Must-Visit Districts in Shanghai

Whether you’re in the mood to relax or want to feel the energy of the city, you’ll find that Shanghai’s distinct neighbourhoods offer a little something for everyone. From colonial-era waterfronts to luxury malls, the city’s districts have their own unique vibes, attractions and take on local cuisine.

The Bund: Shanghai’s historical waterfront

The Bund

Located on the Western bank of the Huangpu River, The Bund offers a unique blend of old and new. You’ll find colonial-era buildings looking onto nearby Pudong’s dramatic skyline, making this a great area for a gentle riverside walk. You can even take to the river cruise for a sightseeing cruise. There are plenty of waterfront cafes along the promenade to relax in and enjoy a cup of coffee, as well as trendy rooftop bars for when the city lights come on.

The Former French Concession: Shanghai’s historic tree-lined district

Wukang Building

Dating back to the 19th-Century, the Former French Concession is nowadays best known for its trendy cafes, boutique shops, and relaxed, creative atmosphere. Here, you’ll find colonial architecture from the time the area was under French control. Think Art Deco influences and picturesque tree-lined streets. A perfect place to while away an afternoon, with parks to explore and local eateries to pop into.

Lujiazui: Shanghai’s ultra-modern architecture

Lujiazui

The city’s financial and commercial district, Lujiazui in Pudong, is what comes to mind when you think of 21st-century Shanghai. With skyscrapers and high-end malls, this ultra-modern area is a true sight to behold. Famous sky-high architecture includes the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai Tower, both offering observation decks for panoramic city views. For those who don’t have a head for heights, the family-friendly Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is just around the corner.

Jing’An: Authentic Shanghai Lifestyle

Jingan Temple

Located in central Shanghai, the Jing'An district is where old meets me. Named after the Buddhist Jing’an Temple, find a fascinating mixture of 1920s-30s architecture to modern-day high-rises. If you're looking for a spot of shopping, Jing'An is the place to go. For all things luxury, head to the Plaza 66 and Jing’an Kerry Centre malls, and explore the Anyi Road markets over the weekends.

This time, when I brought my child to Shanghai for a trip, I still chose the Crowne Plaza Shanghai Nanjing Road. After a tiring full day at Disneyland, we arrived at the hotel and were grateful for the room upgrade to a suite. After checking out, we realized we had left a bag behind. A big thank you to staff member #066 who helped us find it and even arranged for it to be couriered home. The service here is absolutely amazing! Thank you very much! ❤️❤️

I made a special trip to leave a review after my stay, and it was a perfect experience. The hotel boasts an excellent location and a warm, tranquil interior design. The rooms are well-laid out, and the cleanliness standards are strict. The bedding and bathroom amenities are of good quality. What truly impressed me most was the hotel's overall service quality. The staff are well-trained, proactive in anticipating guests' needs, respond efficiently, and are friendly and approachable. There's no mechanical, rote service; instead, every interaction feels genuinely warm. While good facilities are fundamental, the exceptional, personalized service is undoubtedly the hotel's biggest highlight. Consequently, I extended my stay by another night, and Lynn at the front desk thoughtfully accommodated my request. This is definitely a hotel I'll choose again.

Train Station Area Shanghai|2.4km from city centre
This time, my family and I stayed in an Executive Suite at the Pullman Shanghai Jing An. First off, the hotel's location is incredibly convenient. It's right near Shanghai Railway Station, so if you're coming by high-speed rail, you're there in just five minutes after exiting the station. There's also Metro Line 1 right outside, about 50 meters away, making it easy to get to many famous Shanghai attractions. The suite consists of a bedroom and a living room, which was more than enough space for our family. The living room has a sofa bed that unfolds into a small bed, which was very practical. The room itself was clean and tidy, with complete amenities, and the kids really enjoyed the screen-mirroring TV. The front desk service was excellent, both during check-in and check-out. We'll definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Garden Hotel again during the May Golden Week holiday to watch the Longines Global Champions Tour in Shanghai. My first stay at the Garden Hotel was 30 years ago. The marble in the lobby, the Rose restaurant, and the small mosaic tiles in the corridors still maintain their grand and elegant style. That's why I always come back to this familiar place whenever I return to China. It was a family member's birthday on the day we checked in, and the hotel gave us a box of rich chocolates. I was truly touched by the hotel's thoughtfulness, it made us very happy! **Facilities**: The TOTO toilet at the Garden Hotel is my favorite because of its washlet function, making going to the restroom so comfortable! The depth and length of the bathtub are also perfect for me. The slippers are very thick and durable; I always feel reluctant to throw them away when checking out. I even take the used slippers with me to wear on planes or high-speed trains. **Hygiene**: The hygiene details are impeccable. The towels are soft and comfortable, with dense loops, making them very reassuring to use on the skin. **Environment**: The hotel has its own garden, where you can enjoy a rare tranquility in the city of Shanghai during a morning stroll! Just one traffic light to the left of the hotel entrance, there are many small bars and restaurants! There are even two Michelin-starred restaurants! It's definitely worth a walk and exploring. **Service**: I bought many things online, and they were delivered to the hotel in batches. The concierge meticulously recorded everything and delivered them to our room! When we left, the concierge helped put our luggage in the car trunk, opened and closed the doors, and politely bid us farewell. **Welcome Package**: We received canned drinks and snacks, which was a nice surprise!

I’m so glad I chose the Mehood Elegant Hotel. It was the perfect location — close to everything, not too crowded, yet not too remote either. I traveled solo with my 14-month-old toddler, and he was absolutely spoiled by all the hotel staff. Everyone treated us with so much kindness and care. Jerry checked us in and out and even gave me a cute fridge magnet. The breakfast was delicious with so many options to choose from, the rooms were cleaned daily, and bottled water was always replenished. Xiao Jun also took great care of us, and Yinhe Juan felt like an auntie to us. We looked forward to seeing them every morning at breakfast. They all made my stay feel so warm and welcoming — truly like a home away from home. I’m incredibly grateful for their hospitality, and if I ever find myself back in Shanghai again, I’ll definitely be booking Mehood. PS: the view from my room was incredible!

After comparing many hotels for my trip to Shanghai, I ultimately chose this one, and it proved to be an excellent decision! 👍 While the room facilities aren't brand new, the overall experience was still great, and it doesn't feel dated at all. The hotel's location is also superb, right near Exit 3 of Jing'an Temple Station, making it incredibly convenient to get to various attractions. The view from the room window was beautiful, and the kids were very comfortable and happy! I'll definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Shanghai! What truly surprised me and made my stay memorable was the front desk service! As soon as I entered the lobby, a staff member immediately offered to help with my luggage. During check-in, the staff were not only smiling throughout, but also carefully inquired about our preferences and specifically arranged a quiet room on a high floor for us. As a five-star hotel, both the service and facilities are quite good. I've always heard that Westin's family rooms are great, and I got to experience one on this trip to Shanghai. I won't go into detail about the good aspects, but I do have a few suggestions: 1. For a family room, there actually aren't many kids' amenities, just a few stuffed animals. For example, a step stool could be provided in the bathroom for children. 2. The sink in the bathroom constantly accumulates water on the inner side. I'm not sure if it's due to the countertop's angle or something else, but I hope it can be adjusted. 3. The toilet paper holder in the WC is too far inward, making it inconvenient to grab paper. If you pull hard, the roll might fall off. Moving the holder forward, reversing its direction, or moving it to the right side would all be good solutions. Overall, I hope Westin continues to improve as a high-end hotel. I look forward to experiencing it again next time!

Staying at Shangri-La Shanghai was exactly what a city escape should feel like: luxurious without being fussy, courteous without feeling formal. We were on the 25th floor, and the view of the river was the best part of the day — morning light on the Huangpu, the skyline stretching out, and at night the Pearl Tower glowing just down the road. It’s quiet up there, real tranquility despite being so close to all the tourist attractions. The comfort carried through everywhere: the indoor pool and jacuzzi were perfect for unwinding, the gym had everything we needed, and the grand lobby is lined with high-end stores if you feel like browsing. But the thing we’ll remember most is the afternoons — tea time in the lobby with a live folk music performance drifting through the space. It turns the whole lobby into something calm and beautiful. Courteous staff, comfortable rooms, and a location that puts you right in the heart of Shanghai. We’ll be back.

The hotel's location is excellent, right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, and only a few minutes' walk to Metro Line 2, making getting around super convenient. The hotel's design is luxurious, grand, and elegant, upholding Marriott's quality standards. The front desk and lobby staff are all very friendly; they even offered us drinks when we checked in. Cora, the guest service manager at the front desk, was incredibly efficient and professional during our check-in process. Because my other booking was split into three separate reservations, she expertly consolidated them for a continuous three-night stay, saving me the hassle of changing rooms daily. Even though I forgot to add a note when booking, she managed to put my sister and me on the same floor. Huge thanks to her for getting our three-day Shanghai trip off to such a great start! The hotel breakfast is abundant and delicious, with Shanghai-style scallion oil noodles available daily, plus many freshly made noodle and wonton stations. There's a wide selection of both Chinese and Western options. The cleaner responsible for my room, 2805, did an outstanding job; after a day out, we returned to a clean and tidy room, which was a pleasant surprise! The city view from the room is also beautiful. All in all, it was a very happy and satisfying stay! Definitely a 5-star recommendation!

1. The hotel boasts a unique deep-pit architectural design, featuring cliffside sightseeing elevators and panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows with viewing terraces – truly one-of-a-kind scenery. The guest rooms are high-end and fully equipped, with smart voice control for lighting and curtains, branded bathroom fixtures, Dyson hair dryers, premium toiletries, scenic bathtubs, and comfortable mattresses with excellent sound insulation. For families, a full set of children's amenities is provided. There's a wide array of entertainment options, including a daily lobby water screen show and a nightly cliffside holographic light show. Multiple restaurants and an executive lounge cater to all dining preferences. 2. The butler proactively contacted us to confirm our check-in needs, the doorman promptly assisted with luggage, and the front desk staff meticulously explained the park's shows and attractions. The entire process was smooth and thoughtful. Room service was meticulous and attentive; rooms were tidied daily, drinks replenished, and complimentary turndown treats provided. They offered special amenities for seniors and children, such as non-slip mats and cribs, and room service delivery was very fast. All staff members were polite and enthusiastic, greeting us proactively. Restaurant staff promptly refilled water and patiently introduced dishes. The entire service was professional and gentle. Upon departure, we received an exclusive farewell gift. I must commend the hotel butler, Bruce! He provided attentive follow-up throughout our stay, responding immediately to any requests and meticulously arranging all our recreational and dining activities in advance. His attention to detail and service were truly outstanding! 3. The room cleaning standards are exceptionally high; floors and balconies were free of dust and stains, bedding and towels were changed for each new guest, bathroom fixtures were sparkling clean without water stains, and corners were free of dust accumulation. The cleaning quality remained consistently high even during a multi-day stay. Linens and toiletries were replenished daily in full quantity, children's items were sanitized, and water glasses and drinking water were replaced daily. The indoor disinfection was thorough, and the rooms were well-sealed, resulting in few insects. There were no strange odors, making for a fresh and comfortable living environment. This stay was truly excellent value for money!

My overall experience with the business I conducted at this location was incredibly pleasant, and I absolutely have to commend Audrey, the front desk staff member. Her thorough and thoughtful service throughout left a deep impression on me, and I'm writing this review to express my gratitude. As soon as I walked through the door, the front desk staff immediately stood up and greeted me warmly. Her tone was gentle and friendly, and she maintained a sincere smile, instantly easing any awkwardness I felt as a first-time visitor. I hadn't brought all the necessary documents with me and had many questions about the process, required materials, and fee standards. I was worried it would take a long time and that the staff might become impatient, but she was incredibly patient throughout, without a hint of perfunctoriness or laxity. She clearly explained each step of the process item by item. For technical terms I didn't understand, she rephrased them in easy-to-understand language and explained them repeatedly. Thoughtfully, she took out a pen and paper, wrote down a detailed list of materials I needed to provide, and noted important considerations for each item, saving me from making multiple trips. While I was waiting for the procedures to be processed, she saw me standing and proactively guided me to the seating area, even offering me drinking water. Her attentiveness was evident in every detail. When handling the business, she was skilled and efficient, verifying information carefully and meticulously. She double-checked every detail with me to prevent any errors. Midway through, I added several additional questions related to various different services, and she answered each one in detail, proactively informing me about related benefits and precautions, showing incredible thoughtfulness. Throughout our entire interaction, her demeanor was appropriate, polite, and humble, and her speaking pace was just right. She showed empathy for the customer's difficulties and displayed no impatience or perfunctoriness. Her professionalism and service awareness were impeccable. It's precisely because of such a diligent, responsible, and thoughtful front desk employee that the overall image of the establishment has been greatly enhanced, making my entire process smooth and worry-free. Such excellent service deserves high praise. If any friends or family have similar needs in the future, I will definitely recommend this establishment, and I hope the store will generously reward this dedicated staff member!

People's Square Shanghai|0.62km from city centre
Guests: 2 adults, 1 child (6 years old) Room type: King Bed (Double Bed) --- ⭐ Location: Absolutely Perfect The hotel is right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. M&M's, LEGO, and the Bund are just a short walk away. It's incredibly convenient for dining, shopping, and taking the subway. The area downstairs is lively, but we didn't find it noisy. However, if you're sensitive to noise, I recommend asking the hotel for a higher floor room in advance (their highest is the 6th floor). ⭐ Room: Small, but Clean The room isn't very large. After placing two suitcases and a stroller, it was pretty difficult to move around. One unique feature: the sink isn't inside the bathroom; it's right by the entrance on the right. If this bothers you, you might want to reconsider. We specifically asked the hotel staff, and if you want a larger room, they suggest the family room. The main differences are the location within the hotel and the size of the desk. If you're traveling with kids, I honestly recommend booking a family room directly. As for cleanliness, it was impeccable: · Towels were replaced daily, and they were the individually packaged, disposable kind. · A cleaner came to tidy up every day. · Water bottles were replenished daily. The hot water and air conditioning worked perfectly, no issues at all. ⭐ Service: Truly Worth Mentioning This was the most surprising aspect of our entire stay. We don't have Chinese phone numbers, and initially, we were worried about ordering food delivery or making purchases. However, the hotel staff were incredibly proactive in helping us. Not only was their attitude excellent, but they genuinely solved our problems: · Helped with food delivery: They used their own phones to order meals for us directly. · Helped buy a suitcase: On one occasion, we needed to buy a suitcase, and a supervisor named Ruan (阮) even used his personal account to order it for us. This level of service goes beyond ”basic courtesy”; they were truly dedicated to helping guests. We arrived at the hotel past 1 AM, and the front desk quickly processed our check-in without any issues, even though we were using passports. Luggage storage was also smooth: On the day we went to Wuzhen, we left our large suitcases in the lobby. They tagged them, and we simply picked them up upon our return. There are many surveillance cameras throughout the hotel, making it feel quite secure. ⭐ Value for Money: No Breakfast, No Restaurant, but Location and Service Made Up for It This hotel doesn't offer breakfast or have a restaurant. While there are many dining options downstairs, the hotel itself doesn't provide breakfast. Considering the price, the location, and this level of service, it was very reasonable, even exceeding our expectations. --- ✅ In Summary If you want to stay near Nanjing Road and can accept a slightly smaller room, this hotel is definitely worth considering. Especially if you're traveling with children and don't have a Chinese phone number, their service will give you great peace of mind. However, for family trips, I recommend booking a family room directly.

Nice little hotel, but not for me. It is located right next to Sam's Club and that's always nice. Being able to eat Sam's pizza and hot dogs is always nice. The bed, while big, was not comfortable to me. I know everyone has their preferences on softness levels. When I stay at a hotel, l like mattresses I melt into because they are soft. Not that way here. But I know some people prefer these mattresses. They had a restaurant and bar that looked nice, but I didn't visit as I had dinner and drinks with others not staying at hotel. The real deal breaker for me was no refrigerator in my room. Some rooms may have them. Mine did not (that I could find at least). When I stay at a hotel for more than one night, a refrigerator is a must, either for leftover food or cold drinks. Also, for a superior queen room, I think it said balcony or terrace and sofa, none of which my room had. And for garden view... Definitely not a pretty garden, more like a cement walkway and Sam's. And lastly, no room service... I know it's not advertised as having room service... But paying nearly 500rmb a night, just having a club sandwich or dumplings available late night would be nice. Maybe work out a deal with Sam's. Colleague stayed at a hotel less than 10 mins away that was cheaper, had a bathtub, had a late night menu, and had a refrigerator. Staff were great! Very helpful! If I go back to area, not sure if I would choose again. The access to Sam's is nice. I'd like to try out their bar and restaurant. But the no refrigerator scares me off a bit.

It was an interesting stay. Great location right off the shopping boulevard. The hotel has a bar and two restaurants. A spa, a foot spa, and gym. We had lounge access which was a nice bonus but not really worth the extra money. You get free breakfast, appetizers from 6-8, and lounge access for coffee and sodas from 1-930. The breakfast was yummy. Offered a wide selection of food with regional dishes to western foods. One of the few places I’ve traveled outside the US that has actual bacon. We never waited but there was a sign saying there were peak hours. Check in was great. I had an issue with a bag left in a DiDi and the front desk agent went out of his way to help me get in touch with driver to recover my bag. The room much like the rest of the hotel feels trapped in that fake opulence that was popular awhile back. The shower was awkward because of its shape but it did have a rain shower which was nice. One of the few hotels I’ve been in lately that didn’t have the bath stuff bolted to the wall (though it probably wouldn’t fit). Huge tub and large fluffy towels. My daughter and I both left with some bug bites from our stay not bed bugs but definitely something. The biggest drawback to the room is the lack of functional outlets. One bed has no open plugs or usb ports the other bed has a wonky extension cord with some usb ports. Found one other usb in the room in the desk area. The hotel is doing some work apparently later this month so hopefully they bring it into this century. One thing I didn’t discover until the next day is there is an entrance from the back of the hotel right on the big shopping street. There’s also a cute little food court right there where you can grab a pretty decent variety of food. One warning is didi and food delivery have a hard time with the address

It's super convenient, about 300 meters from the subway, with great options for dining and shopping nearby. Facilities: The hotel breakfast is excellent, and you can order a main course (the asparagus and salmon is fantastic, both in presentation and taste). The coffee is also great. My favorite part was the waterfall-like shower—so relaxing! Although the hotel is older, the facilities are well-maintained. The room lighting control is user-friendly, and the charging outlets are very convenient (multi-purpose, I'm definitely getting one!). Cleanliness: The hotel uses Diptyque toiletries. The hotel's location is superb, making getting around a breeze; you can hail a taxi right downstairs. A special shout-out to Jeremy from the Executive Lounge! From check-in to departure, he was attentive and thoughtful throughout. He proactively explained all the lounge benefits, from breakfast and afternoon tea to evening service, arranging everything with meticulous care and warmth. He was quick to respond to any request, demonstrating professionalism and genuine hospitality that made us feel like family. Our experience was perfect, highly recommended!

Fantastic location, with a variety of delicious food right outside the door. We tried the most popular pan-fried buns near the old shops on the pedestrian street – absolutely delicious! The staff helped us with our luggage, which was great. The only downsides were the lack of a laundry room and a microwave, which can be inconvenient for families traveling. However, the front desk arranged a small gift for us before checkout, which was a very thoughtful touch. There was no smoke smell in the room or hallway, which made it feel very fresh. The decor is quite old but charming.

City StayCation Just a random weekend to get a couple appointments done in the city, this hotel has the best price in the tourist area for anyone wanting to have fun. Easy to cross the River by ferry (inexpensive) or tunnel (80 RMB). There are restaurants inside the hotel, and it’s maintained quite well, considering that the overall decor is somewhat vintage. The higher floors will give more quiet time. Really comfortable sleeping. I decided not to eat breakfast. The shops on the walkway are more expensive, but it’s still fun to splurge or Just explore. Two really good jazz clubs within walking distance and although traffic does get backed up, being prepared with the proper shoes is helpful . Staff is friendly and attentive. A note about the rooms is that the air conditioner might face the bed. There were not signs of allergens when the temperature is set reasonably. Bathrobes are not part of the room amenities. Everything else was great. The bathtub, bath, salt, steam, masks, and utilities were perfect.

The Bund Area Shanghai|2.48km from city centre
I booked a twin room facing the Bund, and at check-in, the front desk told me that the highest floors for this room type were 17th or 18th. However, I later saw on the Ctrip booking page that it showed up to around the 30th floor. I'm not sure which information to trust, but the room the staff member gave me had a pretty good view, despite being on a slightly lower floor. The room's furnishings were quite basic; they even had outdoor-style tables and chairs, which felt a bit cheap. The air conditioning vent was quite noisy, which might bother light sleepers. The housekeeping service needs improvement; I pressed the button for cleaning, but they didn't come on time. They only showed up right before their shift ended and did a rather perfunctory job. I'd say that considering the location and price, it still offers good value for money. However, the hotel was very busy, and we had to queue for breakfast.

I stayed at this hotel back when it was still the Kempinski and always had a pleasant experience. This time, under the new IHG Vignette Collection branding, the stay fell far short of expectations. Upon arrival, there was no one outside to assist with luggage. Staff members only rushed out after they saw me already pulling my bags from the car myself. The check-in process was noticeably slower, and I wasn’t offered an upgrade — which used to be a regular, appreciated gesture during my previous stays. I was given one of the smallest rooms I’ve ever had in this hotel. The room itself had several issues. The microwave didn’t work at all, so I couldn’t heat up the takeaway I’d brought. The bedroom TV remote wasn’t responsive; I struggled with it for a long time and eventually just managed to turn the TV off, but not control it. The worst part was the noise from the room above — constant, disruptive sounds that went on until well past midnight, severely affecting my sleep. I did call reception about it, but the noise continued. Checkout felt impersonal and rushed. No one asked how my stay was. I simply handed over my room key and that was it. When my pre-ordered car had trouble finding the hotel entrance, I handed the phone to a staff member expecting them to guide the driver. Instead, he simply found out where the car was parked, handed the phone back, and left me to drag my luggage there on my own. The only positive is the central location, which remains excellent. But for service, room comfort, and attention to detail, this was a letdown. I hope they can bring back the standards they used to have.

Fantastic service, spotless rooms, and super convenient! The hospitality at this hotel is outstanding. Check-in was flawless, and the staff were so attentive. A special shoutout to Anna, who was incredibly sweet and helpful. She opened a chat line with me to provide instant support and directions, making me feel like I had a personal assistant on hand. She even helped push my luggage to my room! The room itself was clean, spacious enough for two, and featured a very comfy bed, a modern bathroom with great water pressure, and a powerful hairdryer. The breakfast offered a good variety of tasty choices. The location is unbeatable—literally just a few meters from Wuding Road Station (Exit 1) across the street. Having a Peet's Coffee in the lobby was the icing on the cake. The only downside is the lack of a dedicated concierge service for luggage handling during check-in/out. Overall, the price and quality are top-notch. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Shanghai!

Shanghai, a truly cosmopolitan city

Shanghai’s reputation as a modern, bustling city stems from its history as a busy global trading port, as well as influences from the various different countries that controlled it across the 19th Century. Today, visitors can see a mix of traditional and new, east and west, with a vibrant, infectious energy that just invites you to explore further.

For those looking for a foodie-focused experience, head to Yuyuan Bazaar and local night markets for authentic Shanghainese eats. Try out pork-filled Xiaolongbao soup dumplings, pan-fried Shengjianbao pork buns, and, if you’re visiting in autumn, hairy crab. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, head over to the French Concession neighbourhood for European-inspired desserts. Or if you’re eating on the go, pick up a savoury Jianbing pancake. For a special treat, Jianbing is where to go for upscale dining - great for celebrating special occasions!

For travellers wanting to explore the city’s traditional heritage, the Yu Garden dates back to the Ming-Dynasty, with pathways to lead to pavilions, koi-filled ponds, and beautiful scenic halls. There are also a number of temples to explore in Shanghai, including the Jade Buddha Temple, Wen Miao Confucian Temple, and the Longhua Temple, which is the oldest temple in Shanghai. This is not to mention all the museums and galleries, including the Shanghai Museum, that you can visit!
