Deep in the Balkans, on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, lies a vast body of water surrounded by mountains—Lake Shkodër. As the largest lake in the Balkans, it straddles the border between Montenegro and Albania. · Although most travelogues about Lake Shkodër focused on the Albanian side when researching beforehand, the route from Budva to Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, passes by the lake, so we decided to include it in our itinerary. · From São Stephen's Island, it's about an hour's drive to the lakeside town of Verpazar. This quiet town still retains its Ottoman-era stone bridges and old houses. We arrived around lunchtime and randomly chose a restaurant to try the local smoked lake fish, which was surprisingly delicious—fresh, tender, and juicy. · There's a Lake Shkodër Visitor Center in town where you can learn more about the lake. This is actually a lake that pulsates between 370 and 530 square kilometers depending on the season. Six major rivers flow into it, with its only outlet being the Boyana River, which flows into the Adriatic Sea. Scattered throughout the lake are over fifty small islands, almost each bearing the ruins of a medieval monastery or fortress, like islands isolated in time. · However, because we hadn't done detailed research beforehand, we only marked the viewpoints near the town on Google Maps. So, after lunch, we continued driving along the lakeside road to visit these viewpoints. There are actually many boat tours available in town, but we didn't consider them due to time constraints. · The first stop was Bessac Fortress, located on the mountain behind Verpazak, considered a high point near Lake Shkodër. The fortress has now been converted into a winery and restaurant, but it remains a great viewpoint overlooking Lake Shkodër. Although the sunlight isn't particularly bright, you can still see the different shades of blue in the lake. This blue is different from the Adriatic blue; it's more serene, more introspective, imbued with the understated elegance of the mountains. The distant mountains and islands reveal the textures of the stone in the light, as if time itself slows down here. · Continuing along the southern ring road, the mountain road gradually winds its way through the lake. The road conditions are average, and there are two viewpoints along the way. The viewpoint above Pjesacac Beach offers a better view, overlooking Grmozur Island in the lake and the Grmozur fortress built during the Ottoman Empire. · Afterwards, return to Verpazak and continue along the western ring road towards Podgorica. Along the way, you'll cross the Shkodër Bridge; the scenery on both sides of the lake reminds me a bit of Puzhehei (a famous lake in Taiwan). After crossing the bridge, Fort Lesendro, an 18th-century castle now in ruins, is worth a stop. Its beauty, a blend of ruins and the surrounding lake view, would be perfect with a drone. Overall, Lake Skoda's scenery isn't particularly stunning, but it's worth a visit if you're passing through; otherwise, it's not worth making a special trip for.

Imagine gliding across brilliant turquoise water while towering green mountains rise on both sides, creating a landscape that feels like a secret fjord hidden in the heart of Europe. Welcome to Koman Lake, Albania, one of the Balkans’ most breathtaking destinations. Surrounded by steep cliffs, lush forests, and remote mountain villages, this extraordinary reservoir is famous for its spectacular ferry journey through narrow waterways. The scenery is so dramatic that many travelers compare it to Norway’s fjords, yet Koman Lake offers its own distinctive charm. If you love peaceful boat rides, dramatic landscapes, photography, and discovering destinations beyond the usual European tourist trail, Koman Lake belongs on your travel bucket list. 🌿 Why Is Koman Lake So Special? Located in northern Albania, Koman Lake was formed by the damming of the Drin River. Today, its winding waterways stretch between steep mountain slopes, creating a landscape of emerald-green forests and deep blue water. The lake is best known for the ferry journey between Koman and Fierzë, which provides access to the remote Valbona Valley region and forms part of a popular route for travelers exploring the Albanian Alps. Unlike crowded coastal resorts, this destination offers a quieter kind of adventure. The main attraction is simply being surrounded by nature, watching the landscape change as your boat travels deeper into the mountains. 📸 Top Experiences You Shouldn't Miss 1. Take the Scenic Ferry Ride The ferry crossing is the highlight of a visit to Koman Lake. As the boat moves through the narrow channels, towering cliffs rise above the water and forested slopes reflect in shades of green and blue. Every bend reveals another beautiful view. Choose a seat with an open view of the landscape, keep your camera ready, and enjoy the journey rather than rushing to the next destination. Travel tip: Ferry schedules can change seasonally, so confirm departure times and vehicle arrangements before traveling. 2. Capture the Turquoise Waters Koman Lake is famous for its vivid water colors, which can range from deep blue to bright turquoise depending on the light, weather, and season. The contrast between the water and the surrounding mountains creates outstanding photography opportunities. Early departures may offer beautiful soft light, while sunny conditions can make the water appear especially vibrant. Remember that water color changes naturally, so photographs may look different from one day to another. 3. Explore the Albanian Alps Koman Lake can be part of a larger adventure through northern Albania's spectacular mountain region. Many travelers combine the ferry crossing with a visit to Valbona Valley National Park, where hiking trails pass through alpine meadows, traditional settlements, and rugged mountain scenery. For a more challenging trip, some visitors continue toward Theth and undertake the well-known Valbona–Theth hiking route. This requires additional planning and should not be treated as a casual extension of the ferry ride. 4. Discover the Peaceful Shoreline Away from the busiest departure points, the surrounding landscape feels remarkably tranquil. Small settlements, wooded slopes, and isolated stretches of shoreline reveal a quieter side of Albania. If you have extra time, arrange a local excursion where access is permitted rather than assuming every part of the shoreline is reachable by road. The combination of mountains and water makes even a simple pause to enjoy the view worthwhile. 5. Experience Local Albanian Hospitality A trip to Koman Lake can introduce you to the welcoming culture of northern Albania. Depending on your itinerary, stop in nearby towns or mountain villages to enjoy traditional Albanian dishes, fresh local ingredients, and warm hospitality. Simple meals and conversations with local hosts can become some of the most memorable parts of the journey. 🗓️ Best Time to Visit Koman Lake Late spring through early autumn is generally the most convenient period for visiting Koman Lake and exploring the surrounding mountains. · April–May: Spring greenery begins to flourish, although weather and transport schedules can be variable. · June–August: A popular period for ferry trips, mountain excursions, and longer daylight hours. · September: Pleasant conditions are often possible, with a quieter atmosphere after the busiest summer period. · October onward: Cooler weather and reduced seasonal services may affect transport and outdoor plans. Always check current ferry schedules and local weather conditions before departure. Mountain weather can change quickly, even during summer. 🎒 Essential Travel Tips Plan your transport carefully: Koman is remote compared with Albania's major cities. Arrange how you'll reach the ferry terminal and continue to your next destination. Book ferry tickets in advance: Services can be busy during peak travel periods, especially when travelers bring vehicles. Bring layers: Conditions on the water may feel cooler or windier than expected, even on a sunny day. Carry cash: Some local services may have limited card-payment options, particularly in rural areas. Allow extra time: Road journeys in northern Albania can take longer than expected. Avoid scheduling tight connections after your ferry crossing. Respect the environment: Take your rubbish with you, follow local guidance, and avoid disturbing wildlife or fragile shorelines. Prepare for mountain hikes: If continuing to Valbona or Theth, bring suitable footwear, enough water, and clothing appropriate for changing alpine conditions. 💙 Why Koman Lake Belongs on Your Travel Bucket List Koman Lake is proof that some of Europe's most memorable travel experiences happen far from its famous capitals. Here, the journey itself is the attraction. Towering mountains frame the water, remote villages appear between wooded slopes, and every turn of the ferry route reveals a new perspective on Albania's extraordinary natural beauty. Whether you visit for a day trip or include it in a longer adventure through the Albanian Alps, Koman Lake offers a refreshing combination of scenery, serenity, and discovery. 📍 Destination: Koman Lake, northern Albania 💙 Best for: Scenic boat rides, nature photography, mountain adventures, and peaceful escapes 📅 Suggested stay: One day for the ferry experience, or 2–4 days when combining it with the Albanian Alps ✨ Travel inspiration: Add Koman Lake to your European itinerary and discover a destination where turquoise water meets dramatic mountain scenery. If you're a history buff or a fan of off-the-beaten-path destinations, Shkodër, Albania, is a hidden gem that will truly surprise you! Separated from the border of Montenegro by a single river, this city offers the serene elegance of its natural rivers and lakes, alongside the magnificent, thousand-year-old Rozafa Castle. Stepping into the castle feels like wandering through a thick history book, where every stone wall echoes stories of the past. If you love exploring grand ruins and taking in sweeping views of cities and waterways, this will undoubtedly be the highlight of your trip! Rozafa Castle: Recommended Experience Perched on a hill at the entrance of Shkodër and surrounded by the Buna and Drin rivers, Rozafa Castle’s location was historically impregnable. It’s no wonder that since its construction in the 4th–3rd century BC, it was successively occupied and fortified by the Romans, Venetians, and the Ottoman Empire. As you enter, you’ll find yourself surrounded by sprawling ruins and ancient cobblestone paths—each step is steeped in history. Don’t miss the highest viewpoint in the castle! From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Shkodër, the distant lake, and the spectacular confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers. Visiting at dawn or dusk is an incredibly healing experience, as the glow of the sky meets the tranquility of the city—perfect for quiet contemplation or capturing stunning photos. 📸 Note that the path is quite steep and the ground is uneven, so be careful when walking. If you enjoy local lore, look up the 'Legend of Rozafa'—the story of a woman’s sacrifice that supposedly keeps the fortress standing to this day. It adds a layer of mystery to your mountain adventure. The castle also houses a small museum (mostly in Albanian), which provides a fascinating glimpse into the legendary history of this Balkan nation. Practical Tips 1. There are no elevators or ramps inside, so it’s not very accessible for those with mobility issues. 2. Nearby attractions like Lake Shkodër and Mesi Bridge are also worth a visit! Transportation Guide: It’s just a 10-minute walk or a short taxi ride from Shkodër city center to Rozafa Castle. Walking allows you to cross the iconic bridge over the Buna River and soak in the authentic local atmosphere.

Imagine waking up in a quiet seaside village, enjoying breakfast overlooking turquoise water, and spending the afternoon exploring ancient stone streets beneath the mountains. As the sun sets, the coastline glows in golden light, and the sound of the Mediterranean follows you into the evening. Welcome to Albania—a fascinating Balkan country where spectacular beaches, historic towns, mountain landscapes, and traditional hospitality come together. For travelers dreaming of a European escape with beautiful coastlines, rich culture, and plenty of opportunities for adventure, Albania deserves a place on the bucket list. 🌍 Why Visit Albania? Located in southeastern Europe, Albania offers an impressive variety of experiences within a relatively small country. You can swim in the Ionian Sea, explore Ottoman-era towns, hike through dramatic mountains, and discover archaeological sites that tell stories spanning thousands of years. The country has become increasingly popular with travelers, but many inland villages and lesser-known coastal areas still offer a quieter experience away from the busiest summer hotspots. It’s a wonderful destination for backpackers, couples, road-trip lovers, and anyone who wants to combine beach time with cultural exploration. 📍 Five Incredible Places to Explore 1. Ksamil — Turquoise Waters and Tiny Islands Ksamil is famous for its clear turquoise water, small offshore islands, and beautiful coastal scenery. Gjirokastër — The Stone City Gjirokastër is a UNESCO-listed historic city known for its stone-roofed houses, cobbled streets, and impressive hilltop castle. Walk through the old bazaar, explore traditional architecture, and enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding valley. It’s a wonderful place to experience Albania’s history beyond its beaches. 3. Theth is surrounded by rugged peaks, traditional stone houses, forests, and dramatic valleys. Popular outdoor experiences include hiking to the Blue Eye of Theth and visiting the Grunas Waterfall. Spend your days swimming, discovering nearby coves, or simply enjoying a slow evening beside the sea. 🏛️ Discover Albania’s Rich History Albania’s story reflects centuries of Mediterranean and Balkan influences. Ancient Greek and Roman remains, Byzantine churches, Ottoman architecture, and traditional mountain communities all contribute to its cultural identity. Visit Butrint, an important archaeological site surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, to explore ruins from different historical periods. In historic towns, take time to appreciate local crafts, traditional houses, and the everyday rhythms of community life. 🍽️ Taste the Flavours of Albania Albanian cuisine brings together Mediterranean freshness and Balkan comfort food. Try byrek, a savoury pastry with fillings such as cheese or spinach. Sample grilled vegetables, fresh seafood along the coast, traditional baked dishes, and regional desserts. In mountain areas, you may find hearty meals featuring seasonal ingredients and local cheeses. Small family-run restaurants are often wonderful places to discover regional flavours. If you have dietary restrictions, ask about ingredients and preparation methods before ordering. 🚗 The Perfect Destination for Slow Travel Albania is ideal for a road trip, particularly if you want to combine the coast with historic towns and mountain scenery. A relaxed eight-day itinerary could look like this: · Days 1–2: Explore Berat’s historic quarters and castle. · Days 3–4: Discover Gjirokastër and the archaeological site of Butrint. · Days 5–6: Relax along the Riviera around Himarë and nearby beaches. · Days 7–8: Enjoy Ksamil or return north with time for scenic stops. If hiking is your priority, plan a separate trip focused on Theth and the Albanian Alps. Combining remote mountain treks and the southern coast in a short holiday can involve substantial travel time. 🌤️ When Is the Best Time to Visit? May–June and September are excellent periods to consider for a balance of warm weather and fewer crowds. · April–May: Pleasant conditions for historic towns, countryside exploration, and hiking at suitable elevations. · June: Warm coastal weather before the busiest summer period. · July–August: Ideal for many beach holidays, but popular coastal areas can become crowded and hot. · September–October: Often a rewarding time for coastal exploration and cultural sightseeing, although some seasonal services may reduce their hours. Mountain weather differs from the coast, so plan hiking trips according to local forecasts and trail conditions. 💰 How to Explore Albania on a Budget Albania can offer good value compared with some other European coastal destinations, although popular resort areas may be expensive during peak summer. · Book accommodation early for July and August. · Stay in guesthouses or family-run accommodation. · Eat at local restaurants away from the busiest beachfront areas. · Use buses where routes and schedules suit your itinerary. · Compare rental-car costs and insurance conditions before booking. · Carry some cash, especially when visiting smaller communities. Always verify transport schedules and entry requirements before travelling. 📸 A Paradise for Travel Photography Albania offers an incredible variety of photography opportunities: turquoise bays, stone villages, mountain roads, historic castles, and colourful Mediterranean sunsets. Visit popular beaches early to capture quieter scenes. In Berat and Gjirokastër, photograph the traditional architecture from elevated viewpoints, and allow time to explore smaller streets. Your actual costs will depend on the season, accommodation style, and how much you move around. 🍽️ What Should You Eat? Albanian food reflects its Mediterranean and Balkan influences. 🥧 Byrek: A flaky pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or other ingredients. 🍲 Tavë kosi: A traditional baked dish made with lamb and yoghurt. 🐟 Fresh seafood: Especially appealing along the Ionian coast. ☕ Albanian coffee culture: Take your time at a local café and enjoy watching everyday life unfold. A car offers flexibility for remote areas. Money: Albania uses the Albanian lek (ALL). Check current exchange rates and fees before exchanging money. Entry requirements: Visa rules depend on your passport and circumstances. It’s for the curious traveller who enjoys discovering places before they become the next big trend. Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys aren’t to the places everyone already knows. They’re to the places that still have the power to surprise you. 📌 Save this guide for your future Balkan adventure, and share it with someone who would love to explore Albania with you. 💬 Your turn: Would you choose Albania’s turquoise beaches in Ksamil or the dramatic hiking trails of Theth? Good signal coverage in mountainous areas is important in October to avoid losing contact. 🔌 Don't forget a European power adapter. Albania uses Type C/F plugs, so bring a few extra to charge your electronic devices. 🧥 It's cool in Albania in October, especially in the mornings and evenings. Bring a light down jacket, a windbreaker, and a few quick-dry long-sleeve T-shirts. 🎒 Carry a small backpack for your sun hat, sunglasses, and a portable water bottle—useful for staying hydrated and taking photos at attractions. 🧰 Carry stomach medicine, cold medicine, and Band-Aids, as the changes in diet and temperature during multi-country travel can easily cause discomfort. / Ready to experience this for yourself? Planning a trip to Albania? Here’s the route I took to explore this beautiful and surprisingly diverse country, from historic cities to incredible beaches! 📍 Shkodër – Start in northern Albania, exploring the charming city and beautiful Lake Shkodër. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon by the water. The lake is great for hikes and bird-watching. Tourists will often stay overnight. 📍 Tirana – Albania’s lively capital! Explore the colourful streets, historic landmarks, quirky cafés and fascinating communist history. 📍 Gjirokastër – One of my favourite stops! This UNESCO-listed stone city is full of cobbled streets, Ottoman architecture, a magnificent castle and a secret Cold War tunnel. 📍 Blue Eye – Stop at this incredible natural spring on your way to Ksamil. The unbelievably clear turquoise water is beautiful! You might see others getting into the water, but it is actually forbidden! 📍 Ksamil – Time for some beach relaxation! Think turquoise water, white sand and little islands just offshore. You can also visit the Greek island of Corfu on a day trip, taking the ferry from nearby Sarandë. As well as this, there is the opportunity to head further south and see an ancient Roman town! 📍 Himarë – A beautiful coastal town with a more relaxed atmosphere. Don’t miss a boat trip along the Albanian Riviera, stopping at hidden beaches and the spectacular Blue Cave! It was definitely the highlight of my trip! The tour usually involving stopping at several beaches along the way too. It cost around £25. 📍 Vlorë – Finish your trip somewhere that combines city life with a beach holiday! Explore the colourful Old Town, stroll along the waterfront and enjoy the restaurants and cafés. My top tip: Don’t just visit the Albanian Riviera! The historic towns and inland landscapes are just as impressive as the beaches. #Albania #AlbanianRiviera #Ksamil #Gjirokaster #Himare #BalkansTravel #myitinerary
