What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM card that lets you connect to mobile networks without using a physical SIM. You can activate it by scanning a QR code online and start using mobile data in different countries.

How a Shanghai eSIM Works in China?

A Shanghai eSIM works just like a normal SIM card but in digital form. You set it up by scanning a QR code from your provider, and you can use the internet and make calls easily.

Shanghai eSIMs can hold several phone numbers and connect to more than one network, which is useful for travellers who want to save money and stay connected. Most new iPhones and Android phones support eSIMs, and they can be used in all cities across China.

Airalo provides several eSIM plans for travellers in China. You can choose between 1GB for 3 days at £3.50 and 50GB for 30 days at £38.00. These plans work on China Unicom’s 4G/LTE network and are easy to activate for use in Shanghai and across China.

However, the smaller data options may not be enough for travellers who use social media or stream videos often. Plans such as 1GB for 3 days or 3GB for 7 days can run out quickly. Prices are also quite high compared with some other eSIM providers, meaning you might pay more for each gigabyte.

Airalo offers fixed plan lengths of 3, 7, 15, or 30 days, which may not suit all travellers. Those staying for shorter or unusual trip durations might find it less convenient.

Overall, Airalo eSIMs are reliable and easy to use but may not be the best choice for travellers who need larger data allowances or more flexible plan options.

SimOptions provides several data options in China, starting from 1 GB up to 50 GB. The 1 GB plan, priced at around £3.90, is one of the most popular choices.

However, some plans have longer validity periods, usually between 7 and 30 days, which may be ideal for long-term stays. Data speed may vary as SimOptions does not specify the network operator or confirm 5G support.

These eSIMs offer data-only service, so calls and SMS are not available. Despite these limits, SimOptions remains a practical choice for travellers who need quick and easy mobile internet access in China.

Nomad offers several eSIM plans for travellers in China, with data options ranging from 1GB to 50GB. These eSIMs work on the China Unicom network and are 5G ready for fast connections.

Nomad’s China eSIMs are data only and must be installed within 30 days after purchase. The plan starts once you first connect to a network in China. Calls and SMS are not supported.

Although Nomad eSIMs are cheaper than some brands like Airalo or SimOptions, they are still more expensive than Trip.com’s eSIM plans. A validity period of 7 to 90 days may suit most people, but 1GB of data for 7 days is usually not enough for most travellers. It is best to compare your data needs before buying to choose the most suitable plan.

3 Benefits of Using a China eSIM in Shanghai

1. Instant connection when you arrive in China
With an eSIM, you can connect to the internet as soon as you land at the airport. There is no need to buy a SIM card at a shop or wait for delivery. Once the eSIM is downloaded in advance, you can go online straight away to book a taxi or find your hotel easily.

2. No risk of losing or damaging a SIM card
Traditional SIM cards are tiny and easy to lose or break, especially while travelling. An eSIM is digital, so you do not need to remove or insert anything. This makes it safer and more convenient during your trip.

3. Use dual SIM for more flexibility
An eSIM lets you use two mobile networks on one phone. You can keep your local number active while using data in China. This is useful for travellers visiting several countries as it avoids the need to change SIM cards each time.

This time, when I brought my child to Shanghai for a trip, I still chose the Crowne Plaza Shanghai Nanjing Road. After a tiring full day at Disneyland, we arrived at the hotel and were grateful for the room upgrade to a suite. After checking out, we realized we had left a bag behind. A big thank you to staff member #066 who helped us find it and even arranged for it to be couriered home. The service here is absolutely amazing! Thank you very much! ❤️❤️

I made a special trip to leave a review after my stay, and it was a perfect experience. The hotel boasts an excellent location and a warm, tranquil interior design. The rooms are well-laid out, and the cleanliness standards are strict. The bedding and bathroom amenities are of good quality. What truly impressed me most was the hotel's overall service quality. The staff are well-trained, proactive in anticipating guests' needs, respond efficiently, and are friendly and approachable. There's no mechanical, rote service; instead, every interaction feels genuinely warm. While good facilities are fundamental, the exceptional, personalized service is undoubtedly the hotel's biggest highlight. Consequently, I extended my stay by another night, and Lynn at the front desk thoughtfully accommodated my request. This is definitely a hotel I'll choose again.

Train Station Area Shanghai|2.4km from city centre
This time, my family and I stayed in an Executive Suite at the Pullman Shanghai Jing An. First off, the hotel's location is incredibly convenient. It's right near Shanghai Railway Station, so if you're coming by high-speed rail, you're there in just five minutes after exiting the station. There's also Metro Line 1 right outside, about 50 meters away, making it easy to get to many famous Shanghai attractions. The suite consists of a bedroom and a living room, which was more than enough space for our family. The living room has a sofa bed that unfolds into a small bed, which was very practical. The room itself was clean and tidy, with complete amenities, and the kids really enjoyed the screen-mirroring TV. The front desk service was excellent, both during check-in and check-out. We'll definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Garden Hotel again during the May Golden Week holiday to watch the Longines Global Champions Tour in Shanghai. My first stay at the Garden Hotel was 30 years ago. The marble in the lobby, the Rose restaurant, and the small mosaic tiles in the corridors still maintain their grand and elegant style. That's why I always come back to this familiar place whenever I return to China. It was a family member's birthday on the day we checked in, and the hotel gave us a box of rich chocolates. I was truly touched by the hotel's thoughtfulness, it made us very happy! **Facilities**: The TOTO toilet at the Garden Hotel is my favorite because of its washlet function, making going to the restroom so comfortable! The depth and length of the bathtub are also perfect for me. The slippers are very thick and durable; I always feel reluctant to throw them away when checking out. I even take the used slippers with me to wear on planes or high-speed trains. **Hygiene**: The hygiene details are impeccable. The towels are soft and comfortable, with dense loops, making them very reassuring to use on the skin. **Environment**: The hotel has its own garden, where you can enjoy a rare tranquility in the city of Shanghai during a morning stroll! Just one traffic light to the left of the hotel entrance, there are many small bars and restaurants! There are even two Michelin-starred restaurants! It's definitely worth a walk and exploring. **Service**: I bought many things online, and they were delivered to the hotel in batches. The concierge meticulously recorded everything and delivered them to our room! When we left, the concierge helped put our luggage in the car trunk, opened and closed the doors, and politely bid us farewell. **Welcome Package**: We received canned drinks and snacks, which was a nice surprise!

I’m so glad I chose the Mehood Elegant Hotel. It was the perfect location — close to everything, not too crowded, yet not too remote either. I traveled solo with my 14-month-old toddler, and he was absolutely spoiled by all the hotel staff. Everyone treated us with so much kindness and care. Jerry checked us in and out and even gave me a cute fridge magnet. The breakfast was delicious with so many options to choose from, the rooms were cleaned daily, and bottled water was always replenished. Xiao Jun also took great care of us, and Yinhe Juan felt like an auntie to us. We looked forward to seeing them every morning at breakfast. They all made my stay feel so warm and welcoming — truly like a home away from home. I’m incredibly grateful for their hospitality, and if I ever find myself back in Shanghai again, I’ll definitely be booking Mehood. PS: the view from my room was incredible!

It was an interesting stay. Great location right off the shopping boulevard. The hotel has a bar and two restaurants. A spa, a foot spa, and gym. We had lounge access which was a nice bonus but not really worth the extra money. You get free breakfast, appetizers from 6-8, and lounge access for coffee and sodas from 1-930. The breakfast was yummy. Offered a wide selection of food with regional dishes to western foods. One of the few places I’ve traveled outside the US that has actual bacon. We never waited but there was a sign saying there were peak hours. Check in was great. I had an issue with a bag left in a DiDi and the front desk agent went out of his way to help me get in touch with driver to recover my bag. The room much like the rest of the hotel feels trapped in that fake opulence that was popular awhile back. The shower was awkward because of its shape but it did have a rain shower which was nice. One of the few hotels I’ve been in lately that didn’t have the bath stuff bolted to the wall (though it probably wouldn’t fit). Huge tub and large fluffy towels. My daughter and I both left with some bug bites from our stay not bed bugs but definitely something. The biggest drawback to the room is the lack of functional outlets. One bed has no open plugs or usb ports the other bed has a wonky extension cord with some usb ports. Found one other usb in the room in the desk area. The hotel is doing some work apparently later this month so hopefully they bring it into this century. One thing I didn’t discover until the next day is there is an entrance from the back of the hotel right on the big shopping street. There’s also a cute little food court right there where you can grab a pretty decent variety of food. One warning is didi and food delivery have a hard time with the address

After comparing many hotels for my trip to Shanghai, I ultimately chose this one, and it proved to be an excellent decision! 👍 While the room facilities aren't brand new, the overall experience was still great, and it doesn't feel dated at all. The hotel's location is also superb, right near Exit 3 of Jing'an Temple Station, making it incredibly convenient to get to various attractions. The view from the room window was beautiful, and the kids were very comfortable and happy! I'll definitely choose this hotel again on my next visit to Shanghai! Location: The hotel is located in the core business district of Xintiandi and the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China. It's super convenient, about 300 meters from the subway, with great options for dining and shopping nearby. Facilities: The hotel breakfast is excellent, and you can order a main course (the asparagus and salmon is fantastic, both in presentation and taste). The coffee is also great. My favorite part was the waterfall-like shower—so relaxing! Although the hotel is older, the facilities are well-maintained. The room lighting control is user-friendly, and the charging outlets are very convenient (multi-purpose, I'm definitely getting one!). Cleanliness: The hotel uses Diptyque toiletries. Staff proactively close the blackout curtains for you in the evening, and there's an endless supply of mineral water. I'll definitely choose this hotel again for my next business trip to Shanghai.

Fantastic location, with a variety of delicious food right outside the door. We tried the most popular pan-fried buns near the old shops on the pedestrian street – absolutely delicious! The staff helped us with our luggage, which was great. The only downsides were the lack of a laundry room and a microwave, which can be inconvenient for families traveling. However, the front desk arranged a small gift for us before checkout, which was a very thoughtful touch. There was no smoke smell in the room or hallway, which made it feel very fresh. The decor is quite old but charming.

The Bund Area Shanghai|2.48km from city centre
I booked a twin room facing the Bund, and at check-in, the front desk told me that the highest floors for this room type were 17th or 18th. However, I later saw on the Ctrip booking page that it showed up to around the 30th floor. I'm not sure which information to trust, but the room the staff member gave me had a pretty good view, despite being on a slightly lower floor. The room's furnishings were quite basic; they even had outdoor-style tables and chairs, which felt a bit cheap. The air conditioning vent was quite noisy, which might bother light sleepers. The housekeeping service needs improvement; I pressed the button for cleaning, but they didn't come on time. They only showed up right before their shift ended and did a rather perfunctory job. I'd say that considering the location and price, it still offers good value for money. However, the hotel was very busy, and we had to queue for breakfast.

As a five-star hotel, both the service and facilities are quite good. I've always heard that Westin's family rooms are great, and I got to experience one on this trip to Shanghai. I won't go into detail about the good aspects, but I do have a few suggestions: 1. For a family room, there actually aren't many kids' amenities, just a few stuffed animals. For example, a step stool could be provided in the bathroom for children. 2. The sink in the bathroom constantly accumulates water on the inner side. I'm not sure if it's due to the countertop's angle or something else, but I hope it can be adjusted. 3. The toilet paper holder in the WC is too far inward, making it inconvenient to grab paper. If you pull hard, the roll might fall off. Moving the holder forward, reversing its direction, or moving it to the right side would all be good solutions. Overall, I hope Westin continues to improve as a high-end hotel. I look forward to experiencing it again next time!

Staying at Shangri-La Shanghai was exactly what a city escape should feel like: luxurious without being fussy, courteous without feeling formal. We were on the 25th floor, and the view of the river was the best part of the day — morning light on the Huangpu, the skyline stretching out, and at night the Pearl Tower glowing just down the road. It’s quiet up there, real tranquility despite being so close to all the tourist attractions. The comfort carried through everywhere: the indoor pool and jacuzzi were perfect for unwinding, the gym had everything we needed, and the grand lobby is lined with high-end stores if you feel like browsing. But the thing we’ll remember most is the afternoons — tea time in the lobby with a live folk music performance drifting through the space. It turns the whole lobby into something calm and beautiful. Courteous staff, comfortable rooms, and a location that puts you right in the heart of Shanghai. We’ll be back.

The hotel's location is excellent, right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, and only a few minutes' walk to Metro Line 2, making getting around super convenient. The hotel's design is luxurious, grand, and elegant, upholding Marriott's quality standards. The front desk and lobby staff are all very friendly; they even offered us drinks when we checked in. Cora, the guest service manager at the front desk, was incredibly efficient and professional during our check-in process. Because my other booking was split into three separate reservations, she expertly consolidated them for a continuous three-night stay, saving me the hassle of changing rooms daily. Even though I forgot to add a note when booking, she managed to put my sister and me on the same floor. Huge thanks to her for getting our three-day Shanghai trip off to such a great start! The hotel breakfast is abundant and delicious, with Shanghai-style scallion oil noodles available daily, plus many freshly made noodle and wonton stations. There's a wide selection of both Chinese and Western options. The cleaner responsible for my room, 2805, did an outstanding job; after a day out, we returned to a clean and tidy room, which was a pleasant surprise! The city view from the room is also beautiful. The cleaning quality remained consistently high even during a multi-day stay. Linens and toiletries were replenished daily in full quantity, children's items were sanitized, and water glasses and drinking water were replaced daily. My overall experience with the business I conducted at this location was incredibly pleasant, and I absolutely have to commend Audrey, the front desk staff member. Her thorough and thoughtful service throughout left a deep impression on me, and I'm writing this review to express my gratitude. As soon as I walked through the door, the front desk staff immediately stood up and greeted me warmly. Her tone was gentle and friendly, and she maintained a sincere smile, instantly easing any awkwardness I felt as a first-time visitor. I hadn't brought all the necessary documents with me and had many questions about the process, required materials, and fee standards. She clearly explained each step of the process item by item. For technical terms I didn't understand, she rephrased them in easy-to-understand language and explained them repeatedly. Thoughtfully, she took out a pen and paper, wrote down a detailed list of materials I needed to provide, and noted important considerations for each item, saving me from making multiple trips. While I was waiting for the procedures to be processed, she saw me standing and proactively guided me to the seating area, even offering me drinking water. Her attentiveness was evident in every detail. When handling the business, she was skilled and efficient, verifying information carefully and meticulously. She double-checked every detail with me to prevent any errors. Midway through, I added several additional questions related to various different services, and she answered each one in detail, proactively informing me about related benefits and precautions, showing incredible thoughtfulness. Throughout our entire interaction, her demeanor was appropriate, polite, and humble, and her speaking pace was just right. She showed empathy for the customer's difficulties and displayed no impatience or perfunctoriness. Her professionalism and service awareness were impeccable. It's precisely because of such a diligent, responsible, and thoughtful front desk employee that the overall image of the establishment has been greatly enhanced, making my entire process smooth and worry-free. Such excellent service deserves high praise. If any friends or family have similar needs in the future, I will definitely recommend this establishment, and I hope the store will generously reward this dedicated staff member!

People's Square Shanghai|0.62km from city centre
Guests: 2 adults, 1 child (6 years old) Room type: King Bed (Double Bed) --- ⭐ Location: Absolutely Perfect The hotel is right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. M&M's, LEGO, and the Bund are just a short walk away. It's incredibly convenient for dining, shopping, and taking the subway. The area downstairs is lively, but we didn't find it noisy. However, if you're sensitive to noise, I recommend asking the hotel for a higher floor room in advance (their highest is the 6th floor). ⭐ Room: Small, but Clean The room isn't very large. After placing two suitcases and a stroller, it was pretty difficult to move around. One unique feature: the sink isn't inside the bathroom; it's right by the entrance on the right. If this bothers you, you might want to reconsider. We specifically asked the hotel staff, and if you want a larger room, they suggest the family room. The main differences are the location within the hotel and the size of the desk. If you're traveling with kids, I honestly recommend booking a family room directly. As for cleanliness, it was impeccable: · Towels were replaced daily, and they were the individually packaged, disposable kind. · A cleaner came to tidy up every day. · Water bottles were replenished daily. The hot water and air conditioning worked perfectly, no issues at all. ⭐ Service: Truly Worth Mentioning This was the most surprising aspect of our entire stay. We don't have Chinese phone numbers, and initially, we were worried about ordering food delivery or making purchases. However, the hotel staff were incredibly proactive in helping us. Not only was their attitude excellent, but they genuinely solved our problems: · Helped with food delivery: They used their own phones to order meals for us directly. · Helped buy a suitcase: On one occasion, we needed to buy a suitcase, and a supervisor named Ruan (阮) even used his personal account to order it for us. This level of service goes beyond ”basic courtesy”; they were truly dedicated to helping guests. We arrived at the hotel past 1 AM, and the front desk quickly processed our check-in without any issues, even though we were using passports. Luggage storage was also smooth: On the day we went to Wuzhen, we left our large suitcases in the lobby. They tagged them, and we simply picked them up upon our return. There are many surveillance cameras throughout the hotel, making it feel quite secure. ⭐ Value for Money: No Breakfast, No Restaurant, but Location and Service Made Up for It This hotel doesn't offer breakfast or have a restaurant. While there are many dining options downstairs, the hotel itself doesn't provide breakfast. Considering the price, the location, and this level of service, it was very reasonable, even exceeding our expectations. --- ✅ In Summary If you want to stay near Nanjing Road and can accept a slightly smaller room, this hotel is definitely worth considering. Especially if you're traveling with children and don't have a Chinese phone number, their service will give you great peace of mind. However, for family trips, I recommend booking a family room directly.

She Shan, Songjiang University Town Shanghai|26.04km from city centre
Nice little hotel, but not for me. It is located right next to Sam's Club and that's always nice. Being able to eat Sam's pizza and hot dogs is always nice. The bed, while big, was not comfortable to me. I know everyone has their preferences on softness levels. When I stay at a hotel, l like mattresses I melt into because they are soft. Not that way here. But I know some people prefer these mattresses. They had a restaurant and bar that looked nice, but I didn't visit as I had dinner and drinks with others not staying at hotel. The real deal breaker for me was no refrigerator in my room. Some rooms may have them. Mine did not (that I could find at least). When I stay at a hotel for more than one night, a refrigerator is a must, either for leftover food or cold drinks. Also, for a superior queen room, I think it said balcony or terrace and sofa, none of which my room had. And for garden view... Definitely not a pretty garden, more like a cement walkway and Sam's. And lastly, no room service... I know it's not advertised as having room service... But paying nearly 500rmb a night, just having a club sandwich or dumplings available late night would be nice. Maybe work out a deal with Sam's. Colleague stayed at a hotel less than 10 mins away that was cheaper, had a bathtub, had a late night menu, and had a refrigerator. Staff were great! Very helpful! If I go back to area, not sure if I would choose again. The access to Sam's is nice. I'd like to try out their bar and restaurant. But the no refrigerator scares me off a bit.

Hongqiao International Airport Area Shanghai|15.59km from city centre
I stayed at the Hyatt House Shanghai Hongqiao CBD and found it to be a very solid choice, especially for business travel. The location is excellent, situated directly opposite the railway station and the airport, which makes onward travel extremely convenient. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, providing everything needed for a short business stay. The staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient, which adds to the overall positive experience. Breakfast is perfectly adequate and does the job well. For business trips in particular, or if you need to continue your journey by train the next day as I did, this hotel is a very convenient and comfortable option. Overall, I had a good stay and can definitely recommend it.

The hotel's overall decor features a minimalist yet grand Chinese aesthetic. The rooms are spacious and bright, and the service is excellent in all aspects. The breakfast spread is abundant and delicious. Nearby, you can explore the Xinshang Ancient Town. Disneyland and the Wildlife Park aren't too far either, and there's even a scheduled shuttle service to Disneyland. The family room with one large and one small bed is perfect for a family of three.

The Bund Area Shanghai|1.78km from city centre
Facilities: Steeped in history with a vintage charm. The rooms are meticulously restored to their original grandeur, featuring high-end toiletries as standard, an indoor pool, and the iconic jazz bar. Cleanliness: Despite being nearly a century old, guests consistently report no musty or moldy odors. Rooms are described as ”very comfortable and clean,” with daily housekeeping and turn-down service being meticulous. Ambiance: Impeccable. Located at the prime intersection of the Bund and Nanjing East Road, it's just a 2-3 minute walk to the Bund viewing platform. The entire building is a historical landmark itself, and the common areas exude old Shanghai charm, perfect for photos. Service: The staff are warm and professional. Even with daily visitors coming in just to take pictures, they are always treated with politeness. They also offer free historical tours, providing insight into the hotel's rich past.

My stay was incredibly pleasant, and the hotel facilities were excellent. The front desk team provided truly warm service. The staff were energetic and welcoming, handling all matters efficiently and in an orderly fashion. They proactively offered helpful travel advice, showing thoughtful attention to every detail. My entire stay was comfortable, and the high-quality service made my trip even more perfect. The Bund Area Shanghai|1.58km from city centre
This hotel's location is absolutely top-tier among Shanghai's luxury hotels! Housed in the historic No. 2 Bund building, it boasts a century of history, directly overlooking the Huangpu River, and is right in the city center. It completely outshines newer hotels in Lujiazui and Jing'an in terms of both historical charm and convenience. What truly impressed me was the service – Aaron, Coco, and Emily from the concierge team were incredibly attentive throughout my stay. That's definitely a huge plus!

Train Station Area Shanghai|2.52km from city centre
I recently stayed at InterContinental Shanghai Jing’an and had a very pleasant experience overall. One of the biggest advantages of this hotel is its location. It is conveniently situated near Shanghai Railway Station and provides easy access to the metro, making it simple to get around the city whether you’re visiting for business or leisure. There are also plenty of dining and shopping options within a short distance. The staff were consistently friendly, welcoming, and helpful throughout my stay. Check-in was smooth, and whenever I had a question, the team was happy to assist with a smile. Their professionalism and hospitality definitely made the stay more enjoyable. The room was spacious, comfortable, and well maintained. The bed was very comfortable, and I appreciated the cleanliness of both the room and bathroom. The hotel has the upscale feel you would expect from an InterContinental property, while still feeling warm and comfortable. Bidet was a huge plus. Along with the shower While some areas of the hotel are starting to show a little age compared to newer luxury hotels in Shanghai, it is still very well kept and offers excellent value considering the location, facilities, and service. Overall, I had a great stay and would happily choose InterContinental Shanghai Jing’an again on a future visit to Shanghai. The convenient location and friendly staff were the highlights for me.

Hongqiao District Shanghai|7.13km from city centre
The location is excellent, about a 30-minute drive to Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. Speaking of Hongqiao, this area caters to Japanese residents, with many long-term expats and business travelers. My impression was that a good number of guests at this hotel were Japanese. I'm not sure about dinner, but breakfast is served on the 1st floor and the 33rd floor (business floor?), and the taste is quite mild. Overall, the hotel is clean, but the facilities are showing their age. The bathroom floor would accumulate water, which was a real headache. However, when I reported it to the front desk, they fixed it immediately, so that was good!

3 Disadvantages of Shanghai, China eSIM

1. Limited device support
To use an eSIM, your phone or tablet must support it. Many new models do, but older or budget devices may not. You will need to check if your device works with eSIM, which can be a bit of trouble. If you need to buy a new device, that adds extra cost.

2. Not usable on multiple devices
A normal SIM card can be moved easily between phones, but eSIMs are built into one device. This means you cannot quickly switch it to another phone or tablet. For people using more than one device while travelling in China, this can be inconvenient.

3. No local phone number
Most eSIM data plans do not include a phone number, or you may have to pay extra for one. This can be a problem when making local calls, such as booking a restaurant or contacting your hotel. Regular SIM cards usually include both data and a phone number, which is more practical for some travellers.
