Buskerud Moments: Through Travelers' Eyes

🚂 EP.8 | Bergen Railway — Norway 🇳🇴

A train journey across the "roofs of Norway" from Oslo to Bergen 🏔️🚆

If you love views of high mountains, snowfields, lakes, and fjords, this route is another journey that offers a stunningly dramatic change in Norway's landscape 🇳🇴

The Bergen Railway (Bergensbanen) connects Oslo → Bergen, approximately 471 km long, taking about 6.5–7.5 hours. It's the highest railway line in Northern Europe, reaching a peak of approximately 1,237 meters above sea level.

✨ Highlights along the way:

🌲 Oslo → Geilo
Starting from the capital, it passes through forests, rivers, lakes, and low mountains before the landscape gradually increases in altitude.

🏔️ Geilo → Hardangervidda
The views become even more spectacular as the train enters the high mountain region of Hardangervidda. One of the largest mountainous areas in Northern Europe.

❄️ Finse
A small station at an altitude of approximately 1,222 meters, offering a wide-open landscape and stunning views of Norway's high mountains.

🏔️ Hardangerjøkulen
A large glacier near Finse is one of the most prominent landscape features of the Hardangervidda range.

🚇 Finsetunnelen
The tunnel, approximately 10.3 km long, is the longest tunnel on the Bergen Railway.

🌿 Myrdal → Voss
After passing through high mountainous areas, the train gradually descends into more lush green terrain with mountains, valleys, and waterfalls.

🌊 Voss → Bergen
The final stretch changes the scenery into Western Norway, featuring high mountains, deep valleys, and areas near fjords before arriving in Bergen.

📍 Route

🚆 Oslo → Geilo → Finse → Myrdal → Voss → Bergen
📏 Approximately 471 km
⏱️ Approximately 6.5–7.5 hours
🏔️ Highest point 1,237 m
🇳🇴 Norway

The 2026 timetable still shows service on the Oslo–Bergen (F4) route, with seasonal schedule adjustments. Therefore, it's best to check the actual travel times before departing.

What makes the Bergen Railway so interesting is that it doesn't offer the same scenery throughout the journey, but gradually takes you from city → forest → lake → high mountain plateau → snow → valley → fjord all in one trip 🚆❄️🌿
