To borrow a parlance from the airline industry, Taj Bekal’s hard product is sublime, and it’s the prime reason this stay earns a 5/5. The soft product is good, but has scope to become even better. The property itself is magical. On one end lies the Kappil river meandering into the sea, and on the other, a serene private beach. Every corner is designed to impress—whether it’s the tranquil space around Backwater Café or the stunning swimming pool where the horizon merges the river, sea, and glowing waters of the pool. Cycling and walking tracks let you enjoy your own backwater experience without leaving the grounds, and activities like kayaking and moonlit raft rides add a sense of adventure. The arrival experience sets the stage beautifully. The lobby, adorned with houseboat motifs and overlooking a koi pond, is magnificent. I was upgraded to a plunge pool villa, and the attention to detail left me floored. My favourite feature was the swing bed—lying on it at night with the soundscape of crickets and flowing water was the perfect natural white noise. The villa was spacious and tastefully appointed, while the outdoor pool and candlelit wall were magical after dark. The property is full of these little touches that elevate the stay, from the cycling paths to the interplay of river and sea. It is also pet- and baby-friendly, with a play area and nanny services available, which makes it an easy recommendation for families. There are, however, a few areas that can be polished further. The buffet doesn’t showcase local cuisine as strongly as it could, and on crowded mornings, service efficiency dips. While staff are polite and helpful, the personal touches that set luxury hotels apart felt a little missing. Finally, valet services need closer oversight—I had my rental car returned with scratches, which wasn’t resolved satisfactorily. Final Thoughts: Would I recommend Taj Bekal? Without hesitation. The physical product—the natural setting, the villas, the sheer beauty of the grounds—is extraordinary and reason enough to plan a visit. The few service gaps are worth noting but do little to diminish what is otherwise an exceptional experience.
