Han Mountain, Han River, and Han Gong Ci

Han Yu spent just over seven months in Chaozhou, Guangdong, and brought the advanced culture of the Central Plains to Lingnan. He drove away crocodiles, emancipated slaves, improved water conservancy, promoted education and talent cultivation, and did many good deeds for the people. He was worshipped as a deity by the locals, and the people of Chaozhou renamed the Penholder Mountain to Han Mountain, and the Crocodile Creek below it to Han River. The Han Wen Gong Ci is located at the foot of Penholder Mountain in the east of Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province. It was first built in the second year of Xianping of the Northern Song Dynasty (999 AD) and is the earliest existing memorial temple for the Tang Dynasty literary figure Han Yu. The Han Wen Gong Ci is backed by Han Mountain and faces the Han River. The main building is divided into two sections, front and back. The beams inside the temple are hung with plaques inscribed by famous writers, and the path in front of the temple is a straight stone stairway with fifty-one steps.
