Quiz question - do you know the highest accessible point in Europe? If not, let us get you acquainted.
The answer is the Jungfraujoch in the heart of Switzerland, at an elevation of 3,454 metres (11,361ft) above sea level. A 'saddle' connecting two major mountains over 4000m (the Jungfrau and the Mönch), from here you have an absolutely spectacular view of the Aletsch Glacier - the longest glacier in Europe, at a frankly mind-boggling length of 22.6 km, and nearly a km deep. That's a lot of ice…

Curious? Let us tell you a little more about the Jungfraujoch.
Up at the top, over 2 miles in the sky, you have a year-round guarantee of snow and ice. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the journey will prove to be spectacular, no matter the weather. From the very top at the Sphinx Terrace observatory, you can enjoy magnificent views of the aforementioned Aletsch Glacier, as well as sweeping views of the mountains of Italy, France, and Germany. And even if the clouds block your view, you can still enjoy the Alpine Sensation, the Ice palace, the highest Lindt chocolate store in the world and more…
A tip: if you are visiting in the summer, you may even be able to take a walk over the glacier.

The Jungfrau Railway network will take you up to the highest accessible point in Europe, the Jungfraujoch, with ease and comfort - and along the route, you will be rewarded with spectacular views all around.
If you are staying in Interlaken, simply take a train to Grindelwald terminal (this trip will take you approx. 33 minutes). From here, you can take the Eiger Express to reach the Eiger Glacier (at 2320 metres above sea level) in just 15 minutes. The Eiger Express was newly opened in 2020 and is the most modern tricable gondola in the world. A nice perk: The seats of the Eiger Express are heated...
From the Eiger Glacier, take the Jungfrau Railway to the top. The railway was opened in 1912 and was a pioneering work of engineering among mountain railways - and you'll see why. The cogwheel railway transports you through 7 kilometres of tunnel traversing the Eiger and Mönch mountains, all the while climbing 1,400 metres in altitude.
You can book your tickets from Interlaken all the way up to Jungfraujoch and back withTrip.com:

The Jungfrau Region has a lot to offer - no matter the season.
In the winter, it’s a wonderful place to hit the slopes with your skis or snowboard, as well as sledging or winter hiking in the colder months. In the summer, the ice disappears and the whole landscape changes to a magnificent green. Go out for a walk and drink in the sites of the towering mountains surrounding you.
If you're the adventurous type, you can even race down the mountain in a cart or mountain bike. And if you need a cool-down at the end of the day, why not go swimming in one of the two lakes at Interlaken?

If you are looking for even more stunning views - and who can get enough of a good vista? - you might want to visit Harder Kulm at 1322m above sea level. From Interlaken, you can get up to Harder Kulm in just 10 minutes by taking the funicular Harder Railway, which will take you 1.43 km up. From here, you can enjoy incredibly Instagrammable views over the panoramic mountain range of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, as well as Interlaken and its two surrounding lakes. Oh, and if you’re hungry, you can enjoy a meal at the panorama restaurant.
There are multiple ways of getting into the Jungfrau region.
Arriving by plane: Fly to one of Switzerland’s airports (Zurich, Basel, or Geneva), and take an intercity train connection to Interlaken Ost.
Arriving by train: With its central location within Europe, Switzerland is served by international trains from over 12 countries. Simply switch trains in Basel or Bern to connect to Interlaken (Jungfrau region). There is even a direct ICE-connection to Interlaken from Frankfurt-Braunschweig-Berlin and EC Karlsruhe-Mainz-Cologne-Düsseldorf-Amsterdam.
Arriving by car: You can reach the Jungfrau region by car easily in both the summer and the winter season. From Basel, Zurich, or Geneva, you go via Bern or Lucerne/Brünig Pass. From the South of Switzerland, you can reach the Jungfrau region via Grimsel - or Susten Pass (only in the summer) or via Simplon Pass and afterwards Lötschberg Car Transport.
We would suggest staying either in Interlaken or Grindelwald. Interlaken is located in the valley and is nestled nicely between two beautiful lakes, while Grindelwald is located further up in the mountains and is therefore closer to the peak and to the ski slopes.
