Greater Anglia engineering works (November 2026)

If you're planning a day out in London or in East Anglia by train, it's worth checking for Greater Anglia engineering works before you travel. And that's where this article comes in. We've compiled all the planned Greater Anglia train disruptions for the next few long weekends and broken them down day by day, so you know exactly what's running and what's not.
While engineering works may seem like a pain, it's how Network Rail keeps the tracks, signals and stations in good shape for the long run. To minimise disruption, scheduled maintenance and upgrades usually take place over weekends and bank holidays when fewer people use the line.
The good news is that rail replacement buses, amended timetables, and alternative routes are nearly always in place to keep you moving, so a day trip to Cambridge, Norwich or the Suffolk coast is still very much on the cards. This guide covers all you need to know about planning a trip during Greater Anglia engineering works.
What's the best way to use this guide?
We'd recommend hitting CTRL+F on this page and typing in any relevant station or routes for your planned travel to check if there are any planned disruptions upcoming.

What to do if your Greater Anglia route is affected by engineering works
If your route is affected by Greater Anglia's planned works, there will always be an alternative way to get from A to B. You'll just need to factor in a bit of extra time for your journey. Here's what to expect:
- Rail replacement buses. These normally run between affected stations, and your train ticket is valid on these at no extra cost.
- Shortened services. Some routes may be truncated, so a train that normally runs fromLondon Liverpool Street might start atStratford instead.
- Reduced schedules. Trains may also run less frequently than usual, and journey times will often be longer.
- Different start and finish times. You may see that trains start later and finish earlier, to allow for late-night engineering works.
Catching a flight fromStansted Airport? Then be sure to leave yourself plenty of extra time. The same goes for cruise connections at Harwich—tight connections via central London are worth avoiding when engineering works are taking place, as delays on one leg can have a knock-on effect to the rest of your journey.
For a weekend day out in East Anglia, you might want to consider choosing a different weekend when there are no planned works disrupting the railways. If you can't change your dates, though, consider booking a hotel and making a weekend of it. You'll find a huge selection of hotels on Trip.com for stays in Cambridge, Great Yarmouth and other major cities along the line.
Stations most affected by Greater Anglia engineering works
If you travel to, from or via any of these places on the Greater Anglia network over long weekends, it's always worth checking ahead. Here are the most disruption-prone areas:
London Liverpool Street is the main terminus for Greater Anglia services, so any closure here can have a big knock-on effect across the whole network. Luckily, this isn't too common and usually takes place on long weekends when far fewer people are commuting. When Liverpool Street is closed, trains will often start and finish atStratford instead, where you can catch alternative services like rail replacement buses or the Overground.
TheStratford andShenfield corridor is another regular spot for weekend works. If you're travelling fromSouthend Victoria,Chelmsford or anywhere along this line, check your journey the day before.
There are works aroundColchester from time to time, too. As a busy junction on the main line to Norwich and the branch to Clacton-on-Sea, disruption here can have a domino effect across Essex and Suffolk.
Other hot spots for maintenance works include Ipswich andCambridge, so if you've got weekend plans in either of these cities—or to towns along the way likeBury St Edmunds—you'll want to double-check when planning your journey.
Flying out of Stansted Airport? Services here can be affected by works on the main line between Liverpool Street and the airport, so it's a good idea to confirm your train is running before you head out—especially if you have an early flight.
Frequently asked questions about Greater Anglia engineering works
Are Greater Anglia tickets valid on rail replacement buses?
Yes, your existing train ticket is valid on any rail replacement bus that's running in place of your booked service, at no extra cost. Just show your ticket to the driver when you board.
Can I get a refund if I choose not to travel?
Yes. If engineering works affect your journey and you decide not to travel, you can claim a full refund on your unused ticket. Advance tickets can often be refunded or exchanged free of charge when there's significant disruption, too. Just be sure to check the terms and conditions of your ticket before you book.
How far in advance are engineering works announced?
Most of Greater Anglia's planned engineering works are confirmed around 12 weeks ahead, so you'll usually see the replacement timetables when booking your tickets.
Are Liverpool Street closures common during bank holidays?
London Liverpool Street does close from time to time over bank holiday weekends when Network Rails carries out larger upgrade projects. When this happens, trains are usually diverted toStratford and you can catch alternative services into London from there at no extra cost.
Does engineering work affect Stansted Express services?
Yes, it can do as the Stansted Express uses the same main line between Liverpool Street and the airport. When work takes place on this stretch, services may be replaced by buses or run on an amended timetable. If you're flying from Stansted, it's always a good idea to check the timetable a day or two before you travel and allow extra time just in case.
