Encounter Swan Lake and the "Upside-Down Fuji" at the Foot of Mt. Fuji! At Lake Yamanaka in Yamanashi, Even the Sunset Becomes a Diamond atop the Peak. — traveler post in Ube

Encounter Swan Lake and the "Upside-Down Fuji" at the Foot of Mt. Fuji! At Lake Yamanaka in Yamanashi, Even the Sunset Becomes a Diamond atop the Peak.

Mt. Fuji, shimmering lake reflections, and white swans gliding gracefully across the water—this enchanting scene is exactly why Lake Yamanaka captures the heart. When you visit, it's best to leave your schedule a bit open. Take a leisurely stroll along the lakeshore, watch the clouds drift across the mountain's waist, and give yourself a moment to wait for Mt. Fuji to reveal its face. Lake Yamanaka, located in Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, is the largest and highest of the Fuji Five Lakes, with a surface elevation of approximately 980.5 meters. Its vast waters and highland environment offer more than just scenery, with various activities like boat tours, cycling, fishing, and resort stays available. 🌿 From Sacred Pilgrimage to Highland Resort Lake Yamanaka was formed by Mt. Fuji's volcanic activity, and its connection to the mountain extends into the spiritual lives of people. In the past, followers of the Mt. Fuji faith would travel to the lakes at the mountain's base to perform "Mizugori"—a ritual purification by water—before offering prayers with reverence. Lake Yamanaka was a significant site for these pilgrimages. The lakeshore, now a popular spot for walks and photography, once carried the profound devotion people felt toward the mountains and nature. During the Taisho era, villas began to be built around Lake Yamanaka, and it gradually developed into a summer retreat and health resort. With the subsequent growth of tourism, hotels, guesthouses, and various leisure facilities appeared along the shore. In 2013, Lake Yamanaka was designated as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Fujisan, sacred place and source of artistic inspiration." Understanding this history adds a layer of depth to the waters before you; this landscape holds the long-standing story of how people have lived alongside Mt. Fuji. 🦢 Where did the swans come from? They've actually been living here for decades. The Mute Swans commonly seen at Lake Yamanaka have an interesting history. In 1968, two pairs—a total of four swans—were introduced from Tokiwa Park in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Their descendants eventually settled in the lake area, becoming an iconic part of the scenery. Because of this, there are swans living in the lake year-round, so you don't have to wait for winter migratory birds to see them. However, they move freely, so capturing a photo of a swan and Mt. Fuji together still requires the right location, good weather, and a bit of luck. Maintain a respectful distance when taking photos to let the swans swim naturally; the resulting shots will look much more authentic. Instead of rushing for the perfect shot, standing by the lake and observing slowly offers a much more comfortable travel rhythm. 📷 🗻 Choosing the right spot to view Mt. Fuji For first-time visitors, put "Nagaike Shinsui Park" on your list. Located on the north shore, this is a popular spot to admire Mt. Fuji across the water, perfect for a walk or photography to experience the grand scale of the mountain relative to the lake. The Hirano Lakefront is another favorite for photographers, especially those seeking the "Sakasa Fuji" (Upside-Down Fuji). This refers to the reflection of Mt. Fuji on the lake's surface; it usually only appears clearly when there are few clouds, low wind, and the water is perfectly still. When planning a photography trip, check the wind conditions as well as the sun. Even if Mt. Fuji is completely visible, ripples on the water can blur the reflection. 💎 A sparkling moment on the summit: Diamond Fuji Another phenomenon that fascinates photographers at Lake Yamanaka is "Diamond Fuji." When the setting sun aligns perfectly with the summit of Mt. Fuji, the light appears to rest on the peak, creating a sparkling moment like a diamond. Around Lake Yamanaka, this can be observed from mid-October to late February during sunset. The exact viewing spot changes daily, so you'll need to check the specific location and time for your visit; you won't see it from the same spot every day throughout the season. If you're lucky enough to have calm waters, you might even witness a "Double Diamond Fuji" including the reflection in the water. This surprise requires perfect weather, making it a moment worth anticipating with an open mind. 🚢 For a different perspective, board the Swan Sightseeing Boat In addition to viewing from the shore, you can board the "Shiratori no Mizuumi" (Swan Lake) sightseeing boat from the Asahigaoka Pier. The swan-shaped vessel is very memorable. Designed by Eiji Mitooka, the interior features wood and soft curves, adding a touch of warmth to the lake cruise. As of October 2026, the official fares are announced as 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for children (prices adjusted starting April 1, 2026). Schedules vary by season, and the boat type may change or sailings may be canceled due to strong winds or poor weather. Be sure to check the operation status on the day of your visit. 💡 Reasons to recommend Lake Yamanaka · The expansive lake surface allows you to admire Mt. Fuji from various angles. · The combination of swans, mountain views, and reflections makes walking and photography a joy. · A blend of pilgrimage history and resort development gives the landscape a story. · You can simply stroll the lakeshore or add activities like boat tours depending on your budget. For transportation, you can take a highway bus from Shinjuku toward Lake Yamanaka, or take a local bus from Mt. Fuji Station. When booking, confirm your stop based on the shore you want to visit; Nagaike, Hirano, and Asahigaoka are in different areas and are not within immediate walking distance of each other. I suggest planning at least half a day to slowly explore one or two lakeshore spots. Lake Yamanaka is at a high altitude, and it can get particularly cold in the evenings during autumn and winter. Bringing a windproof, warm jacket will make waiting for the sunset much more comfortable. 📍 Location Check: Lake Yamanaka 📍 Address: Yamanakako Village, Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan 📷 Recommended Viewing Spots: Nagaike Shinsui Park, Hirano Lakefront 🚢 Boarding Location for Sightseeing Boat: Asahigaoka Pier 💴 Cost: Lakeshore walks are free in open areas; boat tours, rentals, and some parking lots are extra. 💴 "Shiratori no Mizuumi" Sightseeing Boat: Adults 1,200 yen, Children 600 yen 🗓️ Diamond Fuji Season: Approximately mid-October to late February (location and time change daily) Swans Photography

[Yamaguchi Trip] Famous Japanese restaurants

When I went on a trip to Yamaguchi in the past, I stayed at the ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel in Ube and ate at the Japanese restaurant "Unkai" inside the hotel, but the hotel closed at the end of last year. I really liked the food there, so I was sad to hear that it had closed, but when I heard that the head chef there for 21 years had gone independent, I was so happy that I went there right away 🥰 The restaurant has a calm Japanese atmosphere ✨ You can eat carefully prepared dishes using seasonal ingredients ♡ ────────────── 🥢 Colorful lunch... 3,500 yen (9 kinds of seasonal dishes/tempura/full meal/dessert/coffee) ────────────── ・Turnip simmered ・Octopus simmered in cherry blossom sauce ・Flounder saikyo-yaki ・Sardine nanban-zuke ・Sashimi ・Shiraae ・Haruna ohitashi ・Miyazaki beef ichiboro roast ・Lotus root buns with sweet bean paste I was able to try a little bit of everything, and I really love this kind of thing❣️ The tempura was also crispy♡ For food, I had temari sushi (sea bream/salmon/kou) On this day, Squid) The round shape is cute, and it's easy to eat🍣 For dessert, we had "Sweet Potato Brulee" It was moist like sweet potato, and had strawberries inside The dessert was also high quality🍠 The owner, who has been working exclusively in Japanese cuisine, makes elaborate dishes with all his heart, and they were all delicious, and the service was also pleasant🥰 Japanese Cuisine Hanto 📍7-28 Unoshima-cho, Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture ⏰Lunch 11:30-14:00 ▫️Dinner 17:30-20:30 (Closed) Wednesday 🅿️Available #YamaguchiTrip #YamaguchiTourism #ShimonosekiTrip #ShimonosekiTourism #YamaguchiGourmet #YamaguchiLunch #UbeGourmet #UbeLunch #Spring0YenTourism

Tokiwa Park

The photo was taken in the evening, so it's not the best, but it's actually a pretty beautiful spot. I sometimes use it as a walking route. Ube is known as the city of sculptures because there are Pokemon Go spots all over the place. There are monuments all over Tokiwa Park. The zoo and amusement park are nice, but there's plenty of walking to do even in the free zone.
