I recently had a very special Chinese meal at the Old Municipal Building on the Bund in Shanghai.
Trip.com Group's TASTE OF CHINA is less of a restaurant and more of a two-hour culinary journey through China.

The entire space features a 270-degree wraparound screen and 360-degree immersive panoramic sound. The panda chef, "Cheng Baobao," is like a master chef version of Kung Fu Panda, guiding everyone from East, North, South, West, and Central China, to the Greater Bay Area and Shanghai, letting you enjoy the scenery while eating dishes from each respective region.
By the end of the meal, it felt like I had traveled across the magnificent landscapes of the motherland on screen.

The experience is interspersed with performances like tea art, Sichuan opera face-changing, water sleeve dancing, Shaolin kung fu, and umbrella dancing. It’s not the awkward, touristy kind of display; instead, it feels quite cohesive because it’s perfectly synchronized with the projections, music, and the pacing of the courses.

The food itself isn't just a gimmick.
The entire menu consists of 7 star-rated themed dishes, paired with 5 tea pairings, and seasonal alcoholic beverage options. Each chapter corresponds to a regional flavor, reinterpreting traditional Chinese tastes in a modern way. For international friends, it’s easy to understand; for those with a "Chinese stomach," it’s not just about pretty plating.

The cutest part is Cheng Baobao.
Even though it's a panda, there's an inexplicable sense of reliability, like a "chef leading a tour group." After eating my way through the journey with it, my belly was truly as round as Po's. And I realized, quite earnestly, that there are still so many places in China I haven't visited yet.
