JAYSON KNIGHT

Baishuitai, the Cotton Castle of Shangri-La

Located at the foot of Haba Snow Mountain, in Sanba Township, Shangri-La City, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, Baishuitai has an altitude of 2380 meters and covers an area of about 3 square kilometers. Every inch of soil here is sacred and elegant, in shades of milky white and some light yellow. This is due to the calcium bicarbonate in the water, which, after being exposed to sunlight, leaves behind calcium carbonate as a white precipitate when the water evaporates. It is known as the 'Fairyland Fields' and in the Naxi language, it is called 'Babuzhi', meaning a lotus flower that grows gradually, and it is the largest travertine terrace in China.
