What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM card that lets you connect to mobile networks without using a physical SIM. You can activate it by scanning a QR code online and start using mobile data in different countries.

How a Shanghai eSIM Works in China?

A Shanghai eSIM works just like a normal SIM card but in digital form. You set it up by scanning a QR code from your provider, and you can use the internet and make calls easily.

Shanghai eSIMs can hold several phone numbers and connect to more than one network, which is useful for travellers who want to save money and stay connected. Most new iPhones and Android phones support eSIMs, and they can be used in all cities across China.

Airalo provides several eSIM plans for travellers in China. You can choose between 1GB for 3 days at £3.50 and 50GB for 30 days at £38.00. These plans work on China Unicom’s 4G/LTE network and are easy to activate for use in Shanghai and across China.

However, the smaller data options may not be enough for travellers who use social media or stream videos often. Plans such as 1GB for 3 days or 3GB for 7 days can run out quickly. Prices are also quite high compared with some other eSIM providers, meaning you might pay more for each gigabyte.

Airalo offers fixed plan lengths of 3, 7, 15, or 30 days, which may not suit all travellers. Those staying for shorter or unusual trip durations might find it less convenient.

Overall, Airalo eSIMs are reliable and easy to use but may not be the best choice for travellers who need larger data allowances or more flexible plan options.

SimOptions provides several data options in China, starting from 1 GB up to 50 GB. The 1 GB plan, priced at around £3.90, is one of the most popular choices.

However, some plans have longer validity periods, usually between 7 and 30 days, which may be ideal for long-term stays. Data speed may vary as SimOptions does not specify the network operator or confirm 5G support.

These eSIMs offer data-only service, so calls and SMS are not available. Despite these limits, SimOptions remains a practical choice for travellers who need quick and easy mobile internet access in China.

Nomad offers several eSIM plans for travellers in China, with data options ranging from 1GB to 50GB. These eSIMs work on the China Unicom network and are 5G ready for fast connections.

Nomad’s China eSIMs are data only and must be installed within 30 days after purchase. The plan starts once you first connect to a network in China. Calls and SMS are not supported.

Although Nomad eSIMs are cheaper than some brands like Airalo or SimOptions, they are still more expensive than Trip.com’s eSIM plans. A validity period of 7 to 90 days may suit most people, but 1GB of data for 7 days is usually not enough for most travellers. It is best to compare your data needs before buying to choose the most suitable plan.

3 Benefits of Using a China eSIM in Shanghai

1. Instant connection when you arrive in China
With an eSIM, you can connect to the internet as soon as you land at the airport. There is no need to buy a SIM card at a shop or wait for delivery. Once the eSIM is downloaded in advance, you can go online straight away to book a taxi or find your hotel easily.

2. No risk of losing or damaging a SIM card
Traditional SIM cards are tiny and easy to lose or break, especially while travelling. An eSIM is digital, so you do not need to remove or insert anything. This makes it safer and more convenient during your trip.

3. Use dual SIM for more flexibility
An eSIM lets you use two mobile networks on one phone. You can keep your local number active while using data in China. This is useful for travellers visiting several countries as it avoids the need to change SIM cards each time.

This was my second stay at Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World, and I'm very grateful for Oliver's help and his attentive service throughout. They provided an excellent room, high up with a great view, which I was very pleased with. The location is superb, making it easy to get anywhere. All the staff were warm and thoughtful, proactively greeting guests, which made for a great experience. The breakfast was also very generous. The only minor drawback was that even with the air conditioning set to 30℃, the room remained quite cold, and the air blowing out felt like a cold draft... Shanghai in early March is still pretty chilly.

My stay at the Pullman Shanghai Jing An was fantastic, and what impressed me the most was the front desk service. The staff were incredibly warm, gentle, and always wore a welcoming smile. Check-in was swift and efficient, and they were patient and thorough throughout the entire process. Whether I had questions about the hotel facilities, local transportation, or even small, impromptu requests, they responded thoughtfully and were always proactive in helping. Their professionalism and attentiveness made me feel completely at home. The attention to detail and high standard of service made my trip exceptionally reassuring. I highly recommend this hotel and will definitely choose to stay here again next time!

Everything was perfect. Upon check-in, the front desk arranged a high-floor room with a garden view for us, which made our first stay at the Garden Hotel exceptionally pleasant. The room was spacious and clean, and the view was fantastic. I called twice for bottled water and extra towels, and both times they were delivered very quickly. It's rare to find a hotel in the city center with free parking. Due to time constraints, we didn't get to use other hotel facilities, including dining, but the cafe on the ground floor looked very inviting.

A tranquil oasis in the heart of the city. The location is excellent: very close to Yuyuan Garden Metro Station Exit 7. It's also within walking distance to the Bund, Yuyuan Garden, and Jinling East Road Ferry Terminal. The Huangpu River cruise included in the package was fantastic; we enjoyed an hour of beautiful scenery from the boat. The hotel entrance is beautifully designed, and as soon as we arrived, the doorman proactively helped us with our luggage and escorted us to the elevator. The room was clean and tidy, with views of both the historic buildings along the Bund and the modern skyline of Lujiazui. It's a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city, and our whole family slept soundly. The breakfast offered a great variety of both Chinese and Western dishes, and the made-to-order noodle station was particularly outstanding. They even offer a sweet soup in the evening, and the mini-bar in the room was well-stocked. The attention to detail is truly impressive. I'll definitely stay here again on my next visit to Shanghai.

The hotel has a great location, very close to Nanjing Pedestrian Road, which makes it convenient for shopping and walking around. The room is clean and well-maintained, and overall the stay was comfortable. One small downside is that the lighting in the room is a bit dim, which makes it slightly difficult to get ready, especially for doing makeup. The staff are very helpful, especially when assisting with Taobao deliveries. I also requested a one-hour late check-out, and they kindly allowed it without any extra charge, which I really appreciated. Huge thanks to the hotel for arranging my preferred room – it was actually the exact same one I stayed in last Chinese New Year! What a lucky number, 1818. The front desk staff was so attentive and patient. And Xiaoqian, the attendant on the 18th floor, remembered all my habits from last year! She made sure the room was spotless and beautifully arranged every day, making it truly feel like home. The lion dance on the first day of the New Year was a real highlight. Even though the breakfast restaurant was crowded during the CNY period, the service was much faster than last year. This is, as always, my absolute favorite hotel. See you next time! ^_^

Facilities: The bathroom sink wasn't very practical; water splashed everywhere easily. Environment: The breakfast area and lobby bar are shared and quite small. Service: The hotel service was really good. The front desk staff, especially Loretta, were very professional. She deserves a huge commendation – even on her days off, she'd message me to say I could reach out to her anytime if I needed anything. The concierge service was also excellent, promptly anticipating guests' needs, making both check-in and check-out very smooth. Housekeeping was great too; turndown service was always done by the time I returned to my room. Breakfast is a crucial indicator of a hotel's quality, reflecting its attention to detail and standards through its offerings and quality control. After I spoke with the hotel, there was an improvement the next day. The bakery items were truly outstanding; the pastries were perfectly flaky, and both the pancakes and waffles were delicious. The fried dishes also had a great texture.

Five out of five stars! A trip to the quarry, healed by beautiful scenery and heartwarming service ✨ I made a special trip on Saturday to check out the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, and the entire experience exceeded my expectations, perfectly embodying high-end luxury and thoughtful consideration. Upon checking in, I immediately experienced the hotel's photography service. The photographer was incredibly professional, excellent at finding angles, understanding lighting and composition, and patiently guided my poses and movements. He captured stunning, atmospheric shots, effortlessly freezing the unique beauty of the quarry and wonderful moments – it was such a pleasant surprise~ I must particularly commend our exclusive butler, Alisa! She was enthusiastic and meticulous throughout our stay. She proactively addressed our needs before and after check-in, meticulously handled itinerary planning and detailed arrangements. She efficiently resolved all sorts of minor issues immediately, responding promptly and handling everything thoughtfully. She was gentle and reliable, making the entire journey worry-free and comfortable, and we felt incredibly warm🥰 The hotel itself certainly lives up to its name as a ”world architectural wonder” 🏨. The 88-meter-deep quarry landscape is truly breathtaking, the water curtain in the lobby is vibrant and beautiful, and the cliffside scenery is grand and unique. The guest room facilities are high-end and complete, clean and elegant, with floor-to-ceiling windows directly facing the stunning views. The public areas are fully equipped, and every detail exudes quality. It was an immersive experience of the romance of humanity and nature intertwined~

As a couple who has lived in Shanghai together for almost 10 years, with one of us also Shanghainese, we have been to a lot of the best places in Shanghai, and some of the more recommended places in about 20 cities in the broader nearby area. Nothing in the city or within several hours of high-speed rail compares to a stay at Ritz-Carlton Pudong. In Asia and indeed the planet, this impeccable hotel experience stands as an iconic example of old-world elegance and service. In addition, it also offers a unique view of both some of the most modern and tallest buildings and the city’s famed Bund riverside, home to a variety of art deco architectural masterpieces. We had the incredible good fortune to start our honeymoon at the Ritz in Pudong, and this last stay was our last honeymoon treat. As always, it was a spectacular experience that we cannot recommend enough. The most extraordinary part of the stay really is the staff, they are all world class people who go above and beyond to make the Ritz-Carlton Pudong such an exceptional institution in one of the world’s leading cities. Sincere thanks to the whole team for making this happen, including Cherryl, who made reservation delightfully effortless, Chris who helped us to our room, and Joey and Ruby who helped in the evening. Special and heartfelt thanks to the whole team who make the Club Lounge experience world beating: Eddie and Junita, who both lead by example, have a deep passion for the details that create excellence, as well as being just the nicest people. They are both incredibly inspiring leaders and professionals. Claire is generally excellent there but also was phenomenally helpful to get a bag back when it was left behind, we really apricated that. Jeramy and Vivian also are amazing, as are Club Lounge’s chef’s Joe and Austin. Sherry is a real star, attentive, sharp and so helpful. Last but not least, Helen, who was the first person to greet us after we got married, and fittingly the last person to help us create personalised room key cards with our wedding photo on it, and most recently a special photo of family from our honeymoon. Those keycards are really cool keepsakes, but making them is not as simple as you might think: the image is etched into the key, not printed, so the original photo needs to be translated by AI into an image that the etching system is capable of delivering, which is really impressive. When I showed my mom who lives very far away, even she was impressed with Helen’s work. Ordinarily we prioritise new experiences over more of the same, regardless of how comfortable and nice it is. But regardless of how hard we try, we have not been able to figure out a better way to celebrate our biggest moments than a stay at the Ritz in Pudong.

The hotel's location is quite good, just a few minutes' walk from University Road Commercial Street and not far from Wanda Plaza. There are plenty of diverse restaurants nearby, offering a rich variety of choices. The hotel lobby is open-plan and though not large, it has a stylish design. The rooms are spacious and also show a designer's thoughtful touches; the air conditioning provides ample warm air. The hygiene is also good. The breakfast selection is quite rich for an economy hotel, ensuring you can eat well and heartily. The highlight is the service, which is warm and attentive, and they even gifted us breakfast. I stumbled upon this hotel by chance, and it offered little surprises in every aspect. It's excellent, and I'll definitely choose it again next time. I absolutely love this place! I stayed here two years ago and it left such a lasting impression that I had to come back. The hotel has a beautiful, avant-garde artistic style. The lobby is incredibly colorful, and the common areas are huge, with plenty of sofas and a bar – perfect for chatting with friends. The room isn't big, but it's very clean, and the white and red color scheme is super striking. All the little design touches are also very convenient. The hotel is conveniently located near Nanjing Street, making it easy to get around and explore the area. There is a convenience store close by, which is very handy for quick purchases. For Muslim travelers, there is a halal restaurant nearby called Nizam, which is a big plus. The room was quite small and really only suitable for sleeping. Nice little hotel, but not for me. It is located right next to Sam's Club and that's always nice. Being able to eat Sam's pizza and hot dogs is always nice. The bed, while big, was not comfortable to me. I know everyone has their preferences on softness levels. When I stay at a hotel, l like mattresses I melt into because they are soft. Not that way here. But I know some people prefer these mattresses. They had a restaurant and bar that looked nice, but I didn't visit as I had dinner and drinks with others not staying at hotel. The real deal breaker for me was no refrigerator in my room. Some rooms may have them. Mine did not (that I could find at least). When I stay at a hotel for more than one night, a refrigerator is a must, either for leftover food or cold drinks. Also, for a superior queen room, I think it said balcony or terrace and sofa, none of which my room had. And for garden view... Definitely not a pretty garden, more like a cement walkway and Sam's. And lastly, no room service... I know it's not advertised as having room service... But paying nearly 500rmb a night, just having a club sandwich or dumplings available late night would be nice. Maybe work out a deal with Sam's. Colleague stayed at a hotel less than 10 mins away that was cheaper, had a bathtub, had a late night menu, and had a refrigerator. Staff were great! Very helpful! If I go back to area, not sure if I would choose again. The access to Sam's is nice. I'd like to try out their bar and restaurant. But the no refrigerator scares me off a bit.

The room was large and spacious with well-adjusted lighting. The service was attentive and warm, always ready to assist. Breakfast offered a rich and comprehensive variety. It's close to Hongqiao high-speed rail, metro, and airport. I recommend staying here when in Shanghai.

Jing'an District Shanghai|2.12km from city centre
The location gets a 99/100! This place is a major hub, super convenient for getting anywhere, surrounded by large shopping malls. Jing'an Temple, the Park Hotel, Wukang Road Historical and Cultural Zone, Anfu Road, and Huaihai Middle Road are all basically within a half-hour's journey, which is perfect for aimless wanderers like me~ If you're coming by subway, take Exit 6 at Jing'an Temple station; it's the closest way to walk. Room: The facilities are definitely old and small. The hairdryer is an old-fashioned one from the last century that you have to hold down the button to use, so I didn't wash my hair that night. The basic room type is only 38 square meters, and the luggage rack needs to be pulled out, otherwise, even a 20-inch suitcase can't be opened flat. Despite being old, it's very well maintained and clean, with no visible stains. Service: Top marks! Every staff member was genuinely friendly, proactively helping with luggage, guiding check-in, greeting guests, and holding doors open when leaving. The details of an old-school hotel are evident everywhere. Breakfast: The freshly made waffles and pancakes with cream are absolutely delicious; the cream is perfectly light. The xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) are also worth trying. Surroundings: The hotel is connected to Shanghai Centre, so there are restaurants, cafes, and a small supermarket right outside. It's a bit like the expat supermarkets in Beijing's embassy district, with a lot of imported foods, which makes sense given the large number of foreigners in the area.

The Bund Area Shanghai|1.78km from city centre
For my birthday, the hotel upgraded me to a room facing the street, with a fantastic view of Nanjing Road and the Bund right outside the window. I was also pleasantly surprised with a small birthday cake. As photography enthusiasts, we made sure to check out the Peace Hotel Museum and all the other photo-worthy spots. We stayed on a Friday, and the jazz performance in the lobby on the first floor was absolutely amazing – a great way for old friends who love Shanghai to relax. The breakfast buffet was also excellent, especially since it was a Saturday and we could dine until 11:00 AM, which was a very thoughtful touch. I highly recommend this historic Peace Hotel with its century-old heritage to anyone who's considering a stay!

Lujiazui Area Shanghai|3.12km from city centre
Exceeded my expectations! I originally thought a city-view room wouldn't offer much, but it still had floor-to-ceiling windows with panoramic views of the Oriental Pearl Tower and the river. The room was clean and tidy, and the facilities were well-maintained, feeling uncluttered. The location is conveniently situated for easy access while still being quiet. The expansive views are a real plus, preventing any feeling of being cooped up. The service was warm and polite, making for a great experience.

I truly experienced the quality and service of a high-end hotel. The location is excellent, making it easy to get around, and the overall design is subtly luxurious and stylish. The room was clean and tidy, well-laid out, and fully equipped with amenities. The bedding was soft and comfortable, leading to a great night's sleep. The staff provided meticulous service; they were warm and attentive without being overbearing, which made for a very comfortable stay. It's suitable for both business travel and vacations; the experience was exceptional, and I highly recommend it. The dedicated concierge service from Katrina and Emily was also excellent.

Hongqiao District Shanghai|7.13km from city centre
The Radisson Collection Hotel, Yangtze Shanghai, as a seasoned five-star establishment, boasts a convenient location near the Yan'an elevated road and the Hongqiao CBD. While the rooms show their age, they are fully equipped and offer city views with a decent level of comfort. The dining service is outstanding; the dishes at Cui Zhu restaurant are incredibly delicious. The Cantonese cuisine is exquisite, and the buffet is extensive. The staff are professional and enthusiastic, especially the front desk, which is highly efficient. Overall, it offers great value for money and is highly recommended for both leisure and business travelers.

3 Disadvantages of Shanghai, China eSIM

1. Limited device support
To use an eSIM, your phone or tablet must support it. Many new models do, but older or budget devices may not. You will need to check if your device works with eSIM, which can be a bit of trouble. If you need to buy a new device, that adds extra cost.

2. Not usable on multiple devices
A normal SIM card can be moved easily between phones, but eSIMs are built into one device. This means you cannot quickly switch it to another phone or tablet. For people using more than one device while travelling in China, this can be inconvenient.

3. No local phone number
Most eSIM data plans do not include a phone number, or you may have to pay extra for one. This can be a problem when making local calls, such as booking a restaurant or contacting your hotel. Regular SIM cards usually include both data and a phone number, which is more practical for some travellers.

We had enough data on 1GB daily for the entire trip. All international messengers and YouTube worked perfectly. We connected our SIM card before entering China. The connection worked even in the mountains of Zhangjiajie.

It's very good, although unfortunately it can be slow sometimes with large files. But it saved me when another eSIM failed. Very good.

These are probably the only eSIMs that work perfectly with TikTok. So if you need TikTok, definitely get this eSIM option.

I recommend this eSIM; everything works, including GPT chat, Instagram, and other services that require a VPN in China. 2 GB per day was enough for me.
