Sichuan Zigong | Witness the arduous development of the salt industry history
| Witness the arduous development of the salt industry history. In addition to enjoying the lantern festival and visiting Fantawild in Zigong, there is also a unique attraction. In the urban area of Zigong, there is an extremely niche museum that records the ancient development history of China's salt industry, which is also the only salt industry history museum in the country.
Salt held a very high status in ancient times, being not only a necessity for people's daily lives but also an important source of tax revenue, and was considered by the ancients as an important strategic material.
The Salt Industry Museum is located at the former Xiqin Guild Hall, displaying historical relics of Zigong's well salt history. The museum's exterior is very distinctive, especially the majestic wood carving above the entrance, which integrates architectural styles from the Ming and Qing dynasties, including local folk architectural elements.
The layout of the Zigong Salt Industry Museum is similar to a Siheyuan (courtyard house), with two-story buildings on both sides. Inside, the museum displays historical documents and records of the salt industry, tools for repairing and drilling salt wells, reflecting the technical craftsmanship of salt industry workers from past generations in salt making and drilling. In addition to the exhibits, I personally think that the museum's architecture itself is also worth seeing, with stone carvings, wood carvings, and colorful paintings that are all very delicate and exquisite. It is not common to see such well-preserved large-scale ancient buildings!
Not far from the museum, you can visit the Shenhai Well to see salt mining and production in action. This well is known as the world's first well over a kilometer deep and is still an active 'living fossil' of salt production.

Let's visit the Zigong Salt Industry History Museum together, you'll regret it if you don't come~
The Zigong Salt Industry History Museum is a professional museum of the history of science and technology in China, and it is also a national first-class museum, located in Ziliujing District of Zigong City, Sichuan Province, on the bank of Fuxi River at the foot of Longfeng Mountain.
The museum was established in 1959, and the site is the Xiqin Guild Hall built in the first year of the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty (1736). This is a guild hall built by Shaanxi salt merchants with collected funds, integrating the architectural styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties and folk buildings. Well-preserved steles, wood carvings, stone carvings, and clay sculptures are physical specimens for the study of social life, economic conditions, and religious art in the Qing Dynasty before the Opium War.
The Zigong Salt Industry Museum has a collection of 18,214 movable cultural relics, and the basic display includes the history of well salt technology in China, the geological display of the Zigong salt industry, and the history of salt tax in Zigong.
The museum has a total of 1,975 sets of cultural relics related to the development of well salt, including historical documents, literature, and archival materials. Among them, there are 426 sets of historical relics, 730 sets of salt history relics, and 819 sets of specimen fossils. A total of 431 sets have been identified as precious cultural relics, including 55 sets of first-class cultural relics.
The museum's collection of 503 pieces of traditional drilling and well repair tools is the only relatively complete group of ancient percussion drilling tools preserved in China. These tools of different periods, forms, and purposes reflect the well salt technology and craftsmanship created by generations of salt workers, marking the development of China's drilling technology. The museum's collection of well stove management contracts, rock mouth books, and account books from the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period are of value for the study of the history of science and technology and socio-economic history.

Continuing my travel notes in Zigong.
This small southwestern city is not very famous, indeed less known than Chengdu. But if you say it's famous, rabbit heads, lantern festivals, well salt, dinosaur fossils, each one is more popular than the last.
Today, let's talk about one of Zigong's specialties—well salt.
Historically, Zigong has drilled over 13,000 well salt mines, with the deepest reaching more than 1,000 meters underground, which is equivalent to drilling through Mount Everest more than 400 times.
To understand well salt, we must mention two destinations: one is Shenhai Well, and the other is the 'Zigong Salt Industry History Museum' we are visiting today.
Its predecessor, the Xiqin Guild Hall, was built by Shaanxi salt merchants during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Shaanxi + salt merchants can be said to be fully buffed, and you can imagine how 'extravagantly inhumane' it is here.
The salt industry history here is certainly present, but it's mainly about the displays, which are somewhat dull. Compared to the displays, the most worthwhile aspect to see here is actually the architecture.
The architectural style here blends the styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties, both royal and folk. In addition to its grand scale, the details are also very well-crafted. A large number of stone and wood carvings are exquisitely detailed, and the extensive gilding speaks to the cost-no-object construction, as well as the beautifully intricate caisson ceilings and complex flying eaves that you would only expect to see in Beijing. It can be said that whatever elements are luxurious and grand, they've been incorporated here. In all of China, aside from the emperor, perhaps only the fabulously wealthy salt merchants would dare to do this.
In 1959, Grandpa D personally designated this place as China's only salt industry history museum, allowing it to be perfectly preserved to this day.

Zigong, you'll regret it if you go!
We've been talking about the trip to Zigong for a long time, from last year's New Year to now, we regret it when we go, regretting why we didn't arrange it earlier, it's really fun and delicious!
We chose 3 attractions:
1. Zigong Dinosaur Museum, the largest dinosaur museum in the world, takes you back to the Jurassic period in a second!
Tickets: Adults - 40/person; Elderly people aged 60 (excluding) to 64 (including) - 20/person; Over 65 free
The venue is quite interesting, suitable for walking with children!
2. Shenhai Well, understand the process of ancient salt making.
Tickets: Adults - 25/person; Elderly people aged 65 (including) and above are free
Tip: The scenic area is not large, but I personally think this place is very interesting. If you are not in a hurry, you can do your homework in advance and tell the children well, it is also a study!
3. Salt Industry History Museum, understand history, feel the charm of the millennium salt capital.
Tickets: Adults - 35/person; Elderly people aged 65 (including) and above are free
Tip: For those who like to take pictures, this is definitely a good place to check in. The exterior of the museum is a Qing Dynasty ancient building. History and modernity are presented in one space. This point is already very attractive. When I went there, there were some beautiful little sisters taking pictures, just like a beautiful garden scroll.
Of course, in addition to the beauty of the building itself, you can also learn a lot of salt well tools here, some of which can be operated by yourself, and it is another good place to learn.

The three treasures of Zigong that dominate the culinary world: dinosaurs, salt wells, and lanterns
Zigong, known as 'the city established because of salt', is located in the southern part of the Sichuan Basin and is a dazzling pearl of the 'land of abundance'. Zigong is an important dinosaur fossil site in China and is known as the 'hometown of dinosaurs'. Zigong has three treasures: dinosaurs, salt wells, and lanterns, as well as delicious food. The rich tourism resources satisfy the eyes and taste buds of tourists.
Dinosaur Museum: The Dinosaur Museum is located in Dashanpu Town, Da'an District, Zigong City. It is a large-scale site museum built on the world-famous 'Dashanpu Dinosaur Fossil Group Site'. It is also the first specialized dinosaur museum in China.
The Zigong Dinosaur Museum is divided into three floors, with the main exhibits being the Dashanpu dinosaur fossil burial site and the excavated dinosaur fossils. The exhibition is divided into three parts: the first part focuses on basic knowledge related to dinosaurs, such as biological evolution, fossils, geological ages, dinosaur evolution and classification, etc.; the second part mainly introduces various types of dinosaur fossils from Dashanpu; the third part is the dinosaur burial site, where a large-scale excavation site is displayed to the public.
Shenhai Ancient Salt Well and Salt Industry History Museum: Shenhai Ancient Salt Well is located in Changyantang, Da'an District, Zigong City. It was dug in the third year of the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty (1823) and is the first well over a kilometer deep in China that was drilled using the 'impact drilling method'. It still retains the well frame and winch, and you can appreciate the ancient salt well style. Shenhai Ancient Salt Well is also the first well in the world that is over a kilometer deep.
The Salt Industry History Museum is located at No. 107 Jiefang East Road, Ziliujing District, Zigong City. It was built in 1959 and is one of the earliest salt industry museums established in the history of China's museum development. It is currently the only salt industry history museum in China. The main content of the museum is the collection, research, display, and protection of China's salt industry historical relics, mainly well salt. The museum is composed of two ancient buildings, one is the Xiqin Guild Hall and its affiliated buildings, which are national key cultural relics protection units; the other is the Wangye Temple, a cultural relics protection unit in Sichuan Province.
Lantern Park: The Lantern Park is located at No. 6 Gongyuan Road, Ziliujing District, Zigong City. It covers an area of 103,000 square meters, of which the water area is 7,500 square meters. It is a comprehensive cultural park that integrates gardens and amusement. The park has a famous Lantern Museum.
The Lantern Museum is currently the only professional museum in China about lantern culture. It is located in the Lantern Park in Zigong City. The building is themed on lanterns, and the shape is a combination of overlapping square geometric shapes. It is a group of large-scale palace lantern-shaped architectural art groups composed of cantilevered palace lantern-shaped corner windows and round and prismatic lantern windows embedded in the wall.
Ziliujing Old Street: Located in Ziliujing District, Zigong City, the old city center, its range extends from the roadside well to Huojing Tuo, with a total length of 1.5 kilometers. It is an ancient salt road for transporting well salt in the old days. The buildings in the old street are all in the style of southern Sichuan residences from the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. There are undulating ordinary small buildings scattered on the stone slab road, and there are also large households with deep courtyards scattered among them. It is an ideal place for seeking seclusion and reminiscing about the past, and for leisure and vacation. The main attractions include the Brine Sky Stick, the Ancient Dragon Well, the Old Street Archway, the Roadside Well, the Stone Slab Street, the Salt Merchant Furniture Exhibition Hall, the Yiyuan, the Ziliujing Painting Workshop, the Ziliujing Site, etc.
Pingqiao Waterfall: 'China's only natural city waterfall', Pingqiao Waterfall, is China's only naturally formed waterfall in the city, 'Traveling all over the world, it is rare to see a waterfall in the city', Pingqiao Waterfall is a business card of Gongjing District, Zigong. Since the Han Zhang Emperor (75-88 AD), it has been flowing through the city, and it has a history of more than 1950 years.
'Food is in China, taste is in Sichuan', when it comes to Sichuan cuisine, people who know how to eat and understand food will definitely not think of Chengdu, but Zigong and Leshan. The essence of Leshan cuisine is snacks, and the essence of Zigong cuisine is big dishes. There is a saying that Salt Gang dishes dominate the culinary world,
Fresh pot rabbit, explosive vegetables, boiled beef, diving fish, as the origin of 'Salt Gang dishes', Zigong cuisine is as amazing as its lantern festival, and it is so enjoyable that it is called a good deal. The famous boiled beef originated in Zigong, and it is said that no rabbit can walk out of Zigong alive.
