🇧🇭 Bahrain, Muharraq

Muharraq is an ancient city that's perfect for a visit after Manama. It's not a large city, but it boasts charming old alleys, ancient Bahraini houses, traditional markets, and stories of the golden age of pearl diving. A 2-day, 1-night trip is ideal.

📅 Day 1: Exploring the Old City + Following the Pearling Path

Morning: Start at the Pearling Path Visitor and Experience Center to understand why pearls were so important to Bahrain in the past. Then, walk along the Pearling Path into the old city.

This route is a UNESCO World Heritage site and passes by houses, buildings, shops, and places related to the past pearl industry. The path is approximately 3 kilometers long; allow 3-4 hours to walk and visit the various houses at your leisure.

Along the way, stop at Beit Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al Khalifa, the former residence of a Bahraini ruler. Its highlights include traditional Bahraini architecture with four central courtyards, ventilation grilles, and intricate wood carvings – perfect for architecture enthusiasts.

Afternoon-Evening Continue walking into Muharraq Souq and Souq Al Qaisariya, ancient markets that once played a significant role in the pearl trade. Today, they are lined with shops selling sweets, spices, perfumes, clothing, cafes, and restaurants.

A must-buy souvenir from Muharraq is Bahraini Halwa, a traditional Bahraini sweet. It pairs perfectly with Arabic coffee.

📅 Day 2: Old Fort + Sea View

In the morning, visit Arad Fort, an ancient seaside fort built in the late 15th century. The fort isn't very large, so 1-1.5 hours should be sufficient, but the surrounding atmosphere is great and offers beautiful photo opportunities.

Afterwards, return to the old city. If you haven't completed the Pearling Path, you can explore the remaining section or stroll through the market area again.

In the evening, we recommend taking a walk along the waterfront before returning to Nama, especially during sunset; the weather is much more pleasant than during the day.

🍴 Recommended Restaurants

For simple Bahraini food, try Our Old House - Bahraini Traditional Restaurant. They offer local dishes at reasonable prices.

Another option is Freej Bin Rashdan Bahraini Cuisine, suitable for a larger meal. There are many Bahraini dishes to try.

Recommended dishes include Machboos, Balaleet, Shakshuka, Khobz, and Karak tea.

🏨 Recommended Accommodation

If you really want to stay in Muharraq, choose Mövenpick Bahrain. It's very convenient for those with flights in and out of the city as it's directly opposite Bahrain International Airport and a short drive from the old town.

But if you don't want to change hotels, stay at Manama and visit Muharraq as a day trip, as the two cities are very close together.

📌 Tips for Visiting Muharraq

Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the charm of this city lies more in exploring the alleys than in taking a vehicle. We recommend starting with Pearling Path in the morning and exploring the market in the afternoon/evening.

The Pearling Path Visitor Centre is open approximately 10:00 AM–6:00 PM and closed on Tuesdays according to the latest information. Arad Fort is open approximately 9:00 AM–5:00 PM and closed on Fridays. Hours may vary on holidays or during festivals, so please check before traveling.

In summary: If Manama represents modern Bahrain, then Muharraq is the place to be. Muharraq is the town that best showcases "traditional Bahrain," with its old houses, markets, and the stories of pearl divers. It's a small town that should definitely be included in any Bahrain trip.
