What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM card that lets you connect to mobile networks without using a physical SIM. You can activate it by scanning a QR code online and start using mobile data in different countries.

How a Shanghai eSIM Works in China?

A Shanghai eSIM works just like a normal SIM card but in digital form. You set it up by scanning a QR code from your provider, and you can use the internet and make calls easily.

Shanghai eSIMs can hold several phone numbers and connect to more than one network, which is useful for travellers who want to save money and stay connected. Most new iPhones and Android phones support eSIMs, and they can be used in all cities across China.

Airalo provides several eSIM plans for travellers in China. You can choose between 1GB for 3 days at £3.50 and 50GB for 30 days at £38.00. These plans work on China Unicom’s 4G/LTE network and are easy to activate for use in Shanghai and across China.

However, the smaller data options may not be enough for travellers who use social media or stream videos often. Plans such as 1GB for 3 days or 3GB for 7 days can run out quickly. Prices are also quite high compared with some other eSIM providers, meaning you might pay more for each gigabyte.

Airalo offers fixed plan lengths of 3, 7, 15, or 30 days, which may not suit all travellers. Those staying for shorter or unusual trip durations might find it less convenient.

Overall, Airalo eSIMs are reliable and easy to use but may not be the best choice for travellers who need larger data allowances or more flexible plan options.

SimOptions provides several data options in China, starting from 1 GB up to 50 GB. The 1 GB plan, priced at around £3.90, is one of the most popular choices.

However, some plans have longer validity periods, usually between 7 and 30 days, which may be ideal for long-term stays. Data speed may vary as SimOptions does not specify the network operator or confirm 5G support.

These eSIMs offer data-only service, so calls and SMS are not available. Despite these limits, SimOptions remains a practical choice for travellers who need quick and easy mobile internet access in China.

Nomad offers several eSIM plans for travellers in China, with data options ranging from 1GB to 50GB. These eSIMs work on the China Unicom network and are 5G ready for fast connections.

Nomad’s China eSIMs are data only and must be installed within 30 days after purchase. The plan starts once you first connect to a network in China. Calls and SMS are not supported.

Although Nomad eSIMs are cheaper than some brands like Airalo or SimOptions, they are still more expensive than Trip.com’s eSIM plans. A validity period of 7 to 90 days may suit most people, but 1GB of data for 7 days is usually not enough for most travellers. It is best to compare your data needs before buying to choose the most suitable plan.

3 Benefits of Using a China eSIM in Shanghai

1. Instant connection when you arrive in China
With an eSIM, you can connect to the internet as soon as you land at the airport. There is no need to buy a SIM card at a shop or wait for delivery. Once the eSIM is downloaded in advance, you can go online straight away to book a taxi or find your hotel easily.

2. No risk of losing or damaging a SIM card
Traditional SIM cards are tiny and easy to lose or break, especially while travelling. An eSIM is digital, so you do not need to remove or insert anything. This makes it safer and more convenient during your trip.

3. Use dual SIM for more flexibility
An eSIM lets you use two mobile networks on one phone. You can keep your local number active while using data in China. This is useful for travellers visiting several countries as it avoids the need to change SIM cards each time.

Warm welcome at reception when we checked in. The lobby was bright and welcoming. Location very convenient for both tourist spots and metro. Most of the tourist spots like the Bund and Yu Yuan are within walking distance. The rooms were very clean and amenities good. The housekeeper replaces the bottles of water everyday, which was great. My only comment is that there was no kettle to boil water for tea. Not everyone in the world drinks coffee! The bar in the lobby was a great place to relax, however the two service staff there when we went to have some drinks and snacks were rather unfriendly and looked like they didn't want to be there. There was no greeting, no initiative to offer menus for drinks and food. We had to ask for these and then were told we would be better off going to the restaurant if we wanted to eat. Despite that our stay was fabulous and we would go back there again but not to the bar.

We had such a wonderful stay! The hotel is perfectly located in the middle of the city, very close to the subway. You can easily acces every major attraction without the need to take a taxi or to switch the subway too much. Highly recommend. On top of everything we got such a nice room with an incredible view on 26th floor. We have to thank Oliver from the reception for giving us such a nice room.

The hotel itself is a historic building, with the breakfast cafe being particularly beautiful. Our room overlooked the Shanghai city skyline, offering good privacy and a nice view. The room size was a bit on the smaller side. While some facilities were slightly dated, they were very well-maintained. The bathroom had excellent water pressure, which made for a really comfortable shower. The hotel breakfast was excellent and highly recommended!

My family and I had a great stay at Conrad Shanghai. The hotel staff are very friendly and professional, with a special shout out to Rick at the receptionist. We booked two rooms, and he went out of the way to arrange for our rooms to be on the same floor. He managed our expectations by not over promising that he could make our request work. But wow, he made it work in the end. While waiting, Rick gave our kids toys to keep them occupied. One of our group Being family with young kids and the other without, Taking our needs into consideration, Rick arranged for the best available rooms for us, at the same level. Thank you, Rick! The rooms are very clean and well maintained. And hotel very conveniently located to take a nice stroll to the bund. We look forward to returning to Conrad Shanghai.

This hotel has a really interesting style which makes a nice change from all the cookie-cutter 5star chain hotels. The location is pretty amazing, next door to the Bund, metro lines 10 and 14 and Yu Garden. Our room had a great view over the river and looking towards the light show on the Pudong side. Breakfast was good. While the western breakfast was extensive perhaps the Chinese selection could have a bigger selection? We were really happy that we picked this hotel and definitely recommend it.

From the room and the furnitures, you can tell that it is an old hotel. The lobby is grand but the room is not as great in comparison. Room was not well lit when curtain is closed and all the lights are on. However, hotel is situated at an extremely great location; right outside of the hotel is Nanjing Pedestrian Street. The Bund is walking distance. Nearby the hotel has many great and famous restaurants. If you don’t mind that the room is a bit run down (but relatively clean), I think this hotel is a great place to stay.

The hotel is in a great central location, right on Nanjing Road, near East Nanjing Railway Station. Breakfast is varied, but if you stay for several days in a row, the food is the same every day. You'll get bored after eating for several days. The room amenities are too little shower gel. Overall, I still like this place. I was in Shanghai for an exhibition and booked The Kunlun Hotel through an online travel platform. Its location is fantastic, super close to the subway; just 100 meters from Exit 12 of Jing'an Temple Station! Stepping inside, I was immediately impressed by the sheer space and grandeur. The lobby is expansive, with high ceilings, and feels incredibly opulent. I stayed on a high floor. My initial room was on the 23rd floor, offering a view of Jing'an Temple. Unfortunately, there was a minor issue: the air conditioner started leaking, so I had to switch rooms. My second room, on the 28th floor, then had a splendid view of the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. From both high vantage points, Shanghai's bustling traffic looked incredibly dense and vibrant. As someone who can feel overwhelmed by crowded patterns, it was quite a sight! The hotel also generously invited me to a buffet meal at their 38th-floor restaurant. There was a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, though I regret forgetting to take photos. The Japanese ramen was decent, and overall, it was a simple yet satisfying meal. However, I must say, sitting by the window and looking down offered a truly commanding perspective, allowing me to once again soak in Shanghai's dynamic energy. It was a wonderful experience! As for the room itself, it was perfectly equipped with everything one could need and was genuinely comfortable and well-appointed! A quick tip for fellow travelers: toothbrushes are not provided in the room, so if you forget yours, remember to ask for one at the front desk. I was a bit rushed during check-out, so I didn't get a chance to photograph the breakfast buffet area. However, the breakfast buffet actually offered a great ambiance and a wide variety of choices – it was quite good! Should I visit Shanghai again, I would definitely choose this hotel.

The Staff Are absolutely fabulous - I don’t speak any Chinese but everyone I spoke to had translation apps and were more than willing to help out. I was able to check in early and check out late at no charge and the 8th floor is a large comfortable lounge space where I was able to wait before my check in time as I had an early flight in and I am currently there again waiting for my flight out. The location is ideal being a 10 minute walk from Qufu station on line 8 and a 10 minute walk from another station on line 1. The room was excellent I had plenty of space, one of the largest beds I’ve ever had and an absolutely stunning view from the window. Everywhere was clean and tidy and I was provided with water everyday as well as someone to clean the room. The air conditioner works great which was needed as it’s been a consistent 35° throughout my trip. I’ve loved Shanghai and having somewhere safe and well connected has definitely played a part in it - I will 100% be staying here again when I visit Shanghai again in the future. This hotel was exceptional. Firstly the lady at check in desk Yulia was very friendly and Jack was very welcoming. The hotel has a very nice lobby with a Lavazza there so convenient to grab a coffee. The room was very spacious and there was a small cake for my wife's birthday by chef. The beds were comfortable and very big which was nice. The location is absolutely outstanding the best thing is the subway station which is literally 5 minute or less walk. Xintiandi is very close by taxi and all other prime locations. I did like a late night delivery of food and the robot bought it to the room which was great to see. The Bund Area Shanghai|1.27km from city centre
Today is my last day at The Westin Bund Center Shanghai. At first, I loved the hotel, but unfortunately, the experience has slowly deteriorated. Before arrival, I had tried emailing ************************* to make a small request to celebrate an anniversary, but the email failed to deliver with an error saying the recipient’s server didn’t recognize certain characters. I’m not sure why, as the email was in English and sent from my phone. At check-in, I mentioned this to the receptionist (his name started with “C”), who was very polite and spoke to the lady behind him, asking her to reach out to Angela to assist. He then told me to head to my room and assured me I would be contacted. I waited for an hour in the room with no update, so I went out hoping to find a message upon my return, but sadly, there was still nothing. The email issue could have been my fault, and that is fine. But what is unacceptable is being promised a follow-up for such a special occasion and then never receiving it. For a hotel of this standard, I expected better communication and service consistency. Later, my son lost part of his toy, which led me to start searching around the room. While doing so, I discovered dust under every cabinet. Worse, I found what looked like someone else’s cream bottle stuck between the bed and the dresser. This makes me believe that the bottom part of the bed sheet was not changed, as housekeeping would almost certainly have noticed such an item if the bed had been properly stripped and remade. I have stayed in many Marriott properties, and this is the first time I would give only 2–3 stars. :(

This is about my stay at a national heritage hotel in Shanghai. I came to dine at Ling Long and decided to stay here. It is a 4th batch National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit. The former Cathay Hotel occupied its 4th floor and above. Interestingly, the 15-meter-high ground floor facing the street was not originally part of the Cathay Hotel. (Across the street was the former Palace Hotel, where Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling held their engagement banquet. In 1956, it merged with the Cathay Hotel to form the Peace Hotel. This building is now leased by Swatch, with the lease until 2037.) The Peace Hotel North Building is now only accessible to staying and dining guests, which significantly improves the experience. I could occasionally capture photos of the lobby completely empty. The Deluxe City View Room was overall just okay. The highlights were definitely the bed and the welcome fruit. The complimentary bottled water was also a nice touch. The shampoo and shower gel were of average quality, but the Le Labo soap was excellent. Soundproofing was poor. I could hear children yelling next door and girls laughing. In the bathroom, the gushing sound of water from the floor above was audible. The air conditioning also had a loud airflow. I'd advise insomniacs to bring noise-canceling headphones. Surprisingly, the TV was hidden in a cabinet, making you crane your neck to watch it. During turndown service, the attendant actually had to open the cabinet door and angle the TV towards the bed. I was quite taken aback by this. Turndown service was also nothing special. There was a hair left in the bathtub drain. I explored the hotel a bit. My favorite parts were the green-tiled staircase and the gym. The gym was very well-equipped, featuring a yoga room and a swimming pool. Sweat towels were conveniently placed by the treadmills, and lemon water and fruit were readily available. You could even borrow Bluetooth headphones. I was very satisfied with this aspect. I spent half an hour stretching with 4-pound dumbbells, and I had the entire gym to myself – pure bliss! The Jazz Bar was quite small. The museum was also small and lacked significant exhibits. During the guided tour, there was an enthusiastic hard sell for various items: first mooncakes, then paid tours, followed by wedding venues, and finally hotel souvenirs. It was the first time I'd seen such aggressive selling during a hotel tour; it was ridiculous. The 'Nine Nations Suites' were heavily promoted everywhere. Our room even had brochures detailing which celebrities and 'traffic stars' (influencers) had stayed in each suite. I found this a bit undignified. In the lobby, there was a purple crystal peace dove. Upon closer inspection, it was quite an eyesore. (If you think my taste is questionable, then you're probably right.) My overall impression after staying here is that the hotel, resting on its immense reputation, lacks the motivation to improve. Once it meets the average standard for its category, it stops striving to provide better service. It doesn't even seem concerned with how to better leverage its rich historical and cultural heritage. Its limited physical space is an objective constraint, but its complacent attitude is the subjective issue. It's genuinely disappointing. Overall 4 stars. The gym adds an extra 0.5 stars.

Comparing it to the other Marriott hotels I've stayed at in Shanghai/China, it wasn't that good, but definitely not bad at all. However, pay 200-300RMB more and stay at JW Marriott, which is like a couple of KMs away from this hotel. JW Marriot is on a whole new level!

Built into a natural quarry, the hotel boasts a truly unique design, and the night views are absolutely breathtaking. Our room balcony offered direct views of the waterfall and lake, with evenings featuring a captivating water screen light show. It truly felt like stepping into a sci-fi movie! As a frequent guest, I can attest that the high-tech room experience is truly superb; everything can be conveniently controlled via the AI assistant, XiaoDu! Moreover, the service from our butler, Alice, was incredibly attentive and thorough. She proactively followed up and assisted with any issues we had, and even anticipated our needs by communicating with us beforehand, truly epitomizing 'proactive service and swift response,' which elevated our entire travel experience. I highly recommend asking Alice to help plan your experience; for those who appreciate attention to detail, you won't be disappointed!

The hotel is very close to the subway station, with plenty of convenient dining options nearby. It's also great for families traveling with children. Suggestions: Two pillows for a double bed felt a bit sparse; four would be much more comfortable. Also, adding a clothesline would be a great convenience, especially for hanging personal towels and other small items.

The hotel has a charming, secluded feel, located near the Zǐténg Road Metro (Mixc City) exit. Follow the hotel's signs once, and you'll easily find your way. The overall design boasts a distinct Hong Kong flair, blending trendy aesthetics with traditional Chinese elements. The staff were all incredibly professional and friendly, and the hotel offers excellent value for money. Highly recommended – I'll definitely be back next time! 👌

Perfect location. It's kn a bit shady street but once you leave the hotel and walk 2 minutes you are in the main street. The receptionists were very nice and helpful even though they didn't speak English but it was quickly solved by translator. Overall very nice stay and very clean.

During the off-peak May Day holiday, the first choice for an outing to Sheshan is Kaiyuan Mingting! The hotel lobby is spacious and bright, the front desk Xiaoqian is warm and thoughtful, the check-in procedure is efficient and convenient, and the business king room with a large terrace is upgraded for free. The room is clean and comfortable. When I saw the children, I took the initiative to provide children's supplies. There are many plugs in the room, which is very convenient. The network speed is also very fast. It is suitable for business and parents. The hotel is next to Qingpu Sam's Club, which is very convenient for shopping. It takes 20 minutes to drive to Sheshan Forest Park. Overall, the overall experience exceeded expectations, and I will choose here next time!

Is the third time that we stay at this hotel an it never disappoints. Is the perfect hotel if you want to stay near Hongqiao station or the airport and it has plenty of dining options around and things to do. The line 2 takes you straight away to the city center and to PVG airport if needed, but bear in mind that PVG airport is very far from here. The hotel breakfast is well balanced with many options, both local and western. The service, gym, pool and amenities are on point. Spacious rooms, nicely cleaned and comfortable. Definitely will come back next time I stop in SH again.

Is the Ritz-Carlton trying to position itself alongside hotels like Hilton and Pullman now? Seriously, the hygiene, facilities, and service were truly subpar across the board. On the first night, the room we were assigned had a terrible stench, exactly like a dirty public restroom. We waited for over half an hour to switch rooms, only to be given another room that reeked of mildew. The bed was noticeably damp, and it was clear the linens hadn't been changed. What's more, the complimentary bottled water had already been opened! But it was too late and we were too exhausted to request another change. So, I called the front desk and informed them that I would need a different room the next day—one without any odd smells and with a dry, clean bed. The next day, after returning from lunch, we were told our new room still wasn't ready. Around 2 or 3 PM, when we were about to leave, I called the front desk again. They said the room was ready and they'd send someone with the key card (it sounded like I was talking to the operator, not the front desk directly). We then waited for 40-50 minutes, but no key card arrived. I called again, and the operator seemed surprised, asking, 'It hasn't been sent yet?' She said she'd follow up. Another twenty minutes passed, and still nothing. I called *again*, emphasizing that we were in a rush to leave and asked them to transfer our luggage for us. The operator asked us to please wait a little longer in the room, assuring us someone would be right over. After *another* considerable wait, the front desk called and said, 'Actually, your new room isn't ready yet.' Are you playing games with me?! Honestly, staying here was beyond frustrating! The pervasive mildew smell was truly nauseating.

I enjoyed my stay at the Grand Hyatt. The room was incredible. When I check in they wanted me to upgrade my room for a fee (about $45 US) but I figured, all the room have great views. I doesn’t matter if I had a city view. It was still incredible. The pool, spa, steam room and sauna were clean enough. Around the steam room there was a permanent pee odor in one of the showers. That should be improved. The breakfast buffet had a large variety of options. The hotel is big and the restaurant seems inadequate to handle this much people at a times. Maybe they could open another restaurant to handle peak hours. The room was clean and had a large number of amenities. The TV set is a bit too small for the room. This was a great stay. The Grand Hyatt is a good option is you want to stay near the bund.

We recently stayed at The Ritz-Carlton in Shanghai, and it was truly a memorable experience. The hotel exudes a sense of tradition and timeless elegance, and the view from our room was absolutely breathtaking — beyond words, really. I can confidently say it was the best view we've seen among all the hotels in Shanghai. From the moment we arrived, the staff welcomed us with genuine smiles and warm hospitality. The level of service throughout our stay was truly outstanding. Check-in and check-out were both quick and seamless, which we greatly appreciated after a long journey. Although the building itself shows a bit of age, everything else more than made up for it. The room was immaculately clean, with the furniture and flooring well maintained and neatly arranged. We also appreciated the thoughtful welcome letter and fresh fruit, which added a personal touch and made us feel truly valued as guests. The breakfast venue offered not only excellent food but also a stunning view, making every morning feel special. The service at breakfast was also consistently attentive and professional. While the swimming pool was a bit on the smaller side, my husband still enjoyed it during the short time he was able to use it. Once again, the staff there were helpful and courteous, ensuring a pleasant experience. If I had to mention one minor downside, it would be the slightly dated feel of the building itself. However, the incredible view, exceptional service, and overall atmosphere far outweighed that detail. Overall, I would confidently rate our stay as 9 out of 10. I would absolutely love to return on our next trip to Shanghai. Thank you to the entire team at The Ritz-Carlton for a truly wonderful stay, thanks ❤️

Waldorf Astoria has always held a special place in my heart as one of my favorite luxury hotels. My admiration for it began during my first visit to the Grand Brasserie for Sunday Brunch. The moment I stepped into the hotel, I was utterly captivated and amazed by its unparalleled grandeur, opulent design, and magnificent decor and furnishings. Even as a Shanghainese local, I can't resist a weekend stay here. I always opt for a full river-view room. In the morning, as the curtains gently open, with nothing to obstruct the view, I look down through the floor-to-ceiling windows to see the most vibrant S-bend of the Huangpu River extending into the distance. Looking up, the majestic cluster of skyscrapers in Pudong, including the iconic ”Four-Piece Set” (Lujiazui skyline), proudly stand tall. The landmark buildings of the Bund and prime river views are all laid out before you. At night, colorful sightseeing boats crisscross the river, and the buildings shimmer with vibrant, beautiful neon lights, creating a truly magnificent spectacle. The hotel's service is also exceptional. Coco, Eva, and Katrina, the wonderful staff from the exclusive concierge team, are incredibly warm and attentive. They proactively helped me with my luggage, personally escorted me to my room, and showed genuine care and concern. At the front desk, during check-in and check-out, even when busy with other guests, they would proactively engage with me, help me review my bill first, and minimize my waiting time. They truly go above and beyond to make guests feel completely at home, providing a wonderful and seamless experience.

No words can truly explain the level of service this hotel has provided. All the attendants at the reception had warmly welcomed us and provided a top notch service that is unparallel or any other hotel in Shanghai. If you are uncertain, this hotel truly is a must stay hotel in Shanghai. The rooms are big and staff are welcoming. I ordered pizza for room service, but I bet you it was the best microwave pizza I ever had. Lastly the lounge or the bar next to the reception was splendid, that have different kinds of Qingdao beer on the tap for you to have a deeper taste of what China has to offer you.

I've lost count of how many times I've stayed here, and it's always exceptional. I genuinely don't want to stay at any other hotel in Shanghai now! 😂 All the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, especially the lady who assisted me with my check-out at 7 AM on August 22nd. ❤️ The lobby bar offers great drinks, and their seasonal menu is a delightful touch! The only 'downside' is that the beds are *so* incredibly comfortable that after all these stays, I still haven't managed to get myself to the gym in the mornings! 🤣 I also just discovered that Metro Line 7 goes directly to Longyang Road, and Exit 9 is right outside the hotel! This is absolutely perfect for someone like me who gets carsick and prefers taking the subway for airport transfers. 🥰 (And a bonus tip: even if you accidentally take the wrong line, you can exit from Line 2 at Reel Department Store, head to B1, and easily transfer to the Line 7 exit. Super convenient!)

3 Disadvantages of Shanghai, China eSIM

1. Limited device support
To use an eSIM, your phone or tablet must support it. Many new models do, but older or budget devices may not. You will need to check if your device works with eSIM, which can be a bit of trouble. If you need to buy a new device, that adds extra cost.

2. Not usable on multiple devices
A normal SIM card can be moved easily between phones, but eSIMs are built into one device. This means you cannot quickly switch it to another phone or tablet. For people using more than one device while travelling in China, this can be inconvenient.

3. No local phone number
Most eSIM data plans do not include a phone number, or you may have to pay extra for one. This can be a problem when making local calls, such as booking a restaurant or contacting your hotel. Regular SIM cards usually include both data and a phone number, which is more practical for some travellers.
