The Potala Palace in Tibet
Different views of the Potala Palace throughout the four seasons, the Potala Palace, located in Lhasa, Tibet, is a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism and a World Cultural Heritage. Its mystique comes from the uniqueness of its location and architecture, religious beliefs and legends, the mysterious power of the treasures within, the complex labyrinth layout, the history of monks' cultivation, and the unsolved historical mysteries. As one of the mysterious buildings, the Potala Palace displays a profound cultural and historical heritage.
Beautiful Lhasa
Lhasa is the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and the largest city in Tibet. It is located in the middle of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, with an altitude of about 3650 meters, and is one of the highest cities in the world.
As the political, economic and cultural center of Tibet, Lhasa has a rich historical and cultural heritage. Potala Palace - Tibet Autonomous Region
Getting there - Book with a tour group to get to Tibet. We used JoyTravel in China and they were wonderful. :)
Take a moment to stop and catch your breath, the Potala Palace sits at an elevation of 3700 meters about 12,100 feet. We spent time hiking up and through each room. The many rooms of the palace were exquisite and it was such a treat to learn about the history of each location. Photography is not permitted inside, however, this made the experience seem even more special and we were able to take in the sights without any distractions.

POTALA PALACE
The Potala Palace is a building that is considered a landmark and symbol of Tibet. This building is a large palace consisting of many houses, towers, chapels, and so on. The Potala Palace is the tallest palace in the world and is known for its spectacular architectural style, so it is revered as one of the most beautiful architectural buildings in the world The Potala Palace is located in Lhasa, Tibet, once an imperial palace, seat of government, and monastery, now it is one of the must-visit tourist destinations for Tibetan tourists. This building also stores a variety of interesting historical facts to discuss. This is a collection of interesting facts about the Potala Palace, compiled from the China Highlights and Listerious pages. The Potala Palace is built 117 meters above the mountain, with impressive zigzag steps. When you walk around the buildings of Lhasa city, you will not find any buildings taller than the top of the Potala Palace. To preserve the unique atmosphere around the palace as well, a ban has been imposed on building buildings over 21 meters high. This is a sign of respect for the sacred site. Therefore, you will not see skyscrapers towering above the palace. Construction of the palace began in 1645 by order of the 5th Dalai Lama. The 5th Dalai Lama named Lozang Gyatso, this Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader decided to build the palace because of its unique location. The location is also considered perfect for use as a government center, because of its location right between the Drepung monastery, Sera, and the city of Lhasa. Inside the Potala Palace building is the stupa of the 5th Dalai Lama with a height of 14.85 meters, which is overlaid with 3,721 kg of gold, and gems adorn the stupa, such as pearls, coral, amber, and agate. The 5th Dalai Lama's Stupa is the most luxurious and most valuable stupa.

Tibet. Lhasa Potala Palace
came to Tibet more than a dozen times, have not taken a Tibetan photo.
This time in Lhasa is quite abundant. I found a group of Tibetan travel photography studios at the entrance of the Potala Palace.
Although I am also a photographer myself, my Canon 5D4 is also professional enough. I can take a self-portrait or let passers-by help to follow the SLR and record the wonderful moments on the trip. However, in the 599 yuan, you can choose your favorite local costumes. You can choose to take the exterior of the Potala Palace or the exterior of the Jokhang Temple in Barkhor Street. There are professional makeup artists to make the overall shape, using the first-line brand. Cosmetics, as well as a very professional and dedicated photographer, the little brother to guide the camera action, and the later retouching is also very efficient. The price is really high!
Heed the advice, the early morning in Lhasa is truly worth waking up early for!!
Indeed, 'the early bird catches the worm,' this saying is no lie.
If you don't wake up early, you may never know how beautiful the morning in Lhasa can be!
The sky changes from deep blue to light blue, then starts to turn red, until the final Tibetan blue. It's truly magnificent!
Strongly recommend, wake up early, go out, and see how beautiful Lhasa's spring is!
Recommended photography spots:
📍Yingqin Bridge 📍Lugu Alley 📍Barkhor Shopping Mall Skybridge 📍Cijuelin
📍Hilton Garden Inn Rooftop
⚠️Of course, if you just want to take pictures of the Potala Palace, and your hotel rooftop has a viewing platform, you don't need to wake up early, you can just go up to the rooftop to capture the Potala Palace in the morning. But if you want to take pictures of the streets, or the Lhasa River, then there's no way around it, you can only wake up early and go out.
Photography time recommendation:
It's getting light before seven these days in Lhasa, so it's suggested to arrive at your desired photography spot around seven, and then wait for the sunlight to slowly come up.
㊙️Precautions:
1️⃣Cijuelin, Yingqin Bridge, so early, there may not be public transport, it's recommended to drive yourself, or ride a shared electric scooter
2️⃣Although Lhasa has warmed up a lot now, it is still a bit cold before the sun comes out, so down jackets are still necessary, don't catch a cold
3️⃣Many places still require the use of a telephoto lens
Exploring Tibet: A Journey of the Soul, Meeting the Self
🏔️"Suddenly, I want to go to Tibet"🌈
This is the summit of thousands of mountains, the source of myriad rivers, this is Tibet, the mysterious land atop the roof of the world. The mountains are captivating, the great lakes deeply tranquil, amidst the clouds, rain, frost, and the mortal world, here lies a memory code that shakes the soul.
🛣️Why is Tibet so enchanting?
The streets of Lhasa are bathed in sunlight, red walls and golden roofs whisper secrets of a millennium. Prayer wheels spin, Sanskrit chants resonate, the power of faith is a miracle that transcends time and space.
🏞️【Why go to Tibet? This is the answer】
A day in Lhasa is to see all beings and oneself. Potala Palace is endlessly fascinating, it is an eternal dream, a legend of thousands of years. Jokhang Temple is never enough, it is a realm of transience, a faith of thousands of years. Barkhor Street is endlessly charming, it is an old street, a piece of ancient affection, a legacy of love.
🚶♂️【In Nyingchi, take a good walk with oneself】
On the third day of the trip, we walk alongside the Nyang River. Taking a transfer vehicle, we pass through the primeval forest to reach the remote Sangtung pasture. Then, embark on a 6-8 kilometer experiential hike. Walking past streams reflecting snow-capped peaks, over mountain paths with fallen dry trees, deep into the forest to the glaciers, and finally arriving at the tranquil shores of Nyingchi Lake.
🏨【Stay in an oxygen bar, breathe with nature】
Awaken in the oxygen bar in the early morning. While there are fewer visitors, stroll onto the heart of the lake's island. The island, like a gem set in the emerald lake, leisurely wander in the over 600-year-old Tsodzong Gompa, quietly admiring the lake's hues.
🏞️【Enter Sosong Village, encounter another perspective of the great canyon】
Sosong Village, beneath is the ever-flowing Yarlung Tsangpo, looking up at Namcha Barwa, the village is dotted with century-old wild ancient trees. Admire the grandeur of the canyon from another perspective, with a view of Namcha Barwa peak right outside the window of the residence.
🌄【After Namcha Barwa, there is no sunset to look back on】
Approaching Namcha Barwa, one of the world's most beautiful peaks, we first take a scenic shuttle to tour the canyon area, delving deep under the mountains and snow peaks, feeling the shock of the world's most charming canyon.
🏰【Whoever sees Samye Monastery, can avoid the gates of evil realms】
Samye Monastery, this sacred land, every brick and tile is imbued with ancient wisdom, every ray of sunlight is filled with holy blessings. I step into that solemn hall, feeling the universal illumination of Buddha's light.
🌿【Every step, a trace of the soul】
If the Zen sounds of a simple practice ground are the mountain springs, then the Buddha's words here are the pervasive sunlight: warm, bright, cleansing the soul.
💧【The blue Yamdrok Lake, with a spirited heart】
What exactly does Yamdrok Lake resemble, like a dream. This dream traverses the peaks of snow mountains, under the blue sky, beside the grasslands, it reflects myriad scenes, it tells endless stories.
🌾【To obtain a fragrance, is to touch all things in the world】
Handmade Tibetan incense production is a dance of the soul, a soaring of thoughts. When our fingers gently touch the spices, it's as if we've touched the soul of nature.
Everyone has their own "holy land." It might be a starry sky, a grassland, or perhaps expectations hidden in the heart. Some say, one day, the holy land will be Tibet.
Tibet, a place where oxygen is scarce but faith is not
Tourists can't blend in but will be deeply moved.
The Potala Palace really has a magical charm, it is beautiful, beautifully rhythmic. Many people say it is beautiful, but how it is beautiful is indescribable. Its beauty is beyond words, you stand in front of it, gaze at it, and you will find your heart truly at peace.

🔹It's best not to visit the Potala Palace on your first day in Lhasa, as it involves climbing 100 meters at an altitude of 3650 meters. Even those without altitude sickness will find it tiring. Prepare oxygen and water;

🔹Dress code: Do not wear skirts, and showing ankles is also not allowed. Wear conservative clothing;
🔹Photography is not allowed inside the palace;
🔹Prepare some change for offering to the Buddha statues inside. There is a 1:1 change service inside, cash only. Do not exchange money at the main entrance;
🔹Some paths inside the palace are narrow and steep, be careful with your footing;
🔹After visiting the Potala Palace, you can go to the Yaowang Mountain Viewing Platform across the street to check in. 50 RMB allows you to take photos together, open from 7:00 to 19:00.

Potala Palace
#chinatrip One of my Life Goals !!!
I finally have a chance to visit this Historical Palace in Tibet.
Firstly, the China Government requires all Foreigners to be accompanied by a Registered Local Tour Guide. A Special Visit Tibet Pass must be applied before any Foreigner can visit into Tibet.
This historical Palace was once the Official Office and Monastery of His Holiness, The Dalai Lama.
Currently, this Palace is used by the Chinese Government as the Administrative Office of Tibet.
The red-coloured portions are the original palace buildings, and the white-coloured portions were added to serve the administration offices.
There are around 1,000 steps to climb up to the palace main entrance ... with another 1,000 steps to climb down.
With the already thin oxygenated air and drier humidity, I will suggest visitors to take the climb, slow and easy.
The steps are rather steep, and uneven.
In the past, these steps were specially inclined to make any attacking infrantry from easily running or climbing up to attack the Palace.
No photography is allowed inside the Palace, thus, we can only post photos of the Palace exterior.
I will strongly suggest everyone to try to visit this Beautiful Historical Palace !!!
The Potala Palace in My Heart | The Eternal Center Stage
| The Eternal Center Stage.
🌟🌟🌟 The Potala Palace is so dazzling that it feels like everyone knows about it without needing an introduction, but in reality, most people are not familiar with the detailed history and religious status of the Potala Palace. The Potala Palace is a fortress-like architectural complex, built by Songtsen Gampo of the Tubo dynasty to welcome Princess Wencheng and Princess Bhrikuti. Another theory suggests it was constructed as the royal palace when Songtsen Gampo moved the capital to Lhasa. After being rebuilt in the 17th century, it became the winter residence of successive Dalai Lamas.
🌟🌟🌟 The main structures of the Potala Palace consist of the White Palace and the Red Palace, with the red color of the outer walls being natural pigments, very bright and vivid. The Tibetan style of the palace is particularly attractive. Built on the side of a mountain, the extensive stone walls stand as if they were cliffs, making the architecture seem to merge with the hillside, majestic in appearance. The Potala Palace is situated at an altitude of 3,700 meters and covers a total area of 360,000 square meters. The palace walls are built with rammed earth and covered with bricks and stones, making them particularly sturdy and able to withstand various natural disasters such as typhoons and earthquakes.
🌟🌟🌟 I hired a guide to explain the changes in the regime of the Potala Palace. As the political center of Tibet, the Potala Palace's status is truly the center stage debut. The guide said that what ordinary people consider the most precious, gold, is the least valuable in the Potala Palace. The golden roofs, golden statues, everything is made of gold. The treasures of the Potala Palace are also a major attraction, with the largest diamond in the country, the most valuable jewels, all enshrined in the Potala Palace, including Dzi beads, agate, turquoise, jadeite, jade, and so on.
Here comes the 11-day, 10-night Tibet travel guide for an average cost of 2500 per person
Here comes the 11-day, 10-night Tibet travel guide for an average cost of 2500 per person||
1️⃣Accommodation - Muyang Chenge Youth Hostel (Jokhang Temple branch) 25💰 per bed
I'm not an advertiser, dear friends
2️⃣Dining - I mostly ordered takeout and didn't check in at any popular restaurants. You must try the fried potatoes in Tibet, they are really delicious
3️⃣Itinerary
📌Yamdrok Lake (90💰) includes meal
📌Sera Monastery entrance fee 50💰, after 5 pm 10💰
Debates start at 3 pm, there are no debates after 5 pm so it's cheaper
📌Tashilhunpo Monastery is especially efficacious for wealth-seeking on Wednesdays
📌Nanshan Park is free, the scenery is beautiful
📌Hanging prayer flags on Nakin Mountain 230💰, 200 meters is enough
📌Tibetan costume photo shoot 158💰 (includes 3 hours of costume rental) You rent the costume and take your own photos. The costume seems to be 100 and makeup 58, you can ask around, I forgot
The address is: Tibet Cultural Physical Examination Space
4️⃣Essential items
Indigestion medicine, cold medicine, painkillers, glucose
Ibuprofen granules (good for high altitude headache)
Hat, sunscreen, sun protection gloves, motion sickness medicine if you get car sick
📌Tibet is really a magical place. On this trip, I met many interesting friends who added a lot of fun to my journey. Although the 53-hour hard seat train journey was long, I met friends from all over the world. We shared food and took care of each other. I met a super nice girl from Guangzhou in the hostel, and on the way back, I met travel companions to play with. The trip to Tibet has ended. There are regrets, but the imperfections make the journey beautiful.
📌The places you want to go to at 20, don't wait until you're 30. Because the feelings at 20 are different from those at 30. I hope we can all catch the tail of youth and enjoy life in time
✋(My advice) Tibet is a slow-paced city, don't rush your itinerary.
In Lhasa, watch the Potala Palace, daydream, drink sweet tea, turn the prayer wheel, and spend a leisurely day experiencing the city's life, culture, and beliefs.
📌Warning: Remember not to join a tour group in advance. If you sign up for a tour before even arriving in Tibet and then suffer from altitude sickness, you'll be rushing your itinerary and that's just paying to suffer.

Potala Palace (I) Circumambulation at the Potala Palace
Coming to Lhasa, you must visit the Potala Palace (hereinafter referred to as the Potala Palace). The fame of this palace is too great, the pearl of the snow-capped plateau, an important symbol of Lhasa city.
Under the Red Mountain where the Potala Palace is located, there is a famous circumambulation path, called \"Zikuo\" in Tibetan, which circles around the Potala Palace. Numerous believers and devotees, on this approximately two-kilometer-long circumambulation path, keep circumambulating, expressing their reverence for the Buddha and praying for blessings.
Zikuo, along with Nangkuo, Bakuo, and Linkuo, are the main circumambulation paths in Lhasa city, but Zikuo holds a very high status in the hearts of the Tibetan people and is almost universally known.
Circumambulation is a practice of Tibetan Buddhism. Practice requires physical action, long journeys, enduring hardships, and ultimately achieving spiritual sublimation. The usual method of circumambulation is clockwise. The circumambulator holds a rosary in his left hand, rotates the prayer wheel in his right hand, silently recites sutras, and circles around the Buddha hall or Buddha statue an odd number of times.
Following the long procession, the right hand lightly touches the shiny yellow prayer wheel. Over the centuries, how many devout believers have come to this circumambulation path, and despite the changes of time, the wish for a better life has never changed.
For me, the trip to Tibet is itself a journey of spiritual cultivation. In the modern society filled with information from high-rise buildings all day long, how difficult is it to find a place of tranquility in your heart?
Coming to Tibet, I saw many simple believers. They circumambulate and prostrate themselves. I saw another kind of pursuit, life can be barren, but the spirit must be rich. Their eyes are clear and clean, and what their expressions reveal is a solid satisfaction.

What can you see at the 'Palace in the Sky', the Potala Palace~
Lhasa, my dream city, is the roof of the world, where purity and devotion abound, and the power of faith is infinite. It's a place I've wanted to visit since my university days, and finally, ten years later, I've set foot here. The Potala Palace is a landmark of Lhasa, which I always saw on TV, but you can only truly feel its purity and magnificence when you actually walk inside.
📍📍What's at the Potala Palace: The Potala Palace was originally built during the reign of Songtsen Gampo of the Tubo Dynasty, but it was mostly destroyed by war, and now only the Phakpa Lhakhang, the oldest structure, remains. The current Potala Palace was started by the Fifth Dalai Lama and expanded by successive Dalai Lamas to its present twelve-story scale. The main structures of the Potala Palace are the following three parts.
🌈🌈Snow City: The buildings at the foot of the mountain, which were the residences and offices of officials of the former Tibetan local government, the Kashag. The walls are snow-white, and it is said that they contain milk ingredients.
🌈🌈White Palace: The winter residence of the successive Dalai Lamas, as well as their office for handling affairs of state, with a total of seven floors, it is also the core area of the Potala Palace.
🌈🌈Red Palace: Mainly consists of the eight stupas of the Fifth to the Thirteenth Dalai Lamas and various Buddhist halls. Here is also enshrined a portrait of Emperor Qianlong, and in the center of the main hall are statues of Songtsen Gampo, Princess Wencheng, and Princess Chizun.
📍📍Potala Palace Visiting Tips:
1⃣The off-season ticket price for the Potala Palace is 100 (October to April of the following year), and the peak season ticket price is 200 (May to October). For ticket reservations, it is recommended to join a tour group for explanations and reservations. Otherwise, in the off-season, you can reserve one or two days in advance, and in the peak season, you should reserve at least ten days in advance. It is said that the best time to grab tickets is between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m., and everyone must go through security one hour before the reservation time.
2⃣When going to Tibet, make sure to bring your ID card. After entering the Potala Palace Square, your ID card will be checked three times. Also, pay attention to your attire; do not wear short skirts, remove hats when entering the Buddhist halls, and do not wear sunglasses.
3⃣The general visiting time for the Potala Palace is three hours. If you encounter meal times, make sure to bring some food with you. There is a Potala Palace Cafe at the foot of the mountain where you can buy some food and drinks.
📍📍How to Photograph the Potala Palace
🍭Potala Palace Square: Right in front of the Potala Palace, the best place to capture the reflection of the palace, especially when there is a reflection on a clear day, and it is also beautiful at night.
🍭Nanshan Park: One spot is next to the small lake in Nanshan Park, and another is at the viewing platform.
🍭Yaowang Mountain: The fifty yuan RMB note viewpoint, be sure to bring a fifty yuan note for a photo check-in.
🍭Xingyue Bodhi Cafe: An internet-famous cafe, their viewing platform is also a good spot for photography, but you need to make a purchase at the cafe.
There are other good photography spots, but these are the ones I have visited.
In short, the Potala Palace, the place closest to the sky, makes you feel especially pure in your heart. If you have the chance, you must visit at least once.
Potala Palace (Part II) Prayers at the Potala Palace
The Potala Palace stands majestically on Marpo Ri hill in Lhasa city, built along the mountain's contour, exuding an extremely imposing presence. This place served as the center for the living quarters and the unified administration of religion and politics of successive Tibetan rulers.
Before dawn, the crowd waiting to visit the Potala Palace had already formed a long queue, and after an approximate 4-hour wait, they finally entered the palace to witness its splendor.
The Potala Palace, with its lower white buildings known as the White Palace and the upper red buildings as the Red Palace. The eastern side of the White Palace was the ruler's bedroom, and the western side housed the monks' quarters. Inside the Red Palace are the stupas and temples of successive generations.
Ascending from the lower corridor of the Potala in a circular path, one first arrives at the White Palace. Known as the Winter Palace, daily life and political activities took place here. The topmost level of the White Palace is where the bedroom is located, bathed in ample sunlight and also home to many rare and exotic treasures.
The Red Palace has a stronger religious atmosphere, mainly dealing with various religious affairs. In the center of the Red Palace is the Dalai Lama's hall, enshrining statues of Songtsen Gampo, Princess Wencheng, and others. The earliest rulers of the Tibetan Tubo period, representing supreme authority, thus occupy the central position in the entire Potala.
Throughout the Potala Palace, there are Buddha statues, murals, wood and stone carvings, all exquisitely crafted, and plaques written by emperors of the Qing dynasty, showing the great importance placed on Tibet. Being inside feels like entering a palace of art, with Tibetan butter lamps not only serving as lighting but also expressing infinite reverence for the Buddha.
The Potala Palace is the ultimate destination for countless Tibetan pilgrims, epitomizing the completion of their spiritual practice. A brief journey cannot grasp the true essence of Tibetan Buddhism. In Lhasa, the soul is shaken day after day, unable to calm for a long time. Lovely smiles, clear eyes. Even in the face of a hard life, their hearts are full of happiness, a wealth beyond compare.

🩺 'About Altitude Sickness'
.Altitude sickness is actually quite mysterious, be sure to pay attention to your rest before going to Tibet, rest well, and ensure good sleep
.When staying in a hotel in Tibet, if conditions allow, prefer hotels with free oxygen supply;
.Altitude sickness is generally divided into several levels:
Level 1: Slight pain in the temples, similar to the headache when having a mild fever, breathing can be labored.
This is very normal, do not engage in strenuous exercise, it will be fine after adapting for a while;
Level 2: Unbearable headache, sleepless nights, breathing not smooth, lips and nail beds darken in color.
This is a slightly more serious altitude sickness, it is best to inhale oxygen in time;
Level 3: Symptoms of level 2, accompanied by vomiting/diarrhea, in this case, it is important to inhale oxygen in time and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
🆘 'Highland Essentials'
.Oximeter: Essential for the highlands, can monitor your body condition at any time;
.Lip balm: The highlands are very dry, keeping lips dry will be much more comfortable;
.Nasal moisturizing spray: Keeping the nose dry and moist can relieve the discomfort brought by altitude sickness;
.Ibuprofen: When you can't sleep due to mild altitude sickness, taking one is very effective;
Lhasa Bie Nuan Homestay, where you can lie down and view the Potala Palace
🔭I've found the perfect spot to photograph the Potala Palace!
-
🔭Because I anticipated getting altitude sickness before going to Lhasa, I knew I wouldn't be able to climb the Potala Palace, so I deliberately chose a homestay with great value for money, 178¥/night.
-
🔭The rooftop has a small bar and a double swing, where you can dine while watching the sunrise and sunset over the Potala Palace from the fourth-floor terrace. If you're afraid of the wind and the cold, there's a glass sunroom on the third floor. If you have a telephoto lens, the photos taken from this spot will be even more amazing~

Gala Village and Kasimu Village are the best viewing spots, where you can see the idyllic scenery, with peach blossoms reflecting off snow-capped mountains and lakes!
📸Want tips for photographing peach blossoms? Listen to my advice! For vast peach blossoms, use drones and wide-angle lenses for a super impressive effect! For detailed close-ups, use a macro lens to capture the beauty of the peach blossoms.
📸There are tricks to photographing people with peach blossoms! Blur the peach blossoms as the foreground, with a full-body or back view portrait as the midground, and a vast expanse of peach blossoms and snow-capped mountains as the background, for a stunningly beautiful peach blossom photo composition! You can also choose close-up portraits, such as a side glance towards the peach blossoms or a smile when the peach blossoms cover the eyes and lips, which will create an enchanting image.
⚠On the way to Nyingchi, remember to pay attention to a few details! First, during the Peach Blossom Festival, flights and hotels can get tight, and prices will rise significantly, so remember to plan and book in advance! Second, the climate in Nyingchi in March has a large diurnal temperature variation, with daytime temperatures between 10-15 degrees Celsius, so keep warm! Also, the ultraviolet rays are very strong, don't forget to bring sunglasses and a sun hat! Lastly, the altitude in Nyingchi is around 3000 meters, which is very suitable for those who are entering Tibet for the first time, as there won't be any obvious symptoms of altitude sickness.
