It serves as a natural boundary between Fengcheng and Zhangshu, a high plateau above the clouds in the outlying Wuyi Mountains, and, more importantly, a millennium-old historical record interweaving the origins of its place names, the integrity of renowned officials, the integration of Chinese and Western cultures, and the vibrancy of local life. From a Buddhist and Taoist holy land in the Yuan Dynasty to the burial place of a Grand Secretary in the Ming Dynasty, and then a Western-style summer resort village during the Republic of China era, this vast meadow spanning ten thousand mu and its ten lakes quietly bear witness to the profound changes and cultural echoes of the Fengcheng region. · *I. Origin of the Place Name: From Hutian Qiansiqiu to the Renowned Qiansui** The history of Qiansui Hill began with a simple name – Hutian (Lake Fields). Due to the flat terrain at the summit and numerous small ponds, ten natural lakes, including Zhonghu, Dahu, Jiahu, and Xianhu, are scattered like pearls, covering an area of nearly 800 mu. Locals thus called it "Hutian." Later, because the lakes were both small and numerous, "Hutian" gradually became known as "Qiansiqiu" (Thousand Four Mounds), describing the thousands of high-altitude paddy fields (lake fields) in the area. The turning point in the place name occurred during the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty. This transformed the once unnamed hill from a natural scenic spot into a cultural landmark of Jianyi Fengcheng. · *III. Republic of China Era: An Exotic Chapter of Western Villas** The most unique historical chapter of Qiansui Hill was written during the Republic of China era, making it a rare place in central Jiangxi where Chinese and Western cultures intertwined. In the 1930s, Western missionaries were active in central Jiangxi. In 1931, Catholic missionaries Mr. and Mrs. Nie Dejiao, who were preaching in Linjiang Prefecture (now Zhangshu), hiked up Qiansui Hill and were deeply captivated by its beautiful scenery and cool climate. Upon their return, they recommended the place to Bishop Spruill. After personally inspecting the summit, Bishop Spruill immediately decided to build summer villas there. After negotiations with the stewards of the local Yang and Liu families, a lease agreement was signed and filed with the Fengcheng County government. Subsequently, workers were hired to quarry stone and begin construction, erecting 8 Western-style villas. The buildings featured walls built with cement blocks and stones, galvanized iron roofs, and glass and wire windows, making them sturdy yet simple. They housed 17 missionaries from 7 countries: Germany, Switzerland, Britain, New Zealand, Canada, Russia, and Australia. For the next 17 years (until 1949), these foreign missionaries would ascend the mountain every year during the Dragon Boat Festival and descend during the Mid-Autumn Festival to escape the summer heat and recuperate. Every weekend, the sounds of Western drums, trumpets, and accordions would echo through the mountains. They used music to attract villagers, taking the opportunity to preach. The intertwining of Western architecture, exotic customs, high-altitude meadows, and traditional villages created a rare "Western Village in the Clouds" landscape, becoming a unique historical memory of central Jiangxi during the Republic of China era. During the Anti-Japanese War, the missionaries briefly evacuated. In 1947, Bishop Spruill returned to repair the villas. After the founding of New China in 1949, the missionaries returned to their home countries, and the villa complex gradually fell into disuse, leaving only stone foundations and crumbling walls, quietly narrating that turbulent foreign past. · *IV. The park is quite large, so it's recommended to rent a stroller if you have a baby. The entire park is very child-friendly, with all flat surfaces and no steps, making it perfect for strollers! The little one also had a great time feeding the animals; it was their first time experiencing this, so we all thought it was wonderful. We're planning to get an annual pass and come often on weekends. Plus, Nanchang is very, very close by, haha! Overall, a great experience!

Orange Island is a bit of a mixed experience, and I'm honestly not entirely sure whether I'd consider it a must-visit in Changsha.It's a large, green, and pleasant park, with beautiful riverside views and plenty of space for walking. If you enjoy places with historical significance or simply want to experience a different side of the city, it's definitely worth considering.Most visitors seem to take the sightseeing train to the southern end of the island, where the famous Mao Zedong statue is located. That's also where you'll find plenty of people taking photos, so don't expect a particularly quiet experience.The main downside is that visiting the island takes quite a bit of time, especially if you want to explore it properly. And while it's certainly a nice place, I'm not sure the experience justifies spending several hours here if you have a limited amount of time in Changsha and other places you'd like to see.On the other hand, if you're simply looking for a relaxing walk through a green park, with opportunities to stop by the river and enjoy the scenery, it's a lovely option.Overall, I'd say it's worth visiting if you have some extra time or are particularly interested in Chinese history. Otherwise, I wouldn't necessarily put it at the very top of your Changsha itinerary.
