UK Norfolk Broads: How Hill to Hickling Broad Reed Bed Boardwalk — traveler post in Norfolk

UK Norfolk Broads: How Hill to Hickling Broad Reed Bed Boardwalk

#arrivalguide #ArrivalGuide #NorfolkBroads #HowHill The Broads aren’t lakes—they’re medieval peat diggings flooded by sea-level rise, and the How Hill–Hickling stretch is the quietest corner. I arrived at How Hill nature reserve (postcode NR29 5PG area) by bus from Norwich to Ludham, then 2 km walk. Day ticket for the reserve is £4.50 dropped in an honesty box (cash preferred, but they have a card reader in the toilet block). The trail starts through mixed woodland, then a 1.2 km boardwalk cuts straight into the reedbed (Phragmites australis, 3 m tall, rustling like rain). Mid-boardwalk there’s a hide overlooking Turf Fen mill—a derelict windpump I photographed for 20 minutes with a bittern calling somewhere I never saw. Continue to Hickling Broad (another 3 km, partly on grass dyke paths); the Hickling visitor centre charges £5 entry if you want the tower hide, otherwise the public right-of-way along the southern shore is free. I paddled a hired canoe from How Hill to Hickling instead of walking back—£18 for 3 hours, book at the boathouse. Mosquitoes here are savage in July; DEET is not optional. A mistake: I wore canvas shoes and the dyke path squelched water over the rim—wellies or closed trail shoes only. No shops between How Hill and Hickling, carry water and a sandwich. Discussion: does a flat reed-boardwalk count as “wild” enough for mountain-loving travellers, or is its birdlife the real draw?

Hermitage Museum. — traveler post in Norfolk

Hermitage Museum.

The Hermitage Museum is one of the largest and most renowned art museums in the world. Located in the Winter Palace in the heart of St. Petersburg, Russia, it houses an astonishing collection of over 3 million artworks and antiquities from various civilizations. Spanning from ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome to masterpieces by world-class artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, and Picasso, it's an absolute must-visit for art and history enthusiasts. As you step into the museum, you'll be captivated by the grandeur of its interior architecture. From the sweeping marble staircases and exhibition halls adorned with golden chandeliers to the exquisitely detailed ceilings, the rooms still radiate the opulence of the Romanov dynasty. Every corner of the museum is so breathtakingly beautiful that it feels like walking through a living palace, all while getting the chance to admire rare, world-renowned masterpieces. Given its massive exhibition space, it's highly recommended to set aside at least 3 to 5 hours for your visit—or even a full day if you want to explore it in depth. Additionally, booking your tickets in advance is a smart move to skip the long lines, especially during the peak tourist season.
