Wuhan Train Stations: Where and How to Take a Train?

Author's Profile Picture

Wuhan has three railway stations, and there is a good reason for this. The network was designed in part to ease pressure on the Yangtze River bridges, which have long served as key crossings between the two sides of the city.

Wuchang mainly serves trains heading south, Hankou handles many services towards northern China, and Wuhan is the main hub for high-speed trains. It makes sense on paper, but the layout can still catch travellers out when booking tickets.

Don't worry, though. Trip.com's guide explains which station to choose for your destination.

Wuhan's railway stations at a glance

Three stations share the city's rail traffic, with services organised largely by route and direction rather than passenger type. Here's what you need to know:

  • Wuhan Railway Station, in the east, mainly serves high-speed trains.
  • Hankou Railway Station, north of the Yangtze River, serves many trains heading towards northern China.
  • Wuchang Railway Station, in the south, serves many trains heading towards southern China.
📌 Trip.com tip: All three stations may serve the same destinations, but not necessarily on the same services. Always check the station name on your ticket before booking a taxi, as the three stations are several miles apart.

This arrangement developed as China's high-speed rail network expanded during the 2000s and 2010s. Rather than concentrating all services at one station, the authorities distributed rail traffic across the city, which lies on both sides of the river.

The result? A more efficient way to manage rail traffic, but one that requires a little more care when booking than travelling through a city with just one main station.

Wuhan Railway Station: The best station for high-speed trains

Wuhan Railway Station

With its crane-inspired roof symbolising the Yellow Crane, a symbol of Wuhan, Wuhan Railway Station is located in Hongshan District, east of the city centre. It is a major hub on the Beijing–Guangzhou high-speed rail line and serves more than 35 destinations, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Chengdu, Chongqing, Xi'an, Nanjing and Hangzhou.

One detail that often surprises travellers is that, unlike many major Chinese railway stations, Wuhan Railway Station does not offer luggage storage. It is best to travel light or arrange somewhere to leave your bags before arriving.

How do you get there?

💡 Trip.com tip: The station is connected to Metro Line 4, Line 5 and Line 19, making it easy to reach the city centre without taking a taxi. However, it is around 42 km from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport, considerably further away than the city's other two main railway stations.

Facilities at Wuhan Railway Station

  • 🍔 Food outlets on the mezzanine level (third floor) and in the departure hall, including Chinese food, noodles, KFC and McDonald's.
  • 🏗️ A four-level building, including a basement, with standard waiting areas and security checkpoints.
  • 🚆 Separate arrival and departure halls to help manage passenger flows.
  • 🎫 Self-service ticket machines that may only accept Chinese identity cards, plus ticket counters for passengers using foreign passports.

  • 🏧 ATMs near the main entrances.

Main train routes from Wuhan

Train schedules vary, so it is difficult to provide a fixed list. Wuhan Railway Station serves a wider range of high-speed destinations than the city's other two main railway stations, with regular services connecting it to major cities across China.

Hankou Railway Station: Your gateway to northern China

Located on Development Avenue in Jianghan District, north of the Yangtze River, Hankou Railway Station claims to be China's largest European-style railway station, covering nearly 80,000 m². Its grand, intricately detailed design reflects a time when railway architecture was built to impress travellers.

The station mainly serves trains heading to northern China, with high-speed services on routes such as Shanghai–Wuhan–Chengdu and Wuhan–Guangzhou, connecting passengers to more than 28 destinations.

The station's architecture takes inspiration from major European railway stations of the early 20th century. It still attracts visitors who sometimes come just to photograph its impressive facade, without catching a train.

How do I get to Hankou Railway Station?

👉 Metro Line 2 connects directly to the station's underground level, making it the easiest way to reach the city centre or Tianhe International Airport, around 23 km away.

Jinjiadun Long-distance Bus Station is also just a few hundred metres away, making it convenient for onward coach connections.

Station facilities

  • 🍜 Restaurants, shops and a nursing room on the second floor, above the waiting areas.
  • 🧳 Left-luggage storage, costing around CNY 5–10 depending on the size of your bag.
  • ♿ An assistance desk for older passengers and people with reduced mobility, with volunteers available to help.
  • 🎫 Dozens of ticket counters on the ground floor, on either side of the main entrance.

How do I buy train tickets?

There are three ways to buy tickets, all available for the three main railway stations in Wuhan:

  • Through Trip.com (recommended): Book in English and link your e-ticket to your passport. There is no need to visit a ticket counter, making this a convenient option for international travellers.
  • Through the 12306 app: China's official railway ticketing platform. It offers comprehensive booking services, with an English version available alongside its Chinese interface.
  • At the ticket counters: All three stations have numerous counters, allowing you to buy tickets and get help if needed. Self-service ticket machines generally accept Chinese identity cards and may not support foreign passports. Foreign travellers with online bookings can usually enter the station and board the train using the original valid passport linked to their booking.

Wuchang Railway Station: Your gateway to southern China

The oldest of Wuhan's three main railway stations, Wuchang Railway Station is located south-east of Zhongshan Road, in Wuchang District, where the Beijing–Guangzhou and Wuhan–Kowloon railway lines meet. It handles most trains heading towards southern China.

Wuchang serves high-speed destinations such as Xianning, Yichang, Xiangyang, Nanchang, Shanghai and Jingmen. It also operates conventional C, D, K and Z services to destinations such as Beijing, Hangzhou, Kunming and even Harbin, on the other side of the country.

With such a wide range of services, Wuchang is the most versatile of Wuhan's three main stations, although it is not the easiest to reach.

How do you get there?

🚨 Trip.com tip: Wuchang is the furthest of the three main stations from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport, at around 35 km away. If you are flying into Wuhan and connecting with a high-speed train, check carefully whether your departure station is actually Wuhan or Hankou instead.

Facilities at Wuchang Railway Station

  • 💼 A VIP lounge and a nearly 1,000 m² waiting room with padded seats
  • 🤰 A dedicated room for expectant mothers, in addition to the two main waiting rooms
  • 🍵 Restaurants, newsagents, a mini-cinema and a tea room on the second floor
  • 🅿️ A forecourt covering more than 19,000 m², with 333 parking spaces
  • 🚇 Direct access to Metro Line 4
  • 🏧 Cash machines in the main concourse
  • 📶 Free Wi-Fi in both main waiting rooms

What to check before booking train tickets from Wuhan

Unlike cities where information about each railway station is clearly separated, many booking websites group all three of Wuhan's main stations together in the same list of results. This means that a search for trains from Wuhan to Beijing may show departures from Wuchang and Hankou side by side. This is not necessarily an error.

👉 What to do: Before confirming your booking, check the departure station for every train you are considering, not just the first result. Wuhan's three main railway stations can be 15–20 km apart, so going to the wrong one could easily mean missing your train.

Surprisingly, this is not necessarily a mistake. It reflects how the rail network works: the same destination may be served by high-speed trains departing from Wuhan or Wuchang, as well as conventional services from Hankou.

The longer the list of results, the more likely you are to see departures from all three stations listed together.

Which Wuhan railway station should you choose?

It depends on where you are travelling next:

  • Heading to Beijing, Xi'an or northern China? Hankou is often the more practical choice, although some trains also depart from Wuchang.
  • Travelling to Guangzhou, Shenzhen or southern China? Check departures from Wuchang, which handles most of these services.
  • Catching a flight from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport? Consider Wuhan or Hankou Railway Station, both of which are closer to the airport than Wuchang.
  • Does your ticket simply say “Wuhan” without specifying the station? Check the full ticket details carefully. The complete station name should be shown somewhere on your ticket.

In any case, allow extra time if your hotel is near a different railway station from the one your train departs from. Travelling between Wuhan's three stations by taxi can easily take 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic. During peak hours, crossing the Yangtze River bridges can take even longer.

Many travellers use all three stations during the same trip. For example, you could arrive in Wuhan by high-speed train from eastern China, travel to Yichang and the Three Gorges from Hankou or Wuchang, then head south from Wuchang. This fits well with the way Wuhan's railway network is organised.
