Hangzhou Exhibition|Hearing the story of Zhejiang people going to sea for 8,000 years
"To the East is the Sea - Zhejiang Marine Culture Exhibition" is the first historical and archaeological exhibition in China with the theme of regional marine civilization. The 1,000-square-meter exhibition space tells the story of Zhejiang people and the ocean from prehistoric times to the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The earliest seafood industry: starting with canoes and spearfishing
The earliest canoe discovered in China is the "First Canoe of China" which has been moored at Kuahu Bridge for more than 8,000 years. More than 8,000 years ago, along the coast of eastern Zhejiang, the ancestors of Jingtou Mountain had already shot fish darts into the sea. The people of Jingtoushan mainly made a living by gathering, fishing and hunting near the coast, and fish darts were the main fishing tools at the time, representing the coastal life of the people of Jingtoushan.
The Jingtoushan site in Yuyao, Ningbo, which dates back 8,300 years, is the earliest and deepest shell mound site discovered in China to date. A large number of marine shellfish and marine fish remains have been unearthed from the cultural layer of the site. More than 1,000 years earlier than the Hemudu culture, the Jingtoushan site has great academic value in studying the origin of China's maritime culture and was selected as one of the "Top Ten Archaeological Discoveries in China in 2020."
The Great Wall on the Sea that Cannot Be Moved: Advanced Seawall
Haining Yuling Stone Pond, the Great Wall and the Grand Canal are known as the three major ancient engineering projects in my country. In the 21st year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1542), Huang Guangsheng, the assistant water conservancy official of Zhejiang Province, took the strengths of various companies and pioneered the five horizontal and five vertical fish scale ponds in Haiyan. The fish scale pond has a strong ability to resist erosion and is known as the "eternal pond". In the Qing Dynasty, Zhejiang Governor Zhu Shi, Grand Secretary Ji Zengyun and others improved on the basis of their predecessors, and the Fish Scale Stone Pond in Haining became a typical pond type in Zhejiang during the Qing Dynasty. Looking at the pond from the side, the stone layers are arranged like fish scales, neat, beautiful and solid, so it is named "Fish Scale Pond".
The first appearance of the "foreign trade hit": they travel on merchant ships and pass through ports
Among the commercial ports in eastern Zhejiang, Ningbo Port is the most famous. With the discovery of the ruins of the ancient port of Shuomen in Wenzhou, Wenzhou Port has been confirmed as one of the important ports for maritime trade in my country since the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The "foreign trade hit" Longquan celadon a thousand years ago entered the sea from Wenzhou and went to the world.
Rare Buddhist art treasures in the same frame: Witnessing the history of the sea
Two precious Buddhist scriptures are exhibited together for the first time: two volumes of the Lotus Sutra. Both are classics of the Tiantai Sect, one is a printed version from the Tang and Five Dynasties, and the other is a handwritten version from the Northern Song Dynasty. The latter was written in silver, while words such as "Buddha" and "Tathagata" were written in gold. After more than a thousand years, the silver characters have oxidized and faded, while the gold characters are still shining. Time has been left on the scriptures in a visible way.
At the end of the exhibition, a multimedia video takes us back to the time when Zhejiang people stepped out on the waves, starting with canoes, fishing boats, merchant ships, ferries... Generations of Zhejiang people have lived on the sea, resisted the tides, and engaged in trade and cultural exchanges at sea.
The ocean is a symbol of freedom and openness. To the east is the sea, the future and hope.
