I spent a week of summer vacation in Ostuni. The old townscape, enveloped in white walls. Walking down the narrow alleys, I had a strange feeling, as if I had stepped into a movie scene. And then there's the food in Puglia. The simple dishes, highlighting the natural flavors of the ingredients, were truly delicious, somehow rustic and unpretentious. Yet, the taste is unforgettable. Compared to Milan, the cost of food and accommodation felt much more affordable. Using Ostuni as my base, I visited Alberobello, Matera, Monopoli, Bari, Lecce… Each city I visited had a different character, and the more I learned, the more I was drawn to the charm of Puglia. I made one mistake... I completely underestimated how big Puglia is!
There are so many beautiful towns to visit, both along the coast and inland. You can easily split the region into three different areas, and that’s a lot to cover. In one week, these are all the places I managed to visit. It’s true that some of these towns only need half a day because they’re quite small, but it really depends on how you like to travel. I naturally travel at a faster pace because I like seeing as much as I can. That said, I also think it makes perfect sense to choose fewer places and enjoy them more slowly. My main base was Polignano a Mare, but I also spent one night in Matera and one in Vieste. Matera is close enough to visit as a day trip from Bari or Polignano, but I’m so glad I stayed overnight. Sleeping in a cave hotel and waking up to the most incredible views over the Sassi was one of the highlights of the trip 🤩 Gargano was the part of the trip I really didn’t want to miss. I spent two full days there, but honestly, I could have easily stayed four or five. There’s so much to explore, from the beaches and sea caves to the different towns and the national park. The next time I’m in Puglia, I’d love to explore the south around Lecce. I enjoyed this region so much that I already know I’ll be back one day. Hopefully this gives you a bit of inspiration while planning your own itinerary.
