Leisurely tour of Lushui Lake: a lake of a thousand islands, half a day in the rivers and lakes From Xianning city center toward Chibi, just a 40-minute drive, you’ll come upon a stretch of clear water embraced by mountains—this is Lushui Lake. Named after the Eastern Wu general Lu Xun who once stationed troops here, the 57-square-kilometer lake is dotted with over 800 islands, earning it the nickname "Little Thousand Islands Lake of Hubei" or simply "Little Thousand Islands Lake." Board the boat at dawn to take in the full lake view Just after 9 AM, the ticket office at the scenic area is already bustling. I bought a single eco-lake sightseeing ticket for 58 yuan. A local friend quietly advised, “Package tickets are for tour groups. If you’re on your own, just buy the boat ticket.” The boat departs from Qingquan Pier. Once on board, head straight to the upper deck—the entire lake view unfolds before your eyes. As the boat sets off, the breeze carries the fresh scent of water plants. The 800-plus islands layer upon layer, some covered in pine trees like emeralds floating in the lake, others revealing just a small sandy beach, like green gems scattered across the water. The boat’s wake leaves a long trail of white waves. Egrets startled in the reeds take flight, skimming the water’s surface. Island time: from dinosaurs to Water Margin The boat stops at several islands along the way. If you have time, pick two to explore. Noon: lake fresh served with lake views By lunchtime, we disembarked and found a farmhouse restaurant near the pier. The owner and kitchen staff chatted familiarly, clearly a local favorite spot where regulars bring friends—this kind of local hidden flavor is much more interesting than the big tourist restaurants. Afternoon: visit the Three Gorges experimental dam and learn some water conservancy history After lunch, a 10-minute drive took us to the Three Gorges Experimental Dam Theme Park (15 yuan admission). Many don’t know—the Three Gorges actually started with a "rehearsal" in Chibi. In 1958, with approval from Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai, China’s first large-scale water conservancy experimental dam was built on the Lushui River. Serving as the Yangtze Three Gorges experimental dam, it’s considered the "elder predecessor" of the Gezhouba and Three Gorges dams. The main dam and 15 auxiliary dams stretch 6.3 kilometers, with concrete, masonry, and clay dams standing side by side. Auxiliary Dam No. 8 is Asia’s longest homogeneous earth dam at 1,543 meters. Walking on the dam, massive gates and intersecting steel frames come into view. The concrete dam body contrasts with the gentle waves, a silent dialogue between 20th-century engineering and natural landscape. Inside the exhibition hall, detailed models explain the bloodline connection between the "small dam" and the Three Gorges. Orange Island is a bit of a mixed experience, and I'm honestly not entirely sure whether I'd consider it a must-visit in Changsha.It's a large, green, and pleasant park, with beautiful riverside views and plenty of space for walking. If you enjoy places with historical significance or simply want to experience a different side of the city, it's definitely worth considering.Most visitors seem to take the sightseeing train to the southern end of the island, where the famous Mao Zedong statue is located. That's also where you'll find plenty of people taking photos, so don't expect a particularly quiet experience.The main downside is that visiting the island takes quite a bit of time, especially if you want to explore it properly. And while it's certainly a nice place, I'm not sure the experience justifies spending several hours here if you have a limited amount of time in Changsha and other places you'd like to see.On the other hand, if you're simply looking for a relaxing walk through a green park, with opportunities to stop by the river and enjoy the scenery, it's a lovely option.Overall, I'd say it's worth visiting if you have some extra time or are particularly interested in Chinese history. Otherwise, I wouldn't necessarily put it at the very top of your Changsha itinerary.
