Before I went to Napo, I thought the Black Zhuang people just wore all black. — traveler post in Napo

Before I went to Napo, I thought the Black Zhuang people just wore all black.

Napo County in Baise, Guangxi, sits right against the China-Vietnam border. As you head further into the mountains from the county seat, you'll see rocky peaks layered one after another.🧱 About 50,000 Black Zhuang, a branch of the Zhuang ethnic group, live here. Their signature is wearing all black. Black isn't considered unlucky here—the Black Zhuang find beauty in it, and it serves as the mark of their people. After visiting a village and watching them dye cloth, I realized that this all-black look is no simple feat. Waist-high vats are buried in the courtyards, filled with indigo mud fermented from indigo plants. They mix it with water, dip the white cloth in, and then hang it up to dry, repeating the process several times a day. They choose sunny days for dyeing, and when the cloth is hung out to dry, it fills the whole courtyard, drying quickly in the breeze. The cloth is greenish when first pulled out, but after sunning and washing, it gradually deepens into a shiny black color that gets brighter the more you wear it. The craft of indigo dyeing is still practiced by the older women in the village.🖐 There are quite a few rules when it comes to their clothing. Men wear black shirts and trousers with black headwraps, while women wear black shirts with right-side lapels, high-coiled headscarves, and silver necklaces that jingle when they walk. Standing against the green mountains, the all-black attire actually stands out quite a bit. According to tradition, the cloth given as a dowry when a young woman gets married must be dyed deep enough to be considered respectable. Folk songs are another essential part of their culture. The lyrics repeatedly feature the filler phrase "ne de ya," and once the tune starts, you can hear it from across the mountain valley.🎵 During holidays or when guests visit the village, families gather to sing, usually in a call-and-response style. Most of those who know how to sing are older; while many young people have left for work, the village is also teaching the children to follow along. Scholars of ethnic culture have called the customs of the Black Zhuang a "living fossil" of traditional Zhuang culture. This description is widely circulated and often mentioned by locals when introducing their culture, but it's best taken just as background information. The villages are scattered, mostly nestled in the rocky mountain areas, with a few dozen households in each. With so many rocky mountains and so little flat land, the fields are small and fragmented, requiring walks up and down the slopes. They grow corn and soybeans on the hillsides and plant a few star anise or oil tea trees around their homes. Their stilt houses are elevated, with the space underneath used for storing farm tools and firewood, while people live upstairs to keep away from the dampness. The main room has a space for a fire pit, and corn and cured meat are often hung under the eaves. The dark-colored cloth is practical and durable for working in the mountains, something the older generation often talks about. Water in the village is piped down from mountain springs, and with stone mills and bamboo baskets sitting under the eaves, life here is quiet and peaceful. The Black Zhuang Cultural Park in Tunli Village is a relatively concentrated spot in the mountains where the stilt houses, drying platforms, and main rooms are still preserved. You can watch the cloth dyeing, listen to folk songs, and enjoy home-cooked Zhuang-style dishes like corn porridge, cured meat, and pumpkin. If you visit during a festival, you might even find five-colored sticky rice, served with some sour pickles to cut the grease.🍚 The homemade rice wine is sweet and low in alcohol, but if you're not used to it, just pour a little. If you're planning to visit, here are a few things to keep in mind. Driving yourself is more flexible. Take the highway from downtown Baise to Napo, but be aware that once you enter the mountains, the roads are winding and steep, so if you get motion sickness, prepare medication in advance. There are checkpoints in the border area, so keep your ID with you and don't bury it at the bottom of your suitcase.🚗 Mid-October to November is a comfortable time to visit; the days are warm, but you'll need to add layers in the morning and evening. Summer brings a lot of rain, and mountain roads can occasionally have landslides, so keep an eye on the weather before you head out. It's often foggy in the morning, so keep a light jacket in the car. On rainy days, the stone paths can be slippery, so choose shoes with good tread. The village is quiet at night with few streetlights, so bring a small flashlight when you go out.🌿 The county seat is small, and there are only a few business-style hotels to choose from. The rooms are simple, but the hot water is plentiful. You can also eat and stay at farmhouses in the village, though there aren't many rooms, so if it's a busy time, you'll need to call ahead. Calling to ask before you book is more reliable than trying to find a place once you're up in the mountains. Before you enter the village, ask someone about how to arrange your visit and whether there's an admission fee; it's more accurate than looking up posts from a few years ago. South of the county seat, you can take a detour to the Pingmeng Port, where the China-Vietnam border trade market is full of local life. Napo is in southwestern Guangxi and borders Vietnam; you can occasionally see boundary markers along the border road. The scenery isn't exactly breathtaking, but it is very authentic. Be sure to find out if the port is open and what time it closes before you head out. On the drive back, I played the folk songs they sang in the car and hummed along the whole way. I didn't remember a single word of the lyrics, but I remembered the tune.

The mountain ridge road winds like a giant dragon's spine, flanked by jagged rocks, offering a magnificent panoramic view. Along the way, you'll encounter sinkholes, karst caves, canyons, and unique rock formations. The stone forest is dense, with a new scene at every step. The summer average temperature is around 20°C, making it a perfect summer retreat. Few tourists visit, and the scenery is wild and pristine, allowing you to enjoy the tranquility of the entire mountain wilderness. From the summit, overlooking the mountains shrouded in mist feels like a fairyland. 2. Western Sichuan - Gnie South Route This crossing route from Litang to Batang is covered with blooming flowers from June to August. The grass is green, flowers are abundant, and the temperature is comfortable, with clear views of snow-capped mountains. The Eye of Gnie has collected water, reflecting the snowy peaks on its surface. At the blacksmith mountain pass, snow peaks stand tall, and endless meadows stretch beneath the gray-white mountains. Lenggu Temple quietly faces the snow mountains, and the Reti River Valley is covered with flowers in summer, hiding a heart-shaped lake called the "Heart of Gnie." Zeba Village is like a fairy-tale village at the foot of the snow mountains, where the night sky is especially low, making it feel like you can reach out and touch the stars. 3. Shaanxi - Taiyang Highway The Taiyang Highway from Taibai County through Dalin Sea of Clouds, Huangbaiyuan, Huayang Ancient Town, to Yang County crosses the core area of the Qinling Mountains. You can see glaciers, seas of clouds, and magnificent rivers, and get up close to the dense and diverse vegetation of Qinling. Traveling this route lets you truly understand the Qinling ecosystem and experience the "north-south dividing line." The key section is about 140 kilometers. From Dalin Sea of Clouds, you can see snow-capped peaks in the distance, with mountain colors changing with elevation. The emerald creek in Dajian Valley sparkles with rainbows under the sunlight. The original forest at Walnut Flat breathes negative oxygen ions. The mountain rocks of Huangbaiyuan and the terraced fields of Erlangba are ever-changing beauties that can only be appreciated on the road. 4. Guangxi - Hena Expressway The expressway from Hepu to Napo is about 516 kilometers long, passing through Qinzhou, Shangsi, Chongzuo, Daxin, and Jingxi. It weaves through karst mountains and waters, and during the rainy season, the mist creates a fairyland on earth. The most beautiful section is from Chongzuo to Jingxi, with typical karst mountain and water countryside on both sides. Exiting the expressway, you can visit Detian Waterfall, Mingshi Countryside, Dongna Yuwan, Tongling Grand Canyon, and Huashan Rock Paintings. 5. Qinghai - Qilian No. 9 Highway The core section is the G213 National Road from Sunan County to Qilian County, about 150 kilometers. Snow mountains, grasslands, Danxia landforms, roads, mountains, and flowing water create a picturesque scene. From Sunan to the Erga Road junction to Yeniu Valley Township to Qilian, the grasslands are lush green from June to August, wildflowers bloom, and rapeseed flowers turn golden. The endless road stretches straight to the foot of the snow mountains, meadows extend to the horizon, herds of yaks leisurely wander by, and the distant snow mountains shine dazzlingly white. There are many free viewing platforms along the way, with the year-round snow-capped Qilian peaks as a backdrop, half surrounded by vast wilderness. 6. Western Sichuan - Ganbai Road The scenic highway between Ganzi County and Baiyu County passes through the Zhuodala Snow Mountain range, Lalongcuo Lake, and Yaqing Temple. Snow mountains, lakes, and vast wilderness unfold outside the car window, and the crossing can be completed in about a day. Yaqing Temple is similar to Seda, with red walls and golden roofs surrounded by countless small red houses, home to many female practitioners. The Changqu River flows around Yaqing Temple, forming an island. From the viewing platform, it truly feels like a sacred place. Lalongcuo, also known as the "Spiritual Lake," features magnificent wetland landscapes and unique ancient glacial drift relics. From the lake to the marsh, the layers are distinct, with snow mountains reflected in the water and light and shadow interplaying. Napo Black-Clothed Zhuang Village Family Trip! Explore Black-Clothed Zhuang Culture with Kids, Weaving Zhuang Brocade is Super Fun — traveler post in Napo

Napo Black-Clothed Zhuang Village Family Trip! Explore Black-Clothed Zhuang Culture with Kids, Weaving Zhuang Brocade is Super Fun

Take the kids to Napo Black-Clothed Zhuang Village, where they see for the first time an entire ethnic group dressed in black clothing. The child curiously asks, "Why do they all wear black clothes?"! A 3-day itinerary where kids learn to weave Zhuang brocade, sing Zhuang songs, and eat Zhuang cuisine. This guide helps you unlock the unique ethnic charm with your kids~ 🖤 Must-Experience Black-Clothed Zhuang Features (Family-Friendly) Learn to Weave Zhuang Brocade (1 hour): At the "Zhuang Brocade Experience Hall," Black-Clothed Zhuang aunties teach kids how to weave Zhuang brocade! First, they tell the story of Zhuang brocade ("This is a craft passed down from Black-Clothed Zhuang grandmothers, weaving beautiful patterns with colorful threads"), then teach kids to use a simple loom to weave basic patterns (like small flowers or stars). Kids hold the small shuttle, slowly threading the yarn. Although slow, they are very focused. The finished small Zhuang brocade can be made into a small wallet (free zipper included). The kids use it every day to hold their pocket money. Wear Black-Clothed Zhuang Costumes: Choose mini versions of the Black-Clothed Zhuang costumes (sizes for ages 1-10), black tops + black pants (skirts for girls), plus silver headpieces and belts! After dressing up, the Black-Clothed Zhuang aunties help tidy up and teach kids the "Zhuang etiquette" (hands clasped, slight bow). The photos taken are very distinctive. Experience fee is 30 RMB per person, including costume and photo guidance. Listen to Black-Clothed Zhuang Mountain Songs: Every day at 10 AM and 3 PM in the village square, Black-Clothed Zhuang grandpas sing mountain songs (in Zhuang language with Mandarin translation). The lyrics are about life and nature, very beautiful! Grandpa also teaches kids simple mountain songs (like "Sister picking tea busily, song floats over the mountain"). Kids hum along, off-key but super cute, and grandpa applauds them. 🏡 Accommodation Recommendations (Family-Friendly) We chose the "Black-Clothed Zhuang Style Homestay," run by a Black-Clothed Zhuang family. The rooms are decorated with Black-Clothed Zhuang elements (Zhuang brocade murals, black wood carvings). The owner prepared "Black-Clothed Zhuang small gifts" for the kids (Zhuang brocade pendants, 15 RMB each). In the evening, in the homestay courtyard, the owner plays "Zhuang ethnic small games" with the kids (like "throwing embroidered balls," tossing colorful embroidered balls into small baskets, with small snacks as prizes). 🍜 Must-Try Black-Clothed Zhuang Food (Authentic) Black-Clothed Zhuang Sour Meat: Pork marinated into sour meat, stir-fried with green peppers, sour and salty, very appetizing. Give kids a small amount (a bit sour). Served with white rice, kids can eat about half a bowl. Zhuang Sticky Rice: "Colorful sticky rice" made with black, red, and yellow glutinous rice, wrapped in leaves, sweet and delicious. Kids love it and ask, "Why is the sticky rice colorful?" (You can explain, "The colors come from plant dyes, very safe"). Corn Porridge: Free corn porridge provided by the homestay in the morning, cooked thick with a little salt. Kids can drink a bowl, warm and soothing for the stomach. 🚗 Transportation & Tickets Transportation: It takes 50 minutes by car from Napo County to Black-Clothed Zhuang Village. The mountain road is a bit winding, so remember to prepare motion sickness patches for the kids. There is also a shuttle bus from the county (15 RMB per person, kids free, 3 trips daily). Tickets: Free! Experience activities (weaving brocade, wearing costumes) require payment, prices are transparent with no hidden fees. 💡 Tips for Traveling with Kids Do cultural prep in advance: Show kids a short video about the Black-Clothed Zhuang (about 5 minutes), telling them "This is an ethnic group that likes to wear black clothes and has many amazing crafts," to build anticipation. Bring a small notebook: Let kids draw the Zhuang brocade patterns they learn and the mountain song lyrics they hear, making a "Black-Clothed Zhuang journal," which is very meaningful. Respect local customs: Tell kids "Don't touch the Black-Clothed Zhuang aunties' headpieces casually, and listen carefully when they sing," to cultivate respect. After 3 days, the kid said, "The Black-Clothed Zhuang grandmothers are amazing, they can weave such beautiful Zhuang brocade"~ This kind of trip that lets kids experience a lesser-known ethnic culture really broadens their horizons. Highly recommend it to families wanting to feel a different ethnic vibe with their kids!

Napo Heiyi Zhuang Folk Customs Park

It is not very convenient to get from Jingxi to Heiyizhuang. The whole village is mostly populated by elderly people and children, and young people are rarely seen. There are low houses everywhere.

Detian Transnational Waterfall Scenic Spot

The grandeur of Detian is undeniable, but preparation is key before you set off. During the high-water season, the scenery is breathtaking, but during the dry season, the water flow becomes much thinner, significantly diminishing the spectacle. A shuttle bus is required to reach the entrance; the entire trail has many steps, so the elderly and children are advised to slow down. Bamboo rafting is the core experience, but it may be temporarily suspended in case of heavy rain. Recommended Route: Bamboo Rafting → Viewing Boardwalk → Climbing Platform, and finally, a photo at the boundary marker. This route connects Detian and Mingshi Pastoral Area, offering a beautiful blend of mountains and water—this is the most classic journey in southwestern Guangxi.

Qingxiu Mountain

It's quite nice to stroll around here on a weekday during the off-season, although the plants aren't as green. The park is very large; it would probably take a whole day to see everything. I bought a 5 yuan sightseeing bus ticket and took a 20-minute ride around the north gate, which was pretty good.

Stone Forest Scenic Area

The service staff were very friendly, as were the Yunnan Tourism Bureau and the staff at the Yunnan Ethnic Village. They even provided companionship for an 80-year-old, and at the Stone Forest, my 85-year-old mother didn't need to pay for the shuttle bus. Thank you to the Yunnan Tourism Bureau!

Libo Xiaoqikong Scenic Area

Choosing to enter and exit from the East Gate offers a high-value option, allowing you to visit attractions along the way such as the Xiaoqikong Ancient Bridge, Laya Waterfall, Cuigu Waterfall, Yuanyang Lake, and Wolongtan. On a sunny day, each scenic spot is perfect for taking photos, giving you the feeling of "walking in a painting." It truly deserves to be called "the emerald on the Earth's belt."

Goose Spring Scenic Area

Goose Spring is definitely worth a visit. My husband and I drove there ourselves and bought our tickets online at a reasonable price. After entering the scenic area, we didn't take a bamboo raft. We just walked along the path, enjoying the beautiful scenery. The scenery was stunning and captivating; the distant mountains and water views were breathtaking and perfect for taking photos.

Dongfengyun Scenic Area

It's nice for taking photos and checking in, but not so much for leisurely sightseeing. A few of the exhibition halls were quite nice. What I don't understand is that the shuttle bus is still a gasoline-powered vehicle, and there was a really unpleasant smell in the back.
