If you’re staying around Lucerne and want a mountain day trip that doesn't cost an absolute fortune, you need to put Mount Stanserhorn on your list. Genuinely, if you have a Swiss Travel Pass (or certain day passes), this whole trip is completely free. Given how expensive Swiss mountain excursions usually are, the value for money here is ten out of ten. Here is the honest breakdown of how to do it, what to expect, and whether it’s actually worth your time. ### The Route (Dead easy to navigate): 1. Catch the train from Lucerne to Stans (takes about 20 minutes). 2. Walk 5 minutes from Stans station to the vintage funicular railway. 3. Take the wooden funicular, then swap straight over to the open-top cable car to the summit. It’s a seamless transfer. ### The Highlights (And what's actually worth it): · **The Vintage Funicular:** This is a proper old-school wooden train. Try to get to the front of the queue so you can stand at the very front. When you pass the train coming the opposite direction, there’s a local tradition where everyone waves at each other—a bit cheesy, but quite sweet. · **The CabriO Cable Car:** This is the world’s first double-decker cable car with an open-top upper deck. Standing upstairs with the wind in your hair is brilliant and the views of the valley are unreal. Fair warning though: it gets incredibly windy and properly cold up there, even if it’s roasting hot at the bottom. Pack a light jacket. · **The Summit:** There's a mini marmot zoo at the top. They’re basically just fat little things sunbathing, which is cute enough but don't expect a full safari. If you visit in summer, you might also catch some of the mountain trail running races, which gives the peak a really lively, energetic atmosphere. ### My Verdict: Absolutely worth it. It’s much less chaotic than some of the more famous peaks like Pilatus, and you can’t beat the price (especially if you have a pass). · Pro-tip:* If you start relatively early, you can easily pair this with Mount Rigi in a single day. Just take the bus or boat over to Weggis or Vitznau after you come down. It makes for a brilliant, packed day out.
