Having a romantic weekend away with your significant other can be just what you need to rediscover your love for one another - no matter the time of year. Of course, it's also a fantastic way to relax and have a well-deserved break.

Paris has been done plenty of times, as have other Cupid-approved destinations, such as Rome and Venice. So, we've decided to recommend some other European cities that offer romance in abundance.

Where else can you bring your sweetheart for a refreshing trip? Below are some excellent alternatives.

When you step foot in Bruges, you'll immediately be hit with its picturesque beauty. Meander around the old canals, bridges, and cobblestone paths and take in the mediaeval architecture found in the city.

Then, grab your partner's hand and make the thrilling climb up the Belfry of Bruges. Once you're up the 366 steps, you'll find a dazzling view of Bruges whilst you're up 83 metres (272 ft) high.

Afterwards, you can take a romantic boat tour down the waters. You'll get amazing views you wouldn't get on land - everything is always prettier from a canal boat - so be sure to snap plenty of pictures.

When you're tired, you can retire to a charming room in Grand Hotel Casselbergh Brugge, which places you a short walk away from the Grote Markt. You can take a walk through this area, peeking into the numerous shops - or if you prefer a more intimate experience, you can take a horse-drawn carriage ride through town.

After a delicious meal (and a beautiful view) at one of the many outstanding restaurants in Bruges, take a reflective stroll at Begijnhof, the only preserved beguinage here. It was built in 1240, and people still live here today - so please be quiet and respectful as you tour the area.

Park Güell in Barcelona

Barcelona is certainly a party city - and, of course, if that's what you and your sweetheart are into, then that's great! However, Barcelona has much more to offer in terms of romance. It's especially good if you enjoy walking, as there's so much to see on foot.

For one, this city is home to many of Antoni Gaudi's architectural masterpieces, such as Park Güell and Casa Batlló. But his pièce de résistance is the Sagrada Familia, the incredible cathedral which is impossible to miss, standing out proudly along the Catalan skyline.

To really impress your significant other, visit the Montjuïc Castle, which sits atop Montjuïc Mountain. It's actually a military fortress from 1640, but that doesn't make it less gorgeous. You'll need to ride the funicular to get there, which displays a spectacular view of Barcelona.

Then, take them on a sunset sail along the Mediterranean coastline. It'll be a memorable experience that'll rekindle your love.

For your trip, stay at the Two Hotel Barcelona by Axel, which is a treat. It's an adults-only hotel with a heated rooftop pool and sun terrace for the ultimate relaxation experience. It's located in the heart of the gay district, so it's an LGBTQIA+-friendly space. But, of course, all are welcome!

Amsterdam boasts the beauty of Bruges - which isn't a surprise considering the city's close proximity - and the party potential of Barcelona. But whilst Bruges feels smaller and quieter, Amsterdam is larger and livelier.

The city has over 60 museums, including the famous Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. You can spend your entire holiday together getting lost in art.

Amsterdam also has over 160 canals and literally hundreds of bridges, so a canal cruise with drinks and cheese is absolutely lovely. On land, you can tour some of the eight windmills to get a unique perspective and learn about their history.

If the weather's nice, have a picnic in Vondelpark, Amsterdam's largest park. If your bike skills are decent, then you can also rent bikes and go sightseeing before and after your picnic - just stay focussed, as the locals commute on their bikes...

One place to stop off at is the Bloemenmarkt. It's a long, busy street with stalls filled with colourful flowers, and is the only floating flower market in the world. You can pick up a bag of tulip bulbs to bring home and plant as a reminder of your time in the Dutch capital.

Book a stay at the Leonardo Boutique Museumhotel, which puts you in the heart of the city, right next to the Rijksmuseum. Even better, you'll have a splendid view of the courtyard garden and the canals. In the morning, wake up early and surprise your loved one with a cup of freshly roasted coffee from Roasters & Toasters, located right inside the hotel.

Yellow tram on the streets of Lisbon

The beautiful capital of Portugal is famous for its gorgeous, hilly coastline. Not only that, but it has sublime pastel-coloured buildings that are pleasing to the eye, making it one of the most aesthetically-pleasing places for couples to travel.

For an unforgettable experience, visit the most famous landmark in Lisbon: São Jorge Castle. This mediaeval castle was built in the 11th century as a defence against invaders, so you'll see many ramparts and towers. If you climb up these, then you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city.

As well as exploring the inside of the castle, you can also have a picnic in the pristine gardens and take a stroll on the peaceful paths afterwards. We recommend staying until sunset, as it'll be the ultimate romantic setting as the orange light touches everything and serenely lights up the ramparts.

In Lisbon itself, you can take one of the city's famous trams. Gloriously old-fashioned, they're reminiscent of the trams you'll find in San Francisco, and they'll take you two through all the brilliant views of Lisbon for some great photos.

After getting off the tram, take a walk along the city's riverfront. When you get tired and hungry, step into one of the many exquisite restaurants that serve the freshest seafood around.

Rest your weary heads at Lumen Hotel & The Lisbon Light Show, but not before catching the immersive light experience; it's the first hotel in the city to have one. It'll show you the whole of Lisbon through a video mapping show!

Dubrovnik is one of the best-preserved mediaeval cities still in existence - so if you enjoy gazing at architecture from the days of yore, this is a must-go destination for a couple's holiday.

One of the first things you should do upon arrival is walk the city walls. These offer an unreal view of both the city and the crystal blue waters. You'll see exactly why producers of Game of Thrones chose Dubrovnik as one of their most famous filming locations.

To get a closer look at the water, take a boat tour. There are many nearby islands where you can explore in a quieter setting.

After your tour, why don't you grab some towels and sunbathe with your sweetie on the beach? The view is simply stunning, and you may find it difficult to leave.

To admire some Baroque architecture, go to the Dubrovnik Cathedral, which was built in the 17th century. The exterior is pretty, but the interior is even more gorgeous. You'll find old paintings and a treasure hall with tons of relics.

Spoil your partner rotten by booking a stay at Rixos Premium Dubrovnik. This 5-star hotel has jaw-dropping panoramic sea views and has both indoor and outdoor pools to soak in. Plus, there's a 2-storey spa with a Turkish bath and more. There's even a casino on the premises if you're feeling lucky.
