Must-Visit Districts in Shanghai

Whether you’re in the mood to relax or want to feel the energy of the city, you’ll find that Shanghai’s distinct neighbourhoods offer a little something for everyone. From colonial-era waterfronts to luxury malls, the city’s districts have their own unique vibes, attractions and take on local cuisine.

The Bund: Shanghai’s historical waterfront

The Bund

Located on the Western bank of the Huangpu River, The Bund offers a unique blend of old and new. You’ll find colonial-era buildings looking onto nearby Pudong’s dramatic skyline, making this a great area for a gentle riverside walk. You can even take to the river cruise for a sightseeing cruise. There are plenty of waterfront cafes along the promenade to relax in and enjoy a cup of coffee, as well as trendy rooftop bars for when the city lights come on.

The Former French Concession: Shanghai’s historic tree-lined district

Wukang Building

Dating back to the 19th-Century, the Former French Concession is nowadays best known for its trendy cafes, boutique shops, and relaxed, creative atmosphere. Here, you’ll find colonial architecture from the time the area was under French control. Think Art Deco influences and picturesque tree-lined streets. A perfect place to while away an afternoon, with parks to explore and local eateries to pop into.

Lujiazui: Shanghai’s ultra-modern architecture

Lujiazui

The city’s financial and commercial district, Lujiazui in Pudong, is what comes to mind when you think of 21st-century Shanghai. With skyscrapers and high-end malls, this ultra-modern area is a true sight to behold. Famous sky-high architecture includes the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai Tower, both offering observation decks for panoramic city views. For those who don’t have a head for heights, the family-friendly Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is just around the corner.

Jing’An: Authentic Shanghai Lifestyle

Jingan Temple

Located in central Shanghai, the Jing'An district is where old meets me. Named after the Buddhist Jing’an Temple, find a fascinating mixture of 1920s-30s architecture to modern-day high-rises. If you're looking for a spot of shopping, Jing'An is the place to go. For all things luxury, head to the Plaza 66 and Jing’an Kerry Centre malls, and explore the Anyi Road markets over the weekends.

First off, a huge 5-star shoutout to Iris at the front desk! She was so kind, helpful, capable, and beautiful. We booked through Ctrip, but the payment failed. Iris proactively helped us complete the booking and check-in process swiftly by facilitating a friend's payment. She even went out of her way to upgrade our room, which was incredibly touching – it felt like being cared for by family. Next, another 5-star rating goes to the hotel staff in general. On our first day, I was taking a nap in the afternoon when I noticed some noise in the room. I called the front desk, and they immediately sent a maintenance worker with a ladder to my room. He eliminated the noise within 5 minutes, allowing me to rest peacefully. Other service staff also delivered requested items to our room within minutes. Finally, a 5-star rating for the hotel's excellent facilities. The bathtub, lighting, and air conditioning were all top-notch. And I absolutely have to mention the swimming pool – it was fantastic! While I was out on errands, my family went for a swim, and everyone came back feeling incredibly happy. All in all, this hotel feels as warm and comfortable as staying at home. 5-star recommended!

This is another hidden gem of a hotel that exceeded all my expectations! 😍 Located in the New World on Nanjing Road, its prime location goes without saying. Despite being 20 years old, the hotel is remarkably well-maintained. The rooms, hallways, and lobby all exude a sense of comfort. The rooms are fully equipped with practical amenities, avoiding unnecessary clutter. The swimming pool was a pleasant surprise – the views, cleanliness, water temperature, facilities, and service were all exceptional, making for an experience far beyond what I anticipated 👍. The revolving restaurant on the 45th floor is also worth multiple visits – highly recommended! The staff are incredibly well-trained, from the front desk to housekeeping, and the restaurant and gym staff, all providing warm, comfortable, and professional service. The price during the Chinese New Year holiday was also incredibly attractive! A truly wonderful experience!

This was my second stay at this hotel, and I was upgraded to an Elite CEO room on the 28th floor. It's an open-plan suite without a partition, and the bathroom is large and bright. The curtains are automatic, but the toilet isn't a smart one. Breakfast at the Panoramic Western Restaurant was excellent; the staff cleared plates promptly, and the food was well-stocked. They had freshly squeezed watermelon and green vegetable juice, and the mini wontons were handmade, not frozen, which was a nice touch. The gym and swimming pool are open to hotel guests.

Everything was perfect. Upon check-in, the front desk arranged a high-floor room with a garden view for us, which made our first stay at the Garden Hotel exceptionally pleasant. The room was spacious and clean, and the view was fantastic. I called twice for bottled water and extra towels, and both times they were delivered very quickly. It's rare to find a hotel in the city center with free parking. Due to time constraints, we didn't get to use other hotel facilities, including dining, but the cafe on the ground floor looked very inviting.

I have to give Carl a great review! Mike, the front desk manager, was amazing at handling a service issue. The AC in my standard room was broken, and they upgraded me to a mini-suite – how awesome is that?! The room attendant was also very warm and attentive. Breakfast was good too, but make sure to go early; it gets incredibly crowded around 9 AM. The location is excellent, and parking is completely free, which is a huge plus because parking in this area would normally cost over 100 yuan a day. I only paid 1190 yuan for the room – such a fantastic deal!

This hotel boasts an excellent location, within walking distance of key Shanghai attractions like Yu Garden, City God Temple, and The Bund. With subway stations just around the corner, transportation is incredibly convenient, making it a breeze for both families and solo travelers to explore the city. The hotel is surrounded by a diverse array of dining and shopping options, fulfilling all your daily needs in one go. Inside, the facilities are comprehensive. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and the bathrooms even feature smart toilets. Thoughtful services include self-service laundry, professional travel photography, and children's activities. They also offer unique experiences like DIY crafts and a warm, nightly sweet soup, adding both comfort and fun to your trip. Complimentary mini-bar drinks and fresh fruit in the room are lovely touches, making check-in incredibly smooth and pleasant. A special shout-out to Ella at the front desk for her warm, thorough, and attentive service. Our entire experience was comfortable and hassle-free, leading to a truly excellent stay overall.

Choosing this hotel was definitely the right decision. Its biggest advantage is the location, being so close to the Bund, which made planning our itinerary incredibly convenient. The room was very clean, and all the essential amenities were provided, ensuring a comfortable stay. The gym and laundry facilities on the fourth floor were a great bonus, adding a lot of convenience to our trip, and we used them frequently. The front desk team deserves praise for their quick responses and excellent attitude. Overall, the hotel performed consistently well in all key areas, offering great value for money.

I brought my child to Shanghai for a few days before the Spring Festival, and after some comparison, I decided to stay here, which turned out to be a wise choice. First, the transportation is convenient. It's a 2-minute walk from Jing'an Temple Metro Station, which has multiple lines connecting everywhere. Taxis are also readily available. Second, there are plenty of shopping and dining options around Jing'an Temple. Third, although the room has a classic feel, it has everything you need. Finally, the service was excellent. Concierge Andy Sheng was very helpful, highly recommended!

Facilities: The bathroom sink wasn't very practical; water splashed everywhere easily. Environment: The breakfast area and lobby bar are shared and quite small. Service: The hotel service was really good. The front desk staff, especially Loretta, were very professional. She deserves a huge commendation – even on her days off, she'd message me to say I could reach out to her anytime if I needed anything. The concierge service was also excellent, promptly anticipating guests' needs, making both check-in and check-out very smooth. Housekeeping was great too; turndown service was always done by the time I returned to my room. Breakfast is a crucial indicator of a hotel's quality, reflecting its attention to detail and standards through its offerings and quality control. After I spoke with the hotel, there was an improvement the next day. The bakery items were truly outstanding; the pastries were perfectly flaky, and both the pancakes and waffles were delicious. The fried dishes also had a great texture.

So close to perfection.... So close. I have been putting off staying at this hotel for years, and that is a regret. This hotel is amazing. Location, Great. Staff, friendly. Beds, comfortable. 24 hour room service, fantastic. Bidet toilet seat, amazing. For the price, this hotel is a steal. Better service and better rooms than hotels that are double the price. My biggest problem. The bathtub is too small. It looks big, but for a 190cm guy, it's just way way too small. Looks big in pictures... Not in reality. They probably have bigger tubs in different rooms (maybe executive or suites). I will contact them before booking again to make sure tub is big. The pool is great. The Sauna and steam room in the changing rooms are great. I do wish there was a jacuzzi or some hot pool... Either in the gendered changing rooms or by the pool. Recommendations: the bathrobes are small, get some plus sized ones. More coffee in the room, 2 pods aren't enough. More water in rooms, 4 small bottles aren't enough. Allow cooling during winter, I know it's not easy, but many expats don't want 25° rooms. Finally... For room service. EGGS BENEDICT!!!! You already have a good room service breakfast menu... But you need eggs Benedict. I judge hotels room service based on club sandwiches. This club sandwich was mid tier. Not bad, not fantastic. Granted I ordered the late night club sandwich. Maybe there is a difference. But this is the same with all of the other room service food I ordered. Good. Just a few steps away from great. But super happy there is a 24hr menu! Next time I stay I will experiment with regular hours food vs late night. In all. This hotel is amazing! Definitely will stay again. Just hopefully I can get a bigger bathtub next time.

Lujiazui Area Shanghai|2.51km from city centre
During the Chinese New Year, I brought my child to Shanghai and had the pleasure of staying at the Grand Hyatt for two nights, thanks to our itinerary. The location is truly excellent, situated in the prime Lujiazui area, right next to the large shopping complex Super Brand Mall and the luxury IFC Mall, making shopping and entertaining the kids incredibly convenient. During the holiday, the hotel even offered various free activities for children staying with them at scheduled times. We booked a room in the Jin Mao Tower (Purple Gold Building), and although it's an older wing, it's well-maintained, and the room was clean and tidy. Breakfast is on the second floor, with access from both towers. On the first day, there was a slight hiccup: staff members at the entrance were directing guests to a temporary dining area on the third floor. Regular hotel guests would know that temporary areas can differ significantly, and at the very least, guests should be clearly informed and given the option to wait or go to the temporary area. While it's understandable that it was busy and understaffed during Chinese New Year, after my complaint, a restaurant manager followed up the same day, and things improved the next day. However, it still highlighted a lack of staff training that led to much confusion.

Fantastic hotel! We checked into a twin room at 3 PM. We were told there's only one twin room on the ground floor, and it's located at the very end. However, this didn't affect our view of the cliff light and shadow show at night. The light show deserves a perfect 100 – it's absolutely worth seeing! A big thank you to Li Jinsen from the hotel for his help during breakfast. The egg tarts at breakfast were delicious; the large ones are for members, but the smaller ones at the buffet were just as tasty!

I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent service at Regalia. A special shout-out to Melody, the handsome guy at the front desk. Not only did he fix the printer to help me copy some documents, but he also went out of his way to adjust my breakfast schedule based on my specific needs. This hotel is perfectly suited to my taste. The lobby is predominantly decorated in black and red, with even the glass panels featuring a red tint. The lobby area is incredibly spacious, boasting many distinct seating zones, which made me feel like I could spend an entire day just lounging there. The hotel is conveniently located right next to a large shopping mall, MixC City, offering a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Plus, it's just a few subway stops from either the train station or the airport. Getting to the hotel from Ziteng Road Metro Station: exit and enter the shopping mall through its main illuminated entrance. For the most straightforward path, *before* you reach the pedestrian street of the metro commercial area, follow the signs to take the elevator up to the second floor. From there, walk through the parking lot between Buildings A and B, and you'll arrive directly at the hotel, with no stairs to navigate. Overall, I feel the hotel's marketing efforts are insufficient. This hidden gem truly deserves to be discovered by more people.

The hotel is conveniently located near Nanjing Street, making it easy to get around and explore the area. There is a convenience store close by, which is very handy for quick purchases. For Muslim travelers, there is a halal restaurant nearby called Nizam, which is a big plus. The room was quite small and really only suitable for sleeping. The walls are not soundproof, so noise can be an issue—light sleepers may find it uncomfortable. Overall, it’s an okay option for a short stay if location is your priority

To all staff at Metropolo Shanghai Nanjing Road Hotel: Hello! My stay at your hotel truly allowed me to experience the unique charm and sophisticated humanistic care of old Shanghai's 'Ten-Mile Foreign Concession'. From the historically rich architectural design to the convenient and thoughtful transportation services, and from the professional and meticulous front desk reception to the clean and tidy guest room environment, every detail left a deep impression on me. I especially want to thank the housekeeping team for their hard work in creating a bright and comfortable living space for us, and the front desk staff for their patient assistance, which made my trip to Shanghai smoother. Your hotel perfectly blends a century of history with modern services, making it not just an accommodation but also a window into Shanghai's unique 'Haipai' culture. I sincerely express my gratitude to you all and look forward to staying again in the future to relive this uniquely wonderful experience. Metropolo Shanghai Nanjing Road Hotel Experience Report I. Haipai Humanistic Design Rooted in a Century of Heritage The Metropolo Shanghai Nanjing Road Hotel is a significant protected building from modern Shanghai. It was once a gathering place for literary giants such as Ba Jin and Lu Xun, and the founding site of the Chinese Young Journalists Association. The hotel completed its renovation and upgrade in 2017, retaining some antique items from its opening in 1931 while incorporating an Art Deco style with Oriental cultural essence, creating a space that is both vintage and fashionable. The guest rooms are full of thoughtful details: a mosaic depiction of the International Hotel exterior serves as a background wall, hammered glass balances transparency and privacy, and the combination of French charm and Chinese royal-style furniture showcases exquisite taste. Some themed rooms even replicate the furnishings of desks and dressing tables from the Republic of China era, with replica handwritten letters from Lu Xun to Ba Jin hanging on the walls, with the elegance of old Shanghai flowing through every corner. The hotel corridors display 64 old Shanghai photographs, each with detailed textual descriptions, like a tangible urban history book, often inviting guests to stop and read. II. Convenient Transportation in a Prime Location The hotel is located at 200 Shanxinan Road, Huangpu District, Shanghai, adjacent to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. It's just a 50-meter walk to the subway entrance, a 1-minute walk to Nanjing East Road subway station, and surrounded by multiple subway stations such as Natural History Museum Station and People's Square Station, providing easy access to all corners of the city. The Bund is a 10-minute walk away, and along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, you can conveniently reach dining landmarks like Yuxingji (People's Square branch), making it easy to enjoy both sightseeing and delicious food. For self-driving guests, the hotel offers free parking and valet services, allowing vehicles to drive directly to the hotel entrance, eliminating the need to carry heavy luggage. It also provides airport transfers, tour arrangements, and ticket booking services to comprehensively meet travel needs. III. Professional and Thoughtful Service Experience (I) Front Desk Reception The hotel front desk staff are highly professional, providing detailed answers from check-in procedures to itinerary inquiries. They consistently give accurate and warm responses to guests' questions about the hotel's history and surrounding attractions, allowing guests to experience the attentive service of old Shanghai from the moment they arrive. (II) Housekeeping The guest rooms and public areas are always kept clean and bright. Bedding, towels, and other linens are free of foreign objects or discoloration, and the shower area has ample water pressure and is spotlessly clean. Housekeeping staff are meticulous, promptly cleaning room waste and replenishing daily necessities, creating a comfortable and tidy living environment for guests. (III) Hardware and Supporting Facilities The hotel elevators operate smoothly, and the retro floor indicator on the first floor is clear and unambiguous, making it easy to find your way even for first-time guests. The soundproofing in the guest rooms is excellent; even though it's near the bustling Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, outside noise is effectively blocked. Combined with slow-rebound zero-pressure memory pillows, guests are provided with a high-quality sleep experience.

The breakfast spread was also very generous. The staff were all so kind and welcoming. I particularly appreciated the bottled water readily available by the elevators, which was a huge convenience and time-saver that I haven't seen at other hotels. The only thing I think could be improved is offering a choice of soft and firm pillows. The pillows in the room were too soft and flat, which wasn't ideal for guests like us who have specific pillow preferences.

Our stay at the hotel was excellent. The room had a breathtaking view of the Bund and the 'three-piece suite' (Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and Shanghai World Financial Center). The food at the Executive Lounge on the 3rd floor of the East Building was also delicious. Breakfast, afternoon tea, and dinner were all very good. Rosten provided excellent service, and the butler, Lorna, whom he arranged for us, was exceptional. She called us in advance to confirm our room preferences and helped us secure a room. She even upgraded us to an Executive Lounge room type. Upon arrival, she helped us coordinate our room, and when we found the TV couldn't screen mirror, she brought us an extra mirroring device. She truly paid attention to our needs and helped us resolve issues. However, the service was a bit hit-or-miss. The front desk staff who checked us in not only failed to assign us the room that the butler had secured for us but also disregarded our request for a Pearl Tower view, assigning us a room in the East Building with a Bund view. Then, she self-importantly declared, ”Please trust my taste.” But a service person's taste should not outweigh a customer's needs. This front desk staff member might lack the most basic respect for customer requirements. Fortunately, after some coordination, we were able to switch to a room that met our needs, and the rest of our stay was very pleasant.

The hotel’s location is very good. It is about a 5-minute walk to a huge Starbucks, Nanjing West Road, the MRT station, and Wujiang Road, which has several nice bakeries and food options. This made getting around very convenient. There was also a 7-11 just across the road. However, the Premier Two-Bedroom Suite was disappointing for the price paid. The rooms are rather small, especially the master bedroom, where there was not enough space to place or open any luggage. We had to keep our luggage in the living room instead. The bathroom, particularly the shower area, looked very dated. The tiles appeared old and there was a musty smell, which was unpleasant. Another inconvenience was that the light switches were only on one side of the bed, making it very inconvenient to switch off the lights from the other side. The kitchenette was also very small. Cutlery was stored in a drawer above the bin, which was not ideal, and there were no extra plates provided. The tiles looked old with visible cracks, and some of the drawers were faulty. Overall, the room did not feel premium and felt overpriced for what was offered. The hotel rooms clearly need a glow-up to match the Kempinski brand and the rates charged. Additionally, the reception area was undergoing renovation, with no seating or waiting area. The pick-up and drop-off driveway is very narrow, only a small lane. When loading our luggage, we had to do so very quickly as other cars were waiting. The driveway would benefit from being more spacious. While the location is excellent, the room condition, layout, and facilities did not meet expectations for a Premier suite.

Shanghai, a truly cosmopolitan city

Shanghai’s reputation as a modern, bustling city stems from its history as a busy global trading port, as well as influences from the various different countries that controlled it across the 19th Century. Today, visitors can see a mix of traditional and new, east and west, with a vibrant, infectious energy that just invites you to explore further.

For those looking for a foodie-focused experience, head to Yuyuan Bazaar and local night markets for authentic Shanghainese eats. Try out pork-filled Xiaolongbao soup dumplings, pan-fried Shengjianbao pork buns, and, if you’re visiting in autumn, hairy crab. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, head over to the French Concession neighbourhood for European-inspired desserts. Or if you’re eating on the go, pick up a savoury Jianbing pancake. For a special treat, Jianbing is where to go for upscale dining - great for celebrating special occasions!

For travellers wanting to explore the city’s traditional heritage, the Yu Garden dates back to the Ming-Dynasty, with pathways to lead to pavilions, koi-filled ponds, and beautiful scenic halls. There are also a number of temples to explore in Shanghai, including the Jade Buddha Temple, Wen Miao Confucian Temple, and the Longhua Temple, which is the oldest temple in Shanghai. This is not to mention all the museums and galleries, including the Shanghai Museum, that you can visit!

However, if you time your trip for spring or autumn, you can expect pleasant, comfortable temperatures and perhaps a little bit of rain.
