Parkhotel du Sauvage

We stayed here for two nights whilst trekking the Via Alpina route. We were very pleasantly surprised at the level of accommodation, our room was large and airy, well furnished with the most comfortable bed and, unusually, tea and coffee making facilities. The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful and breakfast was plentiful and varied, taken in a very grand dining room. The hotel is a beautifully preserved example of the old fin de siecle hotels once inhabited by the well to do of europe. Many interesting artefacts and pictures. We weren't able to eat evening meal here as the hotel only caters for large groups but that wasn't a problem as there are plenty of restaurants in Meiringen. Well worth a stay and close to the Sherlock Holmes museum which is also well worth a visit.

Lovely family run hotel, in central Meiringen. We chose this hotel because of its position and reviews. It is situated just a short walk from the station. The room was small, but very clean and overlooked the square. The only issue we had was that it was stifling hot in the room and the hotel does not have air conditioning (as many others in Switzerland do not). We found ourselves having to sleep with the windows wide open and even then it was difficult to get more than a couple of hours. The breakfast was not extensive, as many of the others we visited during our trip, but was nice and sufficient. The one thing we would have liked (aside from aircon) was the facility to make tea/coffee in our room as in our experience this is standard in 4* hotels.

Friendly staff at the reception, okayish at the breakfast (maybe a language issue? replying ”What?” to a customer politely calling isn't the appropriate answer!). None of them speak French. The room looked really nice, was well equipped and on the back street so quiet as well. The bed was comfortable, water kettle & tea available in the room. Travelling with our dog, I had checked before if he was allowed and nowhere was it written that there was an extra fee and the confirmation didn't mention this either despite announcing that we were with one in the comment box. On the + side, comfortable dog bed, bowl and treat was ready in the room, which was a really nice touch. Also a fee for the underground garage, mentioned nowhere. Warning: parking spots are narrow, we have a mid-size car which barely fit, so if you have an SUV or large car you may want to park in the street (free at night). Breakfast had a good choice, fresh pressed orange juice machine, quite varied choice. There is no restaurant at the hotel, but it is in the center of the village which has many options literally a few steps away, so absolutely not an issue.
Das Hotel Sherlock Holmes

The hotel has not been repaired since its creation, all very old, as if a ruined Soviet sanatorium in the province that has been living in the last few days. The bathroom was more than repaired in one of our rooms (all the cheapest). Everywhere the smell of old, 100-year-old carpet. Service: The feeling that the host of the hotel from India has pulled his family to work and they serve the hotel as much as they can: in training pants and t-shirts(wear what was), not knowing where they are and what to do- here is the whole service. We have not seen a poorer breakfast even in the simplest European hotels, and in this, for a minute, one night for two costs 250 francs!!! So breakfast: cruissans, bread, one of the cheapest cheese(living in Switzerland - I know what I'm talking about) and ham, cut fruit, yoghurt and cooked eggs; coffee from coffee machine and tea, juice from bags - everything. We didn 't risk dinner here because it is likely the same woman in training pants that cleans the tables for breakfast. If possible, I recommend not spending money on this poverty, given that the room in the old and respectable Parkhotel du Sauvage is cheaper! If it cost 2 times cheaper - there would be no claims, to stay a night is quite appropriate, but again - the total inconsistency of price and quality was struck.
