Genuinely, if you have a Swiss Travel Pass (or certain day passes), this whole trip is completely free. · **The Vintage Funicular:** This is a proper old-school wooden train. Try to get to the front of the queue so you can stand at the very front. When you pass the train coming the opposite direction, there’s a local tradition where everyone waves at each other—a bit cheesy, but quite sweet.
· **The CabriO Cable Car:** This is the world’s first double-decker cable car with an open-top upper deck. Standing upstairs with the wind in your hair is brilliant and the views of the valley are unreal. Fair warning though: it gets incredibly windy and properly cold up there, even if it’s roasting hot at the bottom. Pack a light jacket.
· **The Summit:** There's a mini marmot zoo at the top. They’re basically just fat little things sunbathing, which is cute enough but don't expect a full safari. Since I always look for historical interest, Stanserhorn caught my eye. The journey starts with a vintage 19th-century funicular railway before transitioning to the modern double-decker open-top cable car.

Here is my exact log and some practical details from the day:

1. The Journey & Costs:
We took the SBB train from Lucerne station to Stans. It took exactly 18 minutes. From Stans station, it is a flat, 5-minute walk (about 450 steps) to the historic base station.
If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, the entire trip—including the vintage wooden train and the CabriO cable car—is completely free. Normally, a round-trip ticket costs 74 CHF, so this saved us a significant amount of money.

2. The Ride Up:
The first leg is on a beautiful wooden funicular from 1893. It slowly takes you through green pastures up to the Kälti intermediate station. From there, you board the double-decker CabriO. I went straight to the upper open deck. A quick warning: it is incredibly windy. I had to double-knot my headscarf to keep it from flying away, and sunglasses are absolutely necessary. The 360-degree view of Lake Lucerne is stunning, though, and free of glass reflections.

3. On the Summit (1,898m):
Once at the top, we did the short loop walk. It’s an easy, paved path. We spotted a few marmots in their enclosure—very cute, but signs strictly forbid feeding them.
For lunch, we sat at the Rondorama revolving restaurant. It rotates slowly, taking about 43 minutes for a full turn. I ordered the traditional Swiss alpine macaroni (pasta with cheese, potatoes, and onions, served with applesauce). It was hearty, warm, and cost about 22 CHF, which is standard for Swiss mountain tops.
