Southern Rail engineering works (October 2026)
Planning a weekend day trip around London or on the South Coast this season? You'll want to double-check for Southern rail engineering works first, and that's where this guide comes in handy. Below, you'll find a full breakdown of every upcoming closure, what alternative routes are available, and a few tips to help you travel with as little disruption as possible.

What to do if your Southern Rail route is affected by engineering works

When there are Southern engineering works taking place, you can still get to where you need to go using alternative services. Southern put on a wide range of replacement routes and schedules to cover passengers affected by the disruptions. You can expect a mix of the following:

  • Rail replacement buses between closed stations.

  • Split services (for example, trains only running between London and East Croydon rather than the full route to the coast).

  • Diversions via alternative routes.

  • Reduced frequency.

  • Altered first and last train times.

While you won't need to cancel your plans, just keep in mind that Southern's planned engineering works and replacement services can add to your overall journey time, particularly on routes towards Brighton, Eastbourne and the South Coast.

Here are a few ways to stay ahead of it all and keep your journey as smooth as possible:

  • Leave extra time for getting to Gatwick Airport. Engineering work around East Croydon and the Brighton Main Line often affects trains to Gatwick. If you're catching a flight, build in a generous buffer so you're not cutting it fine at the terminal.
  • Avoid tight onward travel plans. If you're on a replacement bus or diverted service, journey times can vary. Give yourself a cushion between arriving and needing to be somewhere.
  • Travel earlier in the day on weekends. Replacement buses tend to be quieter earlier in the morning, and you'll have more flexibility if there are any unexpected delays.
  • Book after the amended timetables are confirmed. Southern usually publishes amended timetables around 12 weeks ahead of the engineering work. Booking after these are live means you'll see the correct train times from the start.
  • Consider an overnight stay for Brighton trips. If engineering work is adding a lot of time to your journey, it might be worth turning a day trip into a weekend getaway. Trip.com has a wide range of hotels in Brighton and across the South Coast.

Stations most affected by Southern Rail engineering works

Southern's network runs from London Victoria and London Bridge through Surrey, Sussex and parts of Hampshire, so engineering work in certain areas can have a knock-on effect across the wider area. Here are the most common areas affected:

The Brighton Main Line betweenLondon Victoria andBrighton is one of the most frequently affected. This is one of the busiest commuter and leisure routes in the country, and maintenance work on this line often means amended timetables, reduced services and replacement buses operating sections of the route.
East Croydon is a major junction where several Southern lines branch off towards Gatwick Airport, Brighton, East Grinstead, Uckfield and the south coast. When engineering work takes place here, it can affect multiple branches at the same time, so even if you're not travelling through East Croydon itself, your route might still be disrupted.
London Victoria and London Bridge closures tend to happen during bank holidays, and when they do, they affect most Southern services. Trains are typically diverted to start or finish at London Bridge instead, or cut back to run from East Croydon only.
Gatwick Airport access can be affected during Brighton Main Line work, which is especially worth knowing if you've got a flight booked. If you're flying during a bank holiday weekend, always check whether there are any engineering works on the route between your starting station and the airport.
The coastal route between Brighton, Worthing and Portsmouth is also prone to weekend closures, with replacement buses covering sections like Barnham to Chichester or Barnham to Littlehampton. Services are usually still running on adjusted timetables across most of this route, just with some sections switched to bus.

Frequently asked questions about Southern Rail engineering works

Are Southern tickets valid on rail replacement buses?

Yes. Your existing train ticket-whether it's a paper ticket, e-ticket orseason ticket-is valid on any replacement bus that's been put on to cover Southern's engineering works.

How far in advance are engineering works announced?

Southern rail engineer works are typically confirmed around 12 weeks in advance. When booking on Trip.com, you'll always see the latest schedules and updated timetables.

Do engineering works often affect Gatwick Airport trains?

They can, especially during Easter and bank holiday weekends. Gatwick Airport is on the Brighton Main Line, and any work between East Croydon and Three Bridges has the potential to affect your journey. If you're flying during a period of engineering work, check the amended timetable and leave extra time for your journey.

Can I get a refund if I decide not to travel?

If engineering work significantly changes your journey, for example, adding a lot of extra time or requiring a bus replacement, you may be entitled to a refund on your ticket. Just be sure to check the terms of your fare type when you book.

Are London Victoria closures common during bank holidays?

It's rare for London Victoria to completely close, but don't rule it out over the Easter and the May bank holidays. When Victoria is closed for engineering work, most Southern services will either run from London Bridge or start from East Croydon. There are always alternative routes in place, and your ticket will be accepted on other operators and the Tube at no extra cost.
