The Shanghai Museum is a treasure trove of Chinese history and culture, offering an exceptional journey through millennia of art and craftsmanship. The museum's architecture itself is a blend of traditional and modern design, setting the stage for an immersive experience. Its extensive collection spans diverse categories, from ancient bronzes and ceramics to calligraphy, paintings, and intricate jade carvings.
While it can get crowded, especially during peak hours, the museum's significance as a cultural institution makes it a must-visit for art enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of China's rich heritage.

Discovery of seals among other great works
This was the best part of my trip, getting to see all these beautiful works by great artist such as Tang Bohu’s hanging scroll of the willow side bridge and how Seals were made from 200BC with skilled carvings on copper, jade, crystal or agate. beautiful calligraphy. Ancient Clothings of ethnic minorities and the tools they used. There was also the Jade exhibition and European art exhibition both which I did not go to, since I did not have enough time, the entry was free! I was pleasantly surprised by that. I would recommend anyone visiting Shanghai to visit this amazing museum. You learn so much and have a deeper appreciation for the incredible skills some of these artist have. Also they have an amazing gift shop with some very lovey souvenirs, totally worth the buy. Would definitely visit this museum again next time I’m in Shanghai.

Once upon a time in Shanghai
Shanghai is a popular tourist destination known for its historical landmarks such as The Bund, City God Temple and Yu Garden as well as the extensive Lujiazui skyline, many skyscrapers, and major museums including the Shanghai Museum and the China Art Museum.
During one of trips to Shanghai about 5 years ago one of the places we've been to is the Yu Garden also know as Yuyuan. It lies next to the City God Temple in Shanghai’s Old City, which was dedicated to the city’s spirits, or protectors, in the 1400s. The classic Chinese-style gardens, complete with rockeries, ponds, pavilions and towers, feature several distinct areas separated by grey tiled ridges called “dragon walls”. The area surrounding the gardens holds endless opportunities to try street food and buy souvenirs. If you can’t make it to Suzhou in Jiangsu province, which is better known for its gardens, Yuyuan will surely not failed you.
Next is Shanghai Disneyland. Many of the rides, attractions and characters have been redesigned to cater to a Chinese tourist audience. A group of Chinese zodiac gardens make up its centre – with the 12 animals represented by Disney characters – and instead of Main Street USA, there is Mickey Avenue. There’s also more live entertainment here than in other Disney theme parks. It’s a great choice if you need a break from traditional sightseeing in Shanghai
And if ever you feel tired being surrounded by tourist crowds, I highly recommended Wan Shan bird and flower market. Flowers are sold alongside pet birds, fish, chinchillas and even crickets – from the tiny to the unnervingly massive – in this market, which sits at the junction of Tibet Road and Huiji Road. You’ll also find potted plants, such as bonsai trees and succulents, on sale. Antiques and jade are also sold nearby, in case you’re good for small mammals, and your aquarium and window box are both fully stocked.
Temples can be a great way to find peace within the noise of Shanghai tourism and city life in general, whether or not you are religious. The Buddhist temple of Longhua is the oldest in the city and has a fascinating history, from its inception in 242CE to i#spooktaculartrip s use as a Japanese-run internment camp during World War II. I suggest you simply walk around the complex, or buy some incense and send up a prayer of your own.
These attractions are a great place to start if you only have a few days to experience the city’s splendour and I know you’ll find something worth visiting around every corner in the largest city in China.

Ancient Chinese Art in Shanghai Museum
Close to People's Square in Huangpu District, Shanghai Museum is a large museum of ancient Chinese art. It's not a museum about Shanghai, but more about Chinese ancient art in general.
The museum is divided into eleven galleries and three exhibition halls. The eleven galleries cover most of the major categories of Chinese art: Ancient Bronze, Ancient Ceramics, Paintings, Calligraphy, Ancient Sculpture, Ancient Jade, Coins, Seals, and Minority Nationalities.

Shanghai museum - Very nice!
Getting There - Near Dashijie subway station.
Attractions - Plenty of exhibitions such as: Ceramics, ancient Chinese sculpture, painting calligraphy, ancient Silk Road coins, and many more!
My personal favorite was the calligraphy exhibition.
Food & Restaurants - There are places where you can buy drinks and snacks.
I unfortunately didn’t have much time when I went
but I saw plenty of other visitors with headsets. Not sure what the language options are but if you have enough time, I’d recommend getting a pair.
I stayed for about 2 hours but I’d recommend over 3 hours if you don’t have a time constraint.
Enjoy your visit! ☺️

History is No More Mistery
🧭 Shanghai History Museum is one of the most interesting museums were you can learn really a lot.
🧭 Getting there these days you need to make a reservation through wechat. Otherwise there is no way to get inside. Arrive in time, stand for a while in a line and here u go. You DO need and audio guide, cause without it you will be wondering around without knowing anything.
🧭 The couns exhibition hall is quite impressive, it showed Chinese coins of all kinds and shapes, some of them are bigger than my hand. The halls with traditional paintings and ceramis are amazing as well. I can watch those vases forever.
🧭 There were quite many things that turned out to be not what I expected, some of them really puzzeled me (like the fruit bowl on the pic #2)
Museum is located on People Square (Subway line 1 or 2), it is very easy to find.

The Shanghai Museum is hosting a display from a Tang Dynasty shipwreck. Many examples of exquisitely made porcelain from all over ancient China illustrate how the maritime Silk Road worked. Worth an hour to visit, but be sure to book in advance and all tickets for the day were sold out by 11am.

The Shanghai Museum was founded in 1952. The new museum was built and put into use in 1996. It is located in Renmin Avenue, Huangpu District, across the road from the famous Peoples Square, which eats fried chicken. The building of the Shanghai Museum looks particularly like a cornucopia from the outside. Baidu Encyclopedia said that the overall structure is a combination of a square base and a round out of the building, with the meaning of China's round place. I probably believe it this way.
A few basic exhibitions, the first one I went to was the ancient ceramics hall. Oops, sigh, its really a lot of good things that have never been concentrated on a large scale. Collections can best reflect the basic level of a museum. A single piece of boutique can find a lot of angles to elaborate and express, not to mention these series of fine cultural relics, and think carefully, only to be thankful that they are not engaged in cultural relics research.
timetrees.
After many years, I visited the Shanghai Museum again
I don't know how many years it has been since I last visited the Shanghai Museum. I remember the first time was an activity organized by the school. It was not long after its opening and it wasn't free yet. The museum was packed with people and there were so many collections.
Visiting the museum again, it seems nothing has changed, yet everything has changed.
The unchanged part is the building that symbolizes the round sky and square earth, and the stone lions in front of the museum that imitate the Northern Wei Dynasty.
What has changed is the building that I once thought was grand and upscale now seems small, and the rich collections inside the museum have decreased a lot. Now, the admission is free, but you need to make a reservation with a little 🍊.
Sitting in the second-floor restaurant, I can still see the municipal building across the street. The once advanced interior decoration now seems to be retro.
There are still quite a few interesting exhibits worth seeing: Ming and Qing dynasty furniture, calligraphy and paintings, ethnic minority costumes...

Shanghai | Liangzhu Civilization Special Exhibition with a reservation channel for a niche audience
| Liangzhu Civilization Special Exhibition with a reservation channel for a niche audience. Last year, I visited the Zhaizi China·Central Plains Bronze Civilization Exhibition at the Shanghai Museum, and this Dragon Boat Festival, I came to the Shanghai Museum again for the second phase of How China - Empirical China·Liangzhu Civilization Special Exhibition🙋♀️
I had previously visited the Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou and watched the documentary 'Liangzhu Civilization', so I have some understanding of the Liangzhu culture. It is recommended to watch the 5-episode CCTV documentary 'Liangzhu Civilization' before coming.
💡About the Special Exhibition
The exhibition gathers more than 320 sets of unearthed cultural relics treasured by 19 museums and archaeological institutions nationwide. It tells the story of 'civilization' through four major sections: ancient states, rice cultivation, handicraft industry, and jade ware. It leads the audience through time, approaching famous archaeological sites such as Dongshan Village, Lingjiatan, Liangzhu, and Fuquanshan, to appreciate the charm of prehistoric culture and art in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

❗Reservation Channel
Due to the special exhibition, entering the Shanghai Museum requires advance reservation. In the Shanghai Museum's gzh menu, you need to arrive at the scheduled time. If the gzh reservations are full, friends can go to the small 🍊 app: Cultural Travel Code, search for Shanghai Museum reservation! There are still tickets available in Cultural Travel Code! That's how I made my reservation!
♦️Special Exhibition Cultural and Creative Products
My favorite is the small pottery jar fridge magnet, and there are also blind boxes, ice cream, washi tape, bookmarks, pendants, clothes, stamp books, and more.
♦️Special Exhibition Stamping
Stamping is at the entrance of the first-floor special exhibition. There are many people queuing but it's fast. There are a total of 6 stamps, and stamp books are also sold at the stamping area. It is recommended to go early for stamping, as the quality of the stamps may not be as good towards the end of the exhibition period.

Summer Top Stream | Shanghai Museum
Located in the wide public Shanghai Museum, it is a must-visit museum for Shanghai girls when they were young, so my impression of it is still stuck in the deep impression of bronzes during student days. However, in recent years, the museum craze has gradually attracted me, who was not very good at history when I was young. More and more special exhibitions have entered our lives. It turns out that museums are also fun to visit! This summer, the three major special exhibitions of the Shanghai Museum have attracted countless tourists. Remember to make an appointment in advance.
1⃣️Empirical China - Songze Liangzhu Civilization Special Exhibition,
🗓️Exhibition date: June 20th - October 8th
📍Exhibition Hall: The first floor A few years ago, I was fortunate to see the culture of the 30° north latitude in the Liangzhu Museum in Hangzhou. I was amazed at the civilization of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River 5000 years ago. This time it brought jade cong, human head pottery bottles, ivory scepters and other precious cultural relics to Shanghai, allowing more people to see the ancient civilization.
2⃣️Yu Chuan Liu Fang - Shanghai Museum Collection of Song and Yuan Ancient Books,
🗓️Exhibition date: May 16th - August 13th
📍Exhibition Hall: The second floor The ink and brush of the Song and Yuan periods are rare to be passed down to this day, but in the Shanghai Museum, you can see dozens of ancient books from the Song and Yuan periods, most of which are rare and good editions, and the documentary value is incomparable. Moreover, this exhibition also has exquisite seals and promotional inner pages.
3⃣️With the Times - The Art of Rubbing in Gold and Stone,
🗓️Exhibition date: July 7th - October 8th
📍Exhibition Hall: The fourth floor The special feature of this exhibition is the rubbing of bronzes, which brings the visual collision of ink shadow and auspicious gold to the audience, and deeply experiences the charm of traditional Chinese craftsmanship.
⚠️Tips: From July 7th to August 20th, there is an additional night show every Friday night.

Jade Civilization
"Empirical China - Songze·Liangzhu Civilization Archaeological Special Exhibition", is the second major exhibition in the "Why China" series of the Shanghai Museum.
The special exhibitions of the Shanghai Museum are of high standard, always able to impress.
📝In the Songze era, jade evolved from simple decoration to jade ceremonial objects representing status and rank;
📝Before the Liangzhu civilization, they used jade to distinguish ranks, differentiate identities, display power, and created a series of jade ceremonial objects represented by cong, bi, and yue, and the ritual system behind them, ultimately forming a set of jade systems and social norms for different social strata.
It can be said that the most important feature of the early civilization in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River is the jade civilization. The pioneering ceremonial jade system has had a profound impact on the development of Chinese civilization in later generations.

✔️Eternal beauty
3️⃣Gods and Humans
✔️The world, divine abodes, and humanity
✔️Protection and eternity
4️⃣Offerings and Rituals
🌟Highlights:
✅Travel through ancient Egypt and unveil the 'true identity' of mummies that have been a mystery for over 2000 years. Ancient Egyptian beliefs held that only by preserving the body could one achieve 'eternal life'. The complex mummification process was exclusively enjoyed by the nobility. The 'true identity' of mummies from over 2000 years ago is now revealed, becoming an archaeological treasure that takes you deep into the 'mystery of origin'.
✅Ancient Egyptian cat slave culture: Cat mummies bear witness to their owners' belief in eternal life, showing unique reverence for the sun god. Ancient Egyptians not only made mummies of human corpses but also accompanied their pets in mummified form, among which cat mummies are famous. Ancient Egyptians loved cats and worshipped the sun god, believing that cats' eyes glow because they absorb the sun's light during the day and release it at night.
✅Mysterious charm of the 'Book of the Dead': The ancient Egyptian guide to the resurrection of the deceased, a precious discovery from the pyramids. The 'Book of the Dead' is one of the earliest surviving documents of mankind and one of the earliest literary works. Made of papyrus, it is an ancient writing medium. The book depicts hymns and spells to the gods, serving as a 'resurrection' guide for ancient Egyptians on their journey to the afterlife. Most of the existing 'Book of the Dead' was excavated from pyramids and ancient tombs, making it quite precious!
✅Tombs and ritual artifacts, continuing the legend of Ramses!
The majority of existing ancient Egyptian art comes from the luxurious tombs of the nobility. The decorations and rituals inside the tombs are elaborate and valuable, with relief murals, statues of deities, the Eye of Horus, scarabs, etc., not only showcasing the vast mythological system but also reflecting the efforts of ancient Egyptians to ensure happiness in the afterlife.
✅One of the earliest glazed pottery, ancient Egyptian faience!
The exhibition features a large number of precious jewelry and pottery that fully restore the life of ancient Egyptian nobility. Some of the jewelry is themed around pharaohs and deities, while others mainly depict scenes from daily life, such as farming and fishing.

Shanghai, China Ancient Bronzes 3/4
Chinese bronzes mainly refer to various objects formed from copper and tin through smelting and forging from the late Xia dynasty to the Qin and Han periods. The Chinese Bronze Age began around 2000 BC, spanning the Xia, Shang, Western Zhou, Spring and Autumn, Warring States, and Qin-Han periods, covering nearly 15 centuries. It is an important part of Chinese culture, with significant historical and aesthetic value, especially the bronzes from the Shang and Zhou periods. The culture of bronzes was at the core of the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties, where the ritual vessels of the Shang and Zhou eras held both cultural and extremely high artistic value. Shanghai, China
