🇹🇿 Ngorongoro Crater | Tanzania 🌍
A giant volcanic crater in central Africa – a view you must see with your own eyes.
If you have the chance to visit Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, don't miss the viewpoint at the top of the crater rim. This is another highlight that is just as beautiful as seeing the wildlife below.
From the viewpoint, you can see the vast volcanic crater floor stretching as far as the eye can see, surrounded by large mountains. In the center is a grassland interspersed with water sources, while in front, uniquely shaped trees and wildflowers grow along the hillsides.
What you see may look like an ordinary grassland, but this is actually one of the volcanic calderas formed by the collapse of a large volcano, becoming an important ecosystem in Africa.
🌋 What's interesting about Ngorongoro Crater?
This volcanic crater was formed approximately 2–3 million years ago after a large volcano collapsed. Currently, the crater floor covers an area of about 260 square kilometers. The crater rim is approximately 600 meters above the ground below.
Inside, there are grasslands, forests, wetlands, and lakes, which are home to many species of wildlife, such as lions, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, hippos, and the relatively rare black rhinos.
A unique feature is that you can take a safari vehicle down to the bottom of the crater to see the animals, guided by a local guide along a designated route.
📍 Location and How to Get There
Ngorongoro Crater is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania.
✈️ Travel from Thailand
You can fly from Bangkok to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), generally with a connecting flight, then travel to Arusha, the main city for starting safari trips.
🚙 From Arusha
The drive takes approximately 3-4 hours to the entrance of the conservation area, and you must allow time for the journey to the crater rim or the descent point.
It is recommended to book your trip with a licensed local safari company. Because it's convenient in terms of transportation, guides, bookings, and fees.
📸 Must-see spots:
Ngorongoro Crater Viewpoint is a viewpoint on the rim of the crater, offering a clear view of the vast area below on clear days.
For beautiful photos, we recommend visiting in the morning when visibility is good. However, on some days, fog may cover the crater rim, especially during cooler periods.
🗓️ Best time to visit?
· June–October: Relatively dry season, grasslands are golden yellow, ideal for wildlife viewing.
· November–May: Many areas are lusher, with a chance of rain and fog, offering a different kind of natural atmosphere.
💰 Costs to know:
Visiting Ngorongoro involves an entrance fee to the conservation area, and there's an additional fee for bringing your vehicle down to the bottom of the crater, separate from the safari vehicle and accommodation costs. Check the latest prices with the conservation agency or tour company before booking.
For a more relaxed trip, we recommend allocating at least 2 days and 1 night, staying in Karatu or accommodation near the crater rim to allow time for an early morning safari.
🌿 The charm of this place isn't just in the wildlife:
It also boasts unique and beautiful landscapes. Especially the view from the rim of the crater, seeing the grasslands, lakes, and mountain ranges stretching out before you.
This is another Tanzania destination perfect for nature lovers, photography enthusiasts, and those who want to experience Africa beyond just documentaries.

🇹🇿 Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania 🦁
Sometimes, a safari doesn't mean you'll see animals hunting all the time 😂
Like this picture, we saw lions relaxing very peacefully, lying in a row in the middle of a grassland, oblivious to the cars and tourists, as if they owned the place.
This is the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania, one of the safari destinations I highly recommend visiting at least once, especially the Ngorongoro Crater, which is home to wild animals in their natural habitat, including lions, zebras, buffalo, hippos, and many other species.
🦁 What's interesting about this place:
The atmosphere is completely different from a zoo. You take a safari vehicle along a designated route and have to hope you see some animals. Sometimes you see animals in the distance, and sometimes you get to see them up close unexpectedly.
What I loved was the scenery along the way, with vast grasslands, water sources, and surrounding mountains. Everywhere you look, it feels like you're watching a real wildlife documentary.
📍 For those who want to visit:
· From Arusha, it takes about 3-4 hours by car to reach the entrance of the area.
· It's recommended to book a safari vehicle with a local guide, as they use authorized vehicles and routes.
· It's best to go early in the morning; the cooler air increases your chances of seeing animals moving around.
· Bring a camera or zoom lens, as animals aren't always close by.
· If you have time, it's recommended to plan a trip of at least 2 days and 1 night to avoid rushing.
Importantly, don't expect to see every single animal, as everything depends on nature and the timing of the day.
For those who love nature and wildlife, this is a very worthwhile destination.
As for the lion in the picture… it's probably a local who enjoys life more comfortably than we do on vacation 😂🦁

🇹🇿 Engare Sero | Tanzania 🏞️🌍
Who says traveling to Africa is only about safaris and seeing wild animals? Try something different and hike along a stream through a rocky valley.
When thinking of Africa, many people picture savanna grasslands, lions, elephants, giraffes, or safari tours. But in reality, this continent has many other fascinating natural landscapes.
One of them is Engare Sero, a small village near Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, not far from the Kenyan border.
While it may not be a well-known tourist destination, for those who enjoy hiking, mountains, and want to see African nature from a different perspective, it's a fascinating place to visit.
🏞️ Hiking along a stream through a rocky valley
This image shows the scenery of a hiking trail in the Engare Sero valley, near the village of Engare Sero.
The sides of the trail are lined with steep brown cliffs, with trees scattered along the slopes. In the middle is a stream flowing over the rocks, and the trail lies along the banks.
You can see several tourists walking in a line along the rocks, some using walking sticks for support, others carrying backpacks. And you have to keep an eye on the ground the whole way.
This trail doesn't have paved paths or stairs for a comfortable walk. Some sections are large rocks, some require wading through water, and at some points, you need to hold onto rocks to maintain balance.
Therefore, it's a fairly strenuous hike, not just a short walk to take pictures after getting off the car.
💦 The destination of the trail is Ngare Sero Waterfall.
The most popular activity in this area is hiking along the stream to Ngare Sero Waterfall, which is hidden in the valley.
Along the way, you'll see a landscape distinctly different from the area around Lake Natron. The lake area is quite dry, but the valley has flowing water and vegetation growing along the stream.
The beauty here isn't just at the destination, but also the atmosphere during the hike – the towering cliffs, sunlight filtering through the valleys, and the sound of flowing water all along the way.
However, reaching the waterfall depends on the trail conditions and water level each day. If the water is flowing strongly or there's a risk, the guide may adjust the route or ask you to turn back before reaching the destination.
🌋 What can you do after visiting Ngare Sero?
This area is near Lake Natron, a famous saltwater lake known for its flamingos, and the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano is located in the vicinity.
If you have time, you can plan a trip to see the lake, hike along the waterfall trail, and learn about the lifestyle of the Maasai community in the area.
However, it's important to understand that Engare Sero is not a major tourist town; facilities are limited, and some parts of the road are unpaved. Therefore, it's advisable to plan accordingly.
📌 Information for those planning a trip:
📍 Location: Engare Sero (Engaresero), Lake Natron, Northern Tanzania 🇹🇿
🚗 Transportation: Starting from Arusha, Tanzania, driving to the Lake Natron area takes approximately 4–6 hours or more depending on the route and road conditions. A 4WD vehicle and a driver familiar with the area are recommended.
🥾 Recommended Activities: Hike Engare Sero Gorge towards the waterfall, explore the landscape around Lake Natron, and visit the community with a local guide.
⏰ Hiking Duration: The popular waterfall trail requires approximately 2–3 hours, depending on the starting point. Walking Speed and Water Levels
🗓️ Best Time to Visit: Dry weather is generally better for hiking in the valley, but always check the weather and water levels with your guide before departure.
👟 Footwear: Hiking boots or water shoes with good grip and that can withstand getting wet are recommended. Avoid flat sandals as some rocks are very slippery.
🎒 What to Bring: Drinking water, hat, sunscreen, quick-drying clothing, waterproof bag for phone and camera, and spare shoes or clothing.
🏕️ Accommodation: Campsites and simple lodging are available around Lake Natron. Reservations are recommended, especially if you require a vehicle with driver and guide for multiple activities.
💰 Costs: There may be separate community fees, guide fees, and entrance fees from transportation and accommodation. Request a full breakdown of costs before booking.
📸 Photography: When sunlight shines through the valley, the rock formations appear beautiful, but stop at a stable point before taking photos as some sections of the trail are near streams.
⚠️ Precautions: Hike with a local guide. Do not wade into deep water alone, and avoid entering the valley during rain or when there is a risk of flash floods.
For those who enjoy hands-on nature trips involving real hiking and a bit of exhilaration, and aren't overly concerned with comfort, Engare Sero is a place worth considering.
We recommend staying near Lake Natron for at least one night, as the journey from Arusha takes several hours, and there are other nearby attractions to explore.
The image of a stream flowing through a rocky gorge, with tourists slowly making their way along the cliffside, might not be the typical image of Africa we're used to, but it shows how much more diverse the continent's nature is.
Africa isn't just about wildlife viewing. Sometimes, simply walking into a gorge, listening to the sound of flowing water, and gazing at the surrounding cliffs can be an unforgettable experience. 🌿❤️
