#Mufu Palace Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
The Best View of Lijiang Old Town
Head over the Mufu Palace for the best view of Lijiang Old Town!
There are plenty of paid viewpoints in the old town, most of which need to be paid for with an entrance ticket or by purchasing food. If you're going to spend money on the view, spend it on an entrance ticket to Mufu Palace where you get a panoramic view of the town and you can explore the historic buildings and garden for the same price.
After reading that this location was overrated I was happily surprised by how beautiful it is inside. Highly recommend 👌

One must visit Lijiang at least once in a lifetime—specifically, the Dayan Ancient Town
Dayan Ancient Town is rich in cultural heritage, with a plethora of historical buildings and traditional folk customs. The Mu Mansion is a must-visit, where you can listen to a Naxi guide explain in detail the history and layout of the Mu Mansion, as well as the traditional culture of the Naxi people. Dayan Ancient Town is also the liveliest among the ancient towns in Lijiang. As night falls, Bar Street, Sifang Street, and July First Street are probably the busiest and most crowded places in Dayan Ancient Town. Additionally, tasting the local cuisine is essential; you can try Yunnan's unique mushrooms and Naxi traditional delicacies such as chicken bean jelly, sour fish, and so on.
Trip to Lijiang
The beauty of Lijiang is indeed as famous as it is said to be!
In Lijiang, I chose the Wyndham Grand Hotel in Jinlin. Located in the suburban Laihe Ancient Town, the environment is tranquil, with connected villas and independent courtyards. You can directly enjoy the magnificent view of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Shuhe Ancient Town, Baisha Ancient Town, and Lijiang Ancient City are must-visit places, each with its own characteristics. Transportation is convenient, with vehicles available both online and offline. Shuhe Ancient Town is closer to downtown Lijiang, with taxi fares around 40 yuan. Baisha Ancient Town is a bit further, with taxi fares around 80 yuan.
Lijiang Ancient City feels different during the day and at night. The daytime is more suitable for strolling and photography. I highly recommend visiting the Mu Family Mansion. The Mu Family Mansion in Lijiang, also known as the Mu's Tusi Mansion, was the residence of the Naxi ethnic Mu family Tusi in Yunnan. The Mu surname was bestowed by Zhu Yuanzhang in the Ming Dynasty. Since the Mu family became hereditary Tusi (local chieftains) of Lijiang, they have gone through the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties for 22 generations, managing for over 470 years, and were the core of Lijiang Ancient City. There is a saying, 'The Forbidden City in the north, the Mu Family Mansion in the south.' The architecture of the Mu Family Mansion incorporates features of Han, Tibetan, Naxi, and other ethnic groups, with an ancient charm and unique style. In the Mu Family Mansion, there are exotic flowers and plants everywhere, especially the pigeon tree that houses giant pandas within its branches and the 600-year-old towering ancient cypress.
At night, Lijiang is brilliantly lit with neon lights, offering a different style. Every spot is suitable for photography. I suggest climbing to the Wangu Pavilion on Lion Hill at night. The Wangu Pavilion in Lijiang is located at a commanding height on Lion Hill in Lijiang Ancient City and is also the backyard of the Mu Family Mansion. The Wangu Pavilion is part of the Mu Family Mansion, the estate of the Mu family Tusi. The Wangu Pavilion, illuminated by night lights, is dazzlingly beautiful, like a fairyland.
For Lijiang cuisine, I recommend trying the Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles and black goat meat, which are truly exceptional in flavor!

Mu Mansion - the Naxi Mu family's Tusi Yamen
Magnificent and splendid
There is a saying that 'the Forbidden City is in the north, and the Mu Mansion is in the south'
As soon as you enter, there is a tour guide to explain, giving you an in-depth understanding of the history of the Naxi people and Lijiang. Only by climbing up to the last building - the Hall of the Three Purities, and looking down at the Mu Mansion, can you truly feel the grandeur that Xu Xiake described as 'the beauty of the palaces, comparable to that of a king's residence'
Those who like history should definitely come.
Chronicles of Mu Mansion (Yunnan Sketches 4)
Within the ancient city of Lijiang in Yunnan, there lies an ancient and magnificent place called Mu Mansion, officially known as the 'Lijiang Mu Family Tusi Yamen'. The entire Mu Mansion covers an area of 46 acres, with a central axis stretching 369 meters, and the architectural complex faces east from the west.
Mu Mansion reached its zenith at the end of the Ming Dynasty, with its architecture grand and majestic on a massive scale. The famous ancient traveler Xu Xiake once exclaimed: 'The splendor of its palaces and chambers rivals that of the royal family.' The saying passed down among the people of Lijiang, 'The Forbidden City in the north, Mu Mansion in the south,' reflects its renown.
The Mu family Tusi, as leaders of the Naxi people, originally did not have a surname but used a father-son joint naming system, where the last one or two characters of the father's name became the first one or two characters of the children's names. The 'Mu' surname is actually a Han Chinese surname. In 1382 AD, the then Naxi Tusi of Lijiang, Ajia Ade, submitted to the might of Zhu Yuanzhang of the Ming Dynasty and was thus favored by the Ming founder, who bestowed upon him the 'Mu' surname. This 'Mu' surname lasted through the Ming and Qing dynasties for over 470 years, spanning 22 generations.
It is said that because of this character 'Mu', the ancient city of Lijiang never built city walls, for 'Mu' with a frame around it becomes 'trapped', which was a great taboo for the Mu family Tusi. In the history of Yunnan's Tusi, the Lijiang Mu family was the earliest to embrace Han culture. History records: 'Among all the Tusi of Yunnan, those who knew poetry and books, and valued rites and righteousness, the Mu family of Lijiang was the foremost.' Mu Mansion was also the political and cultural center of the ancient city of Lijiang in the past. Hence, the ancient city of Lijiang has been able to prosper to this day.
Lijiang Travel Guide
Picturesque Lijiang
Stepping into the ancient city is like stepping into a painting. Traditional Naxi houses are built along the mountains and rivers, with old streets intertwined towards different ends. Walking by the flowing water and lingering by the small bridges truly embodies the saying 'people are touring in the painting'.

You gotta go to Yunnan! (Lijiang & Dali)
This was by far my favourite summer destination in China. You'll probably be recommended to see Yunnan many times whilst in China. I also urge you to do the trip. I took a ten day tour around Yunnan, first visiting Kunming, Lijiang, Dali and finally Shangri-la. This post is focused on Lijiang and Dali.
The cobbled streets will make you feel like you are in Europe, with flowers in every Window sill and by every stream. It's clear how much pride and care the locals show for their town.
There are so many things to see, do and try here. Embrace being a tourist and try it all if you can. In Lijiang there are tea making workshops in the village, where they will teach you how to make sweet, spicy and butter tea. You can also visit a tie-dye workshop and design your own clothing and take it home for about ¥200. Both Dali and Lijiang love tie-dye. You will find a shop on every corner selling tie-dye clothing and accessories. There is so much to do! Download some handy apps to help you get around such as Didi and Amaps to be your guide with taxis and buses. And don't leave Yunnan without trying their famous Yunnan cheese!
Things to do in Dali:
Cangshan Mountain, Qingbi Stream, Jade cloud road, Gantong Temple
Three pagodas and Chongsheng temple
Dali old town
Xizhou old town
Bai Tea tasting
Zhoucheng old town (tie-dye workshop)
Things to do in Lijiang:
Lijiang ancient town (Days ancient town)
Mufu Palace
Sifang street Square
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
Former residence of Joseph Rock
Baisha village
Shuhe ancient town
Dongba culture museum
Blue moon valley
I recommend China Discovery Tours for a stress free, fully included trip.

Mufu, as its name suggests, is the residence of Lijiang Mu's toast in the past. It combines the architectural style of the Central Plains in the Ming Dynasty with the crafts of the Bai and Naxi nationalities, fully reflecting the elegance of the Central Plains architecture in the Ming Dynasty, while retaining the simplicity and simplicity of the Central Plains architecture in the Tang and Song Dynasties. The rhyme of the wind, while sitting west to the east, the interior of the Yugou, the layout of the living water, and the spirit of the traditional culture of the Naxi people, even Xu Xiake who viewed the world, praised: "The beauty of the palace, In the case of the king."
In fact, the Naxi people did not have the Han family name. After Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, he was far away from the Lijiang Naxi Tusi Ajia Ade in the northwest of Yunnan Province, and the rate was from the returning to the court. Therefore, Zhu Yuanzhang was greatly appreciated, and his surname was removed and he was given a "wood" surname. From then on, the traditional father and son of Naxi was changed to the Chinese name.
Mu's toast in order to maintain the noble name of its ruling group, in the various sectors of society to promote the "official name of the wood, the people's surname and the system", and Mu's toast is passed on from generation to generation, the father and son pass on, through the Yuan and Ming The Three Dynasties and the Qing Dynasty, spanning 470 years of the 22nd century, the wooden house covers more than 100 acres in the heyday, and there are nearly 100 buildings, which is the heart of the ancient city of Lijiang.
The whole Mufu shade is in the embrace of the Lion Rock. It is in the head of the whole ancient city. The west river is surrounded by the southeast and west sides of the river. The ancient city streets and the folk houses are built by the river and built according to the canals. The drainage water is connected with the official residence and the folk house. The fan-shaped pattern of the wooden house surrounded by the residential buildings is a harmonious atmosphere of the officials and the people.
The wooden house under the Lion Rock in the ancient city of Lijiang can overlook the entire Mufu architectural garden and the ancient city of Dayan. Lijiang Mufu is the palace of Lijiang Mu's toast in Lijiang, which is equivalent to the "Forbidden City" of Lijiang.
You can reserve a half-day time to visit Mufu. It is still quite big. You can take the water with you. You can drink in the free reading area of the Royal Garden. When you are tired, remember to sit down and drink a glass of water. The photo was taken on the Lion Rock after the summit. It is very tired but the landscape is very good. Don't forget to climb!

There is the Forbidden City in the north and the Mufu in the south. Mufu is a splendid architectural art garden, which fully reflects the elegance of the Central Plains architecture in the Ming Dynasty, while retaining the quaint and rough flowing charm of the Central Plains in the Tang and Song Dynasties. Towards the east, the layout of the Yugou in the Fuzhou, the layout of the long flowing stream, also sees the spirit of the Naxi traditional culture.
Mufu was completed in 1999. It is still far away from now. When you walk in, you will find that every place is very magnificent, and the colors are gorgeous, and there are still obvious differences with the monuments. However, the momentum is still very shocking. The
mufu building group sits west to the east, and "the atmosphere is welcoming the sun." The four-character book "Tianyu Liufang" on the wooden archway is the homonym of the "Reading to Go" in the Naxi language, the very intelligent Naxi people.
Mufu Palace-style buildings, consisting of Zhongyi Shipaifang, Yimeng Hall, Wanjulou, Hufa Hall, Guangbi Building, Yuyin Building, Sanqing Hall; each side has a hall, a loft, a street building, a home, There are 162 houses in the official residence and the promenade.
Stepping in from the main entrance, you can see the Chamber of Deputies, the wide council, the place where the toast meets, and the very imposing buildings.
is the study and library building of Mufu, each with different branches. The
Guardian Temple is also known as the Post-Consulate Hall. It is the hall of the Tusi House, the back door of the Guangbi Building, and the Yuyin Building is the place where the sacred ceremonies and songs and dances are held. The Sanqing Hall is the spirit of Taoism. local.
When you want to go here, you still need a little physical strength. In the end, you can climb to the top of the Lion Rock and take a panoramic view of the Mufu. However, people who have high anti-go can still get a little asthma.
When Mu's toast built his own palace-style wooden house, he was seated in the theory of the Central Plains Feng Shui, which was not as far as "sitting north and facing south", but toward the sun and the east. The oriental genus, the sun and the wood are the cults in the teachings of Naxi Dongba, and the surnames of the Naxi people given by the emperor. Therefore, the idea of wanting to get the "wood" gas makes the building of Mufu take the direction of sitting west to the east.
Later, I heard another one: She said that there is another reason why Mufu chose to sit in the east and west. When the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang built Nanjing, and Nanjing was in the east of Lijiang. So, because of respect, he chose Towards the east.
On the way to the back garden, I met several boys who were about the same age as me, and heard one of them say that [every time I came to Mufu, I was half dead]
I heard that I had to I want to see the whole picture of the ancient city of Lijiang, and I want to see the Yulong Snow Mountain. In this way, the stairs that should be taken are still quite high. Since they are coming, let's go.
When you arrive at the ancient city of Lijiang, there is a place to visit, that is, Mufu. Mufu has been the center of Lijiang since ancient times. In the past, it was the place where Lijiang Mu's toast worked and lived. This mansion once ruled Lijiang for 470 years.
Mufu is located in the south of the ancient city center. It cannot be visited free of charge due to the maintenance fee of the ancient city. Tickets must be purchased separately and tickets are 60 yuan. There is the Forbidden City in the north and the Mufu in the south. The Mufu is compared with the Forbidden City and the importance of this residence is discussed. If you havent visited Mufu, you have never been to Lijiang.
This makes sense. Just entering the gate of Mufu, it is a wide square, and the architectural pattern is like the Forbidden City with a small one.
Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, far away from the Lijiang Naxi Tusi Ajia Ade in the northwest of Yunnan Province. In 1382, the rate was returned from the return, and the ceremony was rewarded by Zhu Yuanzhang. "The surname, Mu's became the ruler of Lijiang's hereditary.
Five or six hundred years ago, Mufu was the "Forbidden City" of Lijiang. The Mushi Tusi family went through three dynasties: Yuan, Ming and Qing. In the heyday, Mufu occupied more than 100 acres.
The middle is the office area, which is splendid and majestic. There are the halls of the Chamber of the People, the Wanjuan Building and the Dafa Hall on the central axis. The houses on both sides are listed, and the pavilions are numerous. The garden corridor has a unique style. Its overall architectural style is "built in the same way as the Forbidden City."
Mufu is a common name for the Lijiang Mushi Tusi Gate. It is located under the Lion Rock in the ancient city of Lijiang. It is the Grand View Garden of the ancient city culture of Lijiang.
When I watched a TV series called "Mufu Fengyun", I realized that there is such a powerful building in the ancient city of Lijiang.
The entire Mufu complex sits west to east and is a splendid architectural art garden.
Lijiang Tourism has a saying: "Not in Mufu, it is equal to Lijiang."
