This is an awful place and the owner, Alan, is probably the rudest person I have come across in hospitality. He tries to disguise his rudeness behind a quirky, funny facade but doesn't manage very well. He has zero people skills and really should not be in the hospitality business. How they have managed to survive is beyond me. Supposedly an Eco lodge, however hand-soap in the bathroom is cheap, chemical-heavy rubbish decanted into a different container. Energy saving bulbs are used in the bedside lamps, these are so dim you'd be better off lighting a candle, so therefore you have to use the big overhead fan light. According to the in-room brochure, recycled water is used for the laundry, this is simply an excuse to give you hard, threadbare towels. The 'eco-friendly' headboard is a pile of sticks nailed together, making it super uncomfortable and basically impossible to lean against. The bedding is old and tired. The pillows are so thin you would need 5 just to have a comfortable height. As per their brochure, being an eco-lodge, there is no aircon, we were told to simply close the sliding door and keep the bathroom windows open, however this doesn't create any airflow as there are no other windows in the bedroom (no windows adjacent the sliding door). I'm not sure how legal this is even. The bathroom windows can also only be opened a very small way as there is a wooden plank nailed on the outside to prevent one from opening them wider. The tv is super tiny and mounted very high on the wall just below the ceiling. A booklet with lots of rules and sarcasm-heavy do's and don'ts in the room. For example, you may not use your room towel to swim with (fair enough) but they will only give you a pool towel if you stay 3 nights or more, otherwise you have to pay for the use of the pool towel. Similarly, if you want a robe and staying less than 3 nights, you have to pay. They make it quite clear that if you leave anything on your bed, they will not clean your room. Going as far as to say that if you want to live like a 'pig' who are they to judge, but they won't clean your room. Lots of stairs and a rickety wooden railing to get to the bar and pool area and you have to access the breakfast room via the back end of the house which is not inviting at all. The supposed heated pool is most definitely not heated. The wooden deck has beautiful views but can get very hot in summer and I don't recall seeing any umbrellas up there. The bar is locked up with a bell mounted on the wall and the owner tells you if you need a drink to ring the bell but then laughingly adds that he may or may not come to serve you depending on his mood. Breakfast was ok. This place is seriously over-priced for the state of the property and the rooms, never mind the rudeness of the owner. Not value for money at all and I can't even think of a single redeeming quality that might make me want to recommend this place. Look for elsewhere to stay in Montagu, t
