🚢 Hong Kong → Macau by ferry (the most convenient)

The ferry is truly the simplest and most popular way to travel for both tourists and locals alike! You'll find two main companies sharing the market: TurboJet (the most well-known, naturally!) and Cotai Water Jet.

The boats are modern and air-conditioned, with comfortable reclining seats. Best of all, departures are fairly frequent—every 15–30 minutes during the day!

Where does it depart from and where does it arrive?

From Hong Kong, you have 3 main options:

  • Sheung Wan (Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal) - It's the city's main terminal!
    • Just above Sheung Wan MTR Station (Exit D);
    • The most convenient if you're on Hong Kong Island;
    • Restaurants and boutiques inside to pass the time while you wait.
🚢 Book your official Cotai Water Jet ticket from Hong Kong Sheung Wan to Macau Taipa today from just £16.21.
  • Tsim Sha Tsui (China Ferry Terminal, Kowloon)
    • Handy if you're staying on the Kowloon side;
    • A 10-minute walk from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR;
    • Often less crowded than Sheung Wan.
  • Hong Kong Airport (SkyPier)
    • Perfect if you're in transit without going through HK immigration!
    • You head straight from your flight to the ferry to Macau;
    • Huge time-saver.

In Macau, two terminals are available:

  • Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal: in the historic centre, near the Ruins of St. Paul’s
  • Taipa Ferry Terminal: closer to Cotai and the mega-casinos (Venetian, Galaxy...)

Macau Terminal

Duration from Sheung Wan

Nearby

Outer Harbour

55-60 min

Historic Centre, Senado Square

Taipa

60-70 min

Cotai Strip, giant casinos

How much does it cost?

Prices vary depending on the class, departure time, and selected day:

Destination

Economy (Day)

Economy (Night)

Super Class

Outer Harbour

~£17–£19

~£22–£23

~£30–£33

Taipa

~£17–£21

~£22–£25

~£32–£34

However, realistically, Economy Class is more than enough for a one-hour journey! Super Class offers wider seats and a VIP lounge at boarding, but for just 55 minutes, it can quickly get expensive!

Opening times

When it comes to schedules, it’s super handy: ferries run almost 24/7!

  • Daytime (07:00–23:00): departures every 15–30 minutes, depending on demand
  • At night (23:00-07:00): about every hour

Heads up for weekends: ferries are often fully booked, especially for Macau → HK returns on Sunday evenings!

📌 Trip.com tip: Book your tickets online in advance on Trip.com, especially for weekends and Chinese public holidays (Golden Week, Chinese New Year…).

How does boarding work?

Where to buy tickets:

  • Online (recommended!): on the company's official websites or on Trip.com;
  • Vending machines at the terminals;
  • Ticket counters (but the queue can be long).

The procedure:

  • Arrive 30-45 minutes early (immigration + security checks);
  • Hong Kong Exit Immigration (just have your passport and ticket ready to show);
  • Airport-style security screening (no liquids >100ml);
  • Boarding with an assigned seat number;
  • Smooth crossing (55 mins, free Wi‑Fi on some ferries);
  • Arriving in Macau: immigration on arrival (fill in the card in advance!)

📌Required documents: a passport is a must! Good news: most nationalities (French, Belgian, Swiss, Canadian...) do NOT need a visa for Macau for 30-90 days, depending on your passport. Be sure to check before you travel!

🚌 Hong Kong → Macau by bus via the bridge (the cheapest)

Hong Kong to Macao by bus via the bridge

The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, opened in 2018, is a real engineering achievement. At 34 miles (55 km) long, including a 4-mile (6.7 km) underwater tunnel, it is the longest sea bridge in the world. Crossing the bridge is an experience in itself, and it is also by far the cheapest way to travel between Hong Kong and Macau.

How does it work in practice?

The bus journey is done in several steps:

  1. Travel to the Hong Kong Port (HKBCF) near the airport
  2. Go through Hong Kong exit immigration (around 15–30 minutes)
  3. Buy a Golden Bus ticket (£7 / 65 HKD)
  4. Cross the bridge in 40–45 minutes
  5. Arrive at the Macau Port and pass entry immigration (15–30 minutes)
  6. Take a free casino shuttle bus to reach your final destination

The total transport duration

⚠️ You’ll often hear "40 minutes" for the journey, but the reality is quite different. Yep, that’s only the time on the bridge! Expect more like:

  • Transport to Hong Kong Port: 30-60 min
  • HK exit immigration: 15–30 minutes
  • HZMB Bridge: 40-45 min
  • Immigration on arrival in Macau: 15–30 min
  • Transport from Macau Port to destination: 15-30 min

How long should you allow? Around 2 hours 30 to 3 hours 30, compared to 1 hour 15 by ferry. It’s longer, but you’ll save 60%!

How to book your bus ticket to Macau

  • The budget option: Take a bus or taxi to Hong Kong Port (around 100–150 HKD), then buy a Golden Bus ticket on the spot for 65 HKD. The total cost is about 150 HKD, which is roughly £16.
  • The comfort option: Book a package with hotel pick-up. Prices usually range from 120 to 160 HKD, around £13–£17.

Golden Bus services run 24 hours a day, with departures every 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the time. You can pay with HKD cash, an Octopus card, or a bank card.

📌 Our tip: If you are short on time, taking the ferry may be faster. If you want to save money and enjoy the bridge experience, the bus is a great choice, especially if you are travelling light.

🚕 Hong Kong → Macau by cross-border taxi

A cross-border taxi is a flexible and convenient choice, especially if you’re travelling with others or carrying luggage. Just note that not all Hong Kong taxis can go to Macau. Only taxis with a special cross-border permit are allowed to cross the HZMB Bridge.

How to get a cross-border taxi

You have two main options:

From Hong Kong Port (HKBCF)

  • Use the dedicated cross-border taxi rank outside the terminal
  • This is the easiest and safest option
  • Fixed price on display: around HKD 250–350 (£26–£39) to Macau

Book via hotel or app

  • Ask your hotel to arrange a cross-border taxi
  • Apps like HKTaxi may work, but not all drivers accept cross-border trips
  • Price: around HKD 300–400 (£33–£43), depending on where you start

Journey time & cost

Journey

Approximate price

Hong Kong Port → Macau Port

HKD 250–300 (£26–£33)

HK City Centre → Macau City Centre

1 hr-1 hr 30 min

HKD 350–450 (£39–£50)

Key things to know

  • You must get out of the taxi at both immigration checkpoints with your passport
  • The driver waits for you on the other side (included in the fare)
  • Payment is usually HKD cash or card, depending on the driver
  • Look for a special permit sticker on the windscreen (red or green taxis)

📌 Trip.com tip: Taxis work well for groups of 3–4 as you can split the cost. If you’re travelling alone, the ferry is usually cheaper.

🚗 Hong Kong → Macau by private car (the most comfortable)

If you’re travelling with family, with elderly people, children or loads of luggage, a private car is the height of comfort! Door-to-door service, no need to lug your suitcases — hop in at your hotel and step out at your hotel in Macau. Simple!

Available services

Private transfers generally include:

  • Pick-up from your hotel/airport in Hong Kong;
  • Comfortable vehicle (4-seater saloon or 7-seater van);
  • Professional chauffeur with a cross-border licence;
  • Immigration assistance;
  • Drop-off at your hotel in Macau.

Your driver will whisk you across the incredible HZMB bridge, taking care of all the transport details! All you need to do is hop off with your passport at the two immigration checkpoints (for Hong Kong and Macau), and your friendly driver will be waiting for you on the other side.

📌 Who is it for? Families with children, groups of friends who want comfort, travellers with lots of luggage, older travellers, or if you simply want to avoid the stress of public transport.

🚙 Hong Kong → Macau by hire car

Renting a car to get from Hong Kong to Macau is possible, but it’s almost certainly the most complicated option! You’ll need a special licence, specific documents, and the rules are quite strict. Still, if you really want to drive yourself, here’s how:

Requirements

To drive a rental car from Hong Kong to Macau, you'll need:

  • A Chinese driving licence or a temporary Chinese driving licence
    • Your international permit is NOT enough;
    • You'll need to apply for a temporary permit (valid for 3 months to 1 year);
    • Required documents: passport, foreign driving licence, certified translation, ID photo.
  • A car with an HK-Macau cross-border permit
    • Not all hire cars are allowed to cross the border;
    • You must specifically rent a vehicle authorised for cross-border travel;
    • The car must have dual number plates (HK + Mainland).
  • Cross-border insurance
    • Special insurance covering Hong Kong and Macau;
    • Generally an extra HKD 200-300 per day.

How to get the temporary permit

You can submit your application to the local Chinese authorities with:

  • Valid passport;
  • Original foreign driving licence;
  • Certified Chinese translation of your licence;
  • Recent passport photo;

Notice period: at least 1 working day in advance.

Tips: China has mutual driving licence recognition agreements with France, Belgium, Serbia and the United Arab Emirates. If you hold a licence from one of these countries, the process is simpler.

The Trip.com Recommendation

Hiring a car just to go to Macau basically makes things more complicated… for not much gain. The formalities are cumbersome, it’s relatively pricey, and once you’re in Macau you won’t really need one (the island is small and the casino shuttles are free).

This could be interesting if:

  • You're heading out on a road trip HK → Macau → Zhuhai → other cities in Guangdong;
  • You're staying for several days and want to explore the area;
  • There are several of you to split the costs.

pros : 1. secret king room is quite big for seoul standard. the interior design is fun, red and black. motorized curtain. windows can be opened ( i need this feature , i cant stay in a room without ventilation ). 2. there is hoehyeon station subway line blue in front of the hotel, very convenient. 3. gym is a bit small but sufficient for me, i can get free unli water bottle here 4. the smell of this hotel is amazing, loving it. just thinking of it makes me miss this hotel already. 5. the staffs here are very good looking ( k beauty is truly unbeatable ). both female and male staffs. i didnt really remember their name but i remember Ms. Daisy very yeoppoyo. one day i cant remember his name, one of the staff gave me 10 bottles of water. super nice. kamsahamnida. great attention to detail, they gave us notifications like BTS concert and weather forecast. 6. on first night, the staff gave us sparkling water and chocolate, my daughter loving it. such a nice gesture. 7. toiletries Byredo are so awesome, they looked expensive. 8. housekeeping staffs are super fast and efficient. cons : 1. shower pressure for hot water is slightly low, however for cold water is quite good. but for this weather, hot water is much needed. 2. they only provide plastic water bottle in this hotel, not too eco friendly. 3. toothbrush and toothpaste are not free here, you need to pay for it 3,300won. 4. the room lighting plan a bit too dim for me, if it can be brighten up, it would be perfect chef's kiss. the control for lighting with the knobs are a bit confusing at first, but i gotten use to it after couple of times trying

The room was really tiny. Whatever you do, don't buy any package deals, like the one for Petite France – it's incredibly far, like an hour and a half to two hours away, and you can't even get a refund. It doesn't really feel like a five-star hotel; more like a four-star. You can walk to Myeongdong in about 20 minutes from the hotel by taking the underground passage straight from Dongdaemun. But I found Korea to be quite run down, with power lines everywhere. Unless you're a big K-pop fan or love concerts, a trip to Korea can be pretty disappointing. The photo is of a cafe in a shopping area near Dongdaemun. This hotel isn't far from Dongdaemun.

JW is 5 star because of excellent assistance and service from the Conceirge to bellboy! Oliver recommended and assisted us to book a nice dinner venue for my family at Seokparang. He even initiated to assist me in booking a cab. Mason helped us with the luggage. He even took initiative to ask us for our airport transfer car plate number so he can keep a lookout for us. He even initiated to ask us to sit inside the hotel lobby while he kept a lookout for us. As he understood we are rushing to catch the flight, he even helped us to translate to the cab uncle to hurry for us. All of them speak fluent English, are very warm hearted and takes initiative in offering excellent service with genuine smiles. Our hearts are deeply grateful to them. 5 star 🌟 because of them. 4 star for the rooms don’t have Netflix. It would be great if the family can gather over Netflix entertainment. Small issue though as the service more than cover up for everything! :) We were offered a nice river view which was romantic! Very clean hotel. Location is excellent as train station and direct bus airport limousine is just by the hotel. Great connectivity. Will definitely revisit this hotel again.

Dongdaemun Market Seoul|2.68km from city centre
This hotel is quite old. For a hotel that costs 4-5k a night during peak season, the view from the window is really just average, to be honest. The interior design of the rooms is also very ordinary. My mom even said it's not as good as a 400 RMB/night hotel back home [awkward laugh]. It's supposed to be a hotel with an 'old money' vibe, but apart from the slightly more luxurious lobby design, you really can't see any five-star luxury anywhere else. My stay experience gets 🌟🌟🌟, and the interior design only gets 🌟🌟🌟🌟. However, it's right next to Shilla Duty Free, just a two or three-minute walk away. So, it's convenient for those 'suckers' who want to shop at the duty-free store.

Whenever I visit Seoul, I always stay here. The hotel has a direct indoor walkway to Yongsan Station, so you don't have to worry about getting wet on rainy days. It's also incredibly convenient for getting to Myeongdong, Yeouido, and Itaewon. I stayed in a high-floor room with views of Namsan Tower and the Han River. The room was clean and tidy, the bedding was comfortable, and the separate wet and dry areas in the bathroom were a huge plus. The front desk staff communicated smoothly, were polite and efficient. If you arrive early, they can hold your room for you, and you can store your luggage and head out to explore!

Each room comes with a KRW 50,000 gift card: I forgot how to use this one. Located in Myeongdong, it's an older five-star hotel. Because it's an older five-star, the building is a bit low-rise and not very prominent in Myeongdong (as a person bad with directions, I had to use navigation every time to get back to the hotel). The Airport Limousine Bus 6701 goes directly there, which is super convenient! Across from the hotel: There's a 7-Eleven and GS25 if you use the underground passage. Next door, there's an emart24. Facilities: Well-equipped. Cleanliness: Good. Ambiance: Stylish, but the corridor outside the room had a slightly unpleasant smell. It's very close to Lotte Department Store, and Shinsegae Department Store isn't far either; Shinsegae is a bit better for shopping. Service: Polite and enthusiastic. The room key card is made of wood and is quite beautiful.

I booked a deluxe king room with executive benefits. This hotel no longer offers complimentary shuttle service. Since my booking included executive benefits, I received complimentary afternoon tea and a dinner set menu. If you want to upgrade to a buffet dinner, it's an extra 100 RMB per person, which is still worth it. The room itself was standard, but a decent size. Compared to the 'pigeonhole' hotels I've stayed in before in Hong Kong, this room was much more spacious. The decor is a bit dated, but the French-style design still looks good. The gym is located next to the pool on the first floor and is also a good size. Zhuhai is right across the river, offering pleasant views. From the hotel, you can take a direct bus to Gongbei Port. It's about a 20-minute walk to Grand Lisboa. The hotel breakfast is very plentiful with a wide variety of options, and the service is excellent, including dedicated Chinese-speaking staff. There's a designated smoking area outside the first-floor restaurant, next to the pool. With welcome fruit and capsule coffee, the overall quality and ambiance are quite good.

The hotel is located near Fisherman's Wharf, right opposite Sands Macao. If you're like me and prefer to stay on the Macau Peninsula side, this location is quite convenient. It's about two or three stops from the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, and very close to the sea, making for a pleasant stroll after dinner with a nice sea breeze. The hotel's overall design is European classical, with a touch of vintage palace-like decor. The high ceilings make the rooms feel more grand and spacious. Although you can tell the hotel has been open for some years, and the facilities aren't brand new, they are well-maintained with no obvious signs of age. The room size was a pleasant surprise this time; it's quite spacious for Macau, with plenty of room between the two beds and ample space to open suitcases. The bathroom features a separate wet and dry area, and overall cleanliness was good. The window area gets a lot of natural light, making for a comfortable stay. When the room was cleaned on the second day, the staff even folded the clothes I'd left out and neatly placed them on the bed, a thoughtful detail. The check-out process was smooth, with a convenient express check-out option. The luggage storage service was also very helpful for tourists who want to explore Macau further before leaving. Overall, while the hotel's facilities aren't the newest, it excels in spacious rooms, a convenient location, and attentive service, while also offering views of both the Macau Peninsula and the sea. Given that hotels in Macau are generally not inexpensive, I believe the overall value for money here is quite good.

Facilities: Although it's an older hotel, the facilities are quite good after renovation. The lobby has a classic, old-money feel, and there are luxury and art shops. The pool, fitness center, and sauna are all very well-equipped. The attached Thai restaurant serves authentic food and was once Michelin-recommended. It's rare to find a TV with Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and Portuguese channels. Hygiene: It's clean, and they even provide wet wipes at breakfast. Environment: It's a rare Portuguese-style garden hotel in Macau. Service: The staff are all very friendly. There are concierges at both the front and back doors, and they even guide guests to the elevators during peak hours. The cleaning staff proactively greet you and are very responsive to any requests. I brought some gifts for my friends in Macau and bought some Japanese snacks and dried food for myself to take home. My friend wanted to treat me to dinner as a thank you for making the trip to Macau, even though it was an unexpected detour for me. He only had time in the evening after work. We usually eat quite late, so I had to stay in Macau for a day. Catching up with friends every two or three months is no problem, especially since I'm retired and have plenty of time. I always stay at this hotel. There aren't any major issues. I'm familiar with their procedures and practices. Plus, it's conveniently located on a main road with many bus stops, making it easy to get to and from the city center. Of course, when booking, you need to check the availability of rooms at competing hotels nearby. **Environment:** Good. I used their pool, and there were Caucasians, Koreans, and Japanese guests.

Holiday Inn Macau is super convenient to get to. The hotel itself is great – very clean and tidy, and the rooms are spacious. The staff are incredibly helpful; I forgot my phone charger, and they immediately sent someone up with one. Breakfast was good too, and it's excellent value for money. When I checked out, the doorman even helped me call a taxi. Five stars!

Every time we renew our child's passport, we stay here. It's super convenient for getting things done, there are lots of food options nearby, and it's easy to get to the border crossing. Plus, the hotel offers shuttle service. Oh, and the egg tarts in the lobby are absolutely delicious!

Regal Hotel is my first choice every time I visit Macau. The hotel is located on the Macau Peninsula, with an excellent location; it's just a ten-minute walk to attractions like the Ruins of St. Paul's. The staff are all very polite and accommodating. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with good soundproofing, and the bathrooms are spacious. The front desk staff are warm and patient, and they helped me find a suitable room based on my needs. Thumbs up.

The location is absolutely fantastic! It's a spacious suite, a shopping paradise, and you can enjoy an ultimate vacation without even leaving the building. At night, you get to soak in the sparkling city views, and with all the dining and entertainment options, the experience is truly extraordinary!

Traveling with a friend after the May Day holiday, I booked two rooms – one with twin beds and one with a king bed. There was a connecting door between them. I called the front desk and asked them to open it, instantly turning them into a convenient suite for interacting, yet we could close the door for privacy when resting. The hotel is surprisingly quiet despite being in a bustling area. The rooms are clean, and the beds are very comfortable. I booked without breakfast, opting instead to explore the streets and alleys for a unique Portuguese-style breakfast, which was a wonderful experience. Upon returning to Gongbei Port, I booked a shuttle at the lobby for a specific time. The 8-seater car was very comfortable, much better than taking a random taxi to the port. The driver's service was excellent, a definite commendation!

I stayed here about eight years ago, shortly after the Grand Lisboa Palace first opened. It was incredibly grand, like a palace or a castle, and cost one to two thousand [yuan/patacas] a night back then. Now, the casino is closed, and it's a bit more desolate, but the hotel's infrastructure, service, and luxury standards remain. In fact, because the casino is closed, it's now much cheaper, offering incredibly high value for money. Honestly, I can't find any fault with it except for the slightly remote location. To stay in a super five-star hotel for just a few hundred [yuan/patacas] – you won't find that anywhere else but Macau!

It was our anniversary and Gary at reception offered us a lte check out since we arrived at the hotel quite late. We were also upgraded together with a free red wine as our gift and we were thrilled and we were further offered 2 complimentary breakfast althought we didn't use att the end. I found out that I didn't take my airpods with me at the time when I checked out and we went to lunch. I came back and then 2 receptionists helped me out and called the room to bring it back down even after checkout, I m so pleased by the services Ascott provided me and to us. Thank you very much and I will for sure come again. Btw the room we stayed was really nice spacious and comfortable.

This hotel was soooo much nicer than we expected! For starters, you have plenty of cheap restaurants within a 3-minute-walk radius. The rooms are unbelievably big and clean and with all the amenities you need. The housekeeping seems to be working 24h because we needed some water at 11pm and they came immediately to deliver it. The hotel also has a small gym and a pool on the 4th floor, as well as 3 restaurants and a ****** - I meant it when I said this hotel is much nicer than we expected! Unfortunately we only had 2 nights there so couldn’t enjoy it fully but those 2 days were plenty of time to see Macau. Would definitely recommend using a bit higher budget but going with this rich-feeling hotel 😅

Attended a conference at the university next door. It's a very quiet hotel, and public transport and taxis nearby are all convenient. The building itself is quite old, but the cleanliness is excellent. The only downside was the pillows – they were small and soft, not very comfortable. The staff were friendly. I stayed in a sea-view room, and the view of Macau Island was beautiful.

I've always wanted to stay at the Galaxy Macau, but unfortunately, there was a thunderstorm warning on the day we checked in, so we couldn't enjoy the water activities. It was a bit disappointing. However, staying at Galaxy is incredibly convenient; there are plenty of dining, entertainment, and shopping options available. Plus, if you show your Air Macau boarding pass, you can get many discounts and free gifts. It's also super easy to get to the Venetian, Big Ben, and Parisian from here. After a good night's sleep, we could even pop over to Rua do Cunha the next day, which is very close by. What I'll remember most is how incredibly comfortable the beds are at the Galaxy hotel. The room was beautiful and clean, and the service was absolutely fantastic. Truly five-star service! Since we were traveling with kids, they even gave us complimentary 'Toto' slippers, a 'Toto' tent, and a 'Toto' doll for them. My kids were thrilled and said Galaxy was the most fun! ^_^ Haha. I will definitely stay at Galaxy again next time I visit Macau. What I personally loved most was being able to choose my own pillow. This time, I picked the lavender sleep pillow and even received a free pillow mist. All complimentary, truly excellent value for money.

Big shout-out to Mandarin Oriental Macau! This was my third trip to Macau, and this time I stayed in the old town. The Mandarin Oriental immediately caught my eye. Transportation is super convenient. From the airport, we took the MGM Macau shuttle, and since the two hotels are connected, it was an easy walk to the hotel after getting off. When we went to Hong Kong, we had a private car pick us up from the Mandarin Oriental and take us directly to our Hong Kong hotel. If you're going to the airport, I'd also recommend booking a private car, as the MGM airport shuttle always has long queues. The location is excellent, very quiet, and surrounded by plenty of dining, entertainment, and shopping options. The hotel service was fantastic. During check-in, they specifically gave me a room with an amazing view, where I could see the Macau Tower from every angle. The bathroom faced directly towards the Grand Lisboa, so you could take stunning photos right from your room without even leaving the hotel. Regarding the room: The room was huge! Compared to the cramped spaces in Hong Kong, Macau's rooms are so big you could play hide-and-seek. The children's toiletries weren't provided promptly; we only received the bathrobes and disposable slippers on our last day at checkout. The slippers were adorable little bear shapes, very cute, and you could take them with you – good quality too. Regarding breakfast: The variety was extensive. I recommend going early; after 9 AM, it gets very crowded, and they'll arrange for you to dine in the lounge, which makes it less convenient to get your food. Regarding family activities: I suggest bringing swimsuits; Macau is still quite warm in February, so you can enjoy the infinity pool. The SPA's soap-making workshop was also very interesting. Preschoolers can easily complete it, the process was very enjoyable, and the finished product was quite therapeutic. While there are countless hotels in Macau and it's unlikely I'll stay here again as I want to try new experiences, the beautiful memories the Mandarin Oriental gave us will always remain in my heart.

Beautiful hotel and great amenities. Rooms are spacious with a wonderful view of the garden or ocean. Although we are a couple sans children, the hotel is very family friendly with two pools (one indoor, one outdoor). Outdoor pool had an area for children with a zip line and balance obstacles. Children’s club with indoor bounce house, board games, table tennis table, pool table, foosball table and outdoor jungle gym. Changing room has a steam room, sauna and showers. Easy to order food and drinks pool side via QR code however service can be a little slow therefore expect to wait a little bit for what you ordered to be delivered. Breakfast buffet had a lot of options and price is very affordable, with a discounted price for children. Highly recommend staying here and we will stay here again in the future.

📋 Practical information you absolutely must know

Immigration and documents

  • Passport required (identity card not accepted);
  • Visa: Most Western nationalities do NOT need one for a tourist stay in Macau (30–90 days depending on the country);
  • You'll go through immigration twice: exit HK + entry Macau;
  • Make sure you fill in the arrival/departure card properly before joining the queue (it’s quicker).

The local currency

Macau has its own currency: the Pataca (MOP). Even so, Hong Kong dollars (HKD) are accepted EVERYWHERE in Macau at a 1:1 rate!

💰 Trip.com tip: keep hold of your HKD — no need to exchange! You can pay for everything in Macau with them, no worries. However, if you’re given change in patacas, you won’t be able to use them in Hong Kong (exchange them before you head back).

Phone and Wi‑Fi

Your Hong Kong package won't work in Macau (it's an international border, so do bear that in mind!). Here are your options:

  • Local SIM card in Macau (airport or 7-Eleven, ~50 MOP)
  • eSIM (super handy, buy in advance via Airalo)
  • International roaming (expensive)
  • Free Wi-Fi in casinos/hotels (more than enough)

Trip.com tip: free casino shuttle buses

All the major casinos run free shuttle buses from the ferry terminals and Macau Port. As you come out of immigration, you’ll see plenty of signs with the logos:

  • Venetian Macau
  • Galaxy Macau
  • City of Dreams
  • Wynn Palace
  • MGM Cotai
  • Studio City
  • Etc.

You don't even need to stay at these hotels or gamble in the casino! Hop on the local shuttle to wherever you want to go — it's completely free. It's your free metro in Macau!

Macau awaits with its giant casinos, magnificent Portuguese heritage, pastéis de nata to die for, and a unique atmosphere! Whether you’re setting off to try your luck at the roulette table, visiting the Ruins of St. Paul’s or simply savouring incredible Sino-Portuguese fusion dishes, the journey from Hong Kong is really straightforward.

Book your ferries and hotels now on Trip.com for the best deals!

Have a great trip to Macau! ✨
