Must-Visit Districts in Shanghai

Whether you’re in the mood to relax or want to feel the energy of the city, you’ll find that Shanghai’s distinct neighbourhoods offer a little something for everyone. From colonial-era waterfronts to luxury malls, the city’s districts have their own unique vibes, attractions and take on local cuisine.

The Bund: Shanghai’s historical waterfront

The Bund

Located on the Western bank of the Huangpu River, The Bund offers a unique blend of old and new. You’ll find colonial-era buildings looking onto nearby Pudong’s dramatic skyline, making this a great area for a gentle riverside walk. You can even take to the river cruise for a sightseeing cruise. There are plenty of waterfront cafes along the promenade to relax in and enjoy a cup of coffee, as well as trendy rooftop bars for when the city lights come on.

The Former French Concession: Shanghai’s historic tree-lined district

Wukang Building

Dating back to the 19th-Century, the Former French Concession is nowadays best known for its trendy cafes, boutique shops, and relaxed, creative atmosphere. Here, you’ll find colonial architecture from the time the area was under French control. Think Art Deco influences and picturesque tree-lined streets. A perfect place to while away an afternoon, with parks to explore and local eateries to pop into.

Lujiazui: Shanghai’s ultra-modern architecture

Lujiazui

The city’s financial and commercial district, Lujiazui in Pudong, is what comes to mind when you think of 21st-century Shanghai. With skyscrapers and high-end malls, this ultra-modern area is a true sight to behold. Famous sky-high architecture includes the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Shanghai Tower, both offering observation decks for panoramic city views. For those who don’t have a head for heights, the family-friendly Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is just around the corner.

Jing’An: Authentic Shanghai Lifestyle

Jingan Temple

Located in central Shanghai, the Jing'An district is where old meets me. Named after the Buddhist Jing’an Temple, find a fascinating mixture of 1920s-30s architecture to modern-day high-rises. If you're looking for a spot of shopping, Jing'An is the place to go. For all things luxury, head to the Plaza 66 and Jing’an Kerry Centre malls, and explore the Anyhi Road markets over the weekends.

The location is super convenient, right next to Times Square, making it easy to catch a Broadway show. I especially loved the breakfast; the dining area was beautiful and the food was delicious. You can choose from breakfast sets or order à la carte. They even give you free tickets to MoMA when you check in! The hotel is only about a ten-minute walk from MoMA, and my daughter went two days in a row!

Times Square New York|5.2km from city centre
The hotel's location right in Times Square is excellent. For Manhattan, the room was surprisingly spacious, featuring two full-sized beds and a large sofa that could comfortably sleep an adult. Service was also good; the front desk staff were very friendly. There's a $40 daily resort fee that includes a credit you can use to grab food from the hotel restaurant – definitely use it, or it goes to waste! Midtown Manhattan attractions are all within walking distance, and getting to Uptown and Downtown is incredibly convenient via subway or Uber. While Times Square itself can be a bit chaotic and gritty, it's bustling with trendy spots and all sorts of dining options. Plus, being on the 35th floor, the room was surprisingly quiet. Despite a few minor issues, the positives definitely outweighed the negatives, and I was quite satisfied overall.

My son and I had the most incredible experience! I would recommend the William Vale to all my friends and family. The balcony views at sunset in the summer are absolutely stunning. The hotel itself offers many thoughtful amenities including a welcome message with your name on the television upon arrival. I honestly only have one small complaint and that was the cleaning service. We called about having the room cleaned and actually spoke with the individual who said she would come back at the time we requested but she never returned. Other than that one little hiccup everything went smoothly from the time we pulled up to valet to unload our luggage. There is NO better hotel to stay in Williamsburg aside from the William Vale.

I had a wonderful experience at this hotel. The staff were exceptionally cooperative and friendly, always ready to help with a smile. The cleanliness of the hotel was outstanding, and everything felt well-maintained and comfortable. My only suggestion for improvement would be to add a bidet shower in the bathroom, which would make the stay even more perfect. Overall, highly recommended!

Train Station Area Shanghai|2.4km from city centre
In the cluster of hotels in Shanghai's core area, what truly sets Pullman Shanghai Jing'an apart isn't just its 'convenience,' but its precise balance between 'frequent travel needs' and ' understated luxury and relaxation.' It's like a discerning old friend: never showy, yet always hitting the right note at every critical juncture. The hotel's location is supremely convenient, a 'hub-level' accessibility. It's a 5-10 minute walk to Shanghai Railway Station and a 3-minute connection to the subway. Whether you're catching an early high-speed train or returning after a night out on the Bund, there's no need to rush. Yet, the moment you step into the lobby, the city's hustle and bustle fade away. The understated luxurious decor, paired with vibrant greenery, avoids excessive flair, instead using perfect lighting and a delightful aroma to instantly relax you. The most pleasant surprise is the 'granularity' of the service: the concierge can arrange shipping for forgotten items for guests who have already checked out, and the front desk service is warm and efficient. This unforced attentiveness feels warmer than standardized service. The rooms are an example of 'practical sophistication': floor-to-ceiling windows invite the city skyline in, the bedding is soft yet supportive, and it offers both a full-sized desk for business travelers and connecting room options essential for families. Even the sofa in executive suites can be converted into an extra bed free of charge, revealing a thoughtful consideration for different guest demographics in every detail. The leisure area on the 6th floor is a hidden gem: a 28℃恒温 swimming pool with the Jing'an skyline visible through floor-to-ceiling windows. In the evening, the golden sunset reflects on the water, creating stunning, high-quality photos effortlessly. The 24-hour gym ensures exercise is never a chore. It lacks the gimmicks of 'influencer hotels' but, through a profound understanding of the 'essence of travel and living,' it enables business travelers to be efficient and stress-free, families to be comfortable and at ease, and solo travelers to find a sense of relaxation. In Jing'an, where every inch of land is precious, a hotel that 'understands needs and offers warmth' truly is the premier choice for accommodation.

Jing'an District Shanghai|2.6km from city centre
The location is unbeatable. Food, drinks, and entertainment are right downstairs, and it's just out of Exit 3 of Jing'an Temple Metro Station. Luxury stores on Nanjing West Road are only a couple of stops away, and Yuyuan Road offers a quaint, old Shanghai vibe with its plane trees and charming old houses. The hotel itself is nestled between two streets, avoiding the crowds but still capturing the essence of old Shanghai. The residential building in front of it is even the apartment where Eileen Chang wrote 'Love in a Fallen City.' The service is excellent, from the doormen and front desk staff to the housekeeping aunties and restaurant chefs. The breakfast isn't extensive, but it has all the essentials, and it's all healthy food. If you prefer a Western breakfast, they offer more cheese and ham than most hotels. While the facilities are a bit older compared to newly built hotels, it's still highly recommended. I'll definitely stay here again on my next visit.

Sharon added me on WeChat during check-in, and at checkout, she specially gave me two beautiful pink cardholders for their 15th-anniversary celebration. The service was so attentive and thoughtful. Every time I come for a staycation, the hotel lobby feels bright and comfortable, and the service is excellent. I'd especially like to commend a lovely lady from Malaysia named ”Evelyn.” She's not only beautiful but also very professional and well-mannered! As soon as I arrived, she had already reserved a room for me on the 19th floor. The room was comfortable and tidy, and the housekeeping staff was also fantastic. Every time they saw me return, they knew my preferences and would specially prepare extra items I needed in the room. It truly felt like home, very warm and inviting. The coffee and tea used in the room and lounge are also imported. As for the hotel's breakfast, its quality hasn't declined over the years; in fact, it's gone up a level! The variety is richer, and the taste is superb! The hotel also has many other facilities, including a Shanghai cuisine restaurant, a Western restaurant, and a Cantonese Chinese restaurant. There's also a gym. The hotel also has a very comfortable terrace, perfect for chatting and relaxing~ I highly recommend everyone come and experience it; you definitely won't be disappointed!

Our hotel butler, Bruce, communicated pleasantly on WeChat before check-in, and although we didn't meet in person after checking in, he was always kind and enthusiastic in assisting us. The other hotel staff were also very professional, reflecting the standards of a five-star hotel. The hotel proactively upgraded our room, and the view was perfect! There were a lot of guests staying that night, but the hotel's soundproofing was excellent; we couldn't hear any noise from the adjacent rooms or the hallway, ensuring a very quiet rest environment! The hotel’s location is excellent, right opposite the M&M store. The room was clean and housekeeping was done daily. I booked Superior Double Room and had requested for a quiet room, but was assigned one facing the main street and a food centre rubbish room. The rubbish truck arrives around 5–6am every morning and the noise was quite disturbing. If you want a good sleep, I recommend avoiding rooms facing the main road. The female receptionists were lovely and helpful, though the male staff member was less friendly.

Lovely hotel in a great location. Easy walking distance to shopping and sightseeing locations, especially the Bund and Nanjing Lu. Huge shopping mall close by. Metro is an easy walk, and drop off/pick up for airport transfers is convenient. Plenty of local cafes and restaurants nearby. The hotel itself is really nice. Clean, well appointed and meticulously clean. Special mention about the staff. So friendly and helpful. Really appreciated their ability to speak English, as our spoken Chinese wasn’t good. They helped us with so much information about local dining, shopping and sightseeing locations. We arrived very late at night to check in. The staff welcomed us and gave us a free upgrade. The room was beautiful. Very roomy, good facilities and one of the most comfortable beds we’ve slept in. We had the pleasure of dining in the revolving restaurant. Food and service were impeccable. The special chocolate globe dessert is a must have. Delicious beyond description. We stayed at the Radisson Blu for 4 nights and would happily have stayed longer. Would study there again without hesitation. Thank you for an enjoyable and memorable stay at your delightful hotel.

Great location, close to everything, with a metro station nearby. The staff are very kind. The twin queen bedroom was nice, though not luxurious, with a great view. However, the bathroom and shower were smaller than in other five-star hotels. The garden, restaurants, and bars are all very nice. Jing'an District Shanghai|2.12km from city centre
Overall, this hotel offers great value for money, but it has both very prominent strengths and weaknesses. First, the positives: 1. The hotel's location is absolutely superb. It's within walking distance of Jing'an Temple, Yuyuan Road, Anfu Road, Plaza 66, CITIC Square, Jing'an Kerry Centre, and Jiuguang Department Store. Shanghai Exhibition Centre is right across the street. This is truly the heart of Jing'an, making dining, entertainment, and transportation incredibly convenient. 2. The hotel's executive lounge offers five complimentary meal services throughout the day, which is very convenient. This hotel has the highest density of foreigners I've seen in China, truly international-friendly. The staff's English proficiency is excellent, and the hotel even provides foreign currency exchange services. Now, the drawbacks: 1. As the first Ritz-Carlton to open in China in 1990, the facilities and decor definitely show their age. However, the flaws don't overshadow its merits; most things are perfectly adequate. But I do hope they'll add kettles to the rooms, especially in autumn and winter, as it would be nice to have warm water. 2. The hotel service can be a bit polarizing. There were noticeable queues during check-in and check-out. Room service is very attentive, but sometimes it felt a bit intrusive. The soundproofing in the rooms could also be improved. Overall, I still recommend it.

The Bund Area Shanghai|1.27km from city centre
Today is my last day at The Westin Bund Center Shanghai. At first, I loved the hotel, but unfortunately, the experience has slowly deteriorated. Before arrival, I had tried emailing ************************* to make a small request to celebrate an anniversary, but the email failed to deliver with an error saying the recipient’s server didn’t recognize certain characters. I’m not sure why, as the email was in English and sent from my phone. At check-in, I mentioned this to the receptionist (his name started with “C”), who was very polite and spoke to the lady behind him, asking her to reach out to Angela to assist. He then told me to head to my room and assured me I would be contacted. I waited for an hour in the room with no update, so I went out hoping to find a message upon my return, but sadly, there was still nothing. The email issue could have been my fault, and that is fine. But what is unacceptable is being promised a follow-up for such a special occasion and then never receiving it. For a hotel of this standard, I expected better communication and service consistency. Later, my son lost part of his toy, which led me to start searching around the room. While doing so, I discovered dust under every cabinet. Worse, I found what looked like someone else’s cream bottle stuck between the bed and the dresser. This makes me believe that the bottom part of the bed sheet was not changed, as housekeeping would almost certainly have noticed such an item if the bed had been properly stripped and remade. I have stayed in many Marriott properties, and this is the first time I would give only 2–3 stars. :(

The grandeur of old Shanghai can still be vividly imagined through the Peace Hotel. Many hotels ask if you'd like your luggage sent to your room, but the Peace Hotel doesn't. From the moment you arrive at the entrance and say ”checking in,” your bags are taken care of all the way to the walk-in closet in your room. If you get lost inside (like I did), don't worry about not finding help; staff members are everywhere, proactively approaching you to ask if you need anything. Our twin room wasn't huge but was cozy and comfortable. The S-shaped layout ensured the room was very quiet. In fact, the entire guest floor was quiet and elegant, with a lovely sweet cinnamon scent. **Amenities**: Great water pressure, pleasant-smelling toiletries, delicious breakfast, large bathtub. The pool is a bit small but rarely crowded, and the gym is also empty, with equipment offering views of Nanjing Road. Parking is available but very limited, and the access road is always full of tourists taking wedding or portrait photos, making driving difficult. The location is excellent, right at the Bund end of Nanjing East Road, a five-minute walk from the subway. **Cleanliness**: Extremely clean. **Service**: Excellent.

The house is being renovated, so for the weekend, I decided to stay overnight as a local resident of Shanghai. During the two years of the pandemic, I also took my child to many iconic local hotels to experience them. After considering factors such as comfort, location, cost-effectiveness, dining, service, opening hours, and overall quality, I would highly recommend this hotel to friends planning a trip to Shanghai. The staff are very attentive and responsive to any needs. The location is excellent, situated in North Bund, Hongkou District, which is not too noisy and offers easy access to various amenities. For those visiting Shanghai, there is a stand-up comedy show nearby that is definitely worth checking out. The dining options are plentiful, and you can easily reach Siji Minfu within walking distance. The North Bund City Terrace and the Waibaidu Bridge are also within walking distance. A friend in Shanghai recommended this Jinjiang Metropolo Hotel on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. It's an old-brand hotel, just 50 meters straight from the Peace Hotel, so the location is excellent. We could walk 100 meters to the riverfront and get the closest view of the Oriental Pearl Tower. I couldn't find a room with a terrace and river view overlooking the Pearl Tower when booking online. Upon check-in, the front desk said there was a chance to upgrade to an old villa room, which was a pleasant surprise! I immediately took it. My daughter and I had a wonderful trip to Shanghai. The hotel boasts a prime location, with the Pearl River View rooms offering the absolute best Bund river views – encompassing the iconic 'Pearl Trio' (Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and Shanghai World Financial Center) and a fantastic C-shaped bend of the Bund that combines both. The rooms are elegant and minimalist, with the double sinks being a particularly nice touch. Note that the hotel has two buildings, so pay attention to the room type when booking if you want a river view. The hotel staff are professional and attentive. On the morning of our check-in, we received a call asking about our arrival time and any special requests, and they arranged a high-floor room for us, which was excellent! Despite the hotel being quite busy, the front desk and concierge handled everything efficiently and smoothly. When we accidentally took the wrong elevator after breakfast, a hotel employee inside quickly assisted us. Our room attendant, Anna, also provided excellent service throughout our stay. First time staying at Kempinski hotels. Had imagined to be on a more luxurious hotel. Kempinski The One can improve on their property finishing to make it more feel like staying in luxurious hotels. The room we stayed in had smoke sensors covered in plastic and that should be illegal practice. Apart from that, mirror already had internal stain & walls are chips. Staff on the other hand were welcoming but can also be improvised to make guests feel welcomed and look after as VIP. Staff should proactively approach guests in lobby and ask if there is anything they could assist/not just standing behind desk waiting to be asked.

Pleasantly clean, but the good impression was spoiled by cigarette smoke blown out of the air con from time to time. Admittedly, we were very kindly offered a change of room. The problem of guests breaking the rules and smoking should not affect all the other guests’ air con, though: this indicates a major fault in the hotel’s entire air conditioning system, which ought to be addressed. - - - It was great to have a park right opposite, with some outdoor gym equipment. - - - The staff were responsive and polite, but unsmiling and diffident. - - - It was good to have a nice range of breakfast options, both Chinese and Western, and I particularly enjoyed the availability of sourdough bread (rare in China). - - - We also enjoyed the close proximity of the Bund, which is within walking distance.

Shanghai, a truly cosmopolitan city

Shanghai’s reputation as a modern, bustling city stems from its history as a busy global trading port, as well as influences from the various different countries that controlled it across the 19th Century. Today, visitors can see a mix of traditional and new, east and west, with a vibrant, infectious energy that just invites you to explore further.

For those looking for a foodie-focused experience, head to Yuyuan Bazaar and local night markets for authentic Shanghainese eats. Try out pork-filled Xiaolongbao soup dumplings, pan-fried Shengjianbao pork buns, and, if you’re visiting in autumn, hairy crab. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, head over to the French Concession neighbourhood for European-inspired desserts. Or if you’re eating on the go, pick up a savoury Jianbing pancake. For a special treat, Jianbing is where to go for upscale dining - great for celebrating special occasions!

For travellers wanting to explore the city’s traditional heritage, the Yu Garden dates back to the Ming-Dynasty, with pathways to lead to pavilions, koi-filled ponds, and beautiful scenic halls. There are also a number of temples to explore in Shanghai, including the Jade Buddha Temple, Wen Maio Confucian Temple, and the Longhua Temple, which is the oldest temple in Shanghai. This is not to mention all the museums and galleries, including the Shanghai Museum, that you can visit!

Best Time to Visit Shanghai

However, if you time your trip for spring or autumn, you can expect pleasant, comfortable temperatures and perhaps a little bit of rain. Each season and Shanghai, of course, offers a different experience, with a variety of local festivals throughout the year. Here’s what you can expect throughout the calendar year.
