#arrivalguide Ichkeul is 25 km south of Bizerte; louage (shared taxi) from Bizerte to the park gate is 3 dinar, then 1.5 km walk to the lake edge. Entry 7 dinar, opened 7 am–6 pm. I did the loop clockwise: lake shore (flat, muddy, bring rubber boots in winter) to the base of Djebel Ichkeul, then the 3 km switchback up the 510 m trachybasalt dome, 1.5 hr climb, 360° over the lake and the Mediterranean haze. The mountain is cork oak and lentisk; the lake is reed and open water—in Jan–Feb it holds 200,000 ducks (common coot, wigeon, shoveler). I went in March and still flushed a thousand flamingos. No water on the mountain, carry 2 L. Mistake: I wore canvas sneakers and the lake-edge clay sucked one off—keep to the boardwalk remnant near the bird hide. The park café at the gate does brik (4 dinar) and mint tea (1 dinar), cash only. UNESCO-listed but underfunded; the lake shrank after the 1990s dam diversions, so levels vary—ask the ranger what’s flooded before you plan the shore segment. Discussion: is Ichkeul better as a half-day birding stop en route to Cap Bon, or does the mountain deserve an overnight camp for dawn mist?

Spent 7 days in Tunisia with my buddy—the heat was a bit unbearable, but the views were gorgeous.

I took a few days off this year and went on a trip to Tunisia in North Africa with a high school buddy. Visiting in August meant it was incredibly sunny and dry. We were drenched in sweat from walking around every day, but the scenery was undeniably unique. On the first day, we landed and headed straight to Bizerte, the northernmost point of Africa. Enjoying the ocean breeze from the observation deck was super relaxing. We also tried some local mint tea; they put way too much sugar in it, so it was a bit too sweet. Days 2 and 3 were mostly about exploring historical sites like the ancient city of Dougga and the Medina of Kairouan. Walking on those old cobblestone paths was pretty rough on the feet—you definitely couldn't survive in thin-soled shoes. The Aghlabid Basins were just okay, so we didn't stay long. On day 4, we ventured into the Chebika Oasis and visited the Star Wars filming locations. My friend is a huge Star Wars nerd and was totally hyped, but I mostly just felt tired from trudging through the sand. It was quite windy and dusty, and my camera almost got ruined by the sand. After that, we hit up the Chott el Djerid salt lake and the Amphitheatre of El Jem. The amphitheatre is truly magnificent, but going there around 2 or 3 PM in the blazing sun was absolutely brutal. For the last two days, we headed back to the coast to see the Medina of Sousse, Carthage, and the blue-and-white village (Sidi Bou Said). The views in Sidi Bou Said are stunning and perfect for Insta-worthy shots, but it was way too touristy. The streets were packed, and the food was a bit overpriced. On our final day, we visited the Bardo National Museum. The air conditioning was a literal lifesaver! After listening to our guide's stories about the history of Carthage, we headed to the airport to fly back to Hong Kong. A few personal tips for prep: 1. Make sure to bring a European-style round-prong travel adapter. My friend and I almost brought the wrong ones. 2. Sunscreen and a sun hat are absolute musts. I used sunscreen and still got two shades darker. 3. Remember to bring plenty of Tunisian Dinar or Euro in cash, as a lot of the small shops don't take cards. 4. You absolutely need to wear a comfortable pair of walking shoes. We averaged over 15,000 steps a day, and the terrain is pretty uneven. All in all, the sights are incredible and unique, but doing this trip in the summer is a serious test of endurance. Now that I'm back home in Sha Tin, I'm definitely going to need a few days of solid sleep to recover.
