What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM card that lets you connect to mobile networks without using a physical SIM. You can activate it by scanning a QR code online and start using mobile data in different countries.

How a Shanghai eSIM Works in China?

A Shanghai eSIM works just like a normal SIM card but in digital form. You set it up by scanning a QR code from your provider, and you can use the internet and make calls easily.

Shanghai eSIMs can hold several phone numbers and connect to more than one network, which is useful for travellers who want to save money and stay connected. Most new iPhones and Android phones support eSIMs, and they can be used in all cities across China.

Airalo provides several eSIM plans for travellers in China. You can choose between 1GB for 3 days at £3.50 and 50GB for 30 days at £38.00. These plans work on China Unicom’s 4G/LTE network and are easy to activate for use in Shanghai and across China.

However, the smaller data options may not be enough for travellers who use social media or stream videos often. Plans such as 1GB for 3 days or 3GB for 7 days can run out quickly. Prices are also quite high compared with some other eSIM providers, meaning you might pay more for each gigabyte.

Airalo offers fixed plan lengths of 3, 7, 15, or 30 days, which may not suit all travellers. Those staying for shorter or unusual trip durations might find it less convenient.

Overall, Airalo eSIMs are reliable and easy to use but may not be the best choice for travellers who need larger data allowances or more flexible plan options.

SimOptions provides several data options in China, starting from 1 GB up to 50 GB. The 1 GB plan, priced at around £3.90, is one of the most popular choices.

However, some plans have longer validity periods, usually between 7 and 30 days, which may be ideal for long-term stays. Data speed may vary as SimOptions does not specify the network operator or confirm 5G support.

These eSIMs offer data-only service, so calls and SMS are not available. Despite these limits, SimOptions remains a practical choice for travellers who need quick and easy mobile internet access in China.

Nomad offers several eSIM plans for travellers in China, with data options ranging from 1GB to 50GB. These eSIMs work on the China Unicom network and are 5G ready for fast connections.

Nomad’s China eSIMs are data only and must be installed within 30 days after purchase. The plan starts once you first connect to a network in China. Calls and SMS are not supported.

Although Nomad eSIMs are cheaper than some brands like Airalo or SimOptions, they are still more expensive than Trip.com’s eSIM plans. A validity period of 7 to 90 days may suit most people, but 1GB of data for 7 days is usually not enough for most travellers. It is best to compare your data needs before buying to choose the most suitable plan.

3 Benefits of Using a China eSIM in Shanghai

1. Instant connection when you arrive in China
With an eSIM, you can connect to the internet as soon as you land at the airport. There is no need to buy a SIM card at a shop or wait for delivery. Once the eSIM is downloaded in advance, you can go online straight away to book a taxi or find your hotel easily.

2. No risk of losing or damaging a SIM card
Traditional SIM cards are tiny and easy to lose or break, especially while travelling. An eSIM is digital, so you do not need to remove or insert anything. This makes it safer and more convenient during your trip.

3. Use dual SIM for more flexibility
An eSIM lets you use two mobile networks on one phone. You can keep your local number active while using data in China. This is useful for travellers visiting several countries as it avoids the need to change SIM cards each time.

One word. Excellent. Marvellous customer service. Service orientated hotel. Location is good too as it’s located exactly at nanjing pedestrian street with access to metro line 2. Special credit to Justin Wu during my check in. Fast check in and voluntarily upgraded us even without us requesting. Kudos for great attentive attitude. We were also given late check out as my flight back is late at night. Appreciate his understanding. Smooth check out process too especially with a sweet young beautiful lady named starry cui. Can converse well in English too. Gave us a complimentary plushie which makes a great memorable gift. Will definitely stay in crowne plaza if I am to drop by Shanghai again

This year, we decided to book our New Year's Eve dinner at the Radisson, and to save ourselves the hassle of traveling back and forth, we decided to stay there as well. JUDY called me a day in advance to ask about my room preferences, which eased my anxiety and built up my anticipation for the stay. We booked a Deluxe Suite, facing south towards People's Park, offering a really great view. The room was very tidy, with a living room and bedroom, and a standard double bathroom with both a shower and a bathtub, but no bidet. Although the hotel isn't new, it's clear that the room facilities are very well-maintained. The shower brand is Radisson's own, and it worked quite well. Room service is also worth mentioning; their response time was very quick, and they offered turndown service. We also received complimentary welcome fruits. The hotel's location is excellent. You don't even need to go outside to access New World City directly, making shopping and dining very convenient. We had lunch on the 8th and 9th floors of New World City for the past few days. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is right outside. On New Year's Eve, we went to Nanjing Road and the Bund, experiencing Shanghai's New Year's atmosphere up close, which was a rare treat. The breakfast was very plentiful, and I was pleasantly surprised to find my favorite crystal cakes. The lack of free parking was a bit unexpected. While it might be due to the location, other hotels I've stayed at recently, like the Conrad and Peace Hotel, also have excellent locations but offer free parking. However, the parking garage entrance is very narrow, and the turns are quite tight, which could be challenging for less-skilled drivers. So, it's probably best not to drive if you can avoid it. This was my first stay at a Radisson Group hotel, and it left a very positive impression on me.

This was my first time staying at this hotel, and I have to give the Pullman Shanghai Jing'an a full five stars! What impressed me the most was the attentive and professional service. The front desk staff were patient and thoughtful, proactively offering travel tips. When I accidentally left something behind, they handled it with care and helped me retrieve it quickly, which was incredibly reassuring. The room was clean, comfortable, and well-maintained with new facilities. Breakfast was abundant and delicious, and the common areas were quiet and stylish. Despite being in the heart of the central business district, it was surprisingly peaceful. Both the hardware quality and the soft services were impeccable, truly making you feel at home. It's my top choice for hotels in Shanghai, and I highly recommend it to everyone. I'll definitely choose to stay here again next time I have the opportunity!

The location is superb and incredibly convenient. The service is warm and friendly, and the staff's attitude is excellent. It's a vintage hotel with a touch of Shanghainese charm. They were incredibly responsive to all my needs; whether it was the cleaning staff on my floor or the service staff in the executive lounge, everyone provided immense help during my stay! I highly recommend this old-school hotel. While the facilities are a bit dated, they are very well-maintained. It's also worth noting that some floors are undergoing renovation, so you might want to inquire about that before checking in. Oh, and you absolutely must try the breakfast; it's really delicious, especially the scallion pancake with egg!

I have to give Carl a great review! Mike, the front desk manager, was amazing at handling a service issue. The AC in my standard room was broken, and they upgraded me to a mini-suite – how awesome is that?! The room attendant was also very warm and attentive. Breakfast was good too, but make sure to go early; it gets incredibly crowded around 9 AM. The location is excellent, and parking is completely free, which is a huge plus because parking in this area would normally cost over 100 yuan a day. I only paid 1190 yuan for the room – such a fantastic deal!

The hotel service was excellent, from the front desk to the manager and room service – everyone was incredibly helpful and accommodating. Our room offered stunning views of Pudong's 'three-piece suite' (referring to the iconic skyscrapers) and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. The location is unbeatable, just a stone's throw away from Yu Garden and Chenghuang Temple. It was so convenient, we visited daily! We were lucky enough to catch the Chinese New Year lantern festival, and entering before 2 PM meant free admission to see the lanterns. Yu Garden and Chenghuang Temple truly encapsulate the essence of Shanghai's culture. Staying at a hotel just steps away meant we didn't have to wait an hour for a taxi back, which was incredibly convenient. Seriously. The front desk even offered special White Rabbit milk candies, which were a huge hit with both local and international guests.

The hotel has a great location, very close to Nanjing Pedestrian Road, which makes it convenient for shopping and walking around. The room is clean and well-maintained, and overall the stay was comfortable. One small downside is that the lighting in the room is a bit dim, which makes it slightly difficult to get ready, especially for doing makeup. The staff are very helpful, especially when assisting with Taobao deliveries. I also requested a one-hour late check-out, and they kindly allowed it without any extra charge, which I really appreciated. Overall, it’s a good hotel with friendly staff and an excellent location. 😊

Overall Experience: My stay was defined by a feeling of tranquil escape. The hotel's greatest strength is its atmosphere. Being in a historic building tucked away in a quiet, leafy neighborhood just off the famous Nanjing Road created a perfect balance. I could easily walk to the buzz and shopping, but returned each time to a serene, garden-filled sanctuary. It felt more like a peaceful retreat than a standard city hotel. Service: The service was consistently attentive and polite. Staff were professional and quick to help with requests. The check-in and check-out process was smooth. While the service wasn't overly familiar, it was reliably good and matched the hotel's calm, understated style. I felt well taken care of. Facilities: The facilities are well curated but compact, focusing on quality over quantity.

Big shout out to the housekeeping staff! The coffee machine was broken, and two of them actively helped me sort it out. Now, for the breakfast department, I have a big complaint! 😡 Because I had an early train to catch the next day, I specifically ordered a takeaway breakfast the night before. But when I got to the station, bumpy ride and all, I opened the breakfast bag and was speechless. Inside was a bruised pear, a cup of black coffee, and three identical, dry croissants! Even McDonald's knows to pack sugar and milk with coffee – do you five-star hotels not? With so many Western and Chinese options for breakfast, I only get three stale croissants? No fresh fruit? Guests are expected to eat fruit that's almost rotten?! I've stayed at many five-star hotels, and this packed breakfast quality is even worse than a Hampton Inn! 😤😠🤬

Facilities: The bathroom sink wasn't very practical; water splashed everywhere easily. Environment: The breakfast area and lobby bar are shared and quite small. Service: The hotel service was really good. The front desk staff, especially Loretta, were very professional. She deserves a huge commendation – even on her days off, she'd message me to say I could reach out to her anytime if I needed anything. The concierge service was also excellent, promptly anticipating guests' needs, making both check-in and check-out very smooth. Housekeeping was great too; turndown service was always done by the time I returned to my room. Breakfast is a crucial indicator of a hotel's quality, reflecting its attention to detail and standards through its offerings and quality control. After I spoke with the hotel, there was an improvement the next day. The bakery items were truly outstanding; the pastries were perfectly flaky, and both the pancakes and waffles were delicious. The fried dishes also had a great texture.

So close to perfection.... So close. I have been putting off staying at this hotel for years, and that is a regret. This hotel is amazing. Location, Great. Staff, friendly. Beds, comfortable. 24 hour room service, fantastic. Bidet toilet seat, amazing. For the price, this hotel is a steal. Better service and better rooms than hotels that are double the price. My biggest problem. The bathtub is too small. It looks big, but for a 190cm guy, it's just way way too small. Looks big in pictures... Not in reality. They probably have bigger tubs in different rooms (maybe executive or suites). I will contact them before booking again to make sure tub is big. The pool is great. The Sauna and steam room in the changing rooms are great. I do wish there was a jacuzzi or some hot pool... Either in the gendered changing rooms or by the pool. Recommendations: the bathrobes are small, get some plus sized ones. More coffee in the room, 2 pods aren't enough. More water in rooms, 4 small bottles aren't enough. Allow cooling during winter, I know it's not easy, but many expats don't want 25° rooms. Finally... For room service. EGGS BENEDICT!!!! You already have a good room service breakfast menu... But you need eggs Benedict. I judge hotels room service based on club sandwiches. This club sandwich was mid tier. Not bad, not fantastic. Granted I ordered the late night club sandwich. Maybe there is a difference. But this is the same with all of the other room service food I ordered. Good. Just a few steps away from great. But super happy there is a 24hr menu! Next time I stay I will experiment with regular hours food vs late night. In all. This hotel is amazing! Definitely will stay again. Just hopefully I can get a bigger bathtub next time.

Check-in Experience: Upon entering the hotel, I was immediately drawn to its luxurious yet welcoming ambiance. The front desk staff were warm and professional, promptly handled my check-in, and thoroughly answered all my questions regarding the hotel's facilities. The room's decor was elegant and well-arranged, providing a perfect space for relaxation. Room Facilities: My room was spacious and bright, with a comfortable bed that ensured a peaceful night's sleep after a busy day. The room was fully equipped with all necessities, including high-speed Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, and a mini-fridge, meeting all my needs. Of particular note was the modern bathroom design, which offered high-quality toiletries, making my showers very relaxing. Special Surprise: During my stay, the hotel also prepared a special surprise for me – an anniversary room setup. The bed was covered with rose petals, heart-shaped balloons and a cute little bear adorned the headboard, accompanied by a bottle of red wine and a plate of exquisite desserts. This thoughtful and considerate gesture deeply moved me and made this stay even more memorable. Dining Experience: The hotel's restaurant offered a rich selection of breakfast options, from Chinese to Western, all fresh and delicious. Stayed at the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, also known as the 'Deep Pit Hotel,' during 'Xiao Nian' (Minor New Year). Located 88 meters below ground, it's a truly unique architectural marvel, recognized as one of the world's top ten architectural wonders – a definite must-see! The check-in process was incredibly smooth; we were able to get into our room before 12 PM. Every bed in the room faces the deep pit, and the balcony is spacious. From there, you can see a waterfall, a pool of water at the bottom of the pit, and the Ferris wheel, skywalk, and bungee jumping at the Deep Pit Shimao Wonderland amusement park across the way. You can even lie in bed and enjoy the waterfall view. The room amenities are excellent, with a shower and bathtub, and a well-designed wet/dry separation. Overall, the facilities are top-notch, and the breakfast is plentiful. The real-time cliff light and shadow show at night is particularly impressive and spectacular. Drawing inspiration from the 'Classic of Mountains and Seas,' it showcases unique oriental mythical stories. The butler service was outstanding. I lost my ID when I visited the Wonderland park the day before, and our butler, Bruce, was incredibly proactive in helping me search for it. He found it the very next day, which was a huge help. Stayed at the Ritz-Carlton Pudong for a night during the Chinese New Year. Even though I usually prefer newer hotels, the Ritz's unique charm convinced me. The check-in process was a pleasant surprise. The Ritz-Carlton staff always impresses me with their professionalism and efficiency, and Jennie was no exception. The process was seamless. I had booked a Bund river view room, and Jennie explained that due to the high volume of guests during the New Year, room cleaning was taking longer. As it was already evening, she kindly upgraded me directly to a Pearl Bund river view suite without any wait. The view from this suite is among the best in the hotel, and my impression of the hotel instantly skyrocketed. The room was incredibly spacious, and the stunning views of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the Bund go without saying. The suite's amenities were immaculate and refined, featuring smart bathroom fixtures, with virtually no signs of age (a noticeable difference from standard rooms I've stayed in before). The bedding was perfectly comfortable, ensuring a great night's sleep. Breakfast is definitely a highlight at the Ritz. The variety was extensive, and the ingredients were fresh. The salmon melted in my mouth, and the brie was perfectly soft, unlike the half-hard texture often found in other hotels. I loved the mango pudding, paired with an Americano and the beautiful scenery outside the window, making for a truly satisfying morning. Check-out coincided with peak guest traffic. While waiting, a foreign staff member approached me and completed the check-out process in fluent Chinese, thoughtfully reminding me about storing my belongings. Efficient and considerate, elegant and luxurious – the Ritz-Carlton Pudong is definitely a worthwhile choice.

Wujiaochang Commercial Area Shanghai|9.08km from city centre
This hotel is undoubtedly in a prime location in the heart of Wujiaochang. True to its name, which includes the word ”design,” both the rooms and hallways are indeed very stylish. As for the service, it's absolutely impeccable, especially breakfast, or rather brunch, which is served until 1 PM. This is incredibly rare and a huge plus for those who like to sleep in.

Extremely clean and tidy, with fantastic value for money! The room was spotless and odor-free, the bedding was soft and super comfortable, and the bathroom's wet/dry separation was a thoughtful touch. The front desk service was warm and attentive, making check-in and check-out incredibly fast. The surrounding area has convenient transportation, making it easy to find food and go shopping. The overall experience exceeded my expectations; I'll definitely choose this place again next time I'm here. Highly recommended!

Everbright Convention and Exhibition Center Shanghai|12.35km from city centre
This hotel is perfectly suited to my taste. The lobby is predominantly decorated in black and red, with even the glass panels featuring a red tint. The lobby area is incredibly spacious, boasting many distinct seating zones, which made me feel like I could spend an entire day just lounging there. The hotel is conveniently located right next to a large shopping mall, MixC City, offering a wide array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. Plus, it's just a few subway stops from either the train station or the airport. Getting to the hotel from Ziteng Road Metro Station: exit and enter the shopping mall through its main illuminated entrance. For the most straightforward path, *before* you reach the pedestrian street of the metro commercial area, follow the signs to take the elevator up to the second floor. From there, walk through the parking lot between Buildings A and B, and you'll arrive directly at the hotel, with no stairs to navigate. Overall, I feel the hotel's marketing efforts are insufficient. This hidden gem truly deserves to be discovered by more people.

The hotel's location is excellent, making it very convenient for my mom's class reunion. Her classmates, all in their eighties, met up on Nanjing Road, enjoying a quiet spot amidst the bustling city. There are plenty of local eateries and restaurants nearby, so you can easily find food right outside. My mom was very satisfied with her solo trip this time.

She Shan, Songjiang University Town Shanghai|26.04km from city centre
During the off-peak May Day holiday, the first choice for an outing to Sheshan is Kaiyuan Mingting! The hotel lobby is spacious and bright, the front desk Xiaoqian is warm and thoughtful, the check-in procedure is efficient and convenient, and the business king room with a large terrace is upgraded for free. The room is clean and comfortable. When I saw the children, I took the initiative to provide children's supplies. There are many plugs in the room, which is very convenient. The network speed is also very fast. It is suitable for business and parents. The hotel is next to Qingpu Sam's Club, which is very convenient for shopping. It takes 20 minutes to drive to Sheshan Forest Park. Overall, the overall experience exceeded expectations, and I will choose here next time!

Hongqiao International Airport Area Shanghai|15.59km from city centre
This is our re-visit of the hotel. I don’t know why, but it just felt homey instantly (usually it will take me a night to get used to the room), it’s just comfortable with peaceful ambiance and soft lighting. The breakfast was amazing and it really helped to start our day in a pleasant way! We also had a pleasant interaction with the room-service robot who delivered bottle water to our room twice 😄 You just had to try it!!! too bad I couldn’t hug the robot 😄 I also like the Hotel’s good and combined use of technology and human service. I called from the room to ask for bottle water, and it was answered by a lady who said they will send a Robot to deliver. (In another hotel, I also made a call from the room with a small request, but it was an auto answer where you had to talk to a machine and dial the numbers when prompted, which often ended in frustration). Other than that, just one suggestion, I thought the quality of the toiletries and slippers provided could be better compared to the peer hotels, yea, especially for the slippers, they felt too synthetic compared to the slippers from the other two hotels I stayed at during this travel. Overall, great stay, pleasant experience and will revisit!

Jing'an District Shanghai|2.12km from city centre
The location gets a 99/100! This place is a major hub, super convenient for getting anywhere, surrounded by large shopping malls. Jing'an Temple, the Park Hotel, Wukang Road Historical and Cultural Zone, Anfu Road, and Huaihai Middle Road are all basically within a half-hour's journey, which is perfect for aimless wanderers like me~ If you're coming by subway, take Exit 6 at Jing'an Temple station; it's the closest way to walk. Room: The facilities are definitely old and small. The hairdryer is an old-fashioned one from the last century that you have to hold down the button to use, so I didn't wash my hair that night. The basic room type is only 38 square meters, and the luggage rack needs to be pulled out, otherwise, even a 20-inch suitcase can't be opened flat. Despite being old, it's very well maintained and clean, with no visible stains. Service: Top marks! Every staff member was genuinely friendly, proactively helping with luggage, guiding check-in, greeting guests, and holding doors open when leaving. The details of an old-school hotel are evident everywhere. Breakfast: The freshly made waffles and pancakes with cream are absolutely delicious; the cream is perfectly light. The xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) are also worth trying. Surroundings: The hotel is connected to Shanghai Centre, so there are restaurants, cafes, and a small supermarket right outside. It's a bit like the expat supermarkets in Beijing's embassy district, with a lot of imported foods, which makes sense given the large number of foreigners in the area.

The Bund Area Shanghai|1.78km from city centre
For my little one's birthday, we chose the renowned and historic Fairmont Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations because I'm usually partial to Ritz-Carlton hotels and haven't been particularly impressed with Jinjiang Group hotels in China. However, from the moment I stepped in, the warmth of the staff during check-in immediately made me feel welcome. Every staff member greeted guests with a smile. We toured various areas of the hotel, creating wonderful memories. In the afternoon, while relaxing, a staff member surprised me with a birthday cake. These small details truly showcase the Peace Hotel's service philosophy – I'm very grateful. In the evening, we experienced the Old Shanghai vibe at the jazz bar, where the average age of the musicians was 82. My only minor disappointment was that one of the younger waiters there didn't quite match the high service standards of the rest of the hotel. The breakfast was also quite substantial, and a special shout-out to the young server, Eilo. I eat extremely small portions of everything, and at other hotels, they can't make the tiny omelets I like. He accommodated my picky request, and I'm very thankful to him – he deserves praise. The breakfast lobby manager was consistently attentive, promptly addressing guests' needs. I mentioned that for breakfast, I only wanted a croissant with butter, but the one I received was a bit burnt. He immediately had the restaurant make two fresh ones for me, which I found incredibly touching. When a hotel manager can promptly handle issues and ensure guest satisfaction, that hotel is surely destined for greatness. Highly recommended!

For our winter break, I wanted to treat my child to a luxurious hotel experience, and we ended up choosing the Grand Hyatt Jin Mao. Overall, the experience was absolutely fantastic. Checking in at the 54th-floor reception, the view from the window was already stunning. Then, heading to the 78th floor and seeing the hotel's circular architectural design, I was amazed again. When we entered our room and opened the curtains, the Shanghai World Financial Center stood right before our eyes, and we could also see the Huangpu River – the expansive view was simply breathtaking! The room itself was spacious, elegantly simple, and well-equipped. My son especially loved the bathtub. The hotel also offers a free swimming pool, hot springs, and a gym, which we were all very happy with!

This hotel is truly at the heart of the Bund! The century-old architecture creates an amazing atmosphere, perfect for effortless photos. The room was clean and spacious, the bed super comfortable, and the soundproofing excellent – a quiet oasis in a bustling area. The service was gentle and meticulous, from the doorman to housekeeping, everyone was very professional. The location is absolutely unbeatable; step out and you're right on the Bund, making sightseeing and dining incredibly convenient. The quality truly lives up to the brand. My stay was absolutely perfect, and it's definitely worth coming back to.

Spacious, bright, and quiet, with convenient public transportation – the bus stop is 5 minutes away and the subway station is 10 minutes. The night view from the window is beautiful. The breakfast is delicious and plentiful, there's plenty of hot water, strong air conditioning, and a smart toilet. My stay was very comfortable, especially my child loved it! This was largely thanks to Kitty's thoughtful service; she was responsive and friendly. Definitely five stars!

3 Disadvantages of Shanghai, China eSIM

1. Limited device support
To use an eSIM, your phone or tablet must support it. Many new models do, but older or budget devices may not. You will need to check if your device works with eSIM, which can be a bit of trouble. If you need to buy a new device, that adds extra cost.

2. Not usable on multiple devices
A normal SIM card can be moved easily between phones, but eSIMs are built into one device. This means you cannot quickly switch it to another phone or tablet. For people using more than one device while travelling in China, this can be inconvenient.

3. No local phone number
Most eSIM data plans do not include a phone number, or you may have to pay extra for one. This can be a problem when making local calls, such as booking a restaurant or contacting your hotel. Regular SIM cards usually include both data and a phone number, which is more practical for some travellers.

The eSIM card is very easy to use. After ordering from Trip.com, I received the eSIM card with a QR code in 5 minutes. I installed the eSIM before leaving. On the day of arrival in China, I activated the card, and it worked immediately. My experience with it is limited because I only use it for Alipay payments.
