Best time to go to Angkor Watt is definitely early morning. I got myself three days pass which cost $35. Every day I was waking up before 5 AM, packing my breakfast, getting dressed and riding by bicycle from Siem Reap towards the temple. It took me about 35 minutes to get there from the city centre. The weather is cool in the morning and the ride is very pleasant. Sunrise starts at around 6AM. By the time I was near the lake, it was a getting bright and I could see the sun slowly rising above the temple. There are definitely less people compare to daytime but still there are some tourists to watch this breathtaking show. After the sunrise when the gates are open you can walk around the temple before it gets too crowded and hot. Make sure your clothes covers up your shoulders and knees otherwise you will need to buy sarongs at the nearby shops. Angkor Wat, also known as the Small Angkor (Angkor Wat), is located in a rectangular area within the small circuit. Don't be fooled by the word 'small' in its name; on the contrary, Angkor Wat is the largest temple in the world, measuring 1,500 meters in length and 1,300 meters in width, covering an area of about 200 hectares. Angkor Wat is considered a symbol of Cambodia and is also one of the earliest examples of Khmer architecture, witnessing the glorious era of the Khmer Empire. The name 'Angkor Wat' translates to 'Capital Temple' in the Khmer language, indicating its significance. In 1992, Cambodia was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and in 2007, it defeated more than fifty other candidates in the global vote for the New Seven Wonders, advancing to the final twenty-one. Construction of Angkor Wat began in 1113 and took a full 37 years to complete, with the effort of the entire nation at that time. Whether in design, layout, intricacy, or scale, it can rival any of the world's most outstanding architectural works and is one of the must-visit attractions in Angkor. The outer perimeter of Angkor Wat features a 5.7-kilometer-long moat that surrounds the Small Angkor, symbolizing the ocean around the land; the rectangular inner city part of Angkor Wat measures 1,500 meters by 1,300 meters, symbolizing the Himalayas; the temple's central area has five main towers representing the five sacred mountains of Hinduism, with the central and tallest tower standing at 65 meters, symbolizing Mount Meru, the center of the world. The tips of the towers represent heaven, the dwelling place of the deities; the five main towers are situated on top of a three-tiered rectangular gallery, stacked layer upon layer like a pyramid, symbolizing the elements of earth, water, and wind at the location of Mount Meru. Inside the temple, there are nearly two thousand Apsara carvings and a large number of carvings depicting Hindu mythological stories, none of which are identical, all are masterpieces of extraordinary craftsmanship. To visit Angkor Wat, one must first cross the moat, which is filled with water from the Siem Reap River. In addition to serving a defensive purpose, the moat was also used for irrigation during the dry season and flood relief during the rainy season. While crossing the moat, take a moment to notice the carvings on both sides of the bridge, which tell the Hindu creation myth of the churning of the Ocean of Milk. After crossing the moat, visitors reach the largest central western gate of the Small Angkor, which has five gates divided according to different ranks, and the middle gate was only accessible to the king at that time. Now, all tourists can pass through this gate and experience the feeling of being a king. It is worth mentioning that among the nearly two thousand Apsara carvings within Angkor Wat, only one has a slight smile with visible teeth, located near the western gate; visitors can try to find it if they have the chance (I didn't manage to find it). Exiting the western gate leads to a straight central causeway leading to the temple of Angkor, nearly 500 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, very imposing. On both sides, there are libraries, a common feature in many temples of Angkor. Directly in front of the libraries are two pools, which were once used for bathing before worship by the people, and now the pool on the left has become the famous Lotus Pond for watching the sunrise. The Lotus Pond is always popular because the water perfectly reflects the temple's silhouette, a common image on Cambodian postcards, especially before sunrise each day, when this spot becomes a coveted location for photographers and tourists alike. One of the most impressive temples in Angkor. I came here in the morning before it opens by my bicycle. It’s great to see how the whole village of Angkor is waking up. You can see motorbikes full of things rushing to work. You can buy sweets from local ladies. And there is no light better than the morning light to enjoy this place. It was very quiet and atmospheric. I could walk around and inside the temple’s labyrinths, observing the architectural masterpiece with four huge stone faces looking down on me from the top. Angkor Wat, as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, only when you are there can you be deeply shocked by it. If you like history and ancient architecture and prefer to take your time, it's worth staying for a week. If you're just having a quick look, two days is probably enough. 1. Three must-visit places: Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, and Ta Prohm. The first is a must-see for sunrise, the second is known as the 'Smile of Khmer', and the third is the filming location for Tomb Raider, where ancient ruins are impressively entangled with old trees. 2. Sunrise at Angkor Wat, sunset at Phnom Bakheng. Unfortunately, I went early and didn't see either. A reminder that there's no need to go too early, leave half an hour for walking. 3. Regarding transportation, I took a night bus from Phnom Penh and arrived at 4:20 AM, negotiated with a tuk-tuk driver for 8 dollars, went to buy a ticket first, and then to see the sunrise. Highly recommend the Grab app, it's super useful for taxis, and the prices are relatively reasonable. Also, the main attractions in the small circuit are relatively concentrated, so it's not bad to take a taxi there and then rent a bicycle. Another option is to rent a motorcycle, they are available everywhere. 4. Regarding food, there are actually places to eat at the entrance of each attraction, and you can bargain. For example, coconuts are listed at 2 dollars on the menu, but actually, it's just 1 dollar. Some meals are listed at 7 dollars, but 4 dollars is enough. There are more options at night, like the restaurants I went to every day, where a meal generally costs two or three dollars, and beer half a dollar. And there are places with signboards. Also, don't easily ask for tap water to drink, I was charged 4 dollars by one restaurant. 5. Regarding accommodation, choose according to your own conditions, if you like the lively atmosphere near Pub Street, if you prefer quiet, stay a bit further away and it's cheaper. 6. Regarding money exchange, some people say that the airport is not a good place to exchange money, 1 dollar for 4000, but at the Angkor Wat ticket office, it's 1 dollar for 4130. However, it's more cost-effective to spend local money because local vendors all calculate at a rate of 1 to 4000. 7. About the attractions, I didn't go to the outer circle, just walking around the inner circle was exhausting, I ended up lying down and falling asleep in a pile of rubble. Besides the three major temples, the other surrounding ones are relatively ordinary. Banteay Kdei is a bit special, also a place to watch the sunset. Chau Say Tevoda was built with Chinese aid, also known as Ta Keo, really tall, fewer people, I saw a couple sitting at the top of the tower waiting for the sunset, quite beautiful. About safety: Very safe. Next time I go, I want to stay a few more days. It was too tiring to visit many places in a short time. About the internet: I recommend Metfone, plug and play, very convenient. It's also available in hotels, but many hotels have poor internet.
