What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM card that lets you connect to mobile networks without using a physical SIM. You can activate it by scanning a QR code online and start using mobile data in different countries.

How a Shanghai eSIM Works in China?

A Shanghai eSIM works just like a normal SIM card but in digital form. You set it up by scanning a QR code from your provider, and you can use the internet and make calls easily.

Shanghai eSIMs can hold several phone numbers and connect to more than one network, which is useful for travellers who want to save money and stay connected. Most new iPhones and Android phones support eSIMs, and they can be used in all cities across China.

Airalo provides several eSIM plans for travellers in China. You can choose between 1GB for 3 days at £3.50 and 50GB for 30 days at £38.00. These plans work on China Unicom’s 4G/LTE network and are easy to activate for use in Shanghai and across China.

However, the smaller data options may not be enough for travellers who use social media or stream videos often. Plans such as 1GB for 3 days or 3GB for 7 days can run out quickly. Prices are also quite high compared with some other eSIM providers, meaning you might pay more for each gigabyte.

Airalo offers fixed plan lengths of 3, 7, 15, or 30 days, which may not suit all travellers. Those staying for shorter or unusual trip durations might find it less convenient.

Overall, Airalo eSIMs are reliable and easy to use but may not be the best choice for travellers who need larger data allowances or more flexible plan options.

SimOptions provides several data options in China, starting from 1 GB up to 50 GB. The 1 GB plan, priced at around £3.90, is one of the most popular choices.

However, some plans have longer validity periods, usually between 7 and 30 days, which may be ideal for long-term stays. Data speed may vary as SimOptions does not specify the network operator or confirm 5G support.

These eSIMs offer data-only service, so calls and SMS are not available. Despite these limits, SimOptions remains a practical choice for travellers who need quick and easy mobile internet access in China.

Nomad offers several eSIM plans for travellers in China, with data options ranging from 1GB to 50GB. These eSIMs work on the China Unicom network and are 5G ready for fast connections.

Nomad’s China eSIMs are data only and must be installed within 30 days after purchase. The plan starts once you first connect to a network in China. Calls and SMS are not supported.

Although Nomad eSIMs are cheaper than some brands like Airalo or SimOptions, they are still more expensive than Trip.com’s eSIM plans. A validity period of 7 to 90 days may suit most people, but 1GB of data for 7 days is usually not enough for most travellers. It is best to compare your data needs before buying to choose the most suitable plan.

3 Benefits of Using a China eSIM in Shanghai

1. Instant connection when you arrive in China
With an eSIM, you can connect to the internet as soon as you land at the airport. There is no need to buy a SIM card at a shop or wait for delivery. Once the eSIM is downloaded in advance, you can go online straight away to book a taxi or find your hotel easily.

2. No risk of losing or damaging a SIM card
Traditional SIM cards are tiny and easy to lose or break, especially while travelling. An eSIM is digital, so you do not need to remove or insert anything. This makes it safer and more convenient during your trip.

3. Use dual SIM for more flexibility
An eSIM lets you use two mobile networks on one phone. You can keep your local number active while using data in China. This is useful for travellers visiting several countries as it avoids the need to change SIM cards each time.

The hotel boasts an excellent location: Xintiandi, the largest Starbucks, the Bund, and Jiefangbei are all within walking distance. The sheer scale and beauty of the lobby are immediately impressive. The breakfast spread was superb – truly enjoyable with something for everyone. The rooms are spotless and well-maintained, though the interior design feels a bit dated (for instance, it took some time to figure out how to switch the water from the faucet to the shower). We were also surprised by the very old model of television, which seemed quite unexpected. Overall, we were very pleased with our stay at the hotel.

This hotel is located in a very 'Shanghai' central area, surrounded by old villas, malls, boutiques, and bars. It's perfect for a slow-paced vacation. Overall, I'm satisfied with this hotel. Even though it's an older property, the service and cleanliness are up to par. I'll definitely come back next time. In short, my girlfriend and I had a very comfortable stay. The hotel is good, and getting around is convenient. The room is a bit small, but perfectly adequate. The main advantage is its excellent location for exploring. It's easy to find from Exit 7 of Yuyuan Metro Station, and very close to Yuyuan Garden and Chenghuang Temple. The Bund is just a ten-minute walk away. The only downside is the lack of a dedicated concierge service. When picking up stored luggage, there's no one specifically assigned to it, so you have to wait until someone finishes checking in other guests. I hope they can improve this, or perhaps the front desk could contact someone else to retrieve luggage, as the waiting time can be quite long. The front desk is on the 7th floor, and the elevator is also slow. Breakfast is just okay; it's better to order delivery. The Dahuchun shengjian (pan-fried buns) are good and delivered quickly.

The hotel was exceptionally clean and tidy. It was recommended by my foreign colleagues for my business trip to Shanghai. The surrounding area is bustling, located in the core business district of Jing'an Temple, making it very convenient for subway travel, shopping, and sightseeing. The bedding in the room was soft and comfortable, and the soundproofing was excellent, ensuring a good night's rest for my business trip. I happened to be there during a typhoon with heavy rain in Shanghai, and I particularly appreciate the doorman who promptly helped with my luggage. The front desk and room service were professional and attentive. The executive lounge experience was outstanding, with excellent food. Spent the last few days of summer vacation in Shanghai with my child and stayed at the Nanjing Hotel. The front desk staff were incredibly efficient at resolving issues. Even though it's located in the bustling Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, our sleep was completely undisturbed at night. Just 15 meters to the left is Nanjing Pedestrian Street, which has various pop-up shops and 'Gacha' stores that kids love. A 15-minute walk to the right leads to the riverfront. Let's start with the positives: the restaurant service was excellent, and breakfast was decent. The river view from the higher floors is fantastic, definitely worth it for the price. Make sure to get a high-floor room. The lounge staff on the 32nd floor were also very good, and the room itself was spacious and bright. The housekeeping staff were pleasant too. Now, let's talk about the other experiences: They said check-in was at 3 PM, but when I arrived at 5 PM, I still had to stand at the front desk for over ten minutes while they sorted out a room. I had booked a twin-bed room with a river view, but the first room they gave me was on a low floor, looking out onto rooftops. Did I travel all this way to stare at roofs? I insisted on a room change, and eventually, they offered a king bed with an extra bed. So, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad solution, you can judge for yourselves.

Decent stay, but several misses for a 5-star property My stay at the Pullman Shanghai Central was a mixed bag—nice in some areas, but disappointing in others. Check-in: The staff were very friendly and welcoming on our first day. However, I was surprised that they wouldn't let me check in until 3:00 PM. At most other hotels, I'm usually able to get an early check-in (even if I arrive at noon), so this felt a bit rigid for a property of this level. The Room: The room itself was comfortable—the bed was soft and the shower pressure was actually perfect (not too strong, not too weak, just right). Unfortunately, the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke upon arrival. To their credit, when I called the front desk, they immediately offered to change my room, which was very professional of them. Breakfast: This was the biggest letdown. The breakfast buffet felt more like what you'd expect from a 3-star hotel rather than a 5-star Pullman. The quality and selection just weren't there for me. Overall: It was an okay stay—nothing terrible, but nothing exceptional either. I wouldn't rate it a 10/10, more like a solid 6. Good service from the staff, but the check-in policy, smoke issue, and food really held it back.

Fantastic stay in this hotel with spectacular view! The unique cliff view is definitely worth every penny! We have chosen a room with direct view to the waterfall. As our stay was on a Friday, the waterfall was not available which is bit to our disappointment. But waking up this morning (Sat), the waterfall is on. So nice! And so lucky we can catch the chance to take some more photos! At night, there is a lighting show in the open cliff area. So we taken our dinner out the balcony to enjoy the light show. Nice activity at night! The service of this hotel tops all experiences with hotels. When I checked in, the staff asked if can add my WeChat account for instant customer service purposes. Then I received tips for the nearby travel spots, dining assistance, caring services such as asking me if needs to take my food delivery up to the room for me and asking if I need another taller pillow etc. The complementary fruit platter and dessert and some freebie at time of checkout are indeed a bonus surprise.

I've always wanted to experience The Portman Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai. After all, the hotel's location is truly unbeatable, and as a fan of The Ritz-Carlton, I had certain expectations for its service. First off, the location is truly beyond words. It's right in the heart of West Nanjing Road, with Plaza 66, the Exhibition Center, and Kerry Center just outside the door. Shopping and dining are incredibly convenient. Secondly, I specifically booked a room with Executive Lounge benefits, and as expected, The Ritz-Carlton's executive privileges were exceptional. Besides five meals a day (the evening canapés were especially good), I also made use of the luxury car pick-up and drop-off service within a 2-kilometer radius of the hotel. Finally, I must especially highlight the hotel's service. Although the hotel's facilities are showing their age and can't compare to many newly opened hotels, the overall service truly added a lot of value. I'd like to extend a special thanks to Audrey, the Assistant Front Office Manager, who was incredibly kind, efficient, and thoughtful. She perfectly arranged all the needs for our stay with a child. I've celebrated my proposal, anniversaries, and birthdays here, and now with the birth of my child, we still come back every year for birthdays or anniversaries. This year, after moving abroad, I brought my family back to visit and chose the Peace Hotel again. The service has improved even further. From the moment we entered, the bellhops and front desk staff were incredibly attentive. We arrived at 10:30 AM, and because we had two young children, one only 10 months old, the front desk allowed us to check in early to rest. They then arranged for a baby cot, bathtub, bottle warmer, children's toiletries, and baby care products. Every interaction showed incredible care and attention to detail. I'm so grateful to all the staff for helping us have a perfect holiday. Finally, a special shout-out to the greeters at the entrance. Because there are so many tourists wanting to come in and look around, they constantly have to ask if people are guests or dining. Our dedicated concierges, Aaron and Brin, meticulously considered every detail for our family outing, providing practical suggestions for local attractions and responding to our requests efficiently and effectively. During our leisure time, sitting by the window, watching the boats slowly cross the river, we soaked in the unique vibrant atmosphere of the Bund. The quality of the facilities combined with the warm service created truly precious memories for this trip to Shanghai.

Our stay was incredibly pleasant, and I have to give a special shout-out to Jessica at the front desk! She was warm and attentive, handled the check-in process efficiently, and patiently answered all our questions about the room type and surrounding amenities. Her demeanor was gentle and professional, and her service throughout was meticulous and thoughtful. Any requests we had were met promptly, making us feel welcomed and comfortable from the moment we arrived. Her professional service significantly enhanced our overall stay. Many thanks to Jessica for her dedicated effort; I'll definitely be recommending this place to my friends.

The check-in staff was very cold and uncommunicative, operating like robots with no expression. When checking out, a lady who seemed to be a manager (she was also there during our previous stay, so she seemed very experienced) enthusiastically asked about our stay experience and repeatedly urged us to leave a good review. Due to work, we frequently stay at this hotel. Honestly, there are no issues with the infrastructure here; it's just the service. Our foreign managers always complain about it. Personally, I feel this hotel is only suitable for short business trips where you leave early and come back late, only eating breakfast at the hotel and not using any other services. It's not suitable for family or friend trips, or for leisure travel that requires long-term enjoyment of hotel services.

3 Disadvantages of Shanghai, China eSIM

1. Limited device support
To use an eSIM, your phone or tablet must support it. Many new models do, but older or budget devices may not. You will need to check if your device works with eSIM, which can be a bit of trouble. If you need to buy a new device, that adds extra cost.

2. Not usable on multiple devices
A normal SIM card can be moved easily between phones, but eSIMs are built into one device. This means you cannot quickly switch it to another phone or tablet. For people using more than one device while travelling in China, this can be inconvenient.

3. No local phone number
Most eSIM data plans do not include a phone number, or you may have to pay extra for one. This can be a problem when making local calls, such as booking a restaurant or contacting your hotel. Regular SIM cards usually include both data and a phone number, which is more practical for some travellers.
