Best Things to DoNo.11 of Best Things to Do in Montreal
On the north side of Place Jacques Cadia in Old Montreal is the City Hall of Montreal. The building was built in 1878. The original building was designed by Henri-MauricePerrault and Alexander CowperHutchison, using the popular "French Second Empire style" at that time, which was actually developed from the 17th century Renaissance style. It is an eclectic mix of Baroque and French architectural elements, also known as Baroque Revival architecture. In 1922, most of the original building was destroyed by fire. The architect Louis Parant was ordered to rebuild it. The reconstructed building structure adopted the advanced steel structure design at that time. In order to ensure the original style, it was modeled after the French Tour City Hall. The design added the mainstream neo-decorist style at that time, and also modified the original slate roofing material and used a copper roof instead. Due to the imprint of the historical development of the building, the building was selected into the list of iconic historic buildings in Canada in 1984.
