#visithongkong
Tucked away amidst the bustling streets of Hong Kong lies a hidden gem of tranquil spirituality, the Man Mo Temple. Stepping into this ancient sanctuary feels like entering a portal to another time, where the scent of incense weaves through the air, and a hushed reverence envelops all who enter.

Michaela (@uncoveringcities) One of Hong Kong’s most famous urban temples⛩️
One of Hong Kong’s most famous urban temples, Man Mo Temple sits on busy Hollywood Road in Sheung Wan, between trendy restaurants and old-school Chinese antique shops. With its double-eave, green tiled rooftop and courtyard layout, it’s an excellent example of Qing Dynasty architecture.
One of 4 historical temples in Hong Kong, this one was built from 1847 to 1862. It is a very special place to visit, very beautiful and buzzing with people. Here you can see people actively honouring their ancesters, lighting up incense coils ans sticks in the proces. The temple is higly recommended if you are interested in chinese/Hong Kong history and will give you a glimpse of the traditional way of living.#hongkong #tripblazers #urbanexplorer

Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road
The Man Mo (or Miu) Temple is for the worship of the Civil / Literature God ‘Man Tai (or Cheung)’ and the Martial God ‘Mo (or Kwan) Tai’. Built in 1847 and compromised of three temples (Man Mo, Lit Shing and Kung So), the largest Man Mo Temple complex in Hong Kong is in Sheung Wan on Hollywood Road. It is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.
The nearest MTR is Sheung Wan, but you can also reach the temple via bus no. 26 which travels along Hollywood Road and stops at the Landmark and Sheung Wan Station.
Nearby is Shing Wong Street. It used to be home to an array of street art and painted steps, but sadly only a small area remains with it as it was painted over and removed.
There are a few hotels nearby, such as Hotel Madera Hollywood, One 96, the Putman, the Mercer and even a lower budget Travelodge also on Hollywood Road. I would love to try some of them out!

As you stroll down Hollywood Road, you will smell the incense from the Man Mo Temple long before you see the building. The temple was built in 1847 and is often remembered for its smoke-filled interior, where incredible coils of burning incense hang from the ceiling.
Here, worshipers pay tribute to Man, the god of Literature, and Mo, the god of War. For those looking to see into the future, fortune-tellers are on-site and will advise you for a small fee. Note, there are multiple Man Mo temples throughout Hong Kong, but this location on Hollywood Road is the largest and most famous.

Free entrance. Yes! From the outside, this temple is deceptively plain. Inside, it’s all red and gold and smoky incense. Light filters down through the hazy smoke. Huge coils of incense hang from the ceiling, each with small red cards attached, where people have handwritten their wishes. As the incense burns, the smoke carries the wishes to the heavens. It really is a beautiful temple.

Visit the Man Mo Temple to pray for your child's success and good fortune in their studies and career
The incense at Man Mo Temple has always been thriving.
Regardless of wealth, who doesn't wish for their descendants to have a good education and a bright future? Therefore, people come to Man Mo Temple to worship.
The main deities worshipped here are Wen Di (Wenchang Dijun), who presides over literature and officialdom, and Wu Di (Guandi), who represents loyalty and military strategy. In addition to the two main deities, the temple also houses the tablets of Bao Gong and the City God. Every autumn, there is an autumn sacrifice ceremony to thank the deities of literature and martial arts and to pray for blessings for Hong Kong.
The Man Mo Temple complex was built between the 27th year of the Daoguang era (1847) and the 1st year of the Tongzhi era (1862) during the British colonial rule of Hong Kong, making it one of the earliest Chinese-style temples built during that period.
The current Man Mo Temple is a complex consisting of the Man Mo Temple, Lit Shing Kung, and the Assembly Hall. Lit Shing Kung was built to worship Guanyin and other deities such as Lü Zu. The Assembly Hall served as a place for the local Chinese community to discuss matters and resolve disputes.
The Man Mo Temple complex is located in the middle of Hollywood Road. It is open to the public from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm daily.
Visitors can tour the site for free and are provided with three incense sticks. Donations are welcome.
The stone lions outside Man Mo Temple are famous, erected in the 1st year of the Xianfeng era (April). The carved dragon door panels and columns inside the temple were restored during the Guangxu era. The incense burner in the shape of a golden deer has also appeared in many movie scenes.

A two-day, one-night free stroll through Hong Kong
After many years, I came to Hong Kong for a free stroll. Arrived at West Kowloon Station at noon, walked to find the hotel located next to Jordan Station on the Tsuen Wan Line, left my luggage at the hotel and started the first day of strolling. Tsuen Wan Line Jordan Station-Central Station, switched to the Island Line to reach the end of Hong Kong Island, Kennedy Town, then took the tram back to Central for a stroll (the tram terminus is right in Kennedy Town), Man Mo Temple in Central - Tai Kwun~Mid-Levels Escalator all done in one go, returned to the hotel to have dinner in Mong Kok, continued strolling and taking night photos near Mong Kok after dinner, slowly made my way back to the hotel, completing an absolutely proactive day of strolling.
Day two of strolling in Hong Kong, having morning tea overlooking Victoria Harbour - Central Market (Master Ho Fan's favorite shooting location) ~ took the ferry to Yau Tsim Mong ~ M+ Museum ~ Avenue of Stars K11 Art Mall ~ hurried back to West Kowloon high-speed rail, perfectly completing the second day's strolling mission.

📷Take a stroll in Central, Hong Kong (with recommended route). Central, where modernity meets tradition, walked 30,000 steps in a day, every moment worth capturing.
Recommended route from Shenzhen: Take the Futian High-speed Railway to West Kowloon ➡️ Walk to the Star Ferry and cross the sea to Central Pier (or take the subway) ➡️ Queen's Road Central ➡️ Lan Kwai Fong ➡️ The Peak Tram Lower Terminus (no need to take the entire journey) ➡️ Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall ➡️ Man Mo Temple ➡️ Upper Lascar Row (Antique Street) ➡️ PMQ (designer shops) ➡️ Duddell Street (take the tram) ➡️ Kennedy Town (watch the sunset) ➡️ Take the tram back to Central ➡️ Take the subway to Tsim Sha Tsui ➡️ Walk back to West Kowloon High-speed Railway Station (Harbour City for shopping along the way) ➡️ Return to Shenzhen.
This route has been personally tested, avoiding some popular attractions and not retracing any steps throughout the journey. It takes a full day, but can be shortened as needed. It is suitable for friends who are not visiting Hong Kong for the first time and enjoy photography.
