c2c engineering works (November 2026)
If you're planning a day out on c2c trains over November, it's worth checking this page first. Here we've detailed all the c2c engineering works planned for the long weekends over Easter and during May, so you can plan your trip with minimal disruption.
These c2c engineering works are scheduled infrastructure upgrades, not strike action, and take place regularly (usually more so on weekends and bank holidays) when fewer people tend to use the trains. These works help maintain tracks, signals, and stations across the Essex corridor, so you can continue to commute in and out of London and take day trips to the Essex seaside for years to come.

You'll be pleased to know, too, that c2c runs a range of alternative services to cover disrupted trains, so you won't need to completely cancel your plans. This guide breaks down what's happening, when, and how to plan around it.

What's the best way to use this guide?

We'd recommend hitting CTRL+F on this page and typing in any relevant station or routes for your planned travel to check if there are any planned disruptions upcoming.

What to do if your c2c route is affected by engineering works

The good news is that c2c engineering works are always planned and published well in advance, so you can check before you travel and adjust your plans if needed. Here's what you might come across on days when work is taking place.

  • Rail replacement buses run between stations where the line is closed. Where possible, they usually follow the same route as the train and stop at all the stations in between, so you can still get from A to B. Journey times are longer by bus, though, so give yourself a bit of extra time.
  • Diverted services are common whenLondon Fenchurch Street is closed. When this happens, c2c trains usually run to and from Liverpool Street via Stratford instead. Liverpool Street is a short walk from Fenchurch Street, so you'll end up in the same part of London.
  • Amended timetables may mean fewer trains or slightly different departure times. First and last trains are often the most affected too, so if you're catching an early morning or late evening service, double-check before you head out.

Here are a few tips to help you plan around engineering works on c2c's London, Southend and Tilbury lines:

  • Give yourself extra time if you're heading toSouthend or Shoeburyness for a day at the seaside. Be sure to double-check the times of the last trains back to London, too.
  • If you're catching a ferry or cruise from Tilbury, don't leave it too tight. Check the amended timetable and aim to arrive with plenty of time to spare.
  • Morning engineering works are often finished by lunchtime, so travelling in the afternoon can sometimes mean a smoother ride with normal services back in place.

  • Book your tickets once the amended timetable has been confirmed. That way, you'll know exactly which trains are running and when.

  • If you're heading to Southend for a weekend and don't want to worry about late-night replacement buses, an overnight stay can be a great shout. Be sure to check out Trip.com's hotels in Southend-on-Sea.

Stations most affected by c2c engineering works

You'll often find that c2c engineering works are concentrated around a few key parts of the network, so it helps to know which areas are most likely to see changes.

London Fenchurch Street is the main London terminus for c2c, and closures here have the biggest ripple effect across the network. When work takes place between Fenchurch Street andBarking, all trains are usually diverted to Liverpool Street via Stratford. Luckily, Liverpool Street isn't too far away.
The Barking corridor is a busy stretch where c2c trains share the tracks with other operators and the Underground. Work here can affect onward connections to the District and Hammersmith & City lines, plus other National Rail services. If Barking is on your route, keep an eye on the dates above and plan an alternative journey via Stratford or West Ham if needed.
The Basildon and Pitsea route occasionally sees late-evening closures between Stanford-le-Hope and Pitsea. Rail replacement buses usually cover the gap between these stations, and the disruption usually only affects the last few services of the day.
The Tilbury branch is worth watching if you're heading to Tilbury Town for the cruise terminal or ferry port. Weekend c2c works on this section can add time to your journey, so check schedules in advance and give yourself a bit of buffer time to arrive.
The Southend line runs all the way toSouthend Central and Shoeburyness on the Essex seaside and is one of c2c's most popular leisure routes. Weekend engineering works between Barking and Grays via Rainham occasionally mean rail replacement buses for part of the journey.

Frequently asked questions about c2c engineering works

Are c2c tickets valid on rail replacement buses?

Yes, your train ticket covers you on any replacement bus service running during c2c cancellations. Just show your rail ticket or e-ticket to the bus driver and hop on. Keep in mind, too, that your ticket is also valid on some TfL services (like the DLR and Jubilee line) when diversions are in place.

How far in advance are c2c engineering works announced?

Network Rail and c2c usually confirm engineer works, and subsequent station closure and route amendments/cancellations, around 3 months ahead of time. You will see these timetable changes when booking on Trip.com.

Are London Fenchurch Street closures common during bank holidays?

Yes, Fenchurch Street often closes for c2c engineering works on the weekend and bank holidays. The reason is straightforward, too: there are no commuters using the line on these days, so it's the least disruptive time to carry out major track and signalling upgrades.

Can I get a refund if I choose not to travel?

If engineering work affects your journey and you'd rather not travel, you can usually claim a refund on your ticket. Advance tickets bought through Trip.com are normally refundable under these circumstances if engineering works are announced after you purchased your fare.

Do engineering works affect weekend seaside services more often?

Yes, most planned maintenance takes place on Saturdays and Sundays when fewer people use the line, so weekend and bank holiday services toSouthend and the Essex coast are more likely to be affected. Luckily, there are always alternative services in place, so you don't need to change your day out plans-just allow for extra time.
