What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM card that lets you connect to mobile networks without using a physical SIM. You can activate it by scanning a QR code online and start using mobile data in different countries.

How a Shanghai eSIM Works in China?

A Shanghai eSIM works just like a normal SIM card but in digital form. You set it up by scanning a QR code from your provider, and you can use the internet and make calls easily.

Shanghai eSIMs can hold several phone numbers and connect to more than one network, which is useful for travellers who want to save money and stay connected. Most new iPhones and Android phones support eSIMs, and they can be used in all cities across China.

Airalo provides several eSIM plans for travellers in China. You can choose between 1GB for 3 days at £3.50 and 50GB for 30 days at £38.00. These plans work on China Unicom’s 4G/LTE network and are easy to activate for use in Shanghai and across China.

However, the smaller data options may not be enough for travellers who use social media or stream videos often. Plans such as 1GB for 3 days or 3GB for 7 days can run out quickly. Prices are also quite high compared with some other eSIM providers, meaning you might pay more for each gigabyte.

Airalo offers fixed plan lengths of 3, 7, 15, or 30 days, which may not suit all travellers. Those staying for shorter or unusual trip durations might find it less convenient.

Overall, Airalo eSIMs are reliable and easy to use but may not be the best choice for travellers who need larger data allowances or more flexible plan options.

SimOptions provides several data options in China, starting from 1 GB up to 50 GB. The 1 GB plan, priced at around £3.90, is one of the most popular choices.

However, some plans have longer validity periods, usually between 7 and 30 days, which may be ideal for long-term stays. Data speed may vary as SimOptions does not specify the network operator or confirm 5G support.

These eSIMs offer data-only service, so calls and SMS are not available. Despite these limits, SimOptions remains a practical choice for travellers who need quick and easy mobile internet access in China.

Nomad offers several eSIM plans for travellers in China, with data options ranging from 1GB to 50GB. These eSIMs work on the China Unicom network and are 5G ready for fast connections.

Nomad’s China eSIMs are data only and must be installed within 30 days after purchase. The plan starts once you first connect to a network in China. Calls and SMS are not supported.

Although Nomad eSIMs are cheaper than some brands like Airalo or SimOptions, they are still more expensive than Trip.com’s eSIM plans. A validity period of 7 to 90 days may suit most people, but 1GB of data for 7 days is usually not enough for most travellers. It is best to compare your data needs before buying to choose the most suitable plan.

3 Benefits of Using a China eSIM in Shanghai

1. Instant connection when you arrive in China
With an eSIM, you can connect to the internet as soon as you land at the airport. There is no need to buy a SIM card at a shop or wait for delivery. Once the eSIM is downloaded in advance, you can go online straight away to book a taxi or find your hotel easily.

2. No risk of losing or damaging a SIM card
Traditional SIM cards are tiny and easy to lose or break, especially while travelling. An eSIM is digital, so you do not need to remove or insert anything. This makes it safer and more convenient during your trip.

3. Use dual SIM for more flexibility
An eSIM lets you use two mobile networks on one phone. You can keep your local number active while using data in China. This is useful for travellers visiting several countries as it avoids the need to change SIM cards each time.

I chose this Pullman for my business trip to Shanghai for a conference. The location was very convenient, making my commute to and from the venue smooth. The room was meticulously cleaned; there was no dust in the bathroom or in the corners around the bed. The mattress was just right, neither too soft nor too firm. The desk in the room had enough space, perfect for organizing my conference materials after meetings. The front desk staff handled check-in efficiently and thoughtfully. The hotel itself was quiet, and the soundproofing was excellent, allowing me to get a peaceful night's rest after a busy day. Overall, the experience exceeded my expectations, and I'll definitely consider staying here again for future conferences.

Belonging to the Okura Hotels group, the cleanliness is top-notch by domestic standards. The location is excellent – it's quietly situated yet right next to a subway station where three lines converge. As for service, the parking attendant was quite impatient. When I asked how to reserve a PMO parking spot, he dismissively said it wasn't his concern, which was a bit much. There's definitely a gap compared to Okura hotels in Japan in this regard. Although the facilities are 36 years old, they are well-maintained, but the signs of age are inevitably present.

Huatian Hotel & Resort Bund Yu Garden is an elegant sanctuary hidden in the bustling city. The overall decor is exquisitely refined, with a strong New Chinese aesthetic that creates a gentle and romantic atmosphere. It offers a tranquil escape amidst the urban buzz, making a stay here feel like stepping into a healing paradise. Both the ambiance and style are top-notch. The check-in experience far exceeded my expectations. The front desk kindly offered a complimentary room upgrade to one with a 270° panoramic view. Opening the window reveals breathtaking views of the Bund and its surroundings, equally stunning by day and night. The unobstructed vistas are perfect for photos, making every shot picture-perfect. The scenic experience is truly flawless. The hotel service is incredibly thoughtful and attentive. The staff were gentle and meticulous throughout my stay, making me feel right at home. Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised with fresh fruit and champagne, showcasing their attention to detail and creating a warm and delightful experience. The service quality is impeccable. The breakfast was also outstanding, with a rich and varied selection of both Chinese and Western dishes. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were spot on—refined and delicious, setting a great tone for the day. My entire stay was flawless, elegant, romantic, and comfortable. This is a highly recommended hotel for anyone staying near the Bund!

I’m so glad I chose the Mehood Elegant Hotel. It was the perfect location — close to everything, not too crowded, yet not too remote either. I traveled solo with my 14-month-old toddler, and he was absolutely spoiled by all the hotel staff. Everyone treated us with so much kindness and care. Jerry checked us in and out and even gave me a cute fridge magnet. The breakfast was delicious with so many options to choose from, the rooms were cleaned daily, and bottled water was always replenished. Xiao Jun also took great care of us, and Yinhe Juan felt like an auntie to us. We looked forward to seeing them every morning at breakfast. They all made my stay feel so warm and welcoming — truly like a home away from home. I’m incredibly grateful for their hospitality, and if I ever find myself back in Shanghai again, I’ll definitely be booking Mehood. PS: the view from my room was incredible!

Excellent hotel! Many people say it's not worth staying in the city center because it's supposedly noisy, but we didn't experience any discomfort at all. The breakfasts are fantastic, offering Chinese dishes, a great selection of fruits, and pastries. On Fridays and Saturdays, champagne was available at breakfast. You can always get unlimited bottled water at the front desk, which was a lifesaver for us in the heat. Our room was clean, and the mattresses and pillows were comfortable. We had a room on the 10th floor with a view of Nanjing Road, which was beautiful in the evening. The metro is also very close by. We will definitely choose this hotel again for our next trip. A deposit of 1000 yuan is required upon check-in. I offered to leave $100 instead, and they said it was fine :)

The hotel location is great - just walk a few meters and you will reach the main Nanjing pedestrian road. Turning left and walking few more meters, you will reach the metro for Line 2 and 10. And walking about 10mins further, you will reach The Bund. Super convenient. Room was very clean, spacious and comfy. Showers were great with good hot water supply and complete amenities. The only down side is the walls are quite thin. Can hear people coming out of their rooms or walking pass (if they are loud). Also, since it's a bit near to the pedestrian road, some of the e-hailing cars did not dare drive in to the hotel entrance. However, if you tell them it's okay to drive in, they will. Overall, I will consider to stay at this hotel again if I ever go back to Shanghai.

The Bund Area Shanghai|1.65km from city centre
Stayed at the Metropolo Shanghai Nanjing Road East Hotel right in the heart of old Shanghai and it was an excellent base for the trip. The hotel sits just off , only a short walk from and right beside the legendary Peace Hotel. You get the atmosphere and location of the Bund area without paying the full luxury premium of the more famous neighbours. The biggest surprise was the room renovation quality. The rooms felt exceptionally well updated — modern bathroom, comfortable bedding, good lighting and strong air conditioning, while still keeping some of the historic Shanghai character. Much better than many older hotels in this district that can feel tired. At night, Nanjing Lu was absolutely throbbing with people. The pedestrian walking street was alive with tourists, shoppers, street performers and neon lights everywhere. If you want to feel the energy of Shanghai, this is exactly where you stay. Step outside the hotel and you are immediately in the middle of it all. Very convenient for food, shopping, the metro and evening walks along the Bund. Great option for travellers who want location, atmosphere and renovated rooms without going ultra-luxury.

As a five-star hotel, both the service and facilities are quite good. I've always heard that Westin's family rooms are great, and I got to experience one on this trip to Shanghai. I won't go into detail about the good aspects, but I do have a few suggestions: 1. For a family room, there actually aren't many kids' amenities, just a few stuffed animals. For example, a step stool could be provided in the bathroom for children. 2. The sink in the bathroom constantly accumulates water on the inner side. I'm not sure if it's due to the countertop's angle or something else, but I hope it can be adjusted. 3. The toilet paper holder in the WC is too far inward, making it inconvenient to grab paper. If you pull hard, the roll might fall off. Moving the holder forward, reversing its direction, or moving it to the right side would all be good solutions. Overall, I hope Westin continues to improve as a high-end hotel. I look forward to experiencing it again next time!

Lujiazui Area Shanghai|2.51km from city centre
The location is fantastic, just a short walk to Lujiazui Binjiang, offering splendid views of the sunset and the Bund. The Pujiang Building was built in 1998, and the Zijin Building in 2005. I stayed in the Zijin Building this time, but it felt very old-fashioned. There's no sound system, no smart toilet, and although there are many movies on TV, the color and picture quality are quite poor. The hairdryer is also very old and slow. I specifically checked out the gyms in both the Pujiang and Zijin buildings. They're similar in size, with very vintage equipment, though there are minor differences. The equipment is packed in tightly, but you can still get a good workout. Some machines, however, have exposed wires. Breakfast runs from 6 AM to 10:30 AM (till 11 AM on weekends). There are a lot of foreigners, and while the variety is extensive, it wasn't quite to my taste. Replenishing dishes was a bit slow at times. I feel the price doesn't match the outdated facilities, but the location truly makes up for it. I hope they renovate soon, especially the bedside outlets, hairdryer, and bathroom.

This is our second time choosing this hotel. We met Trista, who was so sweet! She helped upgrade my child's breakfast and even prepared cookies for them when we checked in. The service here truly makes you feel at home. I love this place, mainly because it's incredibly convenient. This time, I chose a stay that included breakfast, and I don't regret it at all. There were so many options, and everything was delicious. Right next to the hotel lobby, there's a plaza with a supermarket, McDonald's, and Luckin Coffee. Cross the street, and you'll find tons of great food. Turn another corner, and you're on Nanjing Road, Shanghai's most walkable pedestrian street, with the biggest Pop Mart, Lego store, and M&M's chocolate store. It's so convenient! If you get tired, you can always go back to the hotel to rest before heading out to explore more.

I want to start my review from a positive things: 1. beautiful view 2. the best laser-show i’ve ever seen. 3. The room is good, well- equipped, clean and looks great! 4. Staff is friendly and ready to help in a short time. Areas for improvement: 1. Pool. You should stop operating it asap: There’re absolutely unsanitary conditions, the locker room reeks of urine, some kinds of unknown hairs is everywhere around the locker room, even in walls and doors, mold, rust, and broken furniture - that all you can meet in the pool. The pool is small, old, and only 1.2m deep. The pool is not met even minimal expectations from an InterContinental hotel. 2. Breakfast: generally - ok, for a 4 stars hotel. 3. Dirty windows in elevators spoil the beautiful view, I think you could clean in outside using a cleaner robots.

This was honestly one of the most memorable hotel stays we have ever experienced. We stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong to celebrate my girlfriend’s 23rd birthday during our first trip to Shanghai together, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations from beginning to end. Before arrival, Assistant Guest Recognition Manager Yana Ivleva kindly communicated with us by email and thoughtfully helped arrange everything for the celebration. Her warmth, professionalism, and genuine care made us feel welcomed even before we arrived at the hotel. The room decoration, birthday cake, handwritten card, flowers, and beautiful Bund view created such a special atmosphere for us. Every detail felt thoughtful and heartfelt rather than simply formal hotel service. The hotel itself was also outstanding — the room condition, cleanliness, facilities, swimming pool, and especially the incredible night view of Shanghai were all amazing. Flair Rooftop Bar was also a wonderful experience for enjoying the skyline and atmosphere. What impressed us the most, however, was the hospitality. Yana and the staff truly made this stay unforgettable for us, and thanks to them, our first trip to Shanghai became a memory we will cherish for a very long time. We are sincerely grateful to The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong and will absolutely look forward to returning again in the future.

Wujiaochang Commercial Area Shanghai|9.08km from city centre
Coming to Shanghai, I specifically chose the Pagoda Hotel (Fudan University, Shanghai Branch) that I've been eyeing for a while. I booked the Deluxe Family Twin Room for four people, and the experience truly exceeded my expectations! First of all, the hotel's location is fantastic! It's right in the Wujiaochang business district and KIC (Knowledge Innovation Community), next to University Road, which has a ton of trendy restaurants and cafes. In the evening, we went to a folk bar nearby, and it was a wonderful experience. It's also super close to Fudan University; we even took a walk on campus in the morning, which was lovely. Back in the room, it was incredibly spacious, absolutely not cramped for a family of four. There were two large beds, plus a tatami mat that could be used for sitting or lying down. We had tea and snacks on it during the day, and there was plenty of space to move around. The smart room control system was so convenient; a simple voice command could open or close the curtains and turn the lights on or off. Through the panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows, we had an unobstructed view of Wujiaochang's city skyline, which was truly expansive. The hotel's service was also excellent. The front desk staff were very welcoming, and the butler even asked about our accommodation preferences in advance. There's also a free self-service late-night snack bar after 9 PM, which was a pleasant surprise! The mini-bar was complimentary, and all the in-room amenities were well-stocked. Plus, food deliveries were brought up by a robot, which was both convenient and private. The hotel also has a gym and a laundry room, which is incredibly thoughtful for families with children, allowing us to wash and dry clothes anytime. Finally, a quick reminder: hotels in Shanghai typically don't proactively provide disposable toothbrushes, but you can always ask the front desk if you need one. However, this is a minor detail, and overall, this Pagoda is definitely worth recommending, especially for family trips – you can't go wrong with it!

The room is more suited for young people, and the cleanliness is pretty good. The communal area downstairs at night is excellent for working. The front desk staff was also nice, promptly getting me a bottle of water when I was thirsty. When checking out, I needed to go to the North Bund for business and didn't want to come back for my luggage. Unfortunately, when I asked the front desk if they offered a luggage delivery service, they weren't clear and said no. For a major city like Shanghai, there really should be more diverse services to make travel easier for us.

Guests: 2 adults, 1 child (6 years old) Room type: King Bed (Double Bed) --- ⭐ Location: Absolutely Perfect The hotel is right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. M&M's, LEGO, and the Bund are just a short walk away. It's incredibly convenient for dining, shopping, and taking the subway. The area downstairs is lively, but we didn't find it noisy. However, if you're sensitive to noise, I recommend asking the hotel for a higher floor room in advance (their highest is the 6th floor). ⭐ Room: Small, but Clean The room isn't very large. After placing two suitcases and a stroller, it was pretty difficult to move around. One unique feature: the sink isn't inside the bathroom; it's right by the entrance on the right. If this bothers you, you might want to reconsider. We specifically asked the hotel staff, and if you want a larger room, they suggest the family room. The main differences are the location within the hotel and the size of the desk. If you're traveling with kids, I honestly recommend booking a family room directly. As for cleanliness, it was impeccable: · Towels were replaced daily, and they were the individually packaged, disposable kind. · A cleaner came to tidy up every day. · Water bottles were replenished daily. The hot water and air conditioning worked perfectly, no issues at all. ⭐ Service: Truly Worth Mentioning This was the most surprising aspect of our entire stay. We don't have Chinese phone numbers, and initially, we were worried about ordering food delivery or making purchases. However, the hotel staff were incredibly proactive in helping us. Not only was their attitude excellent, but they genuinely solved our problems: · Helped with food delivery: They used their own phones to order meals for us directly. · Helped buy a suitcase: On one occasion, we needed to buy a suitcase, and a supervisor named Ruan (阮) even used his personal account to order it for us. This level of service goes beyond ”basic courtesy”; they were truly dedicated to helping guests. We arrived at the hotel past 1 AM, and the front desk quickly processed our check-in without any issues, even though we were using passports. Luggage storage was also smooth: On the day we went to Wuzhen, we left our large suitcases in the lobby. They tagged them, and we simply picked them up upon our return. There are many surveillance cameras throughout the hotel, making it feel quite secure. ⭐ Value for Money: No Breakfast, No Restaurant, but Location and Service Made Up for It This hotel doesn't offer breakfast or have a restaurant. While there are many dining options downstairs, the hotel itself doesn't provide breakfast. Considering the price, the location, and this level of service, it was very reasonable, even exceeding our expectations. --- ✅ In Summary If you want to stay near Nanjing Road and can accept a slightly smaller room, this hotel is definitely worth considering. Especially if you're traveling with children and don't have a Chinese phone number, their service will give you great peace of mind. However, for family trips, I recommend booking a family room directly.

The overall environment is really good, with an exercise park right behind, offering natural oxygen and a close-to-nature feel. The only downside is that on Saturdays, if older folks want to exercise in the park early in the morning, the noise can be quite loud, making it impossible to sleep in.

I stayed at the Hyatt House Shanghai Hongqiao CBD and found it to be a very solid choice, especially for business travel. The location is excellent, situated directly opposite the railway station and the airport, which makes onward travel extremely convenient. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable, providing everything needed for a short business stay. The staff are friendly, helpful, and efficient, which adds to the overall positive experience. Breakfast is perfectly adequate and does the job well. For business trips in particular, or if you need to continue your journey by train the next day as I did, this hotel is a very convenient and comfortable option. Overall, I had a good stay and can definitely recommend it.

The room was fantastic! Spacious and clean, and the duvet and pillows were super comfortable. After staying one night at a Disney hotel and spending the day there, we switched to this hotel, and wow, the value for money was incredible! The breakfast was also excellent. My six-year-old daughter even said it was her number one choice... I wish I had known, I wouldn't have spent all that extra money on the Disney hotel! We stayed for two nights and only on the day we checked out did we discover how wonderfully peaceful and beautiful the hotel's back garden was! There were even several stray cats. All in all, I loved it!

Jing'an District Shanghai|2.12km from city centre
The location is great, near Jing'an Temple. I've been to Shanghai many times but never visited Jing'an Temple before. This Ritz-Carlton is the first one in China, and although it's older, the facilities are very well-maintained. The room size is smaller than other Ritz-Carltons, but 38 square meters is still perfectly adequate. Personally, I feel the overall style is different from other Ritz-Carltons, more like the Four Seasons in Sydney. The hotel's Western restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine, but the grilled sea bream was covered in chili powder, almost like something a chef from Northeast China would prepare. Honestly, with an apartment complex full of expats right next door, it's hard to believe the restaurant's chef would have such an odd cooking style. It would be too bizarre if it were a troll following me everywhere. During this trip, I ate at the hotel restaurant twice, and both à la carte dishes had chili. After that, I avoided eating at the hotel during my stay, except for the buffet.

The Bund Area Shanghai|1.78km from city centre
The historic Fairmont Peace Hotel, built in 1929 by the British-Jewish businessman Victor Sassoon, holds a special place in history. It's where Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling got engaged, and where Lu Xun hosted Charlie Chaplin. Countless celebrities have graced its rooms. Previously, the Peace Hotel comprised both North and South buildings and was once known as the 'First Building in the Far East,' an iconic landmark on the Bund. I was incredibly fortunate to stay here this time, a truly immersive and delightful experience. Step out, and you're greeted by the architectural wonders of the Bund and the observation deck offering stunning views of Pudong. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is right at the doorstep. The location is absolutely superb. The hotel also houses a small museum, which feels more like an exhibition hall, with regular guided tours. A magnificent glass peace dove with outstretched wings dominates the center of the lobby. Despite its century-old history, the hotel boasts comprehensive and modern facilities. Every corner of the hotel is picturesque, perfect for photos. All the staff were warm and polite, providing very thoughtful service. However, there was a minor lapse when the concierge staff placed my checked luggage on the floor. The hotel's ambiance is fantastic. I requested a high-floor room overlooking Nanjing Road during check-in and was assigned a room on the 7th floor, also facing Nanjing Road, which offered excellent views. Lying in bed at night, I could admire the Nanjing Road nightscape. Perfect! The package also included drinks and snacks at the Cathay Room on the top floor. After discussing with the hotel, we opted to exchange it for a performance at the Jazz Bar. An 80+-year-old jazz band performs there nightly, accompanied by a resident singer. We were given two complimentary drinks – one cocktail and one juice – along with chicken wings and peanuts. Listening to jazz, enjoying a drink, and munching on snacks was pure bliss. The room perfectly blends classic and modern styles, with comprehensive amenities. The bathroom was huge, and there was a walk-in closet and a very large bathtub. The bed was super-sized, with soft and comfortable bedding. The room was spotlessly clean, and the toiletries were all high-quality. Before we returned to the room in the evening, the staff had already prepared it for bedtime. Welcome fruits and exquisite chocolates were also thoughtfully provided in the room. They were so beautiful, I almost didn't want to eat them! The in-room coffee bar offers complimentary coffee, while the mini-bar items are chargeable. After enjoying the jazz, returning to the room for a relaxing shower and a good night's sleep was simply wonderful. So happy! Breakfast was served at the Jasmine Restaurant on the first floor. The East-meets-West buffet offered an incredibly rich selection, with what felt like nearly a hundred different dishes. There was so much food, I almost couldn't try everything. Upon being seated, the server brought a cup of coffee and a pot of tea. In the end, I piled my table high with food and savored each bite. I ate so much I could barely walk out – utterly satisfying! Leaving the hotel, I felt quite reluctant to go.

Traveling with a lot of large luggage this trip, I was initially worried about the inconvenience of carrying and storing it. However, the hotel's concierge staff proactively assisted throughout the entire process, smoothly delivering my bags to the room and even thoughtfully arranging them in the custom storage area. I didn't have to lift a finger myself. Temporarily storing luggage when going out was also incredibly convenient; the check-in process was simple and efficient, and upon retrieval, my items were neatly arranged. This meticulous luggage service truly eased the hassle of long-distance travel, showcasing the professional caliber and attention to detail of a high-end hotel.

Staying at the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund again, I was immediately touched by the thoughtful welcome gift upon entering the room. Aaron and Coco put a lot of effort into curating the gift box and snacks, and even the accompanying card was handwritten, showing genuine care rather than a perfunctory gesture. Their demeanor during check-in was gentle and their observations meticulous, noticing even subtle needs. This sincerity, evident in the gift, truly enhanced the warmth of this century-old hotel. My entire stay was comfortable and I felt a strong sense of belonging.

This hotel offers excellent value for money. While the facilities aren't the newest, the service is a major highlight, and the rooms are clean. 3 Disadvantages of Shanghai, China eSIM

1. Limited device support
To use an eSIM, your phone or tablet must support it. Many new models do, but older or budget devices may not. You will need to check if your device works with eSIM, which can be a bit of trouble. If you need to buy a new device, that adds extra cost.

2. Not usable on multiple devices
A normal SIM card can be moved easily between phones, but eSIMs are built into one device. This means you cannot quickly switch it to another phone or tablet. For people using more than one device while travelling in China, this can be inconvenient.

3. No local phone number
Most eSIM data plans do not include a phone number, or you may have to pay extra for one. This can be a problem when making local calls, such as booking a restaurant or contacting your hotel. Regular SIM cards usually include both data and a phone number, which is more practical for some travellers.
