23°C Heyuan: The ultimate kid-friendly getaway! Stay at a hot spring creek-side homestay and explore the countryside — traveler post in Lianping

23°C Heyuan: The ultimate kid-friendly getaway! Stay at a hot spring creek-side homestay and explore the countryside

When traveling with kids in summer, I always look for places where you can see a creek when you open the door, step down to play in the water, and soak in a hot spring at night. Reshuizhen in Heping County, Heyuan, Guangdong, is a cool hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the Jiulian Mountains. It's a 2.5-hour drive from the Pearl River Delta—just a quick trip to escape the sweltering heat. The mountain breeze blows away all the summer heat, and everywhere you look, there are rolling green mountains and crystal-clear creeks. The air is filled with the scent of grass, trees, and damp earth. The best part is that there's a boutique homestay nestled between the mountains and water. Its white walls and dark tiles blend subtly into the countryside, with a large vegetable garden behind it and a babbling creek in front. As soon as the kids put down their luggage, they grabbed their little nets and rushed to the creek, and the adults could finally slow down their pace amidst the streams and green mountains. 📍 [2-day, 1-night leisurely cool getaway] Day 1: Drive about 2.5 hours from the Pearl River Delta to Nanhu Village, Reshuizhen, Heping County, Heyuan, and check in to Xindongju Homestay. In the afternoon, wade in the shallow creek in front of the homestay and catch fish. In the evening, take a walk along the rural paths and watch the sunset paint the vegetable garden and creek in warm orange hues. At night, soak in the local natural hot spring in the courtyard to wash away the day's fatigue. Day 2: In the morning, experience picking vegetables in the homestay's backyard ecological garden, and take the kids to catch fish and shrimp by the creek. In the afternoon, head to the Reshui Rafting Center to experience the "No. 1 Rafting in Eastern Guangdong." The 6.5 km course is surrounded by green mountains on both sides. It's super exciting for older kids. After having enough fun, head back home at a leisurely pace. 🏨 [Creek-side rural hot spring courtyard] We stayed at Xindongju Homestay this time. Built against the mountain with white walls and dark tiles, it retains the charm of traditional Hakka architecture while incorporating minimalist design, blending subtly into the lush green valley behind it without looking out of place. The best part is the natural hot spring pool right in the courtyard; soaking in the warm, soothing water at night while looking up at the stars is amazing. There's a babbling creek right in front of the homestay and a large, lush ecological vegetable garden behind it. As soon as the kids put down their luggage, they put on their sandals and rushed into the creek. The adults sat on the stone steps by the creek, drinking local tea and watching the kids splash around. This kind of relaxation is so much better than sitting in air conditioning. 🎯 [Three highlights tested with kids] 💦 Fishing time in the creek: There's a clear creek right at the entrance of the homestay. The water is shallow, just covering the ankles, and the bottom is full of smooth pebbles. The kids squatted by the water with little nets, catching small fish and shrimp, occasionally flipping over stones to look for little crabs underneath. They giggled whenever water splashed on their faces and wouldn't move for the whole afternoon. This joy of being able to play in the water right outside the door is so much more comfortable than going to crowded tourist spots. 🌾 Picking experience in the ecological vegetable garden: There's a large ecological vegetable garden in the backyard of the homestay, growing various seasonal vegetables. The kids carried little baskets into the garden, bending down to pull radishes and pick green beans. They were so excited to show the adults the fruits and vegetables they picked themselves, still covered in soil. This authentic rural experience is more vivid than any picture book. 🌊 Cool and exciting rafting: The Reshui Rafting Center is nearby. The 6.5 km course passes through 28 beautiful pools and 16 rapids, surrounded by green mountains and steep cliffs. The kids sat on the raft, gripping the handles tightly. When rushing down the rapids, water splashed onto their faces, soaking them with a cool sensation. They screamed and laughed non-stop. This feeling of rafting through the valley is incredibly exhilarating. 💡 [A few practical tips] The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains is significant, so be sure to bring a light jacket. The stones by the creek are slippery, so non-slip water shoes are a must. Since playing in the water gets you wet, bring extra changes of clothes. Bring enough mosquito repellent, as there are quite a few bugs in the valley. Rafting has age and height restrictions; for younger kids, it's recommended to just play in the shallow water on the shore. The homestay only has 9 rooms and is often fully booked on weekends during peak season, so remember to book in advance. After this two-day, one-night trip, the whole family was immersed in the coolness of the creek and the greenery of the countryside. The kids were completely exhausted from playing, and the adults were able to fully relax. It's truly rare to have such a comfortable and relaxing family time during the summer vacation.

The most beautiful romance of spring is the vast expanse of Yingzui peach blossoms covering the hills of Shangping — traveler post in Lianping

The most beautiful romance of spring is the vast expanse of Yingzui peach blossoms covering the hills of Shangping

People always say that spring is a time to attend a flower festival, but only when you walk into the ten-thousand-mu peach forest of Shangping will you understand what it means to fill an entire mountain and countryside with romance. This is the hometown of China’s Yingzui honey peach. Over 50,000 mu of peach orchards stretch layer upon layer along the terraces and slopes. It’s not just a delicate decoration; it’s a breathtaking sea of crimson across the hills, like clouds and rosy clouds. The gnarled, ancient branches hold clusters of crimson flower buds. When the wind blows, petals fall softly. Looking up, you see pink clouds; looking down, a path of flowers. Even your breath is wrapped in the sweet scent of spring. No need to deliberately find a photo spot. Standing anywhere among the peach trees, beside the ancient paths, or on the viewing platforms, you’ll find a natural canvas with soft light. Wearing light white, cream, or pale blue dresses, turning back in the sea of flowers, strolling, gently picking petals—every frame looks like it stepped out of an ancient painting, gentle and healing, with an atmosphere that’s simply divine. Early morning is best, with mist curling around the branches and sunlight filtering through petals like scattered gold. The mountains and fields are quiet, with only the sound of wind and the fragrance of flowers. Evening is enchanting too, as the setting sun dyes the peach forest warm orange. The distant mountains are shaded in blue-green, and the flower shadows are gentle, as if all the tenderness of spring is folded into your sight. The romance of Shangping is not just about seeing flowers. It’s walking through the ten-li Peach Blossom Corridor in Xiaoshui Village, seeing the Hakka old houses with blue bricks and black tiles hidden among the flowers; it’s meeting thirty-year-old peach trees in Zhong Village, with sturdy branches and even more intense blossoms, full of years and warmth; it’s slowly walking along the ancient Guangdong-Gan Road, with the Guangdong peach blossom sea on one side and spring countryside on the other, every step a new scene full of vitality. No need to travel far or deal with crowds. In this quiet mountain countryside far from the noise, slow down your days and lighten your worries. Watch the flowers bloom and fall, listen to the whisper of the spring breeze, and let the peach blossoms across the hills heal all your fatigue and rush. The blooming season is just right, and romance waits for no one. This spring, you must come to Shangping to experience the exclusive romance of Yingzui peach blossoms. Capture the most beautiful image of spring, keep it in your eyes and heart, and let it become a gentle memory to savor all year long. 📍Address: Shangping Town, Lianping County, Heyuan ⏰Blooming period: Late February to mid-March (peak bloom) ✨Tips: Wearing light colors makes for better photos; comfortable shoes are recommended for walking in the hills; fewer people and more beautiful scenery in the early morning

3 Hours from Guangzhou: Guangdong Locals Have Their Own Stunning "Aotai Route" — traveler post in Lianping

3 Hours from Guangzhou: Guangdong Locals Have Their Own Stunning "Aotai Route"

I’ve long been fascinated by Huangniushi, one of the three most dangerous peaks in northern Guangdong. This ridge standing at the border of Guangdong and Jiangxi provinces—how could it not be considered Guangdong locals' own "Aotai Route"? Finally, December arrived with cooler weather. In autumn, Huangniushi is covered with golden meadows all over the mountain. On clear days, you can witness sunrise and sunset like a century’s sunset glow. Walking along the ridge basking in warm, gentle sunlight is so delightful! This time, I wore BEIN SPACE merino wool base layers, with sun-protective cuffs as a nice detail. The merino material kept me dry and comfortable from dawn to dusk, and when the temperature dropped, it kept me warm. Route 1️⃣ Large Loop: 23 km, over 1700 m ascent, estimated 15+ hours climbing. Starting from Yanzi Zhensheng Breeding Farm — Elephant Trunk Rock and Flying Rock — Huangniushi Summit — Ridge — Return to start. Very difficult, not for beginners!! Route 2️⃣ Small Loop: 17 km, 1437 m ascent, also quite challenging, not for beginners! Route 3️⃣ Traverse Line: 14 km, 1300 m ascent. Starting from Longnan Luyeminsu — crossing bamboo forest, streams, and steep scree slopes — ridge line — Huangniushi summit — endpoint. Route 2️⃣ Out-and-Back: 7 km one way, 14 km round trip. After reaching the summit, return the same way. ➡️ If your fitness and experience are limited, it’s recommended to choose routes 3️⃣ or 4️⃣ (traverse or out-and-back). For those driving to do the traverse, you can contact the guesthouse host in advance for a ride back to the start for 120 RMB per car. I camped on the summit this time and took the out-and-back route. 📍 Starting Point: Longnan Luyeminsu Guesthouse. Parking fee 20 RMB/day. There are restrooms, accommodation, meals, and water available. The shop seems to be open only on Fridays and weekends. 🧗 Itinerary: 3 hours from Guangzhou, altitude 1430 meters. The summit section is somewhat dangerous and a bit challenging for beginners. ⚠️ Notes: Try to start early to set up your tent and finish dinner before dark. Nights are bone-chilling cold in the south. If you’re crossing during the day without camping and descend before dark, one mid-layer of P cotton/fleece/light down jacket is enough. 🎒 Gear Sharing: ▫️ Hiking Date: November 30, 2025 ▫️ Shell Jacket: Kailas softshell ▫️ Lightweight Down: Berghaus 800 fill power ▫️ Dynamic P Cotton worn during climb: BEIN SPACE ▫️ Shell Pants: BEIN SPACE Yufeng Lightweight Outdoor Pants ▫️ Base Quick-Dry Shirt: BEIN SPACE Merino Wool Base Layer ▫️ Heavy-Duty Shoes: Kailas MT5-3 Zhada Yellow ⛺️ Camping Gear: The summit is very windy, and nighttime temperatures drop to just a few degrees, very cold. Sleeping bag is Black Ice B700, tent is Sanfeng Piaoyun 2, Mobi Garden air mattress with R-value 2.1, egg nest pad, headlamp, power bank, etc. ⛺️ Recommended Campsite: It’s best to camp at p15! Less wind and an excellent spot to watch the sunrise!

Peaks like hairpins, pinning life between the mountains and waters — Beitou Town, Heyuan — traveler post in Lianping

Peaks like hairpins, pinning life between the mountains and waters — Beitou Town, Heyuan

In Lianping, Heyuan, lies a hidden town called Beitou. The town gets its name from being built at the head of a water weir—Beitou. Traveling south along the provincial road, karst peaks greet you—towering summits and winding, clear waters. It possesses both the majestic ruggedness of the Jiulian Mountains and the gentle, serene beauty of Guilin's waters, earning it the nickname "Little Guilin." The town is now a provincial geopark, with many unnamed caves hidden deep within the mountains, like ellipses left behind by the Earth. At dawn, the first rays of sunlight pierce through the mist, landing on the rice paddies. The fields at Yangzi'ao bloom twice a year—once with waves of rice, once with rapeseed flowers—their staggered ridges outlining the waistline of the mountains. Climbing to the observation deck, you see golden rice ears, dark green peaks, and white-walled houses layered all the way to the horizon. "The river is like a green silk ribbon, the mountains like jade hairpins"—it turns out this poem isn't exclusive to Guilin. The most moving part of the town is the Yanyan Ancient Temple, hidden inside a karst cave. Every mountain has caves, and every cave has wonders, but this temple is carved directly into the belly of a limestone cave. Over a thousand years ago, Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, took refuge here and practiced in the cave for two years. Locals still pass down the saying, "First came Yanyan, then Nanhua." The cave entrance is small, but inside it is warm in winter and cool in summer. Light leaks in through cracks in the rock, falling on the remaining lotus pedestal—the base of time itself. The Buddha statue is gone, but the faith remains. A few steps further is Xiatian Ancient Village. With over 600 years of history, the Hakka walled village—its fortifications, ancestral halls, and corner towers—sits quietly at the foot of the peaks, like a family genealogy protected by the mountains. Travelers who come here to take photos capture a different kind of slowness: the peaks are in no rush, the rice is in no rush, and the temple bells are in no rush either. May you also find yourself in Beitou, living your days like a corner of a landscape painting, where the wind turns the pages and the mountains sign the inscription.

Queya Mountain in Heyuan | Guangdong’s hidden cloud-top windmill mountain, a breathtaking sea of clouds and sunset — traveler post in Lianping

Queya Mountain in Heyuan | Guangdong’s hidden cloud-top windmill mountain, a breathtaking sea of clouds and sunset

Tired of crowded, commercialized attractions? Head to Queya Mountain in Dongyuan, Heyuan. This lesser-known peak, tucked in the foothills of the Jiulian Mountains, is named for a natural giant notch on its main peak that looks like a missing tooth from afar. The unique shape gives it the name Queya Mountain. There is no admission fee, and you can drive all the way to the summit. Windmills, sea of clouds, sunrise, and starry skies are all here in one spot, making it the ultimate healing mountain escape near the Pearl River Delta. Queya Mountain stands 1,125 meters tall. Along the ridge, more than 30 giant white windmills are neatly arranged, stretching across the rolling hills. The rugged industrial style blends with the gentle green mountains, creating a layered, picturesque scene. Standing beneath the windmills and looking up, the hundred-meter blades turn slowly, the wind’s low hum feels like a quiet conversation with the forest. Every photo you take looks atmospheric without any filter. The gentle ridge trail is easy to walk, perfect for beginners and family outings. Wild grasses grow along the path, dotted with small wildflowers. Walking through, the lush greenery soothes all the stress from city life. The most worth-seeing sight at Queya Mountain is the ever-changing sea of clouds. After rain clears or on mornings with big temperature differences between day and night, mist rises in the valleys. Layers of clouds roll and surge, forming an endless white ocean, with only the mountain peaks and windmill tops visible. Walking along the ridge feels like strolling in the clouds, as if stepping into a Studio Ghibli sky castle. The mist flows with the wind, sometimes gathering to cover the mountains, sometimes dispersing to reveal vast greenery. From afar, you can catch a glimpse of Wanlv Lake shimmering in the sunlight. The mountains and lake together create a vast view that opens your heart and mind. Sunrise and sunset offer exclusive mountain romance. Windmill station 26 is the perfect spot to watch the sunrise. Climb to the top before dawn and wait for the first sunbeam to pierce the clouds. Golden light spreads over the sea of clouds, and the windmills and mountains are outlined in warm gold, creating a breathtaking scene. The windmill viewing platform at station 25 overlooks the entire orange sea sunset. In the evening, the sun slowly sinks, painting the sky with layers of pink, purple, and orange. The windmills cast gentle silhouettes, the evening breeze cools the heat, and you can enjoy a peaceful mountain dusk alone. Far from city light pollution, the summit is also an excellent stargazing spot at night. On clear nights, the sky is filled with stars, and the Milky Way arches clearly across the horizon. Look up to see countless stars. Bring a tripod to capture stunning starry sky photos. Camping enthusiasts can set up tents on the summit meadow, fall asleep to the sound of the wind and stars, and experience an immersive mountain stay. For self-driving, navigate to Chanzi Ding. It takes about 1.5 hours from the city. The last stretch includes some gravel roads; sedans can pass slowly, but SUVs are more stable. There are no shops or restrooms at the summit, so bring enough drinking water and snacks. The temperature difference between day and night in the mountains exceeds 10℃, so even in summer, bring a windbreaker and prepare for sun protection and slip resistance. Check the weather forecast before your trip. Avoid going up if it’s rainy, as the mountain roads get slippery. No need to travel far to find a fairyland. Drive to Queya Mountain on the weekend, chase the sea of clouds, wait for the sunset, listen to the windmills turn, and let yourself relax in the fresh mountain breeze, embracing a free and leisurely slow pace of life.

Also, please keep your belongings safe to avoid loss. My darlings, the beautiful scenery of Lianping's ten-mile stretch of peach blossoms is beckoning you! Quickly invite your family and friends to this southern peach paradise and embark on a springtime journey of discovery! 🌸 This trip will surely leave you with unforgettable memories.

Kunming South Railway Station Butterfly Valley Family Trip | Vienna Hotel + Butterfly Fruit Exploration Guide The most delightful surprise when traveling with kids to the Kunming area was discovering the hidden gem, Honghe Butterfly Valley! Located about a 3-hour drive from Kunming city center, it's perfect for a 2-day, 1-night weekend trip. Here's our practical guide: 🏨Accommodation Recommendation: Vienna International Hotel (High-Speed Rail South Station Branch) · Free shuttle service from the high-speed rail station is fantastic! As soon as we got off the bus with our kids and luggage, we saw the driver holding a sign waiting for us. · The family room has a super spacious 35㎡, enough room for two suitcases and a stroller. · The freshly cooked rice noodles for supper saved us from being hungry after arriving late. 🦋Butterfly Valley Exploration TIPS: 1. Best viewing period: May to July is the peak butterfly season. We went in early June and were lucky enough to see thousands of butterflies swirling around us. 2. Must-have items: Sun hat, insect repellent spray (available at the scenic area but expensive), telephoto lens (taking close-up photos with your phone will disturb the butterflies). 3. Hidden activity: Follow the rangers to find "butterfly fruit" (actually a tree species that larvae love to eat). It's like a treasure hunt for kids. 🚗Transportation Guide: · By car: From Kunming, navigate to "Honghe Butterfly Valley" via Shanshan-Kunming Expressway + Tianhou Expressway. · By bus: Kunming South Bus Station → Jinping County, then take a taxi to the scenic area (about 40 minutes). Helpful Tip: There are many hiking trails within the scenic area, so we recommend bringing non-slip shoes for children. The most heartwarming moment of this trip was seeing my daughter carefully reach out to let a monarch butterfly land on her fingertip. Nature truly is the best classroom; even a normally restless child could quietly observe butterflies collecting nectar for half an hour! Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom

The Ocean Parade was lively and adorable, and the kids didn't want to leave. The park's paths were wide and not crowded. The Rainforest Restaurant was easy to find, the service was friendly, and we finished eating just in time for the next show – the timing was perfect.

South Wudang Mountain Scenic Area

Longnan Wudang Mountain, with an altitude of over 500 meters, has a sightseeing ladder that leads directly up the mountain, making it friendly for the elderly and those who prefer a leisurely pace. If you want to experience the climb, it takes about 3 hours round trip, which is manageable. You'll pass by Tuntian Cave (Figure 7), a natural stone gate, and walk along the cliffside glass walkway – perfect for taking photos.

Guangzhou Chimelong Tourist Resort

I think 300 yuan per person is great value for money. It includes a free cable car ride for a panoramic view of the entire park, and a free mini-train ride for a close-up look at the animals on the African savanna – you get to see everything from different angles. We also spent 300 yuan to drive through the park and get a more intimate look at the animals – a very immersive experience. It wasn't the weekend, so it wasn't too crowded. The park staff were very responsible in their explanations. We also ordered a three-person set meal inside the park, which was a bit pricey, but reasonable for the park's price.

Chimelong International Circus

I’ve a great memorable and interactive time in the Chimelong International Circus. I purchased at here since I was not able to purchase in WeChat as I don’t have China phone number. The view is so great and all of the performers are just infront of me. Totally recommend this experience! It’s just a pity that it’s only 1hr! :)

Gaoyiling Tourist Area

The scenery is beautiful, featuring Danxia landforms rarely seen in northern China. However, it gets extremely sunny at midday, so it's best to avoid visiting around noon. Going earlier, before noon, will allow you to see most of the sights. Alternatively, go after 2 PM, as there's less shade in the area.

Nanyue King Museum-The Site of King's Tomb

I'm ashamed to admit I haven't visited the Museum of the Tomb of the Nanyue King in all these years in Guangzhou 😅, but I was incredibly lucky to stumble upon a special exhibition of Egyptian artifacts. Seeing two great civilizations in one visit was an immersive experience that I highly recommend! The museum is located on Xianggang Mountain, built on the original site of the tomb. This is truly unique; it's not just about moving exhibits into the hall. Standing in the tomb passage, you can feel the original layout of the tomb. It's not just looking through glass from afar; you're genuinely on an archaeological site. The details of the Nanyue King's tomb itself are breathtaking. The jade burial suit, gold seal, and chime bells are far more impactful than textbook pictures. The information panels are very clear, making it easy to understand the funerary practices, craftsmanship, and history of the Nanyue Kingdom in Lingnan during the Han Dynasty—it's not just a superficial visit. The biggest surprise was the concurrent Egyptian exhibition! I hadn't planned ahead, but once inside, I discovered how wonderful it was to see different civilizations side-by-side. Having ancient Egyptian stone carvings and ornaments alongside Nanyue artifacts in one visit, comparing the craftsmanship of two ancient civilizations, was a truly novel experience. The exhibition hall has a well-designed layout, preventing overcrowding. The lighting is also suitable for viewing the artifacts, avoiding glare that obscures details. Tips: It's recommended to book online in advance. Audio guides are available for rent inside the museum; otherwise, you might miss the historical context. The ground-level tomb area has many steps, so wear comfortable shoes. The museum isn't extremely large; allowing 2-3 hours is just right and won't be too tiring. Overall, it offers excellent value for money and is a must-see for history enthusiasts. Catching a special exhibition was a delightful surprise; the experience of encountering two ancient civilizations simultaneously is rare, and I'll definitely visit again!
