Seeking my roots.

When I was a boy, my mom told me that I’m part-Ukrainian and part-Japanese, but I never really understood what that meant. In the summer of 2019, I made a trip to Kyoto, where I learnt more about the other part of my heritage, the dormant part. I learnt about the grandfather whom I’ve never met, I learnt the family name that I finally learnt how to pronounce (Ūchi, kanji: 尉遲), and I learnt about the extended family I have in Japan. That was a world before COVID, before the Russia-Ukraine war. Fast forward to 2022, international tensions are high, and traveling is still restricted in some parts of the world.
