Must-Visit Districts in Shanghai

Whether you’re in the mood to relax or want to feel the energy of the city, you’ll find that Shanghai’s distinct neighbourhoods offer a little something for everyone. From colonial-era waterfronts to luxury malls, the city’s districts have their own unique vibes, attractions and take on local cuisine.

The Bund: Shanghai’s historical waterfront

The Bund

Located on the Western bank of the Huangpu River, The Bund offers a unique blend of old and new. You’ll find colonial-era buildings looking onto nearby Pudong’s dramatic skyline, making this a great area for a gentle riverside walk. You can even take to the river cruise for a sightseeing cruise. There are plenty of waterfront cafes along the promenade to relax in and enjoy a cup of coffee, as well as trendy rooftop bars for when the city lights come on.

The Former French Concession: Shanghai’s historic tree-lined district

Wukang Building

Dating back to the 19th-Century, the Former French Concession is nowadays best known for its trendy cafes, boutique shops, and relaxed, creative atmosphere. Here, you’ll find colonial architecture from the time the area was under French control. Think Art Deco influences and picturesque tree-lined streets. A perfect place to while away an afternoon, with parks to explore and local eateries to pop into.

Lujiazui: Shanghai’s ultra-modern architecture

Lujiazui

The city’s financial and commercial district, Lujiazui in Pudong, is what comes to mind when you think of 21st-century Shanghai. With skyscrapers and high-end malls, this ultra-modern area is a true sight to behold. Famous sky-high architecture includes the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai Tower, both offering observation decks for panoramic city views. For those who don’t have a head for heights, the family-friendly Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is just around the corner.

Jing’An: Authentic Shanghai Lifestyle

Jingan Temple

Located in central Shanghai, the Jing'An district is where old meets me. Named after the Buddhist Jing’an Temple, find a fascinating mixture of 1920s-30s architecture to modern-day high-rises. If you're looking for a spot of shopping, Jing'An is the place to go. For all things luxury, head to the Plaza 66 and Jing’an Kerry Centre malls, and explore the Anyi Road markets over the weekends.

Location: Great, right on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, very convenient for guests to explore on their own without needing to be guided all day. Ambiance: It seems to be an older hotel with a rather fancy, old-fashioned decor, not very modern. Service: It would be better if the lobby had a more formal and free waiting area for guests. Courier service convenience: Yes, there's a dedicated spot for packages, which was handy as I sent out many samples. Picking them up was quite easy. There are too few places to work on the first floor, only two tables, and one was already reserved. Very limited options, and the other seating wasn't suitable for laptop use. The room is better suited for working, though.

Radisson Blu New World Hotel was absolutely wonderful. I especially want to highlight Judy at the reception—she was incredibly kind, attentive and made my experience truly memorable. If I visit Shanghai again, I will definitely stay here because of her warm hospitality. The view was amazing and the location couldn’t have been better.

Train Station Area Shanghai|2.4km from city centre
This was my first time staying at this hotel, and here's a summary of the pros: 1. The hotel's location is incredibly convenient. You can step right out and catch Metro Lines 1, 3, or 4, and be in the bustling city center within a few stops. If you have heavy luggage, you can use the accessible elevator across the street at the express hotel to enter and exit the station. 2. The hotel is close to Shanghai Railway Station, with many fast-food restaurants and convenience stores nearby, making shopping and quick meals very easy. However, there were also some drawbacks: 1. The room cleaning was not thorough enough, especially the bedside table which had a noticeable layer of dust. It felt quite unpleasant. 2. I encountered cleaning staff in the elevator, management on my floor, and restaurant staff, but none of them greeted me. The service lacked basic courtesy. 3. The restaurant is located in the innermost part of the first floor, which already has poor natural light, and the lighting during meals was also dim, which negatively impacted the dining experience. 4. Restaurant management seemed lax; they didn't discourage guests from dining in room slippers or even bathrobes. 5. During breakfast, items like cheese and ham were placed on the same platter as fruit, which was an illogical arrangement. Getting items like corn required reaching over nine condiment dishes, which was both inconvenient and unhygienic. Overall, my experience during this stay was not very satisfactory.

Stayed one night at the Garden Hotel during the ***** New Year. Usually, it's around 600-700 RMB, but for CNY it was nearly 1000 RMB due to the premium. I wanted to experience staying in a historic building in Shanghai, and the Garden Hotel seems to be a relatively good value for money. The location is excellent; it has a large garden in such a prime area. You can easily walk to Huaihai Road and Fuxing Road. The service was also superb. It's rare to ask for one item from room service and have them bring a whole bunch of things [crying emoji], I was pleasantly surprised, especially since the hotel was fully booked during the ***** New Year. Thumbs up! Aside from the room being a bit small and dated, the toilet was the common smart type. Breakfast was Japanese style, which I wasn't quite used to. Even with a full house during CNY, there was a queue, but the efficiency was high, and you didn't have to wait long. Considering the location and service, I would likely choose this hotel again next time.

A tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. The location is excellent: very close to Yuyuan Garden Metro Station Exit 7. It's also within walking distance to the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, and Jinling East Road Ferry Terminal. The Huangpu River cruise included in the package was fantastic; we enjoyed an hour of beautiful scenery from the boat. The hotel entrance is beautifully designed, and as soon as we arrived, the doorman proactively helped us with our luggage and escorted us to the elevator. The room was clean and tidy, with views of both the historic buildings along the Bund and the modern skyline of Lujiazui. It's a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city, and our whole family slept soundly. The breakfast offered a great variety of both Chinese and Western dishes, and the made-to-order noodle station was particularly outstanding. They even offer a sweet soup in the evening, and the mini-bar in the room was well-stocked. The attention to detail is truly impressive. I'll definitely stay here again on my next visit to Shanghai.

Choosing this hotel was definitely the right decision. Its biggest advantage is the location, being so close to the Bund, which made planning our itinerary incredibly convenient. The room was very clean, and all the essential amenities were provided, ensuring a comfortable stay. The gym and laundry facilities on the fourth floor were a great bonus, adding a lot of convenience to our trip, and we used them frequently. The front desk team deserves praise for their quick responses and excellent attitude. Overall, the hotel performed consistently well in all key areas, offering great value for money.

Huge thanks to the hotel for arranging my preferred room – it was actually the exact same one I stayed in last Chinese New Year! What a lucky number, 1818. The front desk staff was so attentive and patient. And Xiaoqian, the attendant on the 18th floor, remembered all my habits from last year! She made sure the room was spotless and beautifully arranged every day, making it truly feel like home. The lion dance on the first day of the New Year was a real highlight. Even though the breakfast restaurant was crowded during the CNY period, the service was much faster than last year. This is, as always, my absolute favorite hotel. See you next time! ^_^

Facilities: The bathroom sink wasn't very practical; water splashed everywhere easily. Environment: The breakfast area and lobby bar are shared and quite small. Service: The hotel service was really good. The front desk staff, especially Loretta, were very professional. She deserves a huge commendation – even on her days off, she'd message me to say I could reach out to her anytime if I needed anything. The concierge service was also excellent, promptly anticipating guests' needs, making both check-in and check-out very smooth. Housekeeping was great too; turndown service was always done by the time I returned to my room. Breakfast is a crucial indicator of a hotel's quality, reflecting its attention to detail and standards through its offerings and quality control. After I spoke with the hotel, there was an improvement the next day. The bakery items were truly outstanding; the pastries were perfectly flaky, and both the pancakes and waffles were delicious. The fried dishes also had a great texture.

The service was excellent. They called me in advance to offer a room upgrade and added a complimentary breakfast as a member benefit. However, the facilities are a bit old. The room temperature was consistently high, so I had to keep the AC on to be comfortable. The Dyson hairdryer also overheated easily. The location is fantastic; you can walk to The Bund, Nanjing Road, and Yu Garden. Hotel parking is free, and my child enjoyed the swimming pool.

Lujiazui Area Shanghai|2.51km from city centre
Pros: 1. **Location:** Excellent. Situated by the Huangpu River in Lujiazui, it's a short walk to Super Brand Mall, the Riverside Promenade, and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. It's also close to Metro Line 2, making taxis and ferries easily accessible. IFC is right across the street. 2. **Breakfast Variety:** Offers a wide selection of Chinese and Western dishes, with particularly tasty bread. Cons: **Check-in Issues:** The check-in process was far from smooth and frankly, a terrible experience. The doorman service seemed to depend on who was on duty. On the day we arrived, perhaps due to the rain, there was no service at all, though it improved over the following days. We arrived at 4 PM that afternoon, and one of our rooms still wasn't ready. We were told it would take an estimated 20 minutes to clean, but we didn't get into the room until after 5 PM. **Dated Facilities & Housekeeping:** The hardware feels a bit old. Cleanliness was just okay; for example, the bathtub didn't have a disposable liner. The shampoo and shower gel were in large, communal bottles, and the quality wasn't great. **Subpar Housekeeping:** Housekeeping only made the beds and changed towels. All our clothes were left piled on the sofa, not neatly folded, and the tables weren't tidied. The bathroom toiletries were also left as is, without any organization. **Crowded Breakfast Experience:** During peak breakfast times, it gets very busy. Table clearing was incredibly slow, leading to a shortage of available seating.

For this spring break trip, we chose the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland. The hotel is a bit older, but it's very well-maintained. They proactively upgraded our room and even gave complimentary breakfast to our child. The mini-bar was also free. We also got some great shots from the travel photographer. I especially want to mention the bathroom mirror – the heating was excellent, so there was no fog at all, which shows great attention to detail. The full copper Hansgrohe fixtures truly show their quality through consistent use, and the pure white bathroom carpet made me feel right at home. The upgraded dinner package was so generous that the three of us couldn't even finish it. I highly recommend the Roasted Squab, Stir-fried Pea Shoots with Wuliangye, and the Caramel Pudding 🍮. The squab was crispy but not greasy, and the pea shoots had the fragrant aroma of Wuliangye and were incredibly tender – exactly to my liking 😜. The caramel pudding had a sweet caramel top layer, with the pudding underneath being just sweet enough, a perfect balance 😋. We left absolutely stuffed! I also want to give a special shout-out to our butler, Teresa, who provided service throughout our stay. She was meticulous and gentle, giving us timely reminders without ever making us feel disturbed. Teresa's service truly enhanced our experience at InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland. I believe we'll choose this hotel again next time and recommend it to our friends ❤️. P.S. The light and drone show at the Deep Pit was truly amazing – it left us with a 'wow' feeling 💗.

This hotel is perfectly suited to my taste. The lobby is predominantly decorated in black and red, with even the glass panels featuring a red tint. The lobby area is incredibly spacious, boasting many distinct seating zones, which made me feel like I could spend an entire day just lounging there. The hotel is conveniently located right next to a large shopping mall, MixC City, offering a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Plus, it's just a few subway stops from either the train station or the airport. Getting to the hotel from Ziteng Road Metro Station: exit and enter the shopping mall through its main illuminated entrance. For the most straightforward path, *before* you reach the pedestrian street of the metro commercial area, follow the signs to take the elevator up to the second floor. From there, walk through the parking lot between Buildings A and B, and you'll arrive directly at the hotel, with no stairs to navigate. Overall, I feel the hotel's marketing efforts are insufficient. This hidden gem truly deserves to be discovered by more people.

Nice little hotel, but not for me. It is located right next to Sam's Club and that's always nice. Being able to eat Sam's pizza and hot dogs is always nice. The bed, while big, was not comfortable to me. I know everyone has their preferences on softness levels. When I stay at a hotel, l like mattresses I melt into because they are soft. Not that way here. But I know some people prefer these mattresses. They had a restaurant and bar that looked nice, but I didn't visit as I had dinner and drinks with others not staying at hotel. The real deal breaker for me was no refrigerator in my room. Some rooms may have them. Mine did not (that I could find at least). When I stay at a hotel for more than one night, a refrigerator is a must, either for leftover food or cold drinks. Also, for a superior queen room, I think it said balcony or terrace and sofa, none of which my room had. And for garden view... Definitely not a pretty garden, more like a cement walkway and Sam's. And lastly, no room service... I know it's not advertised as having room service... But paying nearly 500rmb a night, just having a club sandwich or dumplings available late night would be nice. Maybe work out a deal with Sam's. Colleague stayed at a hotel less than 10 mins away that was cheaper, had a bathtub, had a late night menu, and had a refrigerator. Staff were great! Very helpful! If I go back to area, not sure if I would choose again. The access to Sam's is nice. I'd like to try out their bar and restaurant. But the no refrigerator scares me off a bit.

My stay at The Ritz-Carlton truly brought to life their core motto of 'We are Ladies and Gentlemen serving Ladies and Gentlemen.' I experienced firsthand how their brand principle, 'Our highest mission is to provide genuine care and comfort to our guests,' is woven into every service detail. A special shout-out to the Guest Recognition department for their professionalism and attentiveness, which made this stay a perfectly warm and respectful journey. From the moment I arrived, The Ritz-Carlton's 'Three Steps of Service' were seamlessly executed: the doorman's genuine greeting, calling me by name with warmth; the front desk's swift check-in, accurately noting my preferences; and throughout, there was no tedious waiting, just a pleasant feeling of being valued. During my stay, housekeeping proactively prepared my preferred pillow type, and the F&B department thoughtfully noted my dietary restrictions and customized meals. Staff consistently anticipated my needs and responded proactively, truly embodying the brand's commitment to 'fulfilling even the unexpressed wishes of our guests.' Every detail exuded the brand's 'warm, relaxed, and refined' ambiance, transforming luxury from cold hardware into tangible, thoughtful care. The exclusive service from the Guest Recognition team was a particularly delightful surprise, bringing the brand philosophy to life in a more concrete way. Before my arrival, the team communicated proactively about my itinerary needs, customizing travel suggestions that perfectly matched my plans. During my stay, they not only precisely recorded my personal preferences but also presented a handwritten card and custom dessert on my anniversary, turning an ordinary day into a memorable one with this exclusive touch of ceremony.

My son and I stayed in Shanghai for a few days during the Chinese New Year. I had dined at the Peace Hotel on a previous visit to Shanghai, so this time I decided to stay directly at the Fairmont, booking a king-size bed room. However, check-in took nearly two hours; we arrived at 3 PM and didn't get into our room until almost 5 PM. The room was not very big, and the window overlooked Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. We could see crowds of people below, and the night view was quite lively. The lobby was beautiful for photos, and breakfast was acceptable, though nothing special and with limited variety. When checking out, I tried to negotiate a late checkout with the front desk, but they would only allow an extra hour, no matter how much I tried to reason with them. I found it quite frustrating that we had to wait two hours to check in, but were only granted an extra hour for check-out. The front desk staff seemed very arrogant, and I didn't want to engage further.

Traveled with two kids. Arrived around 3 PM and there were no rooms available, probably due to it being spring break and fully booked. They assigned us a high-floor room and we went out to explore the Bund with the kids. When we came back, they gave us a corner room with a side view of the Oriental Pearl Tower. Although the front desk said it wasn't an 'Oriental Pearl view' and you couldn't see it head-on, it had everything we needed, and both kids were very happy. We slept in until almost 10 AM before going for breakfast. It was still very crowded and we had to queue for a few minutes, but despite the crowds, the food selection was quite comprehensive and the taste was excellent. Around 10:30 AM, staff even went table-to-table reminding guests that they were closing soon and to grab anything else they wanted in advance. All the staff we encountered were very helpful and accommodating, and check-out was also very smooth.

My family and I recently stayed at the Shanghai Agile Marriott Hotel City Centre while visiting Shanghai, and if I had to sum up my two-day experience in one word, it would be ”impeccable”! From the moment I stepped out of the car, I felt a warm and welcoming atmosphere. First and foremost, I must give a huge shout-out to Koi from the front desk! From the start, Koi greeted us with a sincere smile that instantly made us feel at ease. Not only was she highly efficient, but she was also incredibly attentive. We arrived a bit too early before our check-in time. Seeing that we had luggage and elderly parents with us, she quickly arranged a quiet room on a high floor near the lift for us. She also patiently explained the hotel's facilities and breakfast. Thanks to her enthusiastic service, our travel fatigue melted away, and our first impression of Shanghai couldn't have been better! As for the hotel itself, the location is absolutely superb! It's just a few minutes' walk to the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, and it’s incredibly convenient whether you want to go shopping or see the night view at the Bund. The room was pure Marriott quality – spacious, bright, with comfortable bedding, and a beautiful view of the bustling city skyline. Watching the lights of Shanghai at night from the window was a fantastic experience. The hotel facilities are also top-notch. The speed of hot water in the shower was instant, unlike many hotels where I had to wait a few seconds. Breakfast had a wide variety of choices, with both Chinese and Western dishes available, catering to all tastes. Overall, our stay was made even more memorable thanks to Koi's excellent service. There are many good hotels, but service with a personal touch is rare. We will definitely choose this hotel again on our next trip to Shanghai! I wish Koi all the best in her work and life!

This is an established hotel in Lujiazui, well-maintained with excellent service. They called me a day in advance and accommodated my request for an early check-in at 12 PM so my child could nap, which was fantastic! A definite thumbs-up. Our room faced the 'Three-piece Suit' (Lujiazui's iconic skyscrapers), and the light show on Shanghai Tower was beautiful. After check-in, a foreign staff member (I forgot her name, but she was lovely) escorted us to our room and even gave my child crayons and a drawing book, which made her very happy. Before dinner at 5 PM, this wonderful staff member took us to the outdoor viewing deck on the 58th floor to enjoy the scenery. Lujiazui, the Huangpu River, and the Bund opposite, all bathed in the sunset glow, were dreamlike and poetic – truly breathtaking. Breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes, both Chinese and Western, and the taste was superb. Enjoying a delicious breakfast while watching the Oriental Pearl Tower sparkle in the sunlight was such a joy. Even my 3-year-old said the hotel was beautiful and wants to come back again!

People's Square Shanghai|1.13km from city centre
I stayed at the Jinjiang Metropolo Hotel Classiq Shanghai Nanjing Road during the Chinese New Year holiday, and my overall experience was excellent. Both the location and service were outstanding, and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Shanghai. The hotel boasts a prime location, just a 10-minute walk along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street to the Bund and Yuxingji (People's Square branch). This made sightseeing and enjoying local cuisine incredibly convenient. It's also only a minute's walk from Nanjing East Road Metro Station, making it super easy to get around the city. Downstairs, there are plenty of specialty restaurants offering a wide variety of choices, making meals hassle-free. The hotel's buffet breakfast offered a rich selection and delicious food, catering to different tastes. My room was clean and tidy, with soft and comfortable bedding and excellent soundproofing, ensuring a high quality of rest. The front desk staff were warm and attentive. Check-in and check-out were efficient and quick, and they patiently answered all my questions, providing thoughtful and thorough service. With its fantastic location, convenient transportation, easy dining options, high standards of hygiene, and warm service, Jinjiang Metropolo Hotel Classiq Shanghai Nanjing Road is a high-value-for-money choice in downtown Shanghai. I will definitely stay here again on my next trip to Shanghai!

The Bund Area Shanghai|1.65km from city centre
The location is fantastic [heart][heart][heart]! There's a subway station nearby (Nanjing East Road Station), and it's an easy walk to the North Entrance of the Peace Hotel. It's also super convenient for getting a taxi from there. (Taxis and ride-shares can't enter the pedestrian street). The hotel is right in the Bund Center, making it easy to get anywhere. You can get a great shot of the Oriental Pearl Tower from every angle right outside the hotel entrance. The hotel is next to the Peace Hotel, but offers much better value for money. I booked two nights at ¥1042/night, which is relatively cheap for this location. The room is very spacious and comfortable, with a separate wet and dry area in the bathroom. Even though it's next to a commercial street, it's very quiet at night. Breakfast was also quite plentiful.

The Grand Hyatt Shanghai on the Bund was an absolutely perfect choice! The room was spacious and bright, elegantly furnished and very comfortable, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning night views of the Bund and Huangpu River. The hotel service was thoughtful and professional, making us feel right at home. The Grand Club breakfast was rich and varied, with excellent quality. The afternoon tea was exquisite and delicious, with meticulously prepared desserts and drinks. The evening cocktails offered an elegant atmosphere, perfect for unwinding. Whether for a business trip or a leisure vacation, this hotel provides an ultimate experience. Highly recommended!

Jing'an District Shanghai|0.85km from city centre
The hotel’s location is very good. It is about a 5-minute walk to a huge Starbucks, Nanjing West Road, the MRT station, and Wujiang Road, which has several nice bakeries and food options. This made getting around very convenient. There was also a 7-11 just across the road. However, the Premier Two-Bedroom Suite was disappointing for the price paid. The rooms are rather small, especially the master bedroom, where there was not enough space to place or open any luggage. We had to keep our luggage in the living room instead. The bathroom, particularly the shower area, looked very dated. The tiles appeared old and there was a musty smell, which was unpleasant. Another inconvenience was that the light switches were only on one side of the bed, making it very inconvenient to switch off the lights from the other side. The kitchenette was also very small. Cutlery was stored in a drawer above the bin, which was not ideal, and there were no extra plates provided. The tiles looked old with visible cracks, and some of the drawers were faulty. Overall, the room did not feel premium and felt overpriced for what was offered. The hotel rooms clearly need a glow-up to match the Kempinski brand and the rates charged. Additionally, the reception area was undergoing renovation, with no seating or waiting area. The pick-up and drop-off driveway is very narrow, only a small lane. When loading our luggage, we had to do so very quickly as other cars were waiting. The driveway would benefit from being more spacious. While the location is excellent, the room condition, layout, and facilities did not meet expectations for a Premier suite.

Shanghai, a truly cosmopolitan city

Shanghai’s reputation as a modern, bustling city stems from its history as a busy global trading port, as well as influences from the various different countries that controlled it across the 19th Century. Today, visitors can see a mix of traditional and new, east and west, with a vibrant, infectious energy that just invites you to explore further.

For those looking for a foodie-focused experience, head to Yuyuan Bazaar and local night markets for authentic Shanghainese eats. Try out pork-filled Xiaolongbao soup dumplings, pan-fried Shengjianbao pork buns, and, if you’re visiting in autumn, hairy crab. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, head over to the French Concession neighbourhood for European-inspired desserts. Or if you’re eating on the go, pick up a savoury Jianbing pancake. For a special treat, Jianbing is where to go for upscale dining - great for celebrating special occasions!

For travellers wanting to explore the city’s traditional heritage, the Yu Garden dates back to the Ming-Dynasty, with pathways to lead to pavilions, koi-filled ponds, and beautiful scenic halls. There are also a number of temples to explore in Shanghai, including the Jade Buddha Temple, Wen Miao Confucian Temple, and the Longhua Temple, which is the oldest temple in Shanghai. This is not to mention all the museums and galleries, including the Shanghai Museum, that you can visit!

Best Time to Visit Shanghai

Shanghai’s location on China’s subtropical eastern coast, along with its proximity to the Yangtze River means that its weather can be a little up and down. However, if you time your trip for spring or autumn, you can expect pleasant, comfortable temperatures and perhaps a little bit of rain. Each season and Shanghai, of course, offers a different experience, with a variety of local festivals throughout the year. Here’s what you can expect throughout the calendar year.
