Winter Story at Shimogoten. A relaxing and rejuvenating trip at one of the Top Three Hot Springs with Beauty Benefits.
It is located in the countryside of Tanabe but the transportation is relatively convenient. This hotel is a member of the Secret Hot Spring Guardian Association, and the water quality of the hot spring is very good. The waiters were all local elderly people, and my lovely mother-in-law came to talk to me with a translator during dinner. The food is not luxurious, but it is still quite traditional and authentic Japanese home-cooked food.

It was a retro inn, located a little way from the Motoyu hot springs of Ryujin Onsen, and it didn't even have an elevator. 🤗 Even though I couldn't stay alone at Kamigoten or other places, they warmly welcomed me as a solo traveler. 😌💓 The hostess is originally from Sajima, Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture, where I live, and she has friends on Iwaki Island, where I also live. Perhaps because it was a weekday, the place was all to myself. 🤗 They prepared a bath and meal just for me, which was such a luxurious and appreciated experience. 😊 Afterwards, I was able to visit the Kumano Sanzan shrines in a pleasant atmosphere. Thank you so much. 🤗
An specialized inn without meals at the secret hot springs of Ryujin Onsen, which are among the 3 most famous hot springs of Japan.

It was a very Japanese experience. The owner and staff were very nice and provided excellent service!
This is a “container house” inn that offers a unique and special experience in Chikaruro, an inn town on the Kumano Kodo Route. You can enjoy meals, bonfires, and all-inclusive Wakayama specialty drinks. Meals are as follows. (tentative) Please note that the meal menu is subject to change without notice. Breakfast: Bread and coffee set Dinner: Ghibier shabu-shabu (November to March) / BBQ set (April to October) Please inform us of your request for allergy and boxed lunch plans upon reservation from the official website.

Great location, very close to Kumano Kodo trail. The constrainer is very clean with modern room and furniture, kitchen with everything you will need to stay comfortably. They even provided a washer/dryer combo in the bathroom. I only wish there is an option to have dinner in the near by restaurants, instead of cooking. Since we were tired after all day hiking. It’s great to have the option to fix your own breakfast and get an early start for the hike.

Outstanding
GGuest UserMy husband and I stayed here after a very long and wet day of hiking on the Kumano Kodo. It was a perfect place to land, rest and recover. The room is small, but the bed was one of the most comfortable of our whole trip. Our bodies also very much appreciated the onsen tubs, which both of us had to ourselves (separate men and women’s). The meal was definitely one of the very vest that we had during our entire trip in Japan, and the hostess even did emergency laundry so that we would have some dry clothes for the next day. We are very grateful to both of them for such an exceptional stay.
GGuest UserThis hotel is conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from Tanabe JR Station. It's a traditional Japanese budget hotel, small but well-equipped, and very clean. The Japanese-style breakfast buffet in the morning is also quite extensive. For dinner, you can head to the nearby Komyoji area, which is small but excellent, with many family-run eateries. I chose a tempura restaurant where they prepared the food right in front of me – it was delicious! This is the starting point for the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route, so it attracts a lot of hikers from both Japan and abroad. Many people choose to stay here.
GGuest UserThe room was very clean and the front desk staff were really friendly. I asked for a room facing away from the railway tracks and they happily switched it for me. I booked this hotel for my Kumano Kodo trek. It's small but has everything you need: a bathtub, shower, desk, and carpet. I forgot to take photos, but the room was probably around 8-9 square meters. It's quite small, but the soundproofing was decent. I booked breakfast included, which was pretty simple. I arrived early because I had a train to catch, so I just grabbed a quick bite and headed out. It's located in the countryside, so there aren't many places to explore, and a lot of shops close early. I ended up getting dinner from a convenience store, which was conveniently located right next to the station. P.S. The electric kettle was surprisingly made of plastic!
GGuest UserReview of Hanayo Garden Hotel Shirahama, Japan
Located in Shirahama Town, Wakayama Prefecture, the hotel boasts a prime location nestled between the mountains and the sea, about an 8-10 minute walk from Shirahama Beach. The surroundings are tranquil.
Specializing in seaside hot spring experiences, the hotel offers both open-air and indoor hot spring baths, some of which face the Pacific Ocean, allowing you to soak while watching the sunset or waves. The slightly alkaline spring water is beneficial for relieving muscle aches and fatigue. The facilities are well-maintained, and basic toiletries are provided. The nighttime bathing atmosphere is breathtaking, with the sounds of the stars and waves adding to the soothing effect.
The guest rooms are available in Japanese, Western, and mixed Japanese/Western styles. Spacious (25-40 square meters), they feature mattresses with a perfect firmness, making them ideal for families or groups. Bathrooms have separate wet and dry areas, bathtubs, and toilets. High-floor ocean view rooms are recommended for unobstructed views.
Hanayo Garden Hotel is a secluded retreat in Shirahama Onsen, renowned for its ocean view hot springs, fresh seafood, and family-friendly amenities. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a slow-paced holiday of ”soaking in hot springs, watching the sea, and eating seafood”, this place is worth including in your list.
GGuest UserThis hotel served as a perfect stopover while hiking the Kumano Kodo. It's less than a 10-minute taxi ride from Kumano Hongu Taisha. This was my second stay, and when I asked, the hotel mentioned a renovation in November 2025, but it sounds like it will only be a partial refurbishment! The hot springs are very comfortable, with both indoor and outdoor baths. The outdoor bath is mixed-gender, and they provide special robes you can wear out there. I booked the half-board option (dinner and breakfast), but the food was quite ordinary with limited choices. However, since there are no convenience stores nearby, eating at the hotel was the only option. The hot spring river, just a 5-minute walk away, now has a public hot spring pool. Many people were enjoying it early in the morning, and kids were also digging their own small pools in the river. Waking up to the steam rising from the river was just wonderful.
YYongrenzhaowulingwangThe shuttle bus from Ikidanabe JR Station was at around 2pm. If you missed it, you can only take a taxi there, which costs about 1700JP.
The beach behind the hotel is very beautiful, and you can see the sunset.
I booked a one-night stay with two meals. The dinner was pretty good, and the quality was higher than that of several hotels behind the Kumano Kodo!
There was also dandan noodles for supper in the evening. Personally, I feel that except for the inconvenient transportation, I am satisfied with the hotel in other aspects!
The shuttle bus was delivered to Ikidanabe Station at 10am in the morning. We felt it was a bit late, so we asked the front desk to call a taxi to the station.
Other areas are good!
GGuest UserA bit minimalistic (shared bathroom and restroom) but otherwise very friendly, clean, with standard set of amenities (TV, WiFi, refrigerator) for this type of hotels. If you are doing hiking and have to stay for a night, this place has almost unbeatable price. Highly recommend.
__SamW_Stayed for two consecutive days. The hotel staff was very friendly and could communicate in English. No matter what the problem was, they were very enthusiastic and tried their best to help you solve it.
1. There is a free shuttle bus to Hoshinmon Prince Shrine and Hongu Taisha Shrine every day. In addition, the front desk can arrange a free shuttle bus from the hotel to the bus station.
2. You can ask the front desk to arrange for your large luggage to be sent to the next hotel (hotels that are too far away may need to pay a small fee, but hotels that are very close are free)
3. You can ask the front desk to prepare a lunch box
4. The family's private bath is very clean and comfortable. When no one is around, you can request a private bath.
The dinner food was delicious! A highly recommended hotel!
GGuest UserThe hot springs are a bit dated and didn't seem very clean.
The toilets were across from our second-floor room, and as soon as we got there, we could smell a strong urine odor. The cleanliness needs to be improved.
I came here specifically for the food, which was absolutely delicious. It was definitely worth it. I give it a 120. They put a lot of thought into the preparation, and the portions were generous. It was like a truly luxurious set menu! The service was also very good.
I just hope the cleanliness could be improved...
OOlalla MI loved my stay, and was surprised by this property only being rated with a 7 because for such a low price in that area is amazing. According to what I've read, there's some things that have changed in comparison to previous years such as automated check-in/check-out (be aware that if you have any issue during check-in immediately the hotel stuff will call you to the phone on the desk behind you... it took me a while to realize that the call was for me :D ), there's an onsen now at the property at the 3rd floor, and there's no food service anymore.
Laundry is free (both waschmachine and dryer).
I was positively surprised!
