirm alternative arrangements well in advance, so there shouldn't be any surprises.

Can I get a refund if I decide not to travel?

Yes, if there are LNER cancellations or disruptions, you can usually claim a full refund for your unused ticket under National Rail's Delay Repay scheme. Advance tickets are usually not refundable, so you can apply for a refund if you booked your Advance ticket before the engineering works were scheduled.

Do engineering works usually affect Sunday services?

Yes, Sundays are when planned engineering works usually take place, as this is when passenger numbers tend to be at their lowest. If you're a regular Sunday traveller on the East Coast Main Line, it's always worth checking for LNER disruption before you plan your trip.
