When most people think of Brazil, the first images are usually Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana Beach and Carnival in Rio. And yes, Rio absolutely deserves a spot on a Brazil itinerary. But Brazil is enormous, and stopping at Rio means seeing only one tiny piece of it. 👀🇧🇷 This is a country where you can walk across giant white sand dunes filled with turquoise lagoons, search for jaguars in the wetlands, hike through table-top mountains, explore colonial towns, disappear into the Amazon rainforest and still finish the trip on some of the most beautiful beaches in South America. Whatever kind of traveler you are, there’s probably a completely different version of Brazil waiting for you. 🌊 1. Lençóis Maranhenses: Brazil’s desert that fills with lagoons This might be one of the most surreal landscapes in South America. Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is covered in enormous white sand dunes, but during the wetter part of the year, rainwater collects between them and forms thousands of seasonal lagoons. The result looks almost impossible. White dunes stretching toward the horizon with clear blue and green pools sitting between them. 😭💙 You can explore by 4x4, walk across the dunes and swim in some of the lagoons when conditions are right. This is definitely somewhere I’d plan around the season rather than simply turning up at any random time of year, because the lagoon levels change significantly. Best for: unreal landscapes, photography and adventure. 🐆 2. The Pantanal: for wildlife lovers If seeing animals in the wild is high on your bucket list, put the Pantanal very high on the Brazil list. This enormous wetland stretches across parts of Brazil and neighboring countries and is one of South America’s greatest wildlife destinations. Depending on where and when you visit, you might encounter capybaras, caimans, giant otters, colorful birds and, if you’re incredibly lucky, jaguars. 🐆 Unlike dense rainforest, the more open landscapes can sometimes make wildlife easier to spot. This isn’t really a destination where I’d rush around independently trying to collect attractions. I’d choose a good wildlife lodge or guided experience and let the environment be the itinerary. Best for: safaris, birdwatching and wildlife photography. 🌿 3. The Amazon: a completely different Brazil The Amazon is one of those destinations that almost feels too big to understand until you’re actually there. Manaus is one of the major gateways into the Brazilian Amazon, but the real experience begins once you leave the city and travel deeper toward the river and rainforest. Think boat journeys, jungle lodges, wildlife walks, canoe trips, night excursions and waking up surrounded by sounds you definitely don’t hear at home. 😂🌿 One of the region’s famous natural sights is the Meeting of Waters, where the dark Rio Negro and lighter Solimões flow alongside each other before fully mixing. For me, an Amazon trip wouldn’t be about ticking off ten attractions in one day. It would be about slowing down, getting away from cities and actually spending time in the ecosystem. Best for: nature, wildlife and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. 💦 4. Foz do Iguaçu: waterfalls on an unbelievable scale You can watch videos of Iguaçu Falls all day and still not really understand the size of it. The waterfall system sits along the Brazil-Argentina border and consists of numerous cascades spread across a huge area. The Brazilian side is especially good for panoramic views, while many travelers combine it with the Argentine side for a closer experience. Either way, prepare to get wet. 😂 This is one of those attractions where I’d happily put my phone away for a few minutes because the sound and scale are half the experience. Best for: dramatic nature without a multi-day expedition. 🏛️ 5. Salvador: history, culture and seriously good food If you want history, music, color and food in the same destination, Salvador deserves much more attention. The historic Pelourinho area is filled with colorful colonial buildings, churches, cobbled streets and plazas. But Salvador is also deeply connected to Afro-Brazilian history and culture, which influences everything from religion and music to dance and cuisine. This is somewhere I’d come hungry. Look out for Bahian dishes such as acarajé, moqueca and vatapá. And don’t just walk around taking photos of colorful houses. Give yourself time to understand the history behind the city because that context completely changes the experience. Best for: culture, history, music and food. ⛰️ 6. Chapada Diamantina: Brazil for hikers Brazil isn’t only beaches and rainforest. Head inland toward Chapada Diamantina National Park and suddenly you’re surrounded by mountains, plateaus, caves, waterfalls and trekking routes. This is where adventure travelers can spend days hiking instead of lying beside the ocean. Expect massive viewpoints, hidden swimming spots and dramatic valleys. Some routes are manageable as day trips, while others are better suited to multi-day trekking. If you’re someone who looks at a giant mountain and immediately thinks, “I want to climb that,” this is probably your Brazil. 😂🥾 Best for: hiking, waterfalls and outdoor adventure. 🏝️ 7. Fernando de Noronha: the dream-island version of Brazil This is where the tropical beach fantasy becomes very real. Fernando de Noronha is an Atlantic archipelago known for dramatic coastlines, incredibly clear water and marine life. Think snorkeling, diving, beaches framed by volcanic landscapes and water that looks almost unreal in the right conditions. Because the islands are environmentally sensitive and visitor activities are regulated, this is somewhere to research properly before traveling rather than treating it like a spontaneous beach stop. It can also be significantly more expensive than many mainland Brazilian destinations. But if your dream trip revolves around ocean experiences rather than cities, this one belongs on the bucket list. Best for: diving, snorkeling and special-occasion beach trips. 🏖️ 8. Jericoacoara: dunes, lagoons and slow beach days Want tropical Brazil without a giant city? Jericoacoara, usually shortened to Jeri, has sand dunes, lagoons, beaches and that barefoot holiday energy where time stops mattering. The journey there takes a little more effort than arriving in a big resort town, but that’s part of what keeps it feeling different. Days can involve swimming, dune excursions, kitesurfing or basically doing absolutely nothing until sunset. And honestly, sometimes “watch sunset and eat dinner” is a perfectly valid itinerary. 😂🌅 Best for: slow travel, beaches and watersports. 🏘️ 9. Ouro Preto: step into colonial Brazil Not every Brazil trip needs tropical scenery. Ouro Preto offers steep cobbled streets, ornate churches and beautifully preserved colonial architecture surrounded by the hills of Minas Gerais. It’s a completely different atmosphere from Rio, São Paulo or Brazil’s beach towns. This is somewhere I’d explore slowly on foot, although those hills will absolutely make you earn your dinner. 😭 The wider Minas Gerais region is also famous for food, so definitely leave space for local specialties while you’re there. Best for: architecture, history and slower cultural travel. 🏄 10. Florianópolis: city + beach in one trip If you can’t decide between a city break and a beach holiday, Florianópolis gives you both. Located mostly on Santa Catarina Island in southern Brazil, the destination has dozens of beaches, hiking routes, surfing spots, lagoons and neighborhoods with different personalities. You can spend one day exploring the city, another hiking to a quieter beach and the next basically doing nothing beside the water. It’s also a good reminder that Brazil’s beach culture stretches WAY beyond Rio. Best for: surfing, beaches and travelers who want variety. ✨ And this still barely scratches the surface You could also build entire trips around Paraty, Recife, Olinda, São Paulo, Brasília, Ilha Grande, Bonito, Chapada dos Veadeiros and countless smaller coastal towns. That’s what makes planning Brazil difficult in the best possible way. You’re not really choosing between ten attractions. You’re choosing between completely different types of trips. Want wildlife? Pantanal. Want rainforest? Amazon. Want beaches? Fernando de Noronha or Jericoacoara. Want hiking? Chapada Diamantina. Want culture and food? Salvador. Want something that looks almost fake? Lençóis Maranhenses. Want one of the world’s great waterfalls? Iguaçu. 🗺️ My biggest Brazil planning tip Do not underestimate the distances. Brazil is huge. A destination that looks like “the next stop” on a map might require a flight rather than a quick bus or train journey. If you only have 7 to 10 days, I’d choose two or three regions and experience them properly instead of trying to cross half the country. For a first trip, something like: Rio de Janeiro → Iguaçu Falls → Salvador would already give you three completely different sides of Brazil. With more time, add the Amazon, Pantanal or one of the northeast beach destinations. And if you have several weeks? That’s when Brazil becomes dangerous because suddenly you’ll want to see everything. 😂🇧🇷 🍽️ Don’t forget the food Brazilian food also changes significantly depending on where you travel. You might be eating seafood-heavy Bahian cuisine in Salvador, Amazonian ingredients in the north, Minas Gerais comfort food inland and churrasco farther south. So please don’t finish the trip having eaten only one version of Brazilian barbecue. 😭 Part of exploring Brazil is tasting how different each region can be. That’s really why I think Brazil deserves much more than one quick stop in Rio. Coast. Wetlands. Rainforest. Mountains. Desert-like dunes. Historic cities. Islands. Waterfalls. I explored Coqueiros by simply following the sea 🇧🇷

Most tourists visiting Florianópolis head straight to the island’s famous beaches. I decided to explore Coqueiros instead, a neighborhood on the mainland of Florianópolis, just across the bay from the island. It’s not usually a beach destination for swimming. The small beaches along this part of the coast have bathing restrictions, but that doesn’t make the area any less beautiful. In fact, the waterfront is one of the reasons I loved exploring this side of the city. I didn't have a guide. I didn't have a sightseeing list. I just followed the coastline. 🌊 Praia do Riso 🌿 Praia da Saudade 🌴 Praia do Meio 🪨 Praia de Itaguaçu These beaches are connected by the waterfront, making Coqueiros a great area to explore on foot rather than simply stopping at one beach. The route also has a very different atmosphere from Florianópolis’ famous beach neighborhoods. There are walking areas, restaurants, views across the bay and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the scenery. And then comes Itaguaçu, the most distinctive part of the walk. Dozens of huge granite rocks rise from the water, creating one of the most recognizable landscapes on the mainland. The name itself comes from Tupi and means “big stone.” There’s also a famous Florianópolis legend about these rocks: according to local folklore, they are witches who were turned to stone after a forbidden party. 🧙♀️ Coqueiros also has an interesting history. The area became a popular seaside leisure destination for Florianópolis families in the early 20th century, with piers, clubs, restaurants and bathing areas developing along the coast. Today, you can experience the same waterfront at a much slower pace. A few useful things to know: 📍 Coqueiros is on the mainland of Florianópolis, not on Ilha de Santa Catarina. 🚶 The beaches are close enough to explore as a coastal walk, so you don't need to treat them as separate destinations. 🏊 Don't come here expecting Florianópolis’ typical swimming beach experience. Check the current official bathing-water conditions before entering the water. 🍽️ The waterfront is also known for its restaurants, making it easy to turn the walk into a longer afternoon or evening. 🌅 Itaguaçu is especially worth stopping at for the landscape and the views, even if you're not planning to swim. This wasn't one of the famous “must-see” places I had on my list. I simply followed the sea and ended up discovering a completely different side of Florianópolis.
