Analysis & Recommendations:

  • For Most UK Tourists: A 5-10 GB plan with 7-15 days validity is more than sufficient. You can have Google Maps to get around the cobblestone roads of Cusco, train schedules to get to Machu Picchu, ceviche tastings in Miraflores, and maybe even send a video message home to show off that Andean sunset.
  • For Explorers & Content Creators: If you’re live-streaming from Sacsayhuamán as the llamas roam by, uploading daily videos from the Sacred Valley, and using your eSIM as a hotspot in a remote Andean lodge – then get yourself a 15 GB+ plan or Unlimited. From the Andean peaks to the coastline of Paracas, stay connected for all of Peru.
  • For Multi-Country Trips: Get our Peru & Bolivia eSIM and stay connected across two countries. No need to buy a new SIM card, no risk of losing signal as you cross the border – just stay connected from Cusco to La Paz and beyond to the salt flats of Uyuni.

Mobile Coverage in Peru: What Travelers Should Know

Peru’s mobile coverage is better than most expect—but it comes with altitude.

4G/LTE is good throughout cities and popular tourist spots. Expect good coverage in Lima, Cusco, Miraflores, and the Sacred Valley. Most restaurants, hotels, and plazas have good mobile coverage. Google Maps, WhatsApp, and Uber all work well.

Don’t worry, Machu Picchu is not a dead zone. The town of Aguas Calientes has good 4G coverage. At the citadel, mobile coverage is a bit patchy, with some areas having coverage and others not. It’s a good idea to download your ticket and map before going up.

The Andes have poor mobile coverage, but this is to be expected. If you’re on a high-altitude trek, like Rainbow Mountain, Lares, or sections of the Inca Trail, you won’t have mobile coverage for large sections of the route. This is normal. Download offline maps and tell someone your plans.

The Amazon? Forget it. You will be off-grid, but lodges near Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos may have good Wi-Fi in common areas, but mobile coverage is poor once you’re upriver.

5G is available in Lima and some areas of Miraflores, San Isidro, and Barranco. Everywhere else, it’s 4G, but this is fine for what you need.

Stay Connected in Peru:

  • Make a call over data: Yes. WhatsApp, FaceTime, Messenger—all work perfectly over eSIM data.
  • Use your UK number: Yes. Wi-Fi Calling will work with your UK SIM if you’re connected to Wi-Fi or eSIM data.
  • Emergency number: 911. Available in cities and most tourist areas. Not available in the mountains or jungle, so think ahead.

Main networks in Peru:

There are three major networks in Peru: Claro, Movistar, and Entel.

  • Claro is the best network for national coverage, especially in rural and high-altitude areas.
  • Movistar is good in Lima and along the coast.
  • Entel is good in the south, including Cusco and Puno.

Most international eSIMs connect to Claro or Movistar—you’re in good hands.

FAQ – Peru eSIM

  • How does an eSIM work in Peru?

After purchase, your eSIM automatically connects to major local networks like Claro or Movistar. Keep your UK SIM in your phone. Just enable the eSIM for data in your settings, turn on data roaming, and you’ll have high-speed internet across the country—from Lima to Cusco, and everywhere in between.
  • Do eSIMs change your phone number?

No. Most Peru travel eSIMs are data-only, giving you a fast local connection without touching your UK number. Your regular number stays active for calls and texts. For peace of mind, check your plan’s details before purchase.
  • Is it cheaper to use an eSIM than UK roaming in Peru?

Yes, significantly. eSIMs offer far better value than standard UK roaming. You pay a fixed upfront price for local data—no bill shocks, no small print. That means you can navigate the streets of Miraflores, share live shots of llamas at Sacsayhuamán, and upload your Machu Picchu ticket confirmation without a second thought.
  • Can I buy an eSIM before travelling to Peru from the UK?

Yes, and it’s the smart way to travel. Buy your Peru eSIM online before you fly. You’ll receive a QR code by email, so you’re connected the moment you land at Jorge Chávez International Airport or Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete. No SIM queues, no hunting for Wi-Fi—just data, ready when you are.
