Our experience was far from pleasant.
1. Poor Communication & Responsiveness
A WhatsApp group was created upon check-in, but it felt like its sole purpose was to ask what time we wanted breakfast. When we first arrived, the windows along the corridor couldn’t be closed, and despite reaching out via the WhatsApp group and calling, we received no response. The issue was only resolved the next morning when the receptionist was finally available.
2. Unreliable Transport Arrangements
Illa B&B is located on a very narrow cobbled street. While cars can technically access it, most drivers won’t drive in. It’s about a 10-minute steep uphill walk from the main square — manageable but inconvenient, especially with luggage. We relied on Illa’s recommended transport partner for an early morning airport ride. Our flight was at 9am, so we requested a pickup at 7am. By 7:10am, there was still no sign of the car, and no update despite us messaging in the WhatsApp group. We eventually had to ask the receptionist for help, only to be told the driver was stuck in traffic and would arrive at 7:30am. We ended up booking an Uber, which arrived in under five minutes — and still had to haul our bags down to the main street ourselves.
3. Inconsistent Breakfast Service
We weren’t expecting breakfast at this price point, so having one with a beautiful view was a nice surprise — a simple spread of pineapple juice, coffee, bread, and fruit. However, we were disappointed by what seemed like a double standard. We had an early Machu Picchu tour and asked if we could get our breakfast earlier at 4am. We were told it wasn’t possible, which we accepted. But the next morning, we saw packed breakfasts prepared and left out for other guests. That left a sour taste.
4. Uncomfortable Room Conditions
There’s no heating or air-conditioning, and the room was freezing. We had read some reviews mentioning this, but didn’t expect it to be this bad. Even with bedroom slippers, the cold, hard floor was unbearable. After a long day out, returning to the room wasn’t something we looked forward to.
Overall
Other than the view during breakfast, there was little to enjoy. For us, the lack of basic responsiveness, inconsistent service, and uncomfortable conditions made this a stay we wouldn’t recommend or repeat.
