#Tōfuku-ji Temple Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Kyoto is one of the best place of Autumn leaf spot. Feeling so much calm and relax to stay in the Japanes temples.
I went to various places in Kyoto to enjoy the famous maples, famous and niche, but there is only one of the first resorts in Kyoto, Dongfu Temple.
Tungfu Temple is the largest Zen temple in Kyoto, named after Nara Todai-ji Temple and Kofuku-ji Temple. This place is one of the most popular spots for viewing autumn leaves in Kyoto. Every autumn, visitors are constantly coming.
Tungfu Temple is a popular spot in the red leaf season, very close to Fushimi Inari Temple, so there are many tourists. From the tram, you can see the crowds of people. The ladies and sisters wearing kimonos are happy to buy specialties and snacks. Although I have gone to many monasteries in the past few days, only Dongfu Temple has made me feel like a crowd.
When you get out of the subway, you have to go a long way. The most famous ones on this road are these lovely little Buddhas.
Stepping into Dongfu Temple first has to pass a wooden bridge. This angle is the very famous red leaf scenery of Dongfu Temple. However, when I arrived, I have already withered. After a few days of actual shooting, I summed up a rule: the red leaves are red from the canopy, and the leaves are the first to fall. When the red is red, it is still green. When it is red, it has already fallen. For my late-night players, the scenery from the top down is basically not good, they are all scorpions, but they are still good from the bottom up.
Tongfu Temple's famous Tongtianqiao and Abbot's Courtyard are all charged separately. Once inside, it is full of grand red leaves, and there is a feeling of covering the sky, which also reflects the conclusion that the red leaves are still perfect from below. Haha.
This area is blocked by a fence, so it is very crowded, and it is impossible to shoot portraits. You can only look up and watch the light and shadow of the red leaves.

Easily accessible via JR Nara as it’s just one stop from Kyoto station and a 10m walk. We were lucky with the timing and got to witness the changing autumn colours - 1,000¥ pp to gain access to the garden and bridge for viewing the foliage. You can skip the paid area and still see the foliage from the bridge from the top.

Tofuku-ji is a prominent Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan, founded in 1236 by the powerful Fujiwara clan. Renowned for its stunning autumn foliage, it was established by the influential monk Enni Ben'en, who brought the teachings of the Chinese Linji school to Japan. The temple's name, Tofuku-ji, translates to "Wisteria Vine Temple," inspired by the wisteria flowers that adorn its grounds.
Throughout its history, Tofuku-ji faced challenges such as fires and wars, leading to multiple reconstructions. The complex comprises various sub-temples, each with its own unique features and gardens. Tofuku-ji played a crucial role in shaping Japanese Zen Buddhism, emphasizing meditation and spiritual discipline. Today, it stands as a cultural and spiritual landmark, drawing visitors for its architectural beauty, serene gardens, and the annual Tsutenkyo Bridge viewings during the vibrant fall season.

Tofuku-ji Temple is one of the five major temples in Kyoto, Japan. There are different styles of abbot gardens in the four north and south of the temple, among which the northern court is the most famous. The washable jade bridge in the temple is the best place to see the red leaves in Kyoto every autumn.
Dongfu Temple is open from 9am to 4pm, free of charge. Tickets and slippers are required for certain areas. Non-red leaves season, there are very few people, very quiet, is a rare place to cultivate and cultivate.
Tofuku-ji Temple is the largest Zen temple in Kyoto. It is one of the most popular spots for viewing autumn leaves in Kyoto. Every autumn, visitors are in constant stream. At the same time, Dongfu Temple is also famous for its beautiful gardens. In the spring, the green leaves and moss that stretched out in layers will set off the ancient temple. The first is to go to the Woyun Bridge. There is no need for tickets here. You can see the bridge. As soon as I walked over, I was so dumbfounded. Is this too exaggerated? ! The whole piece of red ocean, the United States will not speak, and after entering the Woyun Bridge, you will need to buy tickets after entering Dongfu Temple. It should be the best day to choose the best maple leaf, all red is very bright. Going to the Tongtian Bridge and seeing the Woyun Bridge just now, there is no hesitation. This is the most beautiful place for my trip to enjoy the maple! Unbelievable beauty! Paintings are not dare to use color so bold!
Although the psychological preparation for Dongfu Temple was overcrowded, it was still shocked. The first batch of visitors came to watch almost in the form of movements. This shows how famous the first temple in Kyoto is.
Tokyo-ji Temple is the largest Zen temple in Kyoto. The bridge from the temple is the best place to see the red leaves. The whole temple has 25 towers, and the oldest surviving mountain gate is a national-level precious cultural relic. In addition to the beautiful view of Tongtianqiao, Dongfu Temple is also famous for its many excellent gardens. This time, the delicate fusion of moss and rock is more interesting than the maple.
It is recommended that you watch it early and early in the morning. If you arrive in the afternoon, you will not move. ~

Built in 1239, Dongfu Temple is the largest Zen temple in Kyoto and the general hospital of the Linjizong Dongfu Temple. It covers an area of 200,000 square meters. In the years of war and the fire in 1881, the temple, the court, the kitchen, and the house were burned together, and then rebuilt successively. The Tongtian Bridge in the temple is a scenic spot for viewing red leaves. The whole temple has 25 towers, and the oldest surviving mountain gate is a national-level precious cultural relic. Tourists in Kyoto are constantly changing throughout the year, from late March to late May; late September to late November is the best tourist season. The most beautiful time should be the season when the cherry blossoms bloom and the red leaves are in love.
Kyoto's spring and autumn seasons are pleasant, and the degree of cold in winter is also famous. Compared with nearby towns such as Osaka and Kobe, the temperature is always 1 to 2 degrees lower. Plus, there is no equipment for the greenhouse in the temple, so be prepared for warm clothing. In particular, the temple's floor is cold and icy, wearing stockings and thin socks, and the feet will be frozen and numb, preferably with socks or gloves.
Opening hours: 9:00-16:00
