Sardinia Road Trip (4)
Leaving Olbia and heading west back to the province of Sassari, I was stopped in my tracks by Castelsardo. This old town on the cliff looks like a colorful building block embedded in the rock, with an ancient castle at the top overlooking the white-capped, turbulent sea. Following the "Historic Center" guide map, I ducked into the stone alleys and found the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie (12th–13th century). Bronze plaques record the transition between the Benedictines and the Franciscans, along with the mysterious "Black Christ" and a bell from 1601. The wind blew from the sea into the old town, the medieval stone walls soaked in salt, and every step felt like walking through layers of history. I decided to just stay here and relax, quietly soaking in the town from day to night until it felt like a well-worn treasure. The scenery was beautiful, the people were nice, and the food and freshly caught fish were mouthwatering—I couldn't bear to leave. Continuing along the coastline back to Alghero, the shore remained wild, with the deep blue sea churning like crushed gold and white waves crashing against the rocks with foam. From the tranquility of Villasimius to the weathered charm of Castelsardo, and the ceaseless sound of the waves along the way, the wildness of Sardinia was fully captured in my eyes. Along the way, white sand beaches, black sand beaches, golden sand beaches, white pebble beaches, gravel beaches... the work fatigue was long ago swept away by the sea breeze. My original intention of island-hopping in the Mediterranean was fulfilled right here, amidst the alternation of ancient castles and ocean waves—grounded and free.

Some sunset spots are all about finding the highest viewpoint. In Alghero, I preferred being right down at the harbor. As evening approaches, the boats turn into silhouettes and the masts create hundreds of thin lines against the changing sky. Behind them, the Mediterranean slowly shifts from bright blue to gold and orange. What I liked most was how naturally sunset fits into an evening in Alghero. You can spend the afternoon exploring the old town, walk along the historic walls and then end up beside the harbor without needing to plan a separate sunset trip. And after the sun disappears, you are already exactly where you want to be - next to the old streets, restaurants and waterfront. I've seen more dramatic sunset viewpoints, but Alghero reminded me that atmosphere matters just as much as elevation. Sometimes all you need is a harbor full of boats, an open Mediterranean horizon and nowhere else you need to be.
