📍 Must-Visit Areas in Koh Samui

Koh Samui isn't just one big, uniform beach. Far from it! Every corner of the island has its own unique character and vibe. From the hustle and bustle of the main beaches to the quiet little coves, here’s where to lay your towel!

Chaweng: the vibrant heart of Koh Samui

Chaweng: the vibrant heart of Koh Samui

Chaweng is the iconic beach of Koh Samui. Seven kilometres of white sand (yes, you read that right!), crystal-clear water, and non-stop action from morning till night. If you're looking for a lively beach, you've come to the right place! Jet-skiing, paddleboarding, parasailing... every water sport imaginable is waiting for you.

As evening falls, Chaweng reveals a completely different side. Beach bars light up, the music picks up, and the terraces fill up. When it comes to food, you're spoilt for choice: from little street stalls whipping up a pad Thai for just a few pounds, to fine-dining restaurants with stunning sea views.

Lamai: the laid-back charm of the south

Lamai: the laid-back charm of the south

Lamai is often affectionately known as Chaweng's charming little sister. It's a bit more laid-back, with fewer crowds, offering a wonderfully relaxed vibe, yet still brimming with a fantastic array of activities just waiting to be discovered!

The atmosphere is much more laid-back, with an almost hippie vibe in places. Coconut palms fringe a stunning beach dotted with large boulders, giving the landscape a wonderfully wild feel.

What's more, don't miss the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks (also known as Grandfather and Grandmother). Their... shall we say "suggestive" shapes certainly give visitors a bit of a giggle!

📌 Lamai: you’ll find authentic Thai charm with little seafood restaurants right on the water’s edge, alongside trendy bars and mini-markets. For the adventurers, it’s the perfect starting point for trekking up to the Na Muang waterfalls, which are just a fifteen-minute scooter ride away.

Bophut and Fisherman's Village: Authenticity and traditional charm

Bophut and Fisherman's Village: Authenticity and traditional charm

You’re bound to fall in love with Bophut and its Fisherman's Village! It’s like stepping back in time. The old wooden fishermen's houses have been transformed into local boutiques, trendy restaurants and chic cafes. Yet, the spirit of the fishing village remains perfectly intact to this day!

Bophut Beach? Peaceful, family-friendly and quite simply perfect for a swim or a sunset stroll.

📌 Trip.com recommends: Friday night is the highlight of the week in Bophut! The Walking Street Market takes over the entire main street, with mouth-watering local street food stalls, handmade crafts, and street performances featuring traditional dances... The atmosphere is unique and incredibly welcoming, and you'll get to meet plenty of locals.

Mae Nam and Choeng Mon: tranquillity and understated luxury

Mae Nam and Choeng Mon: tranquillity and understated luxury

Time to head to the more remote and secluded spots of Koh Samui! Mae Nam, in the north, is a long beach that's almost deserted. In a similar vein, Choeng Mon is an absolute must-visit! This little horseshoe-shaped bay is a true natural paradise, and some even consider it the most beautiful beach on Koh Samui.

These two spots are perfect if you really want to switch off, while staying just twenty minutes away from the main action.

Trip.com Tip: The coral reefs just offshore are perfect for snorkelling, so there’s no need to take a boat! If you’re looking to go scuba diving, you’ll need to venture a little further out.

A Peaceful Jungle Paradise – Worth the Escape Ayung Resort is a hidden gem tucked away in the lush jungle of Ubud. While the location is a bit remote — with travel into central Ubud taking up to an hour due to the single road access — the truth is, you won’t want to leave the resort at all. The views are absolutely breathtaking, overlooking the mountains and the serene beauty of the surrounding jungle. The entire resort is designed to bring peace and tranquility, with incredible attention to detail in both the architecture and landscaping. The on-site restaurants were excellent, the service impeccable, and the range of facilities and activities meant everything you needed was right there. Whether you’re after a relaxing escape or a deep connection to nature, this place delivers a 10/10 experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking to unwind and soak in the true beauty of Ubud without the crowds.

Overall, my stay was fantastic. The hotel has a distinct Balinese style, with lush greenery that really gives it a resort feel. The room was generally clean and quite spacious, with all the essential amenities functioning well, including the air conditioning and hot water. The staff were friendly and usually responded promptly to any issues. The location is relatively quiet, perfect for those looking to relax and escape the city hustle. If you need to go to the city center or popular attractions, taxis are quite convenient. All in all, it offers good value for money and is ideal for travelers seeking a relaxing getaway.

I had a pleasant stay at Sense Sunset Seminyak Hotel in Bali. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The hotel’s location on Sunset Road makes it easy to access the beach, shopping areas, and restaurants, while still being close to the airport. The swimming pool was well-maintained, and overall, the property felt safe and welcoming. For travelers looking for affordable comfort with solid amenities, this hotel is a smart choice

Ah, ”Eden Hotel” in Bali! It seems you're likely referring to one of the Grandmas Plus Hotels in Bali, specifically Grandmas Plus Hotel Seminyak or Grandmas Plus Hotel Airport. They are popular budget-friendly options in Bali. To give you a good review, I can summarize what people generally say about them, but if you stayed at a specific Grandmas Plus Hotel, let me know which one (e.g., Seminyak, Airport, Legian), and I can tailor the review even more. Here's a general overview of what people often say about Grandmas Plus Hotels in Bali, combining common feedback: Grandmas Plus Hotels, Bali (General Review) Overall Impression: Generally, Grandmas Plus Hotels are well-regarded as excellent value-for-money options, especially for budget travelers, solo travelers, and those looking for a convenient location. They often receive high ratings for their service and cleanliness. What people like most: * Excellent Location: This is a consistent highlight. * Seminyak: Very close to Seminyak Beach (often cited as a 5-minute walk) and within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, and bars. This makes it ideal for those wanting to explore the vibrant Seminyak area. * Airport: Convenient for early flights or quick stopovers due to its proximity to the airport. * Friendly and Helpful Staff: Many guests praise the staff for being amicable, attentive, and going out of their way to ensure a comfortable stay. They often mention the staff's smiles and willingness to help. * Cleanliness: The rooms and common areas are consistently described as sparkling clean and well-maintained. * Value for Money: Guests frequently mention that the price paid for the amenities and location is a great deal. * Breakfast: Often receives positive remarks for being good, and sometimes even offering a ”different gourmet food selection” daily. * Amenities: While generally basic, they offer essential amenities. Some locations have a pool, and many have a connected restaurant/bar. In-house spas are also mentioned as a plus. * Comfort Rooms (after checkout): Some hotels in the chain offer a ”comfort room” which is a nice touch for guests with later flights. What people like least (or areas for improvement): * Room Size: A very common comment is that the rooms can be ”compact,” ”small,” or ”cramped,” especially for families. While well-designed and clean, they might feel a bit tight for some. * Noise: Depending on the room location, street noise, music, or bar noises can be audible, especially in Seminyak, which is a lively area. * Bathroom Ventilation/Issues: Some reviews mention a lack of exhaust fans in bathrooms, or occasional issues like drainage smells or spots on tiles. * Pool Size/Quality: For the Seminyak location, the pool is sometimes described as ”tiny” or ”very poor” and can get crowded. * Limited Amenities: While good for the price, some guests might miss certain features like mini-fridges or electric kettles in the rooms (though free mineral water is usually provided). Would I recommend this hotel? Based on common reviews, yes, I would recommend Grandmas Plus Hotels, especially if you are: * A budget-conscious traveler. * Looking for a hotel with an excellent, central location (Seminyak) or close to the airport. * Prioritizing friendly service and cleanliness over spacious rooms or extensive luxury amenities. * Traveling solo or as a couple (larger groups or families might find rooms a bit small). They are often described as a great base for exploring Bali, offering a comfortable and practical stay without a hefty price tag.

Location wise is super strategic, the breakfast was good and the staffs are friendly (expected as Balinese hospitality in general is a win). The room is neat, the mattress is clean, towels need to change it has discoloured thou. The matress is acceptable. What’s not acceptable is the bathroom smells, the sewage is so bad, the toilet is has smells of a fish market and whenever I flush the toilet, the odor of the water is really bad. Lastly, the noises at wee hours like 3am onwards, u can hear bagging on the door, shoutings from drunken party animal and an “explicit” sound from next door. NOT recommended for family with younger or teen children.

What really stood out during this stay was the hotel’s flexibility and practical approach to guest needs. They allowed early check-in, which was a huge value-add after travel, especially knowing I would be checking out very early the next morning. Even more impressive: the team proactively allowed me to use my complimentary breakfast on the day of arrival instead of the next day, since I wouldn’t make it to breakfast hours due to an early departure. That level of common sense and customer-first thinking is refreshing—and frankly, how hospitality should operate. The process was smooth, staff were accommodating, and nothing felt transactional. This is a great choice if you value efficiency, adaptability, and service that actually works around real travel schedules rather than rigid policy checkboxes. Would book again without hesitation.

We like the hotel location as it’s conveniently located on a street with many restaurants and cafes option. There’s also a convenience store opposite the hotel. I personally love the hotel service as they are really friendly and there was one day where I forgot to put out the housekeeping tag on the door. I WhatsApp the hotel to ask if they can still clean my room and they assured me that it will be cleaned. Communication was quick and efficient and I even got my laundry cleaned for a very cheap price. Where do I even begin... Probably one of the best luxurious hotel experience you can get in South East Asia - from the breathtaking taking architecture to the extremely professional yet warm hospitality from each and every single staff I met. Apurva Kempinski is definitely the best Kempinski experience thus far and big thumbs up to the staff that made this experience such an unforgettable one. Special mention to the 2 staff working at the lobby entrance (grab pickup point) who took the initiative to head out to the security post to collect my emergency medication which I ordered via Grabmart and the Grab delivery rider was insistent on not coming to the lobby from the security post as ”lobby was too far”. The 2 staff assured me that the grab riders are supposed to deliver to the lobby collection point and then headed out to collect from the rider. (This was on 27 Dec around 12am). Special shout out to these 2 staffs :) Highly recommended to both couples and families as Apurva is packed with facilities for all traveller types!

We had a lovely 4 nights stay at Kenran Resort in Ubud. The rooms were spacious, clean, and beautifully designed with a calming atmosphere. The staff were consistently warm, welcoming, and helpful throughout our visit. The pool is a highlight — stunning views and a perfect place to unwind. The resort also offers two restaurants on-site, which was convenient. Breakfast was decent, though we felt it could use a bit more variety. One thing to note: the location is a bit far from central Ubud, and local Gojek drivers often hesitate to come here. This means relying on the hotel's transport service, which comes at a premium. Pros: The resort is absolutely beautiful. The service is top-tier. Every single person says hello to you and greets you with a warm smile. Room service was delicious and they have a wide variety of menu items that can be delivered within 30 to 40 minutes.  Cons: The location isn’t great. It’s a bit in the middle of nowhere. There were ants (pictured) in my bed the entire time I was there, regardless of daily cleanings. The gym is not fully equipped so if you are really into working out, this is not a good place for you to stay. I felt the gym was a bit of an afterthought, and it did not really reflect the quality of the rest of the resort. At sometimes there would be 12 people in there and there just isn’t enough space or equipment to accommodate more than three or four in my opinion. I’ve stayed at three star chain hotels that had better equipped gyms than this one.  Overall, you will not regret staying here, but you could get a private pool villa in a better location for these prices in Bali.

On the first day we arrived at the hotel, our child went into the swimming pool and cut his foot. The hotel called a doctor, who dressed the wound and prescribed antibiotics. However, due to the hotel’s negligence, we had to spend the first week taking care of our child and were unable to even leave the hotel, which caused us significant inconvenience and loss. The staff at the reception are very courteous and helpful notably one lady 'Ayu'. The restaurant or housekeeping is perhaps understaffed - I am not sure since we had to remind through the front desk that the plates and cutlery needed clean up after the room service was ordered. The aesthetics of the hotel are excellent but some maintenance in form of facelift is perhaps due. The property boosts beautiful swimming pools and gentle soothing tropical traditional music offering a very warm welcoming feeling. The family room which we opted for is large and spacious with large 2 single beds, a large king bed and a nice private jacuzzi. The restaurant has a decent choice of western and asian breakfast options with decent choice for vegetarians too. The hotel had kept ready breakfast boxes upon our request for us at 5:30 am since we had an early morning flight to catch. We felt this is a good sign of hospitality which other bigger brand hotels should also follow in other destinations.

Check in was smooth. Staffs were friendly. Hotel is huge, they have 3 blocks. I got the far end of the block which was a little bit away from the reception and the restaurants and the open space for smoking. In 2 circumstances, i walked up to the room and the door card could not work. This happened in 2 different nights. I had to walk down and got it reset, but the staffs didnt bother to apologise for this. The first time it happened I was okay, but the second time it happened, I got pissed off, because it was a long walk from the room to the reception. If you order food delivery, it will be a long walk to take your food at the reception. If you got the rooms at the reception level, I'm sure it will be a great experience like the first time I was there in the Junior Suite, but this time it was not as pleasant. This is a popular 'influencer hotel' with four hotels within its complex, connected by shuttle buses. There's also a museum worth checking out. It gets very crowded, especially at breakfast, which can be a bit chaotic. Don't rely on reviews from certain social media apps (like Xiaohongshu); they seem exaggerated and possibly paid for. Just eat breakfast at this hotel; there's no need to go to the other hotels in the complex. If you're eating lunch and dinner within the complex, the food is generally decent, not as amazing as those social media apps claim, but their local cuisine is quite distinctive. The hotel service is very good; I needed a doctor once during my stay, and they arrived quickly, and the price was reasonable. The airport transfer service was also excellent and very welcoming. The only thing that felt a bit off was that my deposit hadn't been refunded even after a week. Overall, if you enjoy staying and relaxing at a hotel, it's definitely recommended.

🌊 Top 5 Activities and Landmarks in Koh Samui

While the beaches are undoubtedly a must-see in Koh Samui, the island is brimming with activities and sights you won't want to miss. We’ve handpicked the very best things to do during your stay:

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary: A magical and ethical encounter with elephants

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary

Elephant Jungle Sanctuary is the ultimate must-do in Koh Samui. Dedicated to animal welfare, there are no elephant rides here. Instead, you’ll get to spend real quality time with them—feeding them, learning their stories, and even bathing them in the river!

The activity lasts around half a day, and a Thai lunch is included. It’s the perfect choice for families. The guides will share everything there is to know about conservation efforts and why these species are endangered... It’s both educational and moving. All in all, it’s an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai): The island's iconic temple

Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai)

The Big Buddha? You can't miss it! This twelve-metre-high golden statue sits proudly on a small islet, and it's visible from miles around! Built in 1972, the temple attracts local pilgrims and tourists from all over the world alike.

Climb the steps (watch out, it’s a bit of a climb!) adorned with naga dragons. At the top, you’ll discover not only the main temple but also a breathtaking view over the entire north of the island and the sea as far as the eye can see.

As we've briefly mentioned, the waters around Koh Samui are simply perfect for scuba diving. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned diver, there are spots to suit every level.

The most famous spots? Sail Rock, Chumphon Pinnacle, and especially nearby Koh Tao, which is world-renowned for its truly exceptional reefs.

Underwater, it’s a non-stop spectacle: schools of multicoloured tropical fish, sea turtles gliding peacefully by, rays, and harmless reef sharks...

PADI dive centres are dotted all over the island, offering introductory dives for beginners, certification courses, and day trips to the very best spots. Even if you don't dive, snorkelling from beaches like Choeng Mon is well worth the trip.

Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park: An unforgettable nature escape

Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park

Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is the one trip you simply can't miss! An archipelago of 42 pristine islands thirty kilometres north-west of Koh Samui. Limestone peaks rising from emerald waters, deserted beaches, hidden lagoons, and mysterious caves... in short, it’s a little slice of paradise on earth.

Most tours offer kayaking through sea caves, a hike to a viewpoint with a 360° view of the entire archipelago, a visit to the emerald lagoon hidden inside an island, and of course, snorkelling in crystal-clear waters.

The park is also home to plenty of wildlife: dolphins, sea turtles, pythons, tropical birds... Thai lunch is usually served on the boat or, if you're lucky, on a deserted beach.

Spa and wellness: Thai-style relaxation

Spa and wellness

Koh Samui is also a true sanctuary of well-being. The island is brimming with spas, from little beachside massage parlours (at less than £10 an hour, it’s an absolute steal!) to five-star luxury spas in dreamy settings. Traditional Thai massage is even UNESCO-listed!

Many centres offer comprehensive programmes: sunrise yoga, meditation, detox cures, and Ayurvedic treatments... Some spas boast direct sea views, while others are tucked away in the jungle for total immersion.

☀️ Best Time to Visit Koh Samui

Koh Samui boasts a unique tropical climate that’s completely different from the rest of Thailand! Thanks to its geographical position, the island is sheltered from the southwest monsoons, meaning its weather patterns are actually the reverse of Phuket's. Here’s everything you need to know:

🚤 Day Trips from Koh Samui

Koh Samui also makes a fantastic strategic base for exploring the neighbouring islands, which are every bit as stunning! Here are our three favourite destinations for day trips:

Samui Island: Pink dolphins, snorkelling and Pig Island

Samui Island: Pink dolphins, snorkelling and Pig Island

The Samui Island tour is one of the most complete day trips you can take from Koh Samui.

You’ll leave in the morning for a fun day out at sea. The tour includes pink dolphin watching, snorkelling in clear waters around Dan Island, and a stop at Pig Island, where pigs roam and swim along the beach.

Lunch is provided either on the boat or on a quiet beach, depending on the tour, and hotel transfers are included. It’s an ideal choice if you want to see and do a lot in just one day.

📌 Practical information:
Transport: Boat with hotel transfers included
Highlights: pink dolphins, snorkelling, Dan Island (Pig Island), lunch included

Koh Phangan: Temples, wild jungle and the legendary Full Moon Party

Koh Phangan: Temples, wild jungle and the legendary Full Moon Party

Koh Phangan is the more bohemian and lively big sister of Koh Samui. It’s world-famous for the Full Moon Party, but there’s much more to enjoy. Just 30–45 minutes by ferry, this less developed island has kept a relaxed, hippie feel and plenty of natural beauty.

📌 Practical information:

  • Journey time: 30–45 minutes by ferry from Thong Sala Pier
  • Transport: Hourly ferries (Lomprayah or Seatran), around 200–400 baht one way
  • Must-sees: Phaeng Waterfall, the wild beaches of Bottle Beach and Haad Yao (boat access only), jungle temples in the mountains, yoga classes, cool night markets, and of course the Full Moon Party if it matches your dates 🌕

Koh Tao: The ultimate scuba diving paradise

Koh Tao: The ultimate scuba diving paradise

Koh Tao (meaning “Turtle Island”) is widely seen as Thailand’s top diving destination. This small rocky island is just 1.5 hours from Koh Samui by speedboat (or 2.5 hours by ferry) and offers some of the best dive sites in the Gulf of Thailand, with clear water and rich marine life.

📌 Practical information:

  • Journey time: 1 hour 30 minutes by speedboat, or 2 hours 30 minutes by ferry
  • Transport: Lomprayah Catamaran or Seatran Discovery Ferry, about 600–800 baht one way
  • Highlights: famous dive spots like Sail Rock and Chumphon Pinnacle, beautiful beaches such as Sairee Beach, great snorkelling at Shark Bay, scenic viewpoints, and some of the cheapest PADI dive courses in the world

Koh Tao is an ideal place to get your Open Water Diver certification. With over 50 professional dive schools and excellent value, a full 4-day course costs around 8,000–10,000 baht (about £170–£215), compared with roughly £340–£510 in Europe. That’s why divers from all over the world come here to learn.
