Beautiful area, just on the river. Great location, a 2 minutes walk from the center. I arrived early and they allowed me to store my luggage until I arrived much later. The receptionist was kind and other staff friendly. Rooms were clean and had everything I needed. Recommended.

Firstly, it has to be said this ‘Guest Accommodation’ is in an excellent location. Though you do need to be on Google maps to find the tiny entrance hidden next to a mobile phone repair shop. Minutes walk from the Shambles, the Minster, excellent selection of dining venues to suit all budgets. Betty’s if you can ever get in! What isn’t so fabulous is the actual accommodation. I paid nearly £200 for one night for myself and my daughter as a treat after a particularly difficult year during which we lost her father, my ex husband and my fiancé within 3 months of each other. The room was dingy, not terribly clean and the beds looked ‘thrown together’ with the bedding and very uncomfortable. The pillows were, well, I’ve thrown away better, less lumpy items. The carpet was stained and there was an unexpected and unannounced difference in level between the bedroom and bathroom floor levels. According to the cardboard key holder you are given you used to be able to choose a breakfast to be delivered to your room, sadly no more but that’s ok. Starbucks is 20 paces away. Considering they state they are guest accommodation in their defence of reviews their prices are definitely ’hotel’ and they always ask where it states 5*? Well, at the top of the page! The bathroom window could not be closed and at 5am when it poured down the gap in the guttering above the wheelie bin under the bathroom window beat a tattoo which woke us both. The woman on reception last night was the least helpful woman ever, admittedly probably due to the weather the tv lost signal so I called reception for help and advice. I was told I “need to rescan the tv”. OK, how? Where do I find the instructions for the tv or have you got them? Her response? “We don’t know the details of each tv in each room, it will be somewhere in the menu”. OK, WHERE in the menu? Response there came none. When asked if they thought it might be a good idea if they had copied the troubleshooting part of the manual if it was too much to leave the instructions in the room there was a sigh. I mean. It’s only telly. But. I’m paying top money for ‘guest accommodation’. And yes. When we checked out I said it was ok. I know. But having tried to communicate with reception last night I had no faith in any response.

My family and I called into this amazing establishment initially fir a drink after arriving via train from Sheffield. The lodgings are a fantastic venue for socialising and meeting up with friends After having a drink we booked for an evening meal as the food looked amazing. Not to be let down we each had roast chicken with all the trimmings associated with a typical Sunday roast. A delightful experience and will return in the future.

The room is smaller than the York Hotel. The room is in a relatively modern style, but I don't like it very much. The overall tone is darker and a bit depressing. The hotel breakfast is also average, there are few choices, sausages or other meats are very salty, maybe salt is not expensive 🙃

The Fort is in the best location for seeing the whole of York. It was clean, welcoming, had fab little touches in the room. Rooms were spacious and well laid out. No air conditioning but as one day was particularly hot, when we returned a large fan had been placed in the room. No brewing up facilities in the room but a fabulous kitchenette on the 1st floor with kettle microwave mini fridge with various types of milk in and a large variety of hot drinks to make. The staff at Kennedys bar next door could not have been more helpful or friendly. The only downside was one of our rooms was at the front over where Manahatta nightclub next door was so the noise was loud until early hours. We had already realised this when we booked though and the Fort provided free earplugs in each room and a bowl of them in the kitchenette which we thought was going above and beyond.

My 11 year old son and I stayed at The Grand in York for two nights for sightseeing. There is an NCP car park on the same street, which gets patrons 10% discount and it secure. It’s about 12 minutes walk to York Minster Cathedral and about the same to Jorvik Viking Centre-utterly perfect location! The hotel is beautiful and staff are professional, but friendly and we’re super attentive to my overly keen and chatty son!❤️☺️ The pool is lovely and has a jacuzzi, steam room and sauna with trea**ent rooms. We also stumbled across The Cookery School, so we booked a Parent/Child 3 hour cookery lesson for £65 and made and ate Ravioli and Raspberry Semi-fresco-a new experience, but we are both sold and already looking to return! So much to see in beautiful York and this is the perfect location to do it from ❤️☺️

2519 Great value for money Review of Astor York Pending review I was heading to York for the Christmas market and, knowing that I would spend most of my time out and about, wanted my accommodation to be as inexpensive as possible. A weekend at the Astor York set me back less than £40, and I would say I'm grateful I stayed here for more reasons than just the low price. I hadn't realised that the Christmas market closes quite early, and I found myself back at the hostel earlier than I anticipated. Luckily, there is a common area where you can watch Netflix with the other guests – a nice treat at the end of a cold day. I was admittedly a bit taken aback by the very old-fashioned bathrooms that look straight out of the 1960s. But the hostel was clean and well-maintained. My 30-bed dorm did not feel too crowded, and I was grateful for the cages under beds. My one gripe about the dorm room would be a lack of sockets and lights at beds; it was impossible to charge my phone as I was on the top bunk, so I had to charge it in the common area instead. While I only needed to use the fridge, it looked like the kitchen was well-stocked and spacious. There was also a little bar that did happy hour, though I never made it back early enough to take advantage. The location is a bit of a walk from York's city centre. However, it's quite an easy route, and it's also convenient for accessing the train station. I recommend getting up and out a bit earlier and walking along the ancient wall from Micklegate, which is not far from the hostel. Overall, my stay was great value for money and I'd recommend Astor York to any solo travellers.

In May 2022, I spent 3 days in York as a treat for my birthday. This trip was one of many solo-travels that I had planned for the year and when planning this trip and looking on Booking.com I found this hotel to be the best of the bunch on money and closeness to the town. The hotel itself was part of a pub/restaurant but my room was separate from the building in a sense as it was outside and up the stairs. The pub was incredible, the atmosphere and theme was just what I was looking for and I absolutely loved the history behind the building. The room, just as expected, fit well with the theme with vintage inspired decor and furniture, a beautiful and home-away-from-home feel to it. The room was clean, comfortable and just what I wanted for my first trip to York and only second trip travelling solo. The hotel was only a few minutes walk to the town centre and The Shambles, which was just what I wanted and it was so great that during a busy day that I could nip back to my room to drop off bags and/or freshen up before heading back out. It really is a brilliant location for anyone visiting York. The food, which I only had on one occasion as there was so much choice in York, was incredible and highly recommend even if you aren't staying, to pop in for dinner. You will not be disappointed at all! All around fantastic hotel, with a great location, food, price and friendly and helpful staff. Cannot wait to stay again, thank you

The Parsonage Hotel & Spa

We stayed at the Parsonage for a couple of nights in September. We were so glad we chose this hotel as we had a fabulous stay. We were lucky enough to get a good deal from Hotels.com We had a lovely room that felt as if it was separate from the hotel, a couple of things needed updating but it did not affect our stay, the room was clean and comfy, the shower was powerful. If we needed anything we went reception and were accommodated straight away. The breakfast was lovely, plenty of it, food was replenished quickly and it was nice to see that food was taken away if it had been standing for a while. my husband is a vegetarian and the chef looked after him. The waiting on staff were challenged this day as i heard people asking for gluten free toast, decaf drinks , along with our own requests, but nothing was too much trouble. I would just like to say that there were a couple of staff members who stood out and went the extra mile to make sure everyone was happy, firstly the young lady on reception who had been in position a week , she also did some waitressing at breakfast, her personality shone through and we generally thought she wanted to do her best to help everyone enjoy their stay. There was also a chap cleaning the spa area who again went out of his way and seemed to have good judgement if people wanted a conversation or just a polite smile. All other staff members were very professional and we could not fault any of them. I read previously about other peoples bad experiences and i am not naive to realise that peoples experiences are different and that there are many members of staff, so i can only judge what we experienced. We loved the spa area , like other reviews have said , you need to take a £1 for the locker which you get back, also take a towel otherwise they are chargeable. There is a pub on site, we only had a look around so didn’t visit it but it looked lovely. We travelled to York by car which was a very easy route, but there is also a bus service near the hotel that i believe is very efficient and has a late night service too. There is a outlet mall not too far away thats worth a visit.

A fantastic hotel. Check in was easy with friendly staff. Our room was very clean, modern and comfortable. Rooms come with and iron and ironing board and a hairdryer. Plus in the bathroom there’s toiletries. This was an ideal location it was close to everything. Within 5 minutes or less we were at the shambles. The shambles car park is a short walk away and you get 20% discount if staying at the hotel. Breakfast at the hotel was delicious with a wide variety of choice, there’s even a waffle maker with a good choice of toppings. We opted to go for breakfast around 7 am as we are early birds plus we like to beat the queues/ rush. We did see how busy it can get later on so I would recommend earlier the better. We will definitely be staying here again hopefully can get an adjoining room as our kids will be coming with us.

Myself, my son (11 years) and our puppy Hugo and my parents had the privilege of staying in this hotel for 2 nights whilst we had a 2 day city break in York. The staff are extremely welcoming, so friendly, happy to help and fun. The reception area is awesome with so many games and books to read we never had a dull moment. The staff were so good with Hugo, which was a bonus that we could bring our puppy and feel so welcome we would love to come back and stay. The beds are so comfy, massive flat screen tv in rooms, lovely showers and really cool deign in rooms we loved it. The staff really went out of there way too help in anyway they would and gave us a really friendly Advice in where to go too to eat and see th sights of York. Our room was cleaned beautifully and we enjoyed sitting out in the courtyard for our complimentary drinks on our last night. Wonderful ! What more can you ask for :) thanks everyone you made it very special for us all :)

We booked this hotel for a 3 day get away to York. The hotel is well situated off Tadcaster Road, near a woodland path which leads to York racecourse, so is very popular for those who go to the horse racing. Free parking is given on the hotel’s ground, but be warned make sure you go to reception and put in your car registration details in their computerised system otherwise you will be issued with a parking fine from the company who operates CCTV monitoring for the hotel. We booked the hotel through the IHG website, as an IHG Gold member we were given an option of an early checkin for a fee of £20.00 and an upgrade of £45.00. We took advantage of both offers, subject to availability on arrival. Unfortunately this wasn’t possible on arrival, and we weren’t able to check in until nearly 3pm. We were given the upgrade of a room on the top floor. The room had a small fridge with complimentary water and a chocolate bar, slippers, and dressing gowns. The toiletries, conditioner, shampoo, body lotion, are all in fixed to the wall containers. The bath room had a large walk in shower which was quite powerful, but space to hang towels, put personal toiletries was very minimal, and I was thankful that I took a plastic shoe type hold-all and a suction hook which I attached to the shower door to put our toiletries in, otherwise they would have cluttered the sink area. The bathroom was very small, and the door needs to be closed to get any room to do what is necessary in the bathroom. We booked a deal of dinner bed and breakfast. This was a disaster. We went for dinner and just about everything on the menu wasn’t available. Eventually we ordered a burger and chips. After about 30 minutes the food arrived. It was the worse burger and chips I have ever tasted. The burger was burnt on the outside, raw in the middle, the bun was burnt, the chips were very brown, which tasted of fat. We picked at the food as we were so hungry but it wasn’t nice, and hardly edible, in fact what I ate made me feel quite sick afterwards. We complained to reception, who apologised, and said that chefs in York were really hard to employ, and offered to refund the dinner to our account. We said that if this was the case, we would rather not eat dinner in the hotel, and could they please refund the dinner portion from our account for the rest of the stay. We had breakfast for the next 3 mornings, but it wasn’t marvellous, often dishes weren’t refilled when emptied. Some staff didn’t seem to know what they were doing, and others didn’t seem to be that bothered, or concerned, about the guests in the hotel, possibly some more customer service training could be beneficial all round. For the remainder of the stay we ate our evening meal in the pub across the road, which was really good. We felt that the standard of the hotel has deteriorated since we were there a couple of years ago. Would we go back? Possibly not, unless standards improved, and the hotel gets a m

We booked The Hotel du Vin because it was dog friendly and could provide a room with a bath. I have visited the Hotel du Vin in Birmingham many times and was hopeful the York Hotel du Vin would be good. When we arrived there was a dog bed and two bowls in our room. We had brought Lily's cage but it was not needed. There were several bins outside for poo bag disposal. When they said they were dog friendly they meant it. The hotel is situated a short walk from York centre. The bed was comfortable. The food was good. Staff were helpful and the hotel was well presented. I would return if I ever needed a hotel in York with Lily in tow.

From the minute I arrived the staff were extremely polite, professional and showed a genuine desire to help. The bedrooms are of a very high standard with everything you could possibly need. The bed was extremely comfortable (to the stage that I struggled to get up the following morning). The food in the restaurant was exceptional. It is rare to find a hotel that can balance between excellent service in a relaxed yet informal setting. If you are travelling on business or pleasure the York Pavilion hotel is a must. Nice little Inn in a pleasant village. On arrival, we found the room to be very clean, but very cold. We had not phoned ahead to advise of arrival time, so this was not unexpected. We soon got the room to temperature with the adequate radiator. There was a good size TV and working remote control. It was nice to have a mirror, often lacking in hotel rooms. However, the bathroom was very cold (in tune with the weather) and although there was a towel radiator, there was no facility to switch it on, so the night visits to the loo and morning showers were fairly grim experiences for a February morning. Breakfast was the most disappointing part of the say. Firstly, there no cereals options. When asked, they said they could find something, but it was an offer of just two uninviting choices. There were no fruit items or yoghurts either, Thankfully I had brought my morning grapefruit with me on the trip, but my wife had nothing. There was no choice of fruit juice, just a half of a small glass of orange juice (already poured), that tasted cheap and oversweet. The cooked breakfast was minimal and the mushrooms were well past their ”eat by date” being dried up, wrinkled and too leathery to consume. When they get to that stage it is best to throw them away and offer an alternative. The negatives override the positives, so we will probably not return.

Awful stay, sleep deprived because we had a faulty fire alarm screaming alarms into our ears and the last night and following day were completely ruined for us negating the whole point of a short two day city break. Fire alarm was faulty and repeatedly went off during the night, screeching into your ears starting at 10 pm, if that doesn’t sound like fun to you, avoid, especially as the issue wasn’t fixed when we left. Alarm issues started on Sunday morning but didn't seem to be passed onto staff on Sunday evening and were not dealt with or forwarded. Fire alarm went off on Sunday night at 10pm which should have registered a major issue but rather than deal with it, roomzzz just left it. I rang the member of staff on duty and told him it needed silencing due to him saying it was a faulty sensor and i informed him it had gone off before that day of which he was not aware. He simply wasn't trained to do it or trained in escalation and simply left it, having already disturbed everyone at 10pm on a Sunday night which is ultimately managements fault for not making sure staff understood what to do in emergency situations. Faulty alarm then predictably woke everybody up at 2am which i told the member of staff the first time we didn’t want to be woken up again, then at half 2 and then it went off again a few times when the staff member finally decided to get the manager out of bed, which should have happened when the issue first appeared on Sunday morning or at the very least sorted at 10pm when it went off at 10pm Sunday evening. To top it off it went off again Monday morning at 11am. The Manager was nice but full of the usual excuses which i just were not buying, she said it could have been handled better but it was handled at all, it was amateur at roomzzz York. Its likely still faulty as i type this due to the alarm company clearly not being called out. She said there was not a lot that could be done because it’s the fire alarm which is just…a lie, the zone or faulty sensor should have been isolated on the system. Again lack of knowledge on what to do from management. To top it off we had someone hammering away on Monday morning at 11 am, clearly nobody communicates who is in what rooms. Other than that the stay was standard though not to the quality we had when we visited the Chester roomzzz aparthotel. TV was faulty when we booked in which was a minor inconvenience but nothing compared to having screeching faulty fire alarms shocking you out of bed. Awful experience and we rushed home due to been knackered because my partner couldn’t get back to sleep, rather than enjoying the day out in York.

We come every year between Xmas and new year for a short break and this year, even as we stepped through the front doors noticed a difference. Guests now have to pay to park at the hotel (£7.99 a night), the coffees at breakfast is no longer brought to the table, and no freshly made omelettes anymore! Rooms are not maintained each day by housekeeping, so after two nights we had to approach reception to ask them to empty our bins and replenish teas/coffees in the room. Front desk staff were friendly though staff at the leisure centre less so- quite abrupt in their manner! While we love it here for convenience we might look at alternative hotels in York next year!

This is a lovely place to stay and highly recommended it. The apartment was large and spacious with good cooking facilities and a lovely dining area. The bathroom is large and modern, and the water pressure for the shower is fantastic. Plenty of towels are available. The bedrooms are large with a good amount of wardrobe and drawer space. There are plenty of mirrors in the apartment which, when there are a few of you getting ready, is definitely a plus! The pub itself is lovely and traditional. There are some lovely original features which Dan told us about which were really interesting. He has very extensive knowledge of the building and its history and is really worth having a listen to him. The location is excellent. It is a 5-10 minute walk from the city centre and just a 2 minute walk from the river. There is parking available on site for no extra cost which is extremely handy for a City like York. Breakfast is available for an extra cost and it is excellent. Evening meals are also available (most evenings) and I highly recommend that you eat here at least one night because the food is excellent. It is well cooked, well presented and the choice is fantastic. There is plenty of food served for both breakfast and evening meals and are all available at a reasonable price. My compliments to the chefs. Finally, all other staff at the pub were very attentive and very friendly. All in all, great location, great value, great amenities, great food, great host and great staff. Absolutely recommend for your stay in York

None of the best hotels in the 5 cities of the UK. The style of the hotel is superb, the owner is two white-haired old people, kind and friendly, especially for the guests. The food recommended for us during the two days staying here is great! We drove in the yard, the weather was cold in the morning when the car was frozen in front of the car, after starting the car, the front window is ice, nothing can be seen, waited a few minutes and only opened a little. It’s time to wait for this to go wrong, and suddenly the old man is holding a pot of hot water on the glass, and the glass is completely transparent. The heart at the time was unusually warm. There is also a trip to Manchester Airport. The weather is snowing. The old man specifically watched the weather. He specially reminded us to set off one hour in advance. It was too late for us to advance one hour earlier, otherwise it would be blocked in the traffic of Manchester in the morning. The summer vacation plan will come again, you must still live here.

Stayed for 1 night for a gig at the Barbican. Stayed in room 7, a twin. Check in was easy and quick. The room was clean and warm, and the bed was comfy. This is a no frills, functional and well kept place within walking distance of the city centre. I would definitely consider returning next time I come to York.

With free parking, the old city attractions are within walking distance, very good. Breakfast is available for purchase. There is a self-service kitchen available, with few clean people and plenty of space. The open space on the first floor is also large and comfortable. Room is 6 beds, normal buddy style.

We stayed for 3 nights in room 1 which is a double with what looked like a brand new ensuite. The room/ensuite were spotlessly clean when we arrived and fresh towels and room cleaning were offered daily although we didn't take up the offer. The bed/mattress were really comfortable and there was ample storage and hanging space. The shower was hot every time we used it with good water pressure, which I mention because I have seen previous posts that mention no hot water. The Victoria is under fairly new management and they and the bar staff were very friendly and helpful. We had the cooked breakfast each morning and it was spot on and good value for money. The rooms are above a pub so you should expect some general noise when the pub is open but the noise wasn't intrusive or a problem for us and the pub has a fantastic selection of gin which was a real bonus for me. All in all a great value for money central location with the added bonus of a car park.

Highly recommended. Staff were first class. Lovely room overlooking the lawns. Bathroom was a bit on the small side. As noted elsewhere it was difficult to get to the shower taps due to fixed shower screen so got a blast of cold water until find correct temp. but minor issue. Extremely comfortable bed and nice linen. Whole experience was terrific and we have already booked again.

We booked here to celebrate being together five years & loved it. Staff are brilliant, such a friendly kind bunch. The food is so tasty, though the burger was slightly disappointing but everything else including breakfast was so fresh & tasty. Our junior suite was beautiful, so tranquil, so spacious & perfect for our stay. Carparking isn't ideal but other than that was excellent value for money. Thank you to all your team & we will be back, even if just for the Scotch Egg!!!! Lovely stay.

We have just returned after a 2 night stay. As some of the first guests to use this site we were impressed with the set up. We had electric hook up. There was spotless toilets and showers in the main stable blocks . Loads of hot water and pot washing facilities outside. There was a communal room where large screen TVs and breakfast was available to purchase in the mornings. Everything from fresh fruit , cereal , or the full English. We were well looked after by the team there and nothing seemed a problem for them. Very warm and welcoming. Plenty of refuse bins available and a warden who made regular walk rounds. It’s about a 5 min taxi ride to the centre of York but just outside the gate there is a Chinese takeaway, fish and chip shop and two decent pubs. A local shop is a couple of hundred yards down the road. They also have rooms to rent which seemed very reasonably priced and again spotlessly clean. We stayed with family in 3 tents and we all agree we would not hesitate to go back. Well worth a visit if your exploring York and the surrounding area. Thank you for a great weekend . I'm giving a '5' rating because I think the owner and staff do as well as they can with this place, but there are some issues that I don't see any of the other reviews mention (or at least as far as I read), so I want to highlight those as well. The positives: Location is great for walking into the main area of York even if it is just a bit on the outskirts. Breakfast was fine and plentiful, though I have no idea what a good 'full English breakfast' is from a bad one. The sausage definitely didn't taste like American sausage, but I assume it isn't supposed to. But there are other breakfast options as well. The dining area is very nice. The owner (or whom I assume is the owner) is just as pleasant and helpful as can be. She helped us navigate our way around town and highlighted the places to visit. The not-as-positives: We had trouble finding the 'shortcut' to walk it from the train station. You'll probably want to use your phone for directions, but if they provided a map rather than text directions, it would be helpful Being a house, there are no elevators. We were pleasantly offered help with our luggage, but be warned that it does have to be carried up steps if you are in a room on other than the ground floor. As for our room itself, it was small, and wasn't easy to navigate around in with two suitcases. The bathroom shower would not fit a large person. Fortunately, we are both on the slimmer side, but it was even tight for us. The noise from traffic was very apparent, as was noise from other guests. We literally heard another guest snoring in an adjoining room. So essentially, the place isn't 'perfect', but I think it's a good value and deserves to be considered. We're likely to never find ourselves in York again since we don't travel that often (but it's well worth a visit), and frankly, if we did, we'd probably research other accommodations as well, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from using Apple House.

My partner and I have just returned from a 2 night stay in a deluxe double room at this frankly superb b&b. Only a 6min walk to the Minster (or an 8 minute walk through the beautiful museum gardens) and with several lovely pubs within short walking distance. The staff here are friendly, the rooms immaculate, the beds unbelievably comfy and the breakfast simply wonderful. We will definitely be back very soon and have already recommended it to family.
