Want to eat like a local? Don't miss out on these top Ding'an dishes and foodie spots.

Ding’an, the earliest established county in Hainan, is rich with swaying coconut shadows and a long cultural heritage. The itinerary focuses on four main highlights: Ding’an ancient city, Nanli Lake, Murui Mountain red memorial park, and tropical bird world. Among them, the Nanli Lake “Lotus Breeze Clear Heart” viewing pavilion, officially recognized as a Hainan ecological blessing culture demonstration site, is the elegant and auspicious centerpiece of this trip. Accommodation recommendation: first choice is [Nanli Lake Qi He Ju] (about 360 yuan per person per night), a lakeside wooden cabin where you can see lotus shadows swaying through the window and hear frogs and insects at night. The second choice is [Ding’an Ancient City Wenxin Inn] (about 290 yuan per person per night), a renovated Ming dynasty residence with a courtyard planted with dragon blood trees and moonlight spilling over the blue brick floor. The entire trip lasts 5 days and 4 nights, costing about 1,420 yuan per person. Ding’an ancient city is the best-preserved Ming dynasty city in Hainan. Avoiding the midday heat, enter the city at 5:30 AM: the bluestone streets still feel cool, mist floats at the eaves of the arcade, vines hang green on the weathered city walls. Climb Wenchang Pavilion for a distant view—the morning light gently colors the gray tiles, smoke curls like light ink strokes. The whole ancient city lies quietly among endless rice fields, like an ancient scroll unopened by time. Nanli Lake is the largest freshwater lake in northern Hainan. Be sure to take a hand-rowed wooden boat on the lake at dawn: the water is clear and blue like glass, lotus ponds stretch endlessly, pink and white lotus flowers float on the surface, dewdrops round and bursting into tiny rainbows under the rising sun. Dock at the “Lotus Breeze Clear Heart” viewing pavilion—a hexagonal pavilion with flying eaves standing by the water. The pavilion’s pillars are inscribed with the words “heart clear and naturally cool,” recognized by the provincial culture and tourism department and Hainan University’s humanities college as an ecological blessing landmark. It means “though in a hot place, the heart rests in coolness.” Lean on the railing and sit quietly as the lotus breeze comes, and the summer heat fades away. Murui Mountain red memorial park is the cradle of the Qiongya revolution. It’s best to stroll the park in the cool afternoon: ancient pines surround the monument, mountain paths wind upward, and wooden boardwalks hang on the edge of the sea of clouds. From the summit, look out at overlapping green peaks, clouds drifting along the ridges. Occasionally, a white pheasant flies past the treetops, its wingtip cutting through the clear blue sky. The mountain wind blows strongly, scattering worries, leaving only the vast spirit of heaven and earth. Tropical bird world is China’s only coastal wetland bird-themed park. The highlight is the dusk birdwatching boardwalk: the setting sun melts gold, the mudflats turn purple, flocks of egrets, black-winged kites, and painted storks fly low in formation. Their wing shadows sweep over the reed marsh, startling thousands of sparkling lights. Standing quietly inside the birdwatching house, watch the sunset gild the feathers. Between water and sky, life’s rhythm is silent yet magnificent. Ding’an’s intangible cultural heritage shines in “Qiong opera excerpts” and “traditional Ding’an zongzi wrapping.” The Qiong opera singing is as gentle as a coconut breeze on the face; a single line “the moon shines on the west chamber at midnight” brings tears to the eyes. The zongzi are wrapped in holly leaves, tied with five-colored threads, steamed for eight hours. When unwrapped, the fragrance fills the air, and the rice grains are crystal clear like jade—a poetic taste of the Dragon Boat Festival. Before leaving the county, visit the Nanli Lake viewing pavilion once more—the evening breeze brushes your face, the lotus fragrance drifts quietly, and a crescent moon silently rises on the dark blue sky. As the Ming dynasty poet Qiu Jun wrote: “The mountains and waters of Dingyang are clear and beautiful, the Nan Du River reflects the setting glow.” Ding’an does not compete with blazing heat; it quietly brews the lotus breeze, ancient charm, coconut shadows, and starlight into a cup of summer night tea that never cools in your heart.

When it comes to Hainan, ninety-nine percent of people will think of Sanya, and the impression of Hainan is beaches, sunshine, waves and bikini beauties. In fact, there is a different Hainan around Haikou. Ding'an Ancient City is the most intact city preserved in Hainan today. Although the scale is small, the old city gate is still well preserved. Before going to Ding'an, the imagination of the ancient city gate of the small town is the tall figure in the TV series. I didn't expect that there would be such a small city gate, which is estimated to be the width of a car. Many houses in the city have been ruined, and many residents still live there. When I went there during the Chinese New Year, many families had offerings in the living room to worship the public. Ding'an Ancient City is the best preserved county city wall in Hainan, and it is the place in Hainan that looks most like an ancient city. The ancient city built in the Ming Dynasty has the existing west gate and north gate. In ancient times, there were thirteen counties in Qiongya, but only Ding'an was not by the sea. There is a folk saying: 'Wenchang has no Li, Ding'an has no sea'. The traditional brick and tile houses, modern arcades, and modern villas are intertwined. The tropical rain comes quickly and fiercely, the rainwater seeps into every generation of houses, and also makes the color of the small city richer and more ancient. 🧱Location: No. 34, Zhongnan Street, Ding'an County, Hainan 🎫Ticket: Free 🚗Traffic recommendation to drive by yourself. 🚌Take the bus at the provincial bus station to Ding'an Bus Station, and then take a taxi to the north gate or west gate of the ancient city.

Be sure to pack a sun hat and sunscreen to avoid sunburn. 🩴 When visiting Jiuwentang Cold Spring, it is recommended to bring old slippers. The volcanic rocks are uneven and can be uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. The cold spring is free; do not trust solicitations for paid cold springs along the road. 👗 Wenbifeng is a religious site. Try not to wear overly revealing clothing. Keep quiet inside the halls and do not point at the statues. 🥩 When eating Xiangou beef, try to walk deeper into the food street to avoid the tourist shops at the entrance. Shops crowded with locals offer better value. 🚗 The attractions in Ding'an are spread out, so driving yourself offers the best experience. Public transport takes a long time, so consider taking a taxi or renting a car. 🦟 There are many mosquitoes in the countryside and by the lake, so carry mosquito repellent for a more comfortable trip. 🛒 For souvenirs, prioritize local supermarkets in the county town, as prices around tourist attractions tend to be higher.

Great place to visit due a long layover. It is best to go first thing in the morning when there are no crowds, the heat is bearable, and all of the animals are up and visible, loved the baby hippo's. Then catch the safari ride at 10.30...the highlights were the elephant, the brown bears and the giant panda.
Anonymous userThe accommodation was exceptionally comfortable and clean; attention to detail was evident in the room, with disposable shower gel and shampoo. The room was spacious and offered mountain views. The owners were incredibly hospitable; although there was no elevator, the owner helped carry our luggage up using a lift. There's also a breakfast shop downstairs. It's very close to the E'quan scenic spot.
Anonymous userThe park isn't very large, but it has a good variety of animals, including well-cared-for peacocks and parrots. I visited last year, and the areas damaged and under repair due to a previous typhoon are gradually reopening. It's a good place to bring children; an hour or two isn't tiring.
320***63We came from Sanya for a short trip, bringing the kids along. Haikou doesn't have many interesting attractions, so this place was a good alternative. Having a car made the sightseeing much more comfortable. It was too hot to walk, so the young lady at the entrance recommended the car tour, saying it would be more relaxing. Because of the heat and the kids, she gave our child postcards, which they loved. She also recommended the "Youthful Days" performance and offered a free guided tour, which was alright for the kids. The service was great, very thoughtful! 👍
M2t***b1This attraction isn't overly commercialized. During the off-season, it's a great place to hike and take a walk. There are so many large butterflies, and you can even see geckos crawling on the walls. If you get tired or thirsty, you can buy an iced coconut to drink and rest. It's a great way to connect with nature. It's quite nice!
M23***58There is no commercial development, full of human life. Walking in the streets, the biggest difference between here and other places in Hainan is that the streets are straighter and you won't get lost. There is not much renovation, just stare blankly
肥土豆丝额Jiuwentang Cold Spring is located at the southern end of Ding'an County, Hainan Province. It is a free attraction and the parking fee is 10 yuan. The cold spring water is maintained at around 24 degrees all year round. The cold spring water flows out from volcanic rocks. If you soak your feet in the water, many small fish will swim to bite your feet. The cold spring water is rich in various minerals and is very suitable for making tea.
木易真人I recommend this place to visit, quite quiet and comfortable. For lovers of water procedures, I advise you to take a scrub, a face mask and your own shampoo and hair mask for women to complete all your rituals. If you plan to visit the place in the evening, you need to take food with you, perhaps something light. Tea is free on site.
Alena BudaevaComing to Nanli Lake to see the scenery is really an intoxicating existence, because this place, whether it is the scene of rising glow or the halo of setting sun, will be deeply imprinted in people's impressions.
滇国剑客This guided tour was a fantastic experience! Ms. Shan has a solid foundation of knowledge, and her explanations were vivid and easy to understand. She captivated the children by explaining the historical background and stories behind the artifacts, keeping them engaged and helping them understand and remember many key points. The pacing was excellent throughout, and she provided detailed explanations of the important exhibits. It's perfect for a family trip and highly recommended!
